Using iWeb to publish to a non mac account

I guess the question is in the subject.
I'm just wondering if it is possible to use iWeb to create your website, but then send it to a different domain/server?

nuorder72,
Welcome to the discussions.
Easily done. Create a new folder on your desktop, and name it for your site. From the file menu in iWeb, choose File/Publish to a folder..., and select this new folder. iWeb will deliever your site, in it's own folder, and the index.html file needed for the site. You will upload both of these as they are to your server, using an ftp client.
Some good tips and more details on this can be found in these notes by Tom Gewecke.

  • Using iWeb to publish to a non.mac domain

Can I use iweb to develop a web site and publish to a domain that is not .mac?
Or can I host a non.mac domain on .mac?

Can I use iweb to develop a web site and publish to a
    domain that is not .mac?
Yes, you can. But not directly from iWeb. You will develop your pages in iWeb but the choose the "Publish to Folder" option. This will put all the files necessary for your website in a folder on your hard drive. You will then need to use an FTP program to upload the site files to your 3rd party web host.
Or can I host a non.mac domain on .mac?
Yes, you can also do this. You can do your pages in iWeb and then "Publish to .Mac". Then you can use "Domain Forwarding" available from your registrar or some other redirecting html to forward people who type in your domain name to you .Mac iWeb URL.
Either method will work fine. You will lose out on .Mac specific features (like slideshows, counters, passwords, comments, search) if you host your pages on a 3rd party web host. Also you lose the ability to do incremental uploads (uploading only changed pages) directly from iWeb if you're not using .Mac.
Good luck to you. If this has been useful information to you, please do me a favor and click the "solved" or "helpful" buttons in the title bar of this reply. Thanks.

  • Can use iweb and publish sites without a mobileme account?

I have a old imac and it died and I lost all of my websites and Im afraid that I cant republish the websites without a mobile me account… anyone know what I can do ?

When you 'lost your websites' do you mean you lost the 'Domain' file in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder? iWeb keeps all its information there and if you do not have it you will have to recreate your site from scratch. If this is the case I would most strongly advise not using iWeb - it's not been sold or supported for some time now, and indeed v2 ('08) does not work with Mavericks: v3 may stop working on a future update. There are many other programs for making websites - Everweb is popular and is designed to be very like iWeb, with more facilities.
If you do have the Domain file then you can publish to any website hosting service as outlined by Old Toad. There is a more detailed description of the process for the two different versions here:
    http://wilmut.uk/missing2
However if you are going to use iWeb remember that as I said a future system upgrade may very well break it; and you would find it very difficult to update the site by editing the published pages in the absence of being able to use iWeb and the Domain file.

  • Publishing to a non Mac friendly server + network

I am sure this has been asked countless times - feel free to point me to the correct discussion forum-, I am having trouble publishing my Iweb site in to a non .Mac server. Any ideas?

In the past 24 hours I was able to publish my domain
to the folder with the URL I was given. The webmaster
is asking me which of the files uploaded is the one
that links to the webpage. Clearly I am missing
something when using Iweb with a non .Mac server. Any
    tips and ideas?
When you "publish to a folder" from iWeb you should get a folder on your hard drive which has the same name as your site does inside iWeb, plus an index.html file. You then use ftp to upload these two items only to your server space run by your webmaster. Is that what you did? If not, what did you do? I don't understand what you mean when you say "published my domain to the folder with the URL I was given."
Did you read the link provided earlier? Do you have questions about it?
What server are you using, and what ftp program? What is your url supposed to be?

  • Using iWeb to publish to two sites separately

Here's my situation: I purchased a Family Pack .mac so I get 5 sites. I will use one for my own use, my wife will use one, and my son will use one.
We would like to use one of the two remaining accounts primarily to put up a website for a friend of ours who is working as a missionary in Africa.
So on my wife's computer, we want to use iWeb to build two sites, publish one in one .mac account and publish the other in another .mac account.
So far iWeb keeps publishing them in the same account.
    Any ideas?

The easiest thing for you to do would be to create a separate account on your wife's computer for this additional .Mac account that you wish to publish to. You can add this System account under System Preferences>Accounts. Then log into this account and add the additional .Mac information into the System Preferences there. Launch iWeb and create your page. When you publish, it will be published using the extra .Mac account.
This way...no juggling of Domain files. No switching back and forth of .Mac account information. Just log into the separate account to edit and publish this separate website on this .Mac account. Then your wife can log back into her own account to edit her own websites. Easy.

  • Using iWeb with a hosting service besides .mac?

Hello, I have not yet upgraded to iLife 08, but am deciding whether it is worth it. My question is, is it possible to host your iWeb website on something besides a .mac account (I do not have one). Or is it necessary that you pay the $99 a year to publish your websites? Any suggestions for other sites besides .mac if it is possible? Thanks!

Just registered with a domain and hosting with hostmonster.com, a bit easier to use than Godaddy.com, great customer support, 24/7 friendly voices in Utah, haha. Ridiculous amount of bandwidth and storage space, plus features. You have to switch the CNAME prefs over the phone or submit a support ticket from your control panel (webpage where you control your account), done real quick.
Don't forget that there is also CyberDuck, which is a really good FREE FTP app. I use this more than Transmit or Fetch, although I also like Transmit a lot.

  • I created a website using iWeb, then published to MobileMe, how can i publish to iCloud?

I created a website using iWeb, then published to MobileMe, Mobile Me is now closed, how can i publish to iCloud?

iCloud does NOT allow you to host your web sites. You can continue to use iWeb but, will need a 3rd party web host to upload your websites to. Depending on the version of iWeb you are using you have a couple of publishing options:
iWeb '09 (3.0.4) you can publish to an FTP Server or a local folder. ( With the built in FTP in iWeb you will end up with an address like "www.YourDomain.com/sitename/Home.html )
iWeb '08 you can publish your website to a local folder
I have been using IX Webhosting for several years with little to no problems "usually the problem was something I did" and they have been quick to solve any issue I have come across. The have plans that start at $3.95 a mo (USD) and their customer service is top notch.

  • Podcasts don't play m4a files on a non .mac account.

So here is the deal I created a podcast site using iweb. Saved to a folder and uploaded it to www.damntourist.com/testcast
I didn't change anything. Just created it and ftp'd to the web.
If you click on the sample podcast, it doesn't load. Seems that mp4 and m4a files do not work on non .mac accounts.
You can also check out www.damntourist.com/audio/rss.xml
This is for another test that I did. Here you will see that the m4a or mp4 files can not be downloaded but the mp3 files can. All of these files are in the same folder.
The files do play just fine from my hard drive in itunes, on my ipod and through quicktime.
Does anyone know why m4a and mp4 files can be played and downloaded from a .mac account but not another server.
I don't mind doing things a little differently. I also don't mind working with my hosting company to make changes to their server.
I have spoken with the Apple Genius Bar folks and they don't have answers.
    Is this enough information?
    thank you for your help,
    -bill

You bet it can't play what it can't find. Problem is, the file is right where the code says it is. Everything is in place. That is what I am talking about. The files are there. The code points to the right place and yet something doesn't work. I even had Apple Genius staff confirm file structure and naming.
It can't play what it can't find:

    BFE-4699-
    AA40-0F7D430515C1files/200166486-001300x300.mp4
I broke the link (added a space) to keep this from
    stretching this page.
The .mp4 file isn't on the server or is named
    different than the HTML code.

  • Using iWeb to publish to .mac and separate web page

    Hi all,
I have a rather complicated question. I am in the process of developing three web pages: 2 pages will be developed with iWeb and hosted off of .mac. For the third website, I have purchased a domain name and would like to publish it with iWeb.
    Is this too complicated?
How is this done? I have some technical knowledge with regards to website but am new to the apple web publishing world.

To keep things separate create a new user account on your machine for the non .Mac Site.

  • Publishing to a non .mac site

Hi, is there a step by step procedure to publish a site to a non .mac host?
    Thanks

I changed the name, uploaded the folder, and still
    nothing.
When you look at your web space with your ftp program, you should see two items: index.html and a folder called Kiiskakuna. Do you?
    When I hit publish,
it automatically publishes to iMac. I have to use
Cyberduck to upload to the other server. Is this
    correct?
Yes. You do not hit publish, you use the menu item to publish to a folder. It is a good idea to select your desktop as the place to publish to so you don't get mixed up. After publishing that way, you should see two items on your desktop, index.html and a folder called Kiiskakuna. You use Cyberduck to upload these to your web space.
Right now it is clear that there is no index.html in your web space, so you must not have uploaded that. It must be outside the folder Kiiskakuna and it must be the one that iWeb created outside the folder Kiiskakuna. There is another one inside the folder, but that and everything else there should get uploaded automatically when you upload the folder.
What is the name of the topmost page of your site inside the iWeb app?

  • Using iWeb on other servers than dot MAC?

Can people confirm that one can use iWeb with other servers than Apple's dot Mac site? The fine print says: *iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended). So from that I guess it is feasible but is it easy to set up?
    Thanks
    Rudy

After the sales rep at the Apple store confirmed vehemently that I would lose no functionality publishing to my own server, I was disappointed to discover this was not the case.
I wanted to use my own webserver, since there is a perfectly capable apache server already running on my iMac. I do understand that Apple wants to sell their dotmac product, but they have stranded too many users with their approach on iWeb.
I upgraded to iLife 06 specifically for iWeb, and I feel cheated by the withdrawal of functionality unless I buy their dotmac product.

  • Using iWeb to publish to existing domain

I have a domain which is being hosted by an individual. I want to take over the management of it, so I am redesigning it using iWeb. I don't want to publish it to my .mac; I want it to be published at my current domain. (I hope I am articulating this correctly, since I am still pretty green with a lot of the lingo.)
I tried doing this using Transmit. I'm having problems. Does anyone know how to do what I am attempting to do? Thanks so much to anyone who can educate me.

Well first off you need to publish your site to a folder from iweb. Go to file and publish to a folder. This will give you an index.html and folder. Upload both of these to your webspace via transmit. In transmit there are two windows left is your stuff and right is their stuff. Locate you index and folder in the your stuff window. Once you sign in to your host space and connect, simply drag the index.html and the folder over to their space. Depending on how big the site is it may take a minute. And when it stops and goes back to idle your done. I just started using transmit, but I have 3 sites up with no problems. Post back if you need further help. Good luck

  • Using iWeb to publish to different services

    I have iLife 2008, and I also use a dot-Mac account.
I want to publish a handful of different web-sites for different organizations.
One organization would use the dot-Mac account. Another uses a separate web server that has nothing to do with dot-Mac.
There may be a third organization, a local Mac user group, which may need a web-site. If so, it would be published to their own dot-Mac account.
Is it possible to publish different iWeb projects to different places? If so, how is it done?

    Walt:
You may want to have a different iWeb Domain.sites2 file for each of those sites to make managing, editing and publishing easier. I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • Can I use iWeb for my own domain without .mac

I want to use iWeb for creating a simple website. But how can I upload this website to my own domain? Do I need another program. I myself use Dreamweaver. Can I copy the website made in iWeb to dreamweaver? Or... Who can help me out!!!!

You publish to a folder and use an ftp program like Cyberduck, Fetch, or Transmit to upload. I recommend you not use Dreamweaver. Some tips:
