With your iPod connected to iTunes go to File, Preferences, iPod and select manual update.
If you iPod is set to automatically update and you have deleted songs from your iTunes library they will be deleted from your iPod.
Even with manual update if the song is gone from your libray and something happens to your iPod you will not be able to recover unless you import from CD again.
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
iPodRip Software
PodUtil Software
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=394618&messageID=1263275

  • Using iTunes Manually in Windows XP

I am doing things manually. I added a folder to my library (actually, there is no folder - it just creates a list of the songs in the folder from my computer without visibly grouping them the way I want). It lists the songs but they are not grouped to get them separate from other groupings (folders) in my library. I then created a play list and dragged them over. So far so good. Now I want to do this again for a differnt grouping/folder. If I import a new folder, it merges all of the new songs with the previous songs in the libarary - so they are not separated or grouped like they were on my computer. So how am I supoose to create a new play list that keeps the new songs separate from the previous ones since they are now scrambled together in a huge list? I thought maybe I could delete the songs in my library each time I create a play list, but iTunes says I lose the playlist if I delete the songs in the library. I must be doing something wrong or this is a dumb way to organize anything.

There are 2 solutions to your problem:
    1. Go to "recently added" play list, it's one of the smart play lists that are default in iTunes. Select the songs you've just added (the most recent ones should be those you want grouped together), and drag them to a new playlist (or click "File->Create a Playlist from selection").
    2. Create the new playlist first and then drag-and-drop the files/directories you want from windows explorer directly to the new playlist in iTunes (you will see a rounded highlight surrounding the playlist name).
I was looking through the forums for a solution to another problem and came by your post. Unfortunately what really is difficult to do is add files (to library or to the iPod for instance, as in manual sync) without creating duplicates(!).. I wish there was a way to scan the library/ipod for existing song and then choose to overwrite or skip... if you know of a way please respond soon

  • Using iTunes 11 how do i delete songs from my "manually managed" iPad.

Using iTunes 11 how do i delete songs from my "manually managed" iPad. (iPad gen 1)
On the old itunes i could simply highlight the songs on my music folder under my iPad connected and remove the ones i no longer wanted. With iTunes 11 when im looking through what is on my iPad i want to delete some songs or movies and it doesnt work. I can do it on the iPad itself. But theres hundreds i want to delete and this would take hours. Has anybody else had this problem?

With iTunes 11, if you haven't already done so then you should be able to enable the left-hand sidebar option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC, and the way that you delete songs should then be the same as how you used to do it e.g. select the Music section under the iPad 'device' on that left-hand sidebar and select and delete the songs that you don't want on the iPad anymore on the right-hand side of iTunes

  • Is it possible to create an EQ setting (manual) in iTunes that can be stored on an iPod nano as an addition to the 22 EQ onpresets?  I want to use a manual setting for my headphones without applying the setting to each song.

Hi.  Is it possible to create an EQ setting (manual) in iTunes that can be stored on an ipod nano as an addition to the 22 EQ presets?  I want to use a manual setting for my headphones without applying the EQ to all the individual songs.  I'd use a different EQ for my dock.
    Thanks.

  • How do I manually drag and drop songs from music library to iPhone 4 using iTunes 11?

How do I manually drag and drop songs from music library to iPhone using iTunes 11?

If you manually manage music... on iTunes 11, go to the top left corner and there will be a pull down bar. Click "show menu bar". From there, go to view, then show sidebar. Magically, it looks like the previous versions of iTunes. Took me 3 hours of trial and error and searching through forums to figure out. Tried calling Apple to have them walk me through it and they said they wouldn't help me since I don't have Apple Care. Whatever. Hope this helps!!

In iTunes 10, it's simple to just drag and drop a few songs manually from the library/playlist to the Shuffle.  In iTunes 11, Shuffle has its own window.  How do you manually drag and drop songs from music library/playlist to iPod Shuffle using iTunes 11?

Hi all, I can't manually backup my iPhone 5 using iTunes to my Windows PC & this iTunes error message appears: "iTunes could not backup the iPhone because a session could not be started with the iPhone".
May I know how to solve it in order to backup my iPhone like previous? Thank you!!

I tried disable already, but still can't backup. Actually this also happens to my iPad. But my iPhone 4S can be backed up using the same PC. Anyother solution? Thanks

  • HT1202 Can I still sync music manually using itunes 11.0.1?

Can I still sync music manually using itunes 11.0.1? The copy and paste AND drag and drop methods don't seem to work any more. Why does Apple make itunes so hard to use?

Thanks, but no dice. When I check Maunal manage, I get the dialog about erasing the phone and syncing to this computer. The only thing I can think of is to make sure my home machine is also set to manual sync. Although, I was able to manual sync just fine until I upgraded itunes to 11.0.1

  • Manually Changing song dynamics when in the cloud using iTunes Match

I would like to know if I am capable of changing the volume or adding an equalizer setting to a song that was uploaded to the cloud and is matched using iTunes Match?  This song/album was initially ripped from a CD.

    Hi,
What you will get is the Matched version. Any volume adjustment or equalisation setting will not apply. If track had been uploaded instead of matched, the track would be identical to the original.
If you downloaded the matched track to replace the original on your computer, you would have to redo the adjustments.

  • How can 2 people use itunes in the same household? we both have iphone 4 and separate id but the same itunes? pleasehelp

how can two people use itunes in the same household? i had a iphone before so alreday had an itunes account now me and my husband have upgraded and we now both have them. he has set up a username and i have mine yet when he logs in he seems to just get my account? please help

Decide which iPhone will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else save these to your camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.  If you are syncing Notes with iCloud, you'll also have to email your notes to yourself so they can be recreated in the new account as they cannot be migrated.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPhone.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to un-merge the data you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa).

  • Can I use iTunes Match for 2 iPhones with different music, same account?

My wife and I each have an iPhone and share an iTunes account.  We share a master music library but each manually manage our music on our iPhones.  So she has certain songs on her phone and I have different ones on mine, both coming from the same master library.  I'm trying to figure out if I can use iTunes Match in this scenario.  I don't want to see her songs on my iPhone.  Is there a way to only see music on my iPhone if I use Match or am I stuck seeing my entire library on my iPhone?

I think I'm getting it finally, thanks for the clarification.  So at least I know there is a way to not see all music in my library from my iPhone.
So in my case i have about 800 songs on my iPhone out of about 1600 on my iTunes library.  If I'm understanding correctly I would have to enable Match on my iPhone, then turn off the "show all music" option.  This in turn should leave me with my original 800 songs listed which I woud then have to download from the cloud.  Once I have all of my 800 songs back down from the cloud I won't be required to download them again from that phone.
A worse scenario would be that I enable Match, and then have to find my 800 songs out of the total 1600 manually from the list and then download them from the cloud.
    Which scenario is correct?

  • Using iTunes *just* to transfer music to the iPod?

    More iTunes frustrations...
As my original hard disk is nearly full, I've installed a second hard drive (let's call it G:); this is where I intend to keep my music files for use by my Squeezebox.
Before installing iTunes, I copied the contents of My Music to G:\My Music. The idea was to let iTunes loose on the original set, doing whatever it has to; then transfer the results to the iPod; then delete the original set and (somehow!) persuade iTunes to leave them on the iPod. After this, I would put files onto the iPod by transcoding FLAC files in G: to mp3 files somewhere else, then dragging them onto the iPod; then deleting them from the hard disk. (I'm not bothered about having anything in sync with the iPod.)
This is now beginning to look like a forlorn dream .
First problem: when I installed iTunes, I am pretty **** sure I told it only to look in My Documents\My Music; yet it seems to be full of references to files on G:. Curiously, only a selective set, not even all tracks from some albums; it's as if it populated itself by reading playlists rather than folders. (Yet I've checked: none of my playlists under My Documents refers to G:) So why on earth did it add files from G: to its library?
Second problem: I told iTunes not to convert my WMA files during setup. This would create AAC copies in my iTunes folder, and my disc is nearly full. But iTunes still added the WMA files to its library; and now whenever I sync with the iPod, iTunes hangs for about 10 minutes while it works out that it can't transfer all these WMA files. Is there an easy way to delete them from iTunes? I do NOT want to have to go through track-by-track, as there are several thousand of them.
Third problem: for use with the Squeezebox, I've added artwork to each album as a JPEG file in the album folder. For the many albums I have that are not found in the iStore, all I seem to be able to do is to select all the tracks of each album, do Get Info, then drag the JPEG into the Artwork box. Again, this isn't something I want to have to do for several hundred albums. Is there really no way to tell iTunes to get the artwork for each album from a file in the album folder?
Fourth problem: I thought that I could select a large number of tracks and do "Get Artwork" from the iStore, so at least some of the above tedium could be avoided. But if I select more than a screenful or two of tracks (in the with-artwork view), then Get Artwork just hangs after 5 albums or so. I can still use iTunes for other things, but now Get Artwork won't work until I quit iTunes and restart.
Fifth problem: trying to switch the iPod to "manually managed" has resulted in its entire contents being replaced with one album when I dragged-and-dropped it onto the iPod icon. (See my earlier post on this.)
Sixth problem: if - as it looks - iTunes did populate itself by reading my .m3u playlists, why didn't it recreate the playlists themselves? I've built up a large number of playlists for use with both the Squeezebox and our Zens, so it'll be a pain to have to recreate those by hand in iTunes. Can it really not do this?
I'm seriously considering uninstalling iTunes, wiping its library, then doing whatever it takes to make sure that it only finds music when I want it to! But I thought I was already doing that; and I don't plan to go through very many wipe-and-restart iterations!
Yes, this looks like a bit of a moaning list; but I need to decide fairly quickly whether I'm going to return my iPod because it doesn't fit in with how I want to organise and use my music. (I also need to test the iPod itself to see if it fits my requirements as a player; there are some surprising shortcomings compared to my old Zen Touch, but it's possible I just haven't learned the interface yet.)
Perhaps I should consider trying something other than iTunes, such as Anapod; might it be a better match for my requirements? (My wife and I already use Notmad for our Zens, and think it's far better than Creative's own tools.)

OK, answering one of my own questions: I realised that I can add a "Kind" column to the tracks view, then order on that. This puts all the WMA tracks together, so I can select them all and then hit Delete.
If only the remainder didn't look so few.
I've yet to see what will happen when I sync my iPod...

  • I have been using itunes on my windows based pc for years but since installing the latest itunes update I have been getting the error message A required itunes component is not installed. Please reinstall itunes. (-42404)

I have been using itunes on my windows 64 bit laptop for years but since downloading the latest itunes 10.7 update whenever I opened itunes the error message 'A required itunes component is not installed. Please reinstall itunes (-42404)'
Itunes would still load and play music in my library and I could still sync my ipod but when loading a CD itunes would not recognise the album/tracks and I would need to type them manualing after uploading.
I have just bought the new iphone5 and went to sync the phone with itunes. itunes recognises the iphone when plugged in via the usb port or when wi fi is turned on but itunes will not allow the phone to sync.
I spent over an hour the other morning speaking to apple customer support and have ensured I have administer right and that UAC is turned off.
I was taken through msconfigure and adjusted the startup tab but still no joy.
In the end I was e-mailed instructions on how to uninstall and then reinstall itunes and component parts.
Now that I've uninstalled itunes when I try reinstalling I get the following messages during the download.
    The 1st message is;
'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application  Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
    When I click ok the next message that appears sometime later during the install is;
Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) Failed to start Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
The options I have are to abort, retry or ignore. If I retry the same message comes back and if I  abort or ignore the download continues and I then get the following message:
'Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run itunes Helper. Please uninstall itunes, then reinstall itunes again. Error 2'
After attempting to reinstall itunes only some components were installed however itunes would not open.
It would appear many people have experienced problems with this latest download!

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
