Using LaCie external for chosen files

I've been running TM for about a year & to be honest I'm not a big fan only because I have an older iMac from 2005 & it eats up a lot of memory & power making my Mac virtually useless every hour when TM backs up. I tried using one of those TM editors but there was some bug that ended up making it run out of control one early morning frying my hard drive, so no more of that!
I just want to backup my most important stuff, iTunes library, iPhoto, mail & maybe a folder that houses my most recent resume & I know I don't need to run TM for that. I'm just not sure how I can use my LaCie 500GB without using TM, how can I bypass TM? And how would I setup my LaCie?
Or is it just time for a newer more powerful Mac?
Any help would be appreciated.

True, but it shouldn't take very long or a whole lot of CPU, especially via FireWire. F/W is somewhat faster than USB, and takes less of your Mac's CPU, as the F/W chipset does part of the work.
So if the backups are slowing things down appreciably, do try the things in #D2.

Like many folks here, I use Time Machine as my primary backups, plus a bootable "clone." I use CarbonCopyCloner (listed in Kappy's post), SuperDuper is similar.
The clones have advantages and disadvantages vs. Time Machine. They take much longer and more CPU to do an incremental backup, so most folks run them daily, or even weekly. I have my Mac scheduled to wake up early each morning, and a CCC "update" runs shortly thereafter, while I'm still snoozing. So I don't notice it at all!
The downside is, of course, it doesn't have the hourly incremental backups, so I can't recover a previous version of something I've changed or deleted in error, or that has somehow been corrupted.
If you want to stop TM altogether, you can turn it off and erase the LaCie with Disk Utility, then start with another app.
Or you could turn TM off, partition the LaCie, if there's enough room, and put a clone in the new partition (it should be the same size as your internal HD, or 20% larger than the data on your internal HD if that's smaller). See #6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Then you could also run the occasional TM backup via +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your menubar, or just keep the TM backups for a while until you're comfy with the clone.
As Kappy mentions, CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while before sending them some $$ so they can keep it up to date. SD has a free version, but it can't be scheduled to run automatically, and will only do a full replacement. You'd need the paid version (about $30) for that.

Because sync requires to use persistent storage locations. This is out of Adobe's control. It is entirely up to the hardware vendor how he anchors the drive/ volume and integrates it into the file and folder structure.

But actually I don't want to show the \ (backslashes) to the user in my text box.
Ok let me elaborate this problem little more.
I want to show my text box as it is in normal editors e.g. In Matlab editor. There is a text box and on left side the gray bar shows the line numbers corresponding to the text. Further more i want that the user should be able to click on any line number to mark specific line as breakpoint (red circle or any graphical indication for mark).

HT201250 Backup using lacie external drive with time machine

Hi, I recently backed up my macbook with a lacie external hard drive using time machine. However, when i try to open my photos, which says there is 11.67GB there, nothing happens. It only opens an empty file. After my backup i deleted the photos from my laptop, after all i was trying to clear disc space on my macbook. Can i resolve this or can i open the file in a different way? Help

You can achive it using the deployment scripts if the directory is changing on the basis of the environment
If you want to change at run time than you can use the jca properties to set using the variables at runtime.

In the above code, I have hard-coded the values, and it works fine like that.
However, when I try to override these values by defining properies in BPEL invoke's tag, the values are getting passed as null.

I have successfully used this API and it works fine.
Try to use variables which contains values like "dummyCopy.txt" etc.
Here is what I used :

Problem in using different format for Image files

We are generating a report wherein the logo (Image File) is changed with respect to the company's location.
Here, we are making use of a Text field using a formula column as its source for getting the file path.
When the Size is kept as "Expand" or "Variable", then, when the image size changes considerably, it gives problem, wherein the logo is not displayed.
Then we increased the size of the logo field and kept thte size type as Fixed. But the probnlem which we face is because of the .bmp format which the report accepts.
This is because, when the format type is bmp, upon increasing the resolution or size of the bmp increases the size by several folds( say from 70kb to almost 1000 or 1500kb) which leads to the error "Memory cannot be read" and leads to abrupt application termination.
Is their any way by which i can make use of GIF format for the image file and at the same time change the file name at runtime.

You can only use one Apple ID with iTunes match. Purchasing another match subscription using wife's Apple ID is not a solution. I can only suggest that you use your ID for match and all iTunes music purchases.

is also unique.No, since the number of MD5 hashes is less than the number of possible files. Of course, if you don't have many files the probability of clashes is pretty low. There's some theory about this which you'll find in algorithms textbooks where they talk about hash tables.

Disconnected Use(with external drive)= Corrupted file structure

Help. Really like the way LR handles RAW. Big problem for me is that my Mac Book Pro HD is too full. I'm using an EHD from OWC(FW800). If I launch LR with the drive unmounted LR starts verifying files and pulling all sorts of garbage into the LR Folder panel. If I reconnect the drive there is no repair and only a fraction of the files show up with their terminal folder- the folder structure on the EHD is flattened to useless. Fatal flaw? or my error?

Hi Dan- Happy to try and help. It has happen under 2 scenarios, the lrdb files are at MacHD/users/srp/pictures/LightRoom/...irdb in both cases.
Scenario 1: I had a folder with some duplicates in MAC HD/users/...pictures/My Photos/duplicate files. When I would dismount the EHD and launch LR it would pull the dups on the Mac HD into the DB and reference what looked to be temps for missing files as well with fairly random preview distribution. The EHD file structure is OWC/users/srp/pictures/My Photos/files by date.
Scenario 2: I ditched the duplicate folders on the MAC HD (they were not referenced in LR before disconnect anyway) and launched LR. It initiates checking for files and photos again and pulled random preview references to odd files replacing the original folder structure. In this case there were no valid references to pull so it was mostly garbage, it did preserve a few "?" files.

My work around is that I delete the lrdb and replace it with a clean copy, better than re-importing everything.

How to use lz4 compression for RAW file inside DNG ?

I know DNG supports zip compression. However, I want to use lz4 compression, as I am saving the file in realtime, and I cannot see any zip library matching the performance of lz4 for 16-bit RAW.
In my case this is 12-bit data with 4 bits set to zero.

Is there a study that compared the encoding speeds of the 3 algorithms available for RAW files ?
LZW, Packbits, Deflate.
I think Lossless JPEG can also work with 1 plane setting.
Also, looking at the dng_validate code, and the calls to relevant libraries, I see that the code seems to deal only with byte boundaries.
Are any of these algorithms optimized for 10,12,14-bit RAW data ?
I am trying to encode 203 MBps of data. Intel IPP would be an option, but its obviously nicer if DNG SDK can provide whats needed for free with some tweaking.

What all I am trying to ask is how could I write xml data to external file by clicking a button or a link etc.. which is in the JSF page.
Now for that I created a button and dragged the <af:fileDownloadActionListener> into the button.
I binded the listener with the backing bean method.

in the writer object writer I am getting the content of the myDoc inorder to convert that to string as it will be in xml format.
When I am writing every thing I can download and save the document but unable to see the data that I have written that is "*sai*" instead a blank page is getting opened.
When I do the same with Creating a file object in the local disc using File f = new File(path) rather than downloading it using the listener I can see the contents what I have written.
This is what all I mean to ask. Kindly come up with your help

Title pretty much states it all. I initially set out (as part of a Security Forensics initiative) to identify the most recently installed applications, modified files, and registry key changes using PowerShell. I attempted to pull this information and sort
them by date installed/last modified, but it was brought to my attention this information isn't always present and can be modified - so it's not accurate.
At that time it was suggested we use Group Policy auditing for Registry and File System - but I'm not sure how I'm going to use/pull these in PowerShell? This will be used on remote host all over the world so local physical access isn't an option.
My question is:
Once Group Policy Auditing for Registry and File System has been enabled, how would I go about pulling those audit logs for review once a system has been identified as compromised? I'm brand new to this GP Auditing (we have a separate team for that) so feel
free to take it from the beginning. :)

Mapping to an IDOC using an externally created XSL file

I want to map a message to an IDoc using an ABAP XSLT transform. I am creating the XSLT in an external tool.
I need to use an XSD definition of the IDOC as the target document of the mapping. I can get that in two ways:
1) Get the XSD definition of the IDOC from transaction WE60 and use the menu command 'Documentation -> XML Schema'
2) In the Integration Repository, export the XSD of the imported IDOC.
The problem is, there are significant syntax differences between these versions, and I don't know which is the correct version. For instance, the XSD exported from the Integration Repository has a mandatory attribute 'SEGMENT' for each segment that must be filled to create a valid XML message; this is not the case when the XSD definition is created in WE60.
Can somebody advise which is the correct version to use?

This is really strange...
In both case XSD should be same...can you please tell for which idoc you are generating xsd?
Eventhough if you generate XML Schema using WE60, mandatory attribute 'SEGMENT' for each segment has to be there....this validation would be done while posting idoc. It will check for all mandatory fields.
I have some different thoughts that what wojciech has suggested...
"If were your shoes I would use xsd from integration repository because that's the expected result...."
But final goal is not to achieve mapping but posting idoc with proper data in R/3 system successfully.

ummm...I think if you assign constant "1" to segment it will generate that segment while creating idoc. Its mandatory to assign constant value to segment which you want to generate...

I dont think so Idoc adapter will fill this attribute automatically...you need to assign constant to field segment.

How to get LR using unique names for each file?

Hey there,
I see LR does modify the name of the File when there is already one file with the same name in the folder of import, but once you choose a different folder it does import the File with the original name. I just realized that over the years using Folders such as Pictures 2009, Pictures 2010 and so on, I have three or four times Files with the same Name. Is there a way to tell LR to always use unique names when it imports?

Use a date-description-sequence.ext naming template for renaming as you import [or if you prefer after you import]. This means you never have duplicates unless you for some bizarre reason use same name description for two sets of files on same day. And if you need to do just that, simply make the start number of second/third lot of files be one number greater than previous batch from same day.
You can set up what ever naming format you desire in file rename dialogue and have that as your default.
Leaving files names as they come out of the camera is asking for big trouble as invariably they will duplicate, which is not a good idea even if in different folders.
F2 gets you renaming dialogue when in Library.
