Using J2EE 1.4 Beta 2 on Windows 98 and Windows Me
I know J2EE isn't supported on Windows 98 and Windows Me, but like many others I've been able to get J2EE 1.3.1 and J2EE 1.4 Beta to work quite well on Windows 98 and Windows Me. However, no such luck when I tried to do the same with J2EE 1.4 Beta 2. Basically, after downloading j2eesdk-1_4-beta2-windows-eval-app.zip, extracting it into C:\j2ee_app_win, and double clicking setup.exe (or setup.dos.exe for that matter), the setup GUI doesn't appear. Has anybody gotten passed this point and gotten it to work?
Basically, J2EE 1.4 Beta 2 setup.exe doesn't work on Windows 98 or Windows Me even with 256 MB of memory. You'll see it appear on the task bar and then disappear right away. The setup task keeps running, so you have to kill it with Ctrl-Alt-Del.
However, J2EE 1.4 Beta 2 does work quite well on Windows XP Home Edition even though it's not supported by Sun. So if you don't have Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000, you can at least try it.

One of the best features of IE might be ActiveX technology. I could be wrong, but some controls are still highly used by websites, and a lot of softwares help rely on HHCTRL ActiveX. I don´t see it *currently* being dropped.
Could be in the future, but not only IE uses Activex, a lot of programs make use of them, not to mention popular ones like Word, Excel.

And you can´t tell if MSHTA, ActiveX and WSH will be totally removed from Windows in the future, it is only a possibility. They are useful. 16 bits apps are not but are still supported on 32-bits Windows. Check out on a 32-bits system, and tell me if
you found some 16-bits apps including C:\windows\system32\command.com.

Can I use an external hard drive to install Windows 7 on a macbook
Hi!
I currently have a 13" retina macbook pro and want to install windows 7 home premium to use on bootcamp. The problem is that my computer does not have a disk drive. So can I use a desktop to put in the windows disk and download it to an external HDD, then install it on my macbook with the external HDD? Or do I have to use a USB. Also, does anyone know of a place I can just download Windows 7 Home premium 64bit?
ThanksHi! If your macbook doesn't have a cd drive you need to have Windows 7 but an ISO image, you can't just copy the contents of the copy into a USB and expect it to work. There are many tutorials on internet on how to obtain an ISO image from an installation disc, for example: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/software-tools/a/create-iso-image-file.htm As for "just download Windows 7" (i suppose you mean free download) this is not the right place to ask, believe me. I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion installed, but my CD drive inside my computer is damaged*, and it's far cheaper to buy an external CD drive than to repair it entirely. Before I do either, I would like some grasp of whether or not it's worth my time and money, as I've yet to order the external drive or make a genius bar appointment.
Also, the reason I'm choosing Windows 8 (Beta) is because it's free.
*I dropped my computer once two years ago. I haven't even used my CD drive until recently when trying to install Windows 8. I assume the drop was the issue. I've used compressed air to remove dirt/dust as well as resetting the PRAM multiple times and nothing seems to work, but I'm not worried about it.

1: Apple only supports Windows 7 at this time in BootCamp (direct install into a bootable partition) because Win 8 is in Beta and no Mac hardware drivers are available yet from Apple for Windows 8.
2: You can't install Windows from a external cd drive into BootCamp, it has to be a internal one far as I know, perhaps a USB will work I don't know.

1: You can download and install Windows 8 Beta into a the free virtual machine software called VirtualBox, which Windows 8 will run in a window in OS X. This is better as it's still in Beta and Windows Beta releases will expire. Plus Windows 8 is a pain in the behind and you will want to be able to have VirtualBox or OS X be able to regain control over the computer.

Unable to use j2ee -stop or the deploytool
I am a J2EE newbie. I have recently installed j2sdkee1.3.1 on Windows XP. The J2SDK version I am using is j2sdk1.4.0_01.
I can start the J2EE server successfully and view http://localhost:8000/index.html.
However, I am unable to stop the server using j2ee -stop. When I try to start deploytool, it hangs.
Any suggestionsI am havgin the same problem. When I try to stop I get error as:

I downloaded and installed the J2EE 1.4 Beta 2 and I am unable to start the server. I keep getting the same message:

J2EE 1.4 beta 2, W2K and Petstore hopeless

I can deploy the petstore application in J2EE 1.4 beta 2. It works, but only once. After a manual restart of the app server, the I get status 404.
I recognized a message in the deploy process.

I'm currently developping an image processing algorithm using Labview 7.1 and the associated IMAQ Vision tools. After several tests, I found a weird result. Indeed, I put the labview algorithm - including the IMAQ VI on the library to get sure that I use all the time the same VI - on my memory stick and used it on two different computers. I tested the same picture (still in my memory stick) and had two very different results.
After several hours trying to understand why, I found that there were a difference between the results given by both computers at the very begining of the algorithm. Indeed, I used a JPEG file.
To open it, I first create an Image with IMAQ Create (U8). Then, I open it.
Then in my first sub-VI, I use IMAQ Cast Image to be sure that the picture is a U8 grayscale picture.
Right after that, I use the IMAQ Linear Averages. The results of this VI are different on the two computers.
I tried several time on the same picture : one computer always give me the same result but the two computers give me a different result. So there is no random variable on the results.
So my question is : Do IMAQ Cast Image or IMAQ Linear averages give different results when using different computers that are running under Windows XP ?
My bet is on IMAQ Cast Image but I'm not quite sure and I do not undestand why. The labview and IMAQ are the same on both computers.
The difference between the two computer are above :
Computer 1 :
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz with a RAM of 1Go. The processor is an Intel(R).
The OS is windows XP Pro 2002
Computer 2 :
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz with a RAM of 512Mo. The processor is an Intel(R).
The OS is windows XP Pro 2002.
If anybody can help me on this problem, it would be really helpful.

Then give them reasons. TCO. In-house experience and skills with Linux. Official support from vendors like Sun for Linux on their servers. Linux being used as the core development platform for Oracle. Linux proven as a cluster-based operating system - it leads the supercomputer/cluster market by a significant percentage.

Well not to get off topic but your company needs a new IT guy. You can slipstream all the updates into an install image and for that matter you can take one PC, updates it, create an image from it and use a universal install feature to image any PC with that updated image.

Can't uninstall firefox beta release on Windows XP as you discribe
I can't uninstall Firefox 8 beta on my Windows XP as you describe. It appears "''Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now?''" Rebooting does not solve the problem. When installing a new version the same message appears. When checking for updates appears "''Firefox is up to date''".

The above refers to an error attempting to start Firefox but the same solution might work for errors when attempting to uninstall Firefox (delete the file '''firefox.exe.moz-upgrade''' from the folder where Firefox is installed, then run the uninstaller.) See also [[Uninstalling Firefox]].
