Using iWeb files in dreamweaver

Here's the deal. I built my website in iWeb, no problem. I upgraded my hard drive and backed up the files I uploaded (not using .mac) and now I can't just edit my site. iWeb won't open what it created and dreamweaver just opens up blank pages. What do I do?
Working on a site from another machine also
requires that the Domain file
I assume that is referring to working on another
[mac] machine.
Yes, it has to be another Mac with iWeb installed.
It just seems wierd to me
that someone can browse my site on-line..but i can't
open it up. Why does it work that way?
Your site on-line is just standard html and can be opened and edited with any text editor. iWeb's inability to open html is presumably related to the programming technology it uses to generate html from its internal templates -- just the way this particular app works.

• Open iweb files in dreamweaver

Hi! I have read so many forums about this topic. The solution everyone seems to have is to publish your iweb files to a folder and then open index.html through dreamweaver. I can open the file, however, it only displays a code and the file size is only 4kb. I know that my site is way larger than that, so I'm thinking i'm opening it incorrectly or something. So if anyone knows and could give me fool proof step by step "for dummies" directions, that would be awesome!!

iWeb's index.html files don't have any content. Open the other .html files which you find in the sitename folder.

• Using FH9 files in dreamweaver

I have an .fh9 file that i want to insert in dreamweaver. I
need to know if .fh9 files are the correct format to use for web
pages or should a different format be used.

You might want to check out soe basic web authoring tutorials
at someplace like webmonkey.com...or start with the basic tutorials
in DW.
But to answer your question, no, you don't want to use FH9
files in DW. Most web browsers can only display GIF and JPG images,
but you could output your FH9 file as something more usable. OR you
could like to the FH9 file for people to download.
Hope this helps!

• Using PHP files in Dreamweaver?

When I create a new PHP file in Dreamweaver the code is the same as an HTML file, shouldn't be different? with php commands or something?
Thanks

When I create a new PHP file in Dreamweaver the code is the same as an HTML file, shouldn't be different? with php commands or something?
Not unless you add them.  PHP is a server-side programming language.  PHP web pages are no different than HTML pages except that they can parse data on the server.  With the right include statements or commands, PHP or ASP pages can publish information from server-side databases to form a dynamically driven web site.

• Using InDesign Files with Dreamweaver

For several years my designers have produced layered
Photoshop files which I then import into ImageReady. In ImageReady
I produce the slices, background images, etc.
I have a new designer which likes to use InDesign for Website
Design. I am looking for help from the community regarding the use
of InDesign files as raw material for website development. Do I
need to get InDesign or can I import the file into ImageReady?
Your help is appreciated.

That's nice for him; but what about YOU?
If your workflow does not include InDesign, then his
shouldn't for your
jobs; he's working for you, after all. And I've never comes
across a web
designer using InDesign for web work (print work, yes - all
the time. It's
good for that...). I usually work in Fireworks, but I have
one client who
likes to work from Photoshop to match with their in-house
designers. For
that client, I use Photoshop.
So... Just tell him the formats you support, and leave him to
sort out how
he gets them for you. If you need the source documents as
well, then dictate
them also.

• Using FLV files in iWeb

Looking for help!
I'm creating sites and using iWeb enhancer to embed swf. files into my site. I've had no trouble getting basic animations and a xml based player working. Check swampfoot.co.uk then go to media to see.
What I'm struggling with is to get a flah video player to play a flv. file from a ulr. I can get the player to embed but it won't play the movie. Has anyone got any code I could adapt to get this to work?
Any help would be greatly recieved.

My solution may not be the most technical but it works. We use a combination of iWeb, dreamweaver and straight code on our site. We lay a graphic in where the flash is going to go then we replace the code with the flash player. You have to make sure the flash is in a div and is identified as a object.

There are 6 pages of images and text, and it

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

• I built a website, using iWeb.  I backed up daily with Time Machine and OS 10.6.  My HD crashed.  I replaced the HD and installed 10.5. But now I can't restore iWeb and my domain file. How do I restore my site files on the new drive?

I obviously dont know how to use this forum...my question to the community seems to be the truncated phrase in the title block above..you can scroll thru it to see my whole question....basiclly,.my question is:  How do I restore my iWeb domain files which are kept in  user>library>applicationssupport>iWeb>domain in my Time Machine date listings...to a newly installed disc.  I had a disk crash, removed the failed drive and installed another. I then installed OS 10.5 (I didn't have a copy of my 10.6). Now I'm having difficulty figuring out how to get the iWeb files from the Time Machine external drive used with the 10.6 to the new drive running 10.5...any help muich appreciated....!!

Go to to your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder in the Finder and then enter  Time Machine.  Go back to the last backup that has the domain file, select it and use the Restore button.

• How to publish to an FTB server in iWeb 2 using the File ➙ Publish to Folder option??

I was just given the following advice regarding publishing to an FTP other than MobileMe.
Web 08 does not have that feature (drop down menu to publish from "site" icon).  You will need to upgrade to iWeb 3 in iLife 11 in order to get that feature.  You can get iLife 11 at the online Apple Store while supplies last since iWeb (and iDVD) have been discontinued by Apple
To pubish to an FTB server in iWeb 2 use the File ➙ Publish to Folder menu option and then use a 3rd party FTP client like Cyberduck to upload the site files.
Follon-on question, can anyone provide more details on how to do exactly what was suggested?  I toyed with it and can only get it to publish to a folder on my desktop, but not to an external FTP.  (I have already purchased a web-host package, just need to publish to it!)

Okay.  When you publish your site from iWeb to a local folder what you will get is one site folder - this site folder will have the same name as you gave your site in iWeb and one separate index.html file.
Your site folder contains an index.html file as well as the separate index.html file.  You NEED both.
What you need to do is firstly using Cyberduck or whatever, upload your site folder to your host into whatever folder you need to upload to on the server - could be 'public_html', 'htdocs' or whatever - this is your root folder.
You then need to upload your separate index.html file to your server too, but this index file needs to sit outside your site folder because it needs to point in towards the index.html file that is in your site folder - this is the first page of your site.
You don't delete or duplicate any index files - iWeb produces the two index files that you need when you publish to a local folder - one index file in the site folder itself and one separate index file that sits outside the site folder and points into the first page of your site.
Also, remember to call the first page of your site something like Home or Welcome, but DO NOT name it index.
By the looks of things here you have not uploaded your index files correctly.
What I would suggest that you do is start over - so open Cyberduck and connect to your server and go and delete your site folder and your other index file if it is still there.
Go back to iWeb and publish to a local folder again and notice that you have both your site folder and separate index.html file.
Now go and open Cyberduck again and connect to your server and note where you need to upload your files to.
Now go and upload your Site Folder to your server and once this has finished go back and upload your separate index.html file, but this needs to sit outside your site folder.  If you do this, then your site should display okay - as long as your other index file is pointing into to the first page of your site it should display correctly.

• PLEASE HELP!! I've used iWeb to create multiple sites, all published to third party servers.  The very last site I made changes to is showing up in any domain file I open - despite their different names and locations on my iMac.  I just switched to Lion.

Please HELP!!  I just switched to Lion.  I have created multiple websites using iWeb  3.0.4 and despite my having saved their 'domain' files in various locations and using different filenames, upon opening the domain files I keep getting the very last site I published.  All the sites were published to third party servers.  The domain files (still have a preview that look correct and have different file sizes) but keep going back to the last site published. HELP ME PLEASE!! Are the old files still available?!!

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

• How can I use iWeb to create website that contains a lot of downloadable audio files?

Hi
How to use iWeb to create a website that contains a downloadable audio files.  I'm uloading about 15 GB of audio files.  I need to creat folders "albums" and then put the files in these folders.   Any advise?
Thank you very much for your time to this
W B

The important thing is not to put the audio files directly into iWeb: if you do that then every time iWeb decides it needs to upload the entire site you will find yourself uploading all 15GB of audio files, which won't make you happy. Start by uploading the files to the server - in folders as suits you - and then link to them in iWeb.
If you want them to download rather than play, you may be able to set up an .'htaccess' file in the folder which will force a download - it depends on whether your hosting service will allow this. The method is described here:
http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/missing/download.html
Here is an example of a simple link which produces a download (without the process described the audio file would play in the browser in a blank page):
http://rfwilmut.net/stars/dawson2.mp3
Then all you need to do is to provide a link, designed however suits you, in your iWeb page. If your server won't allow the .htaccess file then you will have to ask visitors to control-click (Mac) or right-click (Windows) on the link and choose 'Download linked file' or equivalent - not so convenient; or otherwise zip the files first, which won't much reduce their size but will force a download (and of course the recipients will have to unzip them).
If you want the files to play in a player in the page, you can use an html snippet to provide a player as described in this page (you will also need to upload a script to the webspace - this is provided in the page):

• Using HTML file from Photoshop in Dreamweaver (Was: Help.....Newbie Here)

Hi
I'm new to dreamweaver. I know a bit of photoshop and wanted create a simple  website using photoshop and dreamweaver. I created a layout and sliced out the different parts and when saved as web, it created a set of image files and a html file.
Now when I placed this html file in dreamweaver, everything got right just as I created in photoshop but when I tried to place an swf file on an image which was sliced out from the photoshop, the other images (sliced on photshop) get scrambled in dreamweaver. I tried everything but I can't understand how to place an object Even while placing text on an image file, the whole layout gets scrambled.
Any help please. I want to place a swf file and also write a heading "radio player" above the swf file on an image in dreamweaver.
Thanks

Slicing the design from Photoshop will give you 'image' output - this is very bad practice. You're only supposed to slice design elements & use CSS to put them together within a webpage.
I'd recommend you take some time out and go through this tutorial before continuing to work - http://net.tutsplus.com/articles/news/slice-and-dice-that-psd/
This will give you a quick walkthrough of how you can re-create the PSD design using CSS for building a 'proper' website.

• Should I be concerned with file sizes of my images I post using iWeb?

Should I condense and compress my images down so they won't take up as much bandwidth when I use iWeb?

I think the real answer has been covered in another thread, but I'll try to recap. iWeb 1.0 used to convert everything to .png. And as many have complained, the png that is created by iWeb (even in 1.0.1) is oftentimes larger than the original .jpg (for really small ones under 100k). Starting with 1.0.1, iWeb will leave .jpg's alone and copy them straight over if you do not add any shadows or reflections or rotations. Anytime you add these effects, iWeb will create a properly reduced .png file and leave the .jpg out of it.
So there is a little bit of a dilemma for us users. If we have really tiny .jpg's (like a bunch of 20k elements), we should want iWeb to use them directly without creating a .png. But this means avoiding applying effects. And then if we have really big .jpgs (like 3mb photos), we should want iWeb to convert them to .png without copying over the original .jpg. And it will do exactly that, provided you apply some kind of effect.
From my experience, iWeb behaves exactly as described above. The only effect that will still result in the full file being copied over (and used on the web page! A 3mb photo!) is masking. You can add a reflection or shadow box to a masked photo and iWEb will create a smaller .png, but it will still copy over the large .jpg. I scale my photos down to 640x480 for about 150k .jpg and the .pngs that iWeb creates are still 300-400k for a no effects image. This is a problem, but I try to remember to apply some effects which cuts the files down to 20k or so. Strange.
