Using Kontakt 4 as a plug-in, Logic Express sounds strange

I use Kontakt Player 4.1 as a standalone for GalaxyPianos and the sound is luscious and natural the keyboard plays like a Grand. When I use the same instance in Logic Express 9, it sounds cheap. The sound is flanged, it changes in quality from one note to the next. Not a huge amount mind you. Someone who was not a muso might say it sounds no different but it is very different.
I load everything as a standard, default new project with a software instrument, all default values. I have also tried loading mono, stereo, multi stereo etc and still it just doesn't sound right. What is produced by Kontakt as a standalone is way better than I am getting when it plays as a plug-in.
There are no load or latency issues but if I play a note the velocity seems noticeably lower in Logic than the stand alone. It almost sounds as though Logic is adding something to the sample.
Any ideas?

Aaaahhh, i see you have the same keyboard as I - the Roland RD700SX
make sure you have only 1 Layer button activated (let's say: upper 1). If you have selected all 4 layers, the RD700SX will output 4 notes at once (one for each active layer), and this may lead to crazy effects with Logic. So, press the "External" button on the RD700SX and de-activate "upper 2", "lower 1&2" or set them to different zones.
If you need the layers to trigger different instances of software instruments in Logic, make sure you have "auto demix by channel" activated in the logic MIDI recording preferences.

  • Deleting plug ins + Logic Express

Hi I have recently bought Logic 8 studio and dont need logic express 7. i cant seem to delete the entire program. does anyone know how to completely wipe Logic express 7 from the system drive?
also im using Toontrack's DFH Superior drum sample plug in. i dont need this anymore and would like to uninstall this too. how do you unistall audio plug ins on a mac?
    cheers

Josh since I've never used Logic I really can't say. I did however find this:
Another approach you might consider is reinstalling Logic Express. To do this effectively, you need to remove the application and its receipts, then install Logic Express and use Software Update to install additional updates. You don't have to remove everything that was installed with Logic Express. Follow the steps below to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Logic Express. Note: Make sure that you have your installation discs and serial number handy before starting this.
    Open the Applications folder.
Drag the Logic Express application to the Trash.
    Go to /Library/Receipts.
In the Receipts folder, select the "Logic Express.pkg" file.
Choose View > as List to view the contents in a list.
Click the Date Modified column header so you can easily see all of the receipts that were installed at the same time as Logic Express.
Drag the Logic Express.pkg receipt to the Trash, as well as any other items that have the same modification date within 3 minutes of the Logic Express.pkg's modification date.
Click the Name column header to sort the list alphabetically.
Drag any other receipts whose names begin with "Logic Express" to the Trash.
Insert your Logic Express installation disc and install Logic Express.
When finished, use Software Update (under the Apple menu) to update your software to the latest version.
It concerns removing Logic Express and reinstalling as a troubleshooting measure. However I would assume you could use it as a guide in just plain uninstalling.

  • Help  how can I use a prev tube chanel street in logic express

hello may english is so bad so sorry , I have a cuestion: I have a power book G4 and digi design Mbox and a dbx 376 vacuum tube channel strip whith spdif w/digital out. I wont to record in may Mbox using the s/pdif but the logic express 7.2 dont recognize it, I do it whith any problem in pro tools 7 . thanks for your support and be good

To have the mbox working you have to install the Digidesign core audio driver v.7.1.1 that is bundled with Pro Tools LE 7.1.1.
But keep in mind that Digi drivers are often faulty.

  • Using the MXL USB.006 microphone with logic express 7.2.3

When I have the USB audio codec selected in logic express 7.2.3 (macbook pro, intel dual core) I cant get any sound from my speakers on the laptop, or the headphones I use with the laptop headphone jack. I can record vocals but can't hear playback. If I switch to the built-in audio driver for the macbook pro, I can hear the vocal I recorded on the MXL, but with the built-in driver selected, I can't record with the mic.
Is there a solution for this?

    Hi md,
I think if you look up Aggregate device in help it's what you need. You create one in Audio MIDI set up which allows for input via the USB microphone, and output through built in audio. Then Select it in Mac Sound Preferences.

  • Using an effect/plug-in on several sound files?

Trying out Adobe Audition, but finding a few quirks compared to working with Bias Peak (RIP).
For example, in Waveform mode, it seems effects in the effects rack (AU and VST plug-ins) are directly related to one, and one only, sound file.
In Peak, you could easily have effects applied to any sound file you would open, and it happened automatically. Is something similar possible in Audition? Without saving the effects rack as a preset every time I want to use one or several particular plug-ins on *another* sound file?

Well then, Bias was a bit of a dog. Any software that did things like that automatically would be a bit of a dog, quite frankly. Automatic anything is generally a sign of Mickey-Mousedness in software, and we don't want that at all, thank you. It's almost certainly one of the reasons that Bias is no more, indeed.
But if I'm understanding correctly what you want to do, there's a much better way in Audition anyway. It's called Batch Processing. The idea is that you can take a bunch of files, specify what processing you want to do to them (you have to have saved whatever you want to do as a preset first) and have it applied automatically to all of the files you specify. So if you've got 100 files that you want to normalize to the same level, put them all in a folder, specify the preset, specify a different location and name prefix for the results if you want, press Run and go and have a cup of coffee. When you come back, it will probably all be done and waiting for you.
Thing about Audition is that because it's been used for earning a living by a lot of editors now, for a long time, just about all of the really useful things are already in it, and there's at least one way of doing pretty much anything - when you know how to.

  • Problems Using Logic Express with Alesis Multimix 8

    Hi,
Does anybody have any experience of using the Alesis Multimix 8 USB with Logic Express 7.0.1? As far as I can tell the software is set up OK. The problem is that there is an awful amount of noise present on both the input and the output (sounds like inordinatley loud dither). The problem is also present on Garageband and iTunes but not with Cubase LE (bundled in with the Multimix).
I have searched and searched the internet for drivers for the Multimix but with no luck. At the moment I am just using the "core audio" USB codec drivers that are built in as I seem to have no other option.
Does anybody have any suggestions before I go ahead and buy another external audio interface? (got my eye on the new Behringer F-CONTROL AUDIO FCA202)
    Rev. G Rock
PS I am running OS X (10.3.9) on a G4 iBook (1.33 GHz, 1.25 GB RAM) and have done all the updates available for Logic Express 7.0(.1)
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

OK I understand it's helpful to others to post solutions should you find them so here goes:
It would seem that the problem is with the built in CODEC used by OS X. You can update using the drivers available at http://www.usb-codec.com
I used the demo version to see if it solved the problem which it did. However you need to buy the software to get rid of the annoying beep every 30 secs on the demo version. well worth it to get my hardware working properly though.

  • Grouping the logical expressions in IF condition is not working

    Hi Experts,
My requirement is to group the logical expressions in IF condition like the below
    I tried it like
    IF ( &NAST-KSCHL& = 'ZBE0' OR &NAST-KSCHL& = 'ZBEC' ) AND ( &VBDKR-SPRAS& <> 'F' )
      code...
    ELSEIF
      Code....
    ELSE
       code...
    ENDIF
But the system is showing the grouping in the IF condition is wrong. The problem is i am not supposed to break that AND condition and put it as another IF inside the first IF condition.
    Pls provide your valuable inputs.
    Thanks,
      Srinivas

    Hi,
Sometimes to play with sap script editor becomes very much difficult if you have scenario like as you mentioned..
Type this, and i hope it will work..
    /:     IF &NAST-KSCHL& = 'ZBE0' OR &NAST-KSCHL& = 'ZBEC'
    /:     IF &VBDKR-SPRAS& =  'F'
    your code..
    /:     ENDIF
    /:     ELSEIF <LOGICAL EXP>
    /:     IF &VBDKR-SPRAS& =  'F'
    your code..
    /:     ENDIF
    /:     ENDIF
Now please try to use one more IF statement, give the logical expression same as in ELSEIF
Although it is time consuming  but sill you can try..

    Hi,
    thank you for the reply.
I spoke to an apple genius the other day and he mentioned that i could use the old mac wirelessly to load logic express on my new mac, without the need for transferring and using up memory on the new drive?
any idea how this is done?

  • Garageband sounds vs Logic Express

    Hi All,
I'm new here and I apologize if this has been covered in an existing post. I've searched a lot and not found an answer to my specific question...
I've read that the loops that come with Logic Express sound better than those that come with Garageband. I understand that Logic's instruments sound better. I'm thinking about upgrading to Logic Express for this reason (and others).
But what I would like to know, is upon upgrading to Logic Express, will my existing Garageband loops sound any better?
If a Garageband loop is just a simple audio sample, then I wouldn't expect any improvement. But if the loop is based on a MIDI instrument - then would it make sense that Logic could provide a better "engine" for all those existing instruments?
To take it one step further, how do the Jam Packs apply to this? I'm thinking of getting one of them. If the instruments in the Jam Pack only sound as good as Garageband instruments, then is it really worth getting it if you have Logic?
    Any advice is much appreciated!
macboook core 2 duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi noeqplease
I think my problem is that I still don't understand exactly what makes up a "loop".
If a loop is just an audio sample, then I understand why it will sound the same using any software. I also understand that Logic will be able to get more out of that sample - because it has more tools to apply to that sample.
However, take a look at this quote from the following Jam Pack review article:
    http://www.tweakheadz.com/reviewof_garagebandjampacks.htm
"In a typical Jam Pack you get loops AND audio instruments. The "blue" loops are straight audio loops and are typically of high quality. They can be stretched, compressed, effected, like any other audio track. But the "green" loops in the browser are actually an audio instruments with a MIDI track associated."
After reading that, it sounds like some loops are really just MIDI files which point to a certain instrument. Therefore, if you get all new (and better) instruments with Logic, then maybe all those loops will sound better.
So here's where I ask again:
-is it true that some loops aren't hard samples, but rather depend on the quality of your instrument synthesizer?
-if so, will installing Logic make those loops sound better? (i.e. does Logic have better instruments to use for all the old Garageband loops? - OR does Logic only provide new and better instruments for the new loops included with Logic?)
-if so, what % of Jam Pack loops are "green" and would get the benefit of being used with Logic vs GB?
    thanks again!!

  • Novice Logic Express user has Midi setup problems

Hi, folks. I'm a novice Logic Express 7 user (I used a much earlier version as a sequencing package a very long time ago). I've just installed Logic Express 7 on my Mac OS X and connected my Technics PCM Digital Piano PX 107 to the Mac via a MIDIsport UNO midi interface. There's some stuff happening (and not happening) that I don't understand yet.
Firstly, I can see on the transport window that midi in and out are both registering events, but I am getting a wierd echo of very low notes coming back through the keyboard speakers, making it impossible to make any sense of what I am playing.
Secondly, if I turn the volume off on the digital piano, I can't hear anything at all, even when midi events are being registered.
Thirdly, I don't appear to be able to record anything. Once I click record, the midi seems to stop functioning altogether.
Lastly, my midi metronome click comes back through my keyboard speakers as a very low note.
Should I have my keyboard volume turned up at all? (My guess is I shouldn't, but I can't hear anything at all at the moment if I turn it down). And can anyone help me with these perplexing problems. All contributions very gratefully received, thanks.
    Mac OS X   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I think you need to figure out how to turn off local playback on your keyboard. You are probably hearing the sound from your keyboard as you are playing, plus the sound that the keyboard plays when Logic is sending midi notes.
There appears to be another problem that your midi is being transposed down in Logic. That would explain the low "echo" and low metronome click.
All the sounds are being made by your keyboard--that's why you can't hear anything when you turn it down. What is it that you are trying to do? Do you want to record midi and have that play back through your keyboard, or do you want to just use your keyboard as a controller for Logic's sounds?

  • Logic Express 7.2.1 - GarageBand 3 projects open correctly

If you've ever opened up a GarageBand 3 project into Logic Express 7.2 and heard no audio, you will want this new update. The main reason why GB 3 projects did not play sound when opened in Logic Express 7.2 is related to these projects using more busses than were available in Logic Express 7.2. Logic Express version 7.2.1 now features 12 busses, up from 8 in 7.2.
Hopefully, this will solve the majority of the 'no audio' issues GB users have when opening their projects into Logic Express.

    Sweet eh?
    Thanks & regards,

  • Best way to use Kontakt in Logic

Hi all, Ive been looking a the best procedure to work with kontakt. At this point, the simpler solution for me as been to open an instance of kontakt for every instrument track. I do a lot of midi orchestral programming so I tried to use kontakt as a multi timbral instrument but found it annoying to have to assign aux channel to each instrument. (I could create a template) I tried to automate midi volume and found out that I had to drag the automation in kontakt on the fader. What I dont like is that every instrument track created in a multimbral are linked together and it is a pain to automate each of them individually. Iw ish their was an option to unlink individual instrument track within a multitimbral instrument.
    I hope Im clear enough.
    Thanks for your light.

A colleague of mine just gave me a great tip on a way of easily controlling the individual instruments of a Kontakt 3 instant's volume with track-based automation in Logic's Arrange page without having to create Aux channels, etc. Here's the procedure:
    - add multi-instrument from Logic’s arrange (using no. of channels you want for that instance of Kontakt 3)
    - in Kontakt 3, load instruments you want
    - click on “Auto” tab at left
    - drag “assigned to” column for #001 to track 1’s volume at right
    - drag “assigned to” column for #002 to track 2’s volume at right (and so on)
Back in Arrange, highlight the first Kontakt channel you created. Enable Automation mode by hitting "A". Choose the controller specified above for the associated track and automate THAT to control volume internally on the Kontakt3’s individual patch within a given instance!
I've tried it and it definitely works with a Powermac Dual 2ghz G5 running the latest version of Tiger and Logic 8, and Kontakt 3 (though it doesn't seem to work with Kontakt 2?)
Best and hope this is helpful -

  • Kontakt as plug in or standalone In Logic Express?

I run Logic Express in a Mac book with 2,4 Ghz dual core 2 and I have 2 giga ram.
I recently got Kontact, how is better to run it as a AU on every instrument track
or in a Standalone version routing the outputs to Logic. It seems to me that the CPU works alot now that I use it as AU plugin and i get lot of Audio warning that the system is overload.I dont use audio tracks only midi tracks.
    Do I need more ram?
    Thanks for help

    Hi,
1st: upgrade to 4GB RAM for serious Kontakt usage.
2nd: The CPU usage is there wether you run standalone or plugin. But as a plugin, you can make better use of Logic's automation and these things. If you search about CPU handling in Logic, you can see how to lift some load off it when running heavy plugins. Basically, raise the buffer size and have an empty audio track selected while playing back your MIDI project to prevent CPU breakdowns. Having an active software instrument track selected puts Logic in a kind of "focused" mode where it reserves huge CPU ressources waiting for realtime processing of MIDI inputs to this software instrument. Having an empty Audio track selected makes Logics realtime processing more relaxed.
