Using iWeb with a hosting service besides .mac?

Hello, I have not yet upgraded to iLife 08, but am deciding whether it is worth it. My question is, is it possible to host your iWeb website on something besides a .mac account (I do not have one). Or is it necessary that you pay the $99 a year to publish your websites? Any suggestions for other sites besides .mac if it is possible? Thanks!

Just registered with a domain and hosting with hostmonster.com, a bit easier to use than Godaddy.com, great customer support, 24/7 friendly voices in Utah, haha. Ridiculous amount of bandwidth and storage space, plus features. You have to switch the CNAME prefs over the phone or submit a support ticket from your control panel (webpage where you control your account), done real quick.
Don't forget that there is also CyberDuck, which is a really good FREE FTP app. I use this more than Transmit or Fetch, although I also like Transmit a lot.

  • Still Use iWeb with Another Hosting Service?

Today, I've officially had it with MobileMe as a web hosting service. Love the sync with my iPhone, but the web hosting has broken my back. But I love iWeb for designing my pages.
Can I use iWeb to design pages that I then post to other hosting sites?

iWeb '09 has three publishing options - MobileMe, built in FTP and to a local folder.
The last method is preferable as it allows you to add tags for search engine optimizing and also to optimize your files for faster download before uploading to your server via a reliable FTP application.
MobileMe is slow, unreliable and has no tech support. It is very limited and doesn't allow you to run scripts or have web email, redirects, form mail etc.

  • Use Iweb with different host?

I am considering purchasing Ilife 2006, because of the iweb feature. Could anyone tell me if it is at all possible to create an iweb site and upload it to a different host and not i.mac?
    thanks
    Nikki

    It is no problem!
I have put two sites up on non .mac accounts. You simply publish to folder and then ftp the files to your web hosting account. Note: When you publish to a folder it will ask you the url of your website to adjust the RSS and Podcast subscribe links.
HOT TIP: It appears that if you try to manage two websites from iWeb, it will create a problem since each time it publishes to a folder, it will adjust the subscribe links which would break them for the site you aren't publishing.
So if you want to work on multiple sites ... I have discovered the secret work-around! When you want to create another site ... create a new user account and launch iWeb from there. This will allow you to create and update a new website without any problems.

  • Using iWeb on other servers than dot MAC?

Can people confirm that one can use iWeb with other servers than Apple's dot Mac site? The fine print says: *iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended). So from that I guess it is feasible but is it easy to set up?
    Thanks
    Rudy

After the sales rep at the Apple store confirmed vehemently that I would lose no functionality publishing to my own server, I was disappointed to discover this was not the case.
I wanted to use my own webserver, since there is a perfectly capable apache server already running on my iMac. I do understand that Apple wants to sell their dotmac product, but they have stranded too many users with their approach on iWeb.
I upgraded to iLife 06 specifically for iWeb, and I feel cheated by the withdrawal of functionality unless I buy their dotmac product.

  • Using LastPass with Safari 6.0 and Mac OS X 10.7

I am considering using LastPass with Safari 6.0 and Mac OS X10.7.  Preliminary due dilligence suggests various problems with loading and running the plugin with Safari 6.0 and Mac OS X which appear to be unresolved.  I will greatly appreciate any user experience with LastPass on the current Mac OS and Safari platforms, as well as any suggestions (i.e., "tips")  for installing and using the plugin (or another more compatible plugin).  Thanks for your consideration.

Found this solution in another thread:
Solution was to stop rapport, quit and restart Safari, turn rapport back on, then quit and restart Safari, all now working.

  • I made a free website using iweb and my host is dropbox but it is not showing in every search engine,i have to use a proxy for my site to pop up

i made a free website using iweb and my host is dropbox but it is not showing in every search engine,i have to use a proxy for my site to pop up

Possibly because dropbox is not really a proper webhost - it might be better if you went and signed up for proper web hosting from somewhere like http://www.godaddy.com or http://www.hostexcellence.com.
Have you told Google that you site exists?  If not, then you need to do so - http://www.google.com/addurl.

  • I have an iPhone 4S Can I use it with any prepaid service?

I am a Verizon customer.  Originally I got an iPhone 4S with Verizon and was mailed my phone.  I activated it on the Verizon network.  However, after a year this phone broke and I had to get a new one.  Verizon did not help with this and I went directly through Apple Warranty.  This phone was shipped to me and I activated it on the Verizon network.  Since this phone was from Apple am I able to use it with and prepaid service if i was to leave Verizon?  I imagine I would....
Thanks in advance for the help!

StraightTalk does not support the use of unlocked GSM iPhones on their network. StraightTalk is a supported CDMA iPhone carrier. Use of an unlocked GSM iPhone on their network is not supported either by them or by Apple.
I'm not saying it won't work at all, I'm saying if you decide to try, you'll have to work out any issues with them.
Now... keep in mind that StraightTalk is owned by Walmart... That's the level of support you can expect to get...

  • Can I use I-Web with other hosting service? (ie not .Mac?)

    HI,
I would like to know if I HAVE to subscribe to .Mac in order to use I-web or can I use my other hosting service to build a snaps website.
It seems that one is bound to sue .Mac, but was not sure if this is the case.
    Rebecca

Yes you can. You will need an FTP program. I downloaded one called Cyberduck that seems to do the job. You can drag and drop individual files or several at once to upload. You will need a host for your domain such as 1and1.com. They give you a user name and password you will need to log on to your site. Good luck!

  • Can you only use Iweb with .mac accounts?

Can I use iweb to build a webiste for a domain I already own with web hosting?

You need another app (specifically, an FTP client). iWeb can only publish directly to .mac or a folder on your computer. There are various FTP programs, but I'm really partial to Transmit 'cause it's really easy and kicks you-know-what.
Quote from the makers of Transmit: "And yes, Transmit 3 is the perfect FTP companion to iWeb."
And no, I don't work for Panic, Inc.

  • Using iWeb to publish to a non.mac domain

Can I use iweb to develop a web site and publish to a domain that is not .mac?
Or can I host a non.mac domain on .mac?

Can I use iweb to develop a web site and publish to a
    domain that is not .mac?
Yes, you can. But not directly from iWeb. You will develop your pages in iWeb but the choose the "Publish to Folder" option. This will put all the files necessary for your website in a folder on your hard drive. You will then need to use an FTP program to upload the site files to your 3rd party web host.
Or can I host a non.mac domain on .mac?
Yes, you can also do this. You can do your pages in iWeb and then "Publish to .Mac". Then you can use "Domain Forwarding" available from your registrar or some other redirecting html to forward people who type in your domain name to you .Mac iWeb URL.
Either method will work fine. You will lose out on .Mac specific features (like slideshows, counters, passwords, comments, search) if you host your pages on a 3rd party web host. Also you lose the ability to do incremental uploads (uploading only changed pages) directly from iWeb if you're not using .Mac.
Good luck to you. If this has been useful information to you, please do me a favor and click the "solved" or "helpful" buttons in the title bar of this reply. Thanks.

  • Is anyone using the Illustrator CC host adapter on Mac?

I'm not able to successfully use the Host Adapater for Illustrator CC on Mac OS.  It's working on Windows and on earlier versions of Illustrator.  I'm using Illustrator CC 17.1.0 and Mac OS 10.9.1.
Is anyone else successfully using the Illustrator CC host adapter plugin on Mac OS? If so, where did you get the host adapter plug-in from, and did you have to do any special "tricks" to install it?
I created a new Extension project in Extenion Builder (licensed copy of EB 2.1), selecting the options to use the Illustrator host adapter libraries.  My extension just has a button that calls the AIEventAdapter.pingPlugIn() function and a list box to show the results (i.e., "pingSucceeded" or "pingTimedOut").  I then used Extension Builder to Export the project as a ZXP and sign it (with a self-generated certificate).  I then installed the test Extension with Extension Manager on my Mac.  All of this completes without any errors, and the AIHostAdapater.aip is in the correct Illustrator Extensions folder.  But when I run the Extension the pingPlugIn() function always returns with the "pingTimedOut" event.  The same Extension correctly results in the "pingSucceeded" event on Illustrator CC on Windows or for earlier versions of Illustrator on both Windows and Mac OS.
Is there a known problem with the Mac OS version of the Illustrator CC host adapter plug-in?  Or an updated version somewhere?
    Thanks.

For someone facing loading issues of AIHostAdapter plugin in CC2014, you can download the same from the following URL

  • Can I use iWeb for my own domain without .mac

I want to use iWeb for creating a simple website. But how can I upload this website to my own domain? Do I need another program. I myself use Dreamweaver. Can I copy the website made in iWeb to dreamweaver? Or... Who can help me out!!!!
    margriet

You publish to a folder and use an ftp program like Cyberduck, Fetch, or Transmit to upload. I recommend you not use Dreamweaver. Some tips:

  • Using iWeb to publish to a non mac account

I guess the question is in the subject.
I'm just wondering if it is possible to use iWeb to create your website, but then send it to a different domain/server?

    nuorder72,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Easily done. Create a new folder on your desktop, and name it for your site. From the file menu in iWeb, choose File/Publish to a folder..., and select this new folder. iWeb will deliever your site, in it's own folder, and the index.html file needed for the site. You will upload both of these as they are to your server, using an ftp client.
Some good tips and more details on this can be found in these notes by Tom Gewecke.
