Using itunes with two computers

I use two computers, one in my lounge and one in my bedroom. Both the itunes version are 5.01 and work well. However I am unable to add songs easily to both itunes libaries at the same time. How can I keep both libaries up to date? For example I buy tunes from itunes in my bedroom and then have to add them indivually with the computer in the lounge? Windows Media can see new tunes apear is there a way itunes can do the same?
Thanks , any help would be greatly appreciated

hi Anthony!
as far as i'm aware (but i'm not up-to-date on research on this topic at the moment), there isn't an automatic way of keeping the two libraries aligned. this document might be useful:

anyone with more up-to-date or additional resources on this topic, please feel free to leap in.

  • Using PalmVx with two computers

I have been using a PalmVx with my Desktop computer (WIN XP Prof) and also with my laptop (WIN XP Prof). I recently formatted the HDD of my laptop and have re-installed my palmOne software ver 4.1.4 on my laptop. While installing the palmOne software in my laptop when asked for <User Name> I gave the same Username as in my desktop computer. So now my laptop indicates the identical Username as my desktop computer.
My desktop computer is connected to the palm cradle using a serial connection while my laptop is connected through a Serial-to-USB adaptor to a USB port on my laptop.
I need to have all my data in my PalmVx transferred to my laptop, so I set all the conduits in my laptop to "Handheld overwrites Desktop" and carried out a Hotsync.
The Hotsync dialog that comes up on the laptop shows a UserName <blank> instead of the Username that I set (similar to the desktop).
Please advise how I can get all my data currently on my desktop and in my handheld into my laptop?
    TIA

Actually, there are several articles on the web about the fact that you CAN
synch the itunes with two computers. Music, Video, and Ringtones can be done from one computer, and Mail, Contacts, etc. can be done from a second computer.
Just do a Yahoo search on "synching iPhone with two computers."
If you are trying to do music from two computers, you are right, that will not work. There is a program, which I think the Yahoo search above will also uncover that allows you to do a "swap," where you can have the songs from one computer show up on the iPhone, and when you swap, the songs from the other computer show up. I am not sure if this utility survived the upgrage to version 2.0 of the softweare.

  • Using iPhone with two computers

    Home PC - MacBook Pro
    Work PC - Windows
    both running iTunes 7.7
My music is on my home Mac and I manually create playlists, add music etc.
With my 3G Nano, I can connect and listen to songs on my iPod from my work PC. I can't seem to do this with my iPhone - my PC sees the iPhone but all of the music is greyed out and cannot be selected.
Is it a limitation of the iPhone that I cannot use it with two computers in this way, or is it a configuration issue?
I would prefer not to have to buy a set of external speakers just to use my iPhone to play music at work.
    thanks

  • Using itunes with two users

How can my wife and I use iTunes on one pc with two separate i-devices? And how can she move her library to another computer?
    Regards
    Mike

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Using itunes on two computers??

i have most of my music on one computer thats not a lap top and i had some of my music on my other computer... well i opened itunes tonight and evidently it was all lost so is there a way to connect the two computers together through itunes or something rather then sending music by email because that takes a long time.

is there a way to connect the two computers together
You mean like say a computer network? Yes but this is not really the appropriate forum to get help with that. If you do not have a hub/router and need to plug the two into each other you will need a cross over network cable. Once they are connected there is any number of ways to move the files. Setting up file sharing is probably the easiest.
You could also just burn the songs to DVD, if they will fit and move them that way.

  • Using itunes on two computers -- my Desktop and my Laptop

I would like to be able to copy the content of my iTunes Library to my Laptop and then be able to play music while away from my Desktop. Exporting / Importing doesn't seem to do this -- all I get is a small XML file.
I must be doing something wrong.
    Suggestions?
    Steve

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it and the original one and copy over your iTunes folder. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders.
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
On the PC you'll find the iTunes folder in: \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ copy the iTunes folder to the same location on the second computer. When you open iTunes on the second computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. When I moved iTunes a while ago for my daughter I was also using the same version of iTunes, not sure how important that is but it's probably worth keeping them the same.

  • Using iTunes with two iPhones between two computers

I have an iPhone 4 that I use primarily on my Windows laptop and my wife has an iPhone 3G that she uses with our iMac. We have both of these devices set to Manually manage music and videos. If I connect my iPhone 4 to the iMac the checkbox to Manually manage music and videos is unchecked. If I check the box and click on Apply, it tells my that my iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes Library?" How can I connect my iOS devices to any computer without running into this problem.

Iphone will sync/manually mange music with one and only one computer.
If you sync/manage to another, it will erase the content from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer.
This is by design and intentional.

  • Using itunes on two computers and ...

    Hi there
i got my mum an ipod for her birthday, i also got her a itunes voucher as well so she could buy some songs
but because she didnt want to put her bank detail in to set up an account, (it wouldn't let her use the voucher with out setting up an account)
she used my account, but on her computer, it now wont let her tranfer the songs to her ipod or burn them onto cd.
i just log onto my account from my laptop
    and it says
3 machines are authorized to play music purchased with this account, so i though that it would work,
it there anyway i can get this songs to work, and tranfer the songs to her ipod?
    many thanks for the help!

it wouldn't let her use the voucher with out setting up an account
You set up an account using the voucher.
Go to the main iTunes store screen.
Select Redeem at the top right under *Quick Links*.
Input the card number, then select *Create new account*.
When it gets to the Credit card info, select None.
If you select *Create new account* and not Redeem, you are required to input a CC number.
You should be able to transfer the songs from your iTunes to her iPod. If they do not transfer, play one of the purcahses in iTunes first.
Then authorize her computer using your account (whatever was used to purcahse the songs).
She plugs in the iPod and she can transfer the purchases from the iPod to her computer.

  • Using Shuffle with two computers

Is there a way to have songs on my shuffle from two different computers? When I plug into a new computer, it asks me if I want to relpace the songs on my ipod. I don't I just want to add a few songs from another computer. Is there a way to do this?

No there isn't not to listen the songs on the shuffle.
Now you can use it as a disk drive on two computers

  • Using iTunes with Two Libraries Simultaneously.

In the living room I have a Mac Mini with a large external drive running iTunes that I use as a media server. I recently got a new TV for the bedroom and have hooked my MacBook up to it. My laptop has the iTunes library that is synced with my iPod and keeps all my music files organized.
Is it possible for the iTunes on my Laptop to share the library of the iTunes on my Mac Mini?

Technically movie sharing does work as well, but it has terrible performance when trying to go through itunes. However if you turn on music sharing so that the itunes library shows up under sharing on the second computer, front row seems to work ok depending on how you have the movies compressed. Launch front row, go into sources at the bottom of the list, and select the library of the other computer. Give it a bit to load and you should be able to play the movies from the other computer there now.

  • Using iTunes on two computers from external drive

I have my itunes on an external drive and would like to use it on both my laptop and my home PC (both are Windows XP). My laptop is what I have used consistently in the past without issue, but am having trouble opening it on my PC. Thoughts?

That might be a problem coz the library saves the full path of the files, so unless the drive is seen on the 2 computers by the same drive letter, that might not be possible UNLESS u have 2 libraries for each windows.
U could share the library on ur network at home, just enable library sharing in ur prefrences, connect it to one & play it on both at the same time
    I hope that helps

  • Using TM with two computers

Hi, I want to use TM for my imac and macbook. I was told that it automatically makes a file for both if they are named differently. My imac back ups are fine. But my macbook backups, strangely, only back up the desktop files.
    1. How do I get TM to back up all files on my macbook like my imac
    2. How do I get rid of the many back ups it has already made of the desktop files WITHOUT losing my imac back ups.
    Thanks everyone.

As Jeremy says, your log messages might help. Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. If you see something there that seems suspicious, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
    2. How do I get rid of the many back ups it has already made of the desktop files WITHOUT losing my imac back ups.
You can delete backups via the TM interface (do NOT use the Finder).
Enter Time Machine and navigate to one of the small Finder windows (not the NOW window).
Select your MacBook in the sidebar, then click the "gear" icon, then select the +Delete all backups of xx+ option.
That will delete all the backups of your MacBook.

  • I am using Windows 8 with iTunes.  How do I manage iTunes with two different Windows User Accounts?

I have recently bought a laptop running Windows 8 and downloaded iTunes.  I subscribe to iTunes Match and have a large amount of purchased music and imported CDs, along with some films purchased from iTunes.
I have downloaded all of the music and the films to the laptop using iTunes Match when logged in under my User Account in Windows 8.  However, when we switch to my girlfriend's User Account, she can load up iTunes but all the music and films have the cloud symbol on them indicating that they need to be downloaded
Is is necessary to download everything to the computer twice (I can't really believe this is the answer) or are we missing something in terms of using iTunes with two different User Accounts?
    Thank you.

    Step 1
Create a new user account on your device. For Mac users, choose “System Preferences” from the Apple Menu and navigate to the “View” menu. Click on “Accounts” and select the “+” button to add a new user account to your machine. Edit the user information and grant any relevant privileges by following the on-screen prompts.
For Windows users, click on the Windows "Start" button, select “Control Panel” and choose “Add or Remove User Accounts.” A new window will open. Click “Create a New Account.” Name the account and set any relevant privileges by following the on-screen prompts.
    Step 2
Sign in to the new user account you created.
    Step 3
Open iTunes and click “Sign in.” Enter your Apple ID and password and log in.
    Step 4
Download purchases through the iTunes store. All files related to these purchases are stored under the separate user account, thus separating both iTunes accounts and their libraries on the same computer.
    Step 5
You can share music from both libraries by dragging your music library to a publicly accessible location on your computer. Click “Preferences” from the iTunes menu and deselect “Copy files to iTunes Media Library when adding to library file.” Add the shared folder to your library from the “File” menu.
    Tip
Create more than one library from the same user account by deselecting “Copy files to iTunes Media Library when adding to library file” from the “Preferences” menu. Add the files you want to iTunes by dragging and dropping or by opening from the “File” menu and sync your device to that library. Quit iTunes after the sync and reopen iTunes while holding the "Shift" key in Windows or the "Option" key on a Mac.

  • How to use iPhone with multiple computers on iTunes 11?

Both of my computers are Windows 7. I try to manage my music and videos on both iTunes. I used to be easy, like you just check the "Manually manage music and videos" square, and everything is fine... But after I update to iTunes 11, it just doesn't work. There is no resulting dialog box coming up where I can click "OK" after I checked square, and no matter I click "apply" below or "done" above, the iTunes asks to erase and sync with the iPhone. After it syncs, the "Manually manage music and videos" is checked. But if I move to another computer another iTunes, then it says I'm already syncing with one iTunes, and it needs to erase and sync with my iPhone again... and of course, the "Manually manage music and videos" is unchecked on this iTunes... If I try to check that on this one.. it's the same story happened before... Basically, there is just no way I can use one iPhone on two iTunes 11, is it?

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.

  • I got a new computer and now iTunes is telling me it can't sync with two computers

I got a new computer and now iTunes is telling me it can't sync with two computers, it's telling me it will erase what's on my iPad and re-sync. Will I lose my iPad data that's on it?

No - not at all. Look at that one app that I gave you the link for. That is supposed to transfer all of the iPad content to the new computer. I have no idea how much it costs, but it's worth a look. There are other out there as well. Google "apps to transfer iPad content to computer" or something to that effect. These apps claim to transfer everything.
Several things to remember - you can still transfer all of the iTunesicon tent that you purchased by using the Transfer Purchases option in iTunes. Just remember to turn off auto syncing before you do it. You will also have to authorize your new computer to transfer the purchase if you haven't done so already. From the iTunes menu on your computer go to Store> Authorize this computer.
Plus any apps or music that you have bought can be downloaded again at no charge with the cloud feature in the latest iPad iOS.
EDIT - I see that you did transfer the purchases. Look at one of those apps that I described and they should be able to get you set up. You should also invest in an external hardrive for backing up all of your computer content ... don't want this to happen again!
