Using LaCie's 2 TB Little Big Disk with Thunderbolt

My system is a 2011 MacBook Pro 2.5GHz with 4 GB memory running Mac OS X 10.7.2 with all latest OS updates.
First I must say this device is very cool, stylish, functions well and performs well. However, performance correlates with file sizes and the RAID-0 block size chosen. One must experiment some with this to obtain the required performance.
Using Disk Utility's software RAID features I reconfigured the 2 TB into 3 RAID-0 partitions. One was a RAID-0 with size of 150 GB; one was another RAID-0 with size of 150 GB; and a third RAID-0 was the remaining size of 1.7 TB. My intent was to use the two 150 GB RAID-0 partitions for cloning my internal HD's boot volume, and the 1.7 TB partition for user data.
I've used CCC to try to create the "HD Recovery" partition on the RAID-0 150 GB partition and CCC refuses and aborts with error saying it cannot perform the task. I've not figured out how to resolve this yet. Question: If anyone has a fix for this please respond... thanks.
I was able to clone to the RAID-0 150 GB partition using both SD! and CCC. My first attempt to boot from this LaCie RAID-0 150 GB partition failed for some reason even after selecting it in the Startup Disk panel. The display simply showed the "no entry" logo indicating it could not detect a bootable image. I used a Restart with Option key pressed to get to the boot menu and then selected the LaCie and it booted nicely. Running the system from the LaCie was no problem and performance of the system was acceptable.
Using AJA, the best performance I've seen writing and reading a 20 GB file created with Apple's mkfile command was around 150 MB/sec. Not too shabby IMO.
I do not have any issue with the units fan noise as it's not objectionable to my ears. Hiding it under desk or in desk enclosure eliminates most of the noise for me.
I did connect the LaCie's 2nd Thunderbolt port to my 60" Sony Bravia flat screen and the color rendition was awful. Connecting the Sony directly to my 2011 MacBook Pro's Thunderbolt port produced excellent color rendition on the TV screen. Called LaCie Tech Help and they simply said connect TV to the LaCie was not tested and not supported... only Thunderbolt devices are supported...!!!! (Shame)
The Desktop icon for the LaCie Thunderbolt device is boring and has no Thunderbolt lightening logo on its face... (shame), and Apple should/will fix this hopefully.
The power brick is really not too large -- slightly smaller than a cigarette box of 20 and just a bit thicker... 3" long, 1.5" deep and 2" wide.
I would certainly recommend this device to a friend.
Overall, I give this unit 4 stars after having used it for a week.

Have you checked to see what kind of times are you getting when booting from the LBD?  An internal SSD is most probably faster but for those with standard HDD in their Macbook Pros it would be interesting to see what kinds of boot times you can get with this thing.

  • There is no display on Apple Thunderbolt display, when Daisy chain connect with six LaCie Little Big Disks.

    Hi, Everyone,
I have aquestion with Thunderbolt daisy chan.
I have six LaCie Little Big Disks and Apple Thunderbolt Display to make daisy chan and I got a problem.
I place the Apple Thunderbolt Display at the end of the chain, and six LaCie Little Big Disks infront, and Apple Thunderbolt Display does not show anything.
If I plac the dell u2711 (DP1.1) Display at the end of the chain, and six LaCie Little Big Disks infront , dell u2711(DP1.1) displays.
If I place the Apple Thunderbolt Display at the end of  the chain, and five LaCie Little Big Disks infront. Apple Thunderbolt Displays well.
Is it because the hardware limitation that Thunderbolt daisy chan can only have maximum 6 Thunderbolt deivce?
Apple Thunderbolt Display Should be DP1.2, why it doesn’t display?
My workstation running Windows 7x64 or Windows8.1x64
    Thanks ,Myron

if you reduce the number of disks to 5 and the display works, I think we'll have your answer.

  • Little big disk slow

    Hi Forum
I purchased a little big disk 512 ssd for video editing
the unit works great with my laptop achives extreme speeds that i require for handling large projects (well usually 230 gbs per job usually 3 per month)
I recently upgraded to an imac late 2013 model (current model and i maxed out the optionals)
it uses the 3tb fusion drive tho
when i plug in the little big disk into my imac it mounts fine and i can read data fine - however i cannot write data to it at least not quickly it takes 6 hours to transfer 100gb compared to the 10 or so minutes using my laptop
the copy hangs appx every 50mb for about 30 seconds and then jumps up another 50mb (i can confirm the cable is not faulty as i get this result using 2 seperate cables)
i tried all the usual steps - restart - repaired disk permissions - even reset the pRam
i noticed after resetting the pRam that for the first 10 seconds i am able to use the drive normally and then if i have large files copying after about 10 seconds the problem shows again  and the copy hangs at the point it got up to (anything i copy in the first 10 seconds is super fast as the drive should be)
my theory and the support at lacie is that somhow the boot drive is interfering with the transfer - the lacie specialist suggests that since fusion drives arent very common yet and havent been tested there may be a conflict ...
i have tried copying from a daisychained thunderbolt drive directly to the new hdd and still experience the problem so i dont think it is a prblem with the internal drive
black magic disk speed test and it show a perfect working disk and gets files on and off it easily but not anything i want to copy will work
it soesnt matter the file mp3 or mov small or big the same problem happens
i have reconfigured the raid and reformated the drives with the laCie support
they think its a 100% normal functioning drive and that the problem is with my imac as the drive works on all other computers that i have tried
really im stumped and dont know what i should try next to get the hdd and my imac to become compatable
Can i get apple to diagnose it remotely
    do they do that?

    Hi there MSPoettl,
I updated to the new firmware for the 24' when it was released. This largely fixed the problem, although the Lacie's fan makes a very airy noise as it blows. The image on the 24' led apple careen is stable, so good news there. However when plugging the MBair into the Lacie and then into a 27' iMac I still get occasional distortion.
    Good luck.

  • Little "big" problem with Reports 9i...

    Hi to all.
I've a little "big" problem when i launching reports on the web. The reports services it's under SUN Solaris 5.9 and de 9iAS 9.0.2. Well when i launch the report the reports server give me this error: "REP-108: File '/tmp/pfj66590734.gif' not found.".
The report have a chart, and the chart it's the problem, if i delete the graph(chart) the report run fine. In the Reports Server file config in the tmpDir, have specified this directory but, not find the gif.
Can be a problem of the chart with the reports engine?
    I don't know.
Anybody have which that's the problem.
    Thanx in advance. Oscar.

I was facing the same problem when running a report with embedded chart graphics, and every time we tried running it we got an error message like the one below, where the gif file name changed every time:
    REP-108: File 'd:\ora9ias\reports\temp\pfj30143486.gif' not found
    Our solution was:
After a lot of research and troubleshooting we found out that if we compiled the report in a different machine (the developers') and deployed to the server it worked fine, the problem was the settings (registry and path variables) in the machine that was compiling the report (Our software release machines). I can't say exactly what were the settings changes right now, but try under someone else's machine, its the configuration of reports builder.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using a FAT32-formatted drive as backup disk with Time Machine

For strange and perverse reasons of my own, I'd like to use a FAT32-formatted external hard drive with Time Machine. Is this possible?

No, Time Machine needs a HFS+ formatted drive for its backup folder:
Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended Journaled.
_A solution_ if you still want to use the same drive for TM backup and for some Windows files:
Partition the drive before you start using it.
    1) Format it (using Disk Utility) as Mac OS Extended
    2) Make two partitions.
    3) Now you can format Partition2 as FAT32, so you have then two different volumes with each its own format.

  • RAID Slice Failed on my 2tb Lacie Little Big Drive

I was working in FCPX 10.8 on my Macbook Air using my 2tb Lacie Little Big Drive with thunderbolt connection when I got an improper disk removal message pop up. I hadn't removed the cable and the power had been on all of the time. From then on I couldn't get my drive to mount. I was working from this drive that is RAID 0. I have also tried the drive on my imac but no joy either.
I have used disk utility to verify and it says that all seems ok. But when you look at one of the RAID Slices it says Failed.
    See attachment:
I have also tried Disk Warrior but it only sees the drive in the hardware section and again says that the drive appears to be functioning normally.
Is there any way of fixing this or will I need to re format. I will lose a fairly important project if this is the case.
    Many thanks
    Sam

Your LaCie Little Big Drive contains two 1 TB hard drives configured as a Raid 0 striped volume. I believe Raid 0 is the “as shipped” setup. It improves disk performance by splitting the data stream such that each drive only has to process half of the data.
The downside of a Raid 0 setup is that all data will be lost if either of the drives fail. Unfortunately, that appears to be your situation as the Disk Utility screen shot shows that hard drive disk 1s2 has failed. You haven’t found any obvious problems in the troubleshooting you’ve done, so your best bet would probably be to contact LaCie and ask for their help before attempting to reformat the drive. As you know, reformatting will eliminate any possibilty of recovering your important project.
I use a similar LaCie Thunderbolt drive configured as Raid 0 on my iMac. FCPX performance, especially playback, is far superior to my USB 2.0 external drives and somewhat better than my FW800 drive. I copy clips I’m using to the LaCie drive and keep the originals on a separate external drive. I believe this is now referred to as a “managed” library in FCPX 10.1 which, in my opinion, greatly simplifies backup and protection of one’s work.
Good luck and please let us know if you are able to find a solution.

  • MBP w/ 2 LaCie 320GB Big Disk Extreme d2 Firewire reset

I have a 15" MBP 1.83 with 2GB RAM and 10.4.6. Connected to this are 2 LaCie FW400/800 320GB d2 Big Disk Extreme drives. A FW400-FW400 cable connects the first one to the MBP and the drives are connected to each other with a FW800-FW800 cable.
When scrubbing through video on these drives, often there will be a knock sound as if the drive being read from has parked and then the video tool (VLC, QTPlayer etc.) will hang for 5-10 seconds... then all is well.
What is causing my drives to behave like this - it does not happen when they are hooked up to my ALBook PBG4.
    MBP 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme d2 320GB (x2)

Use the instructions in this article to partition the drive. You should read all of the comments before proceeding.

  • Connecting directly macbook pro to ethernet big disk...

I was wondering if i could connect directly my macbook pro to the ethernet plug of ethernet big disk with ethernet cable. I have used the lacie connected to netgear router but the big disk showed that it was connected at 100mbits/s. When I tried to take same cable and plug it in macbook pro and fiddle around wth advanced ethernet option, the settings always came back to previous ones. Why? Thank you for looking at this tread and hope i will enjoy super fast transfer rates because it is painfully slow at 100mbits/s. Funny how firewire 800 makes such a difference. Thanks.
    David

  • Fusion Drive vs. Little Big Disc for LR 4

Help me understand which would be better for my workflow, just sticking with the Fusion Drive, or employing the LaCie Little Big Disk.
I shoot around 40 weddings a year, each wedding is around 30GB.
I keep one wedding on my Mac at a time, via LR4. That wedding will stay there until it's finished. But on Saturdays, when I shoot a new wedding, that new wedding temporarily comes into LR for culling and a sneak peek. When I finish the sneak peek for my bride, I save the XMP files and then remove the new wedding from Lightroom.
My plan is to keep my main wedding on the Fusion Drive in Lightroom, and at 30GB, I assume the whole experience will be blazing fast, since the Fusion Drive is offering 400MB/S +
But my question is this : should I keep my other unedited weddings on a LaCie Little Big Disk? Or on the 5400RPM HDD inside the iMac? The LaCie offers read/write times around 200MB/S via Thunderbolt. But apparently that's only true for sequential transfers. Random access is more like 1.5MB/S. From what I understand, this is true of all HDD Raids. If you want fast random reads you simply cannot use an HDD.

I currently have a 27" iMac with 16GB RAM and that is plenty for the work I do. I edit short films (any where between 5 and 45 minutes, music videos, and documentaries (~5-60 minutes). Most of the media is 1080p.
You will be fine for the work you are doing. Just make sure you have at least a 7200 RPM external drive to store your media then some where to back up your media/project. (do not edit with out backups!!)

  • Using a 160GB Disk with Solaris 8

    Hello all:
I am using an Ultra5 system with OBP 3.25.3, Solaris 8 [10/01]. I have a 160GB Seagate ST3160812A disk drive that I am trying to use as a second drive (primary slave).
I have installed the drive on the primary channel as a slave and performed boot -r. The /dev and /devices directories correctly setup device links (c0t1d0) for the drive.
Assuming all was good I tried to create a new file system on slice 0 with "newfs /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0". This responded with
    /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0: I/O error
I then used the "format" command to see what was going on. I can see the drive in the 'format' command:
    #format
    AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS
    0. c0t0d0 <ST320420A cyl 39533 alt 2 hd 16 sec 63>...
    1. c0t1d0 <ST3160812A cyl 255 alt 2 hd 16 sec 255>...
    Specify disk (enter...) : 1
    selecting c0t1d0
(disk formatted, no defect list found)
    format> quit
As can be seen the 160GB drive has parameters that are all wrong for this size disk. The #format->verify command output for slice 2 (backup) shows the following:
    ascii name = <ST3160812A cyl 255 alt 2 hd 16 sec 255>
    pcyl = 257
    ncyl = 255
    acyl = 2
    nhead = 16
    nsect = 255
Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    0 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    1 :: :: ::
    2 backup wu 0 - 254 508.01MB (255/0/0) 1040400
    3 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
    7 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
I recalled that at boot-up the system showed a 'wrong magic number' message on the new drive. I tried to re-label the drive (format->label). The 'magic number' message went away on the next reboot but the 'format->verify' still showed the same thing.
I have tried several approaches to fix this:
    1. I have read several posts and on-line texts that indicate the 137GB limit associated with LBA addressing for the Ultra5 IDE controllers. I have also read the post "How can I use my 160G Disk?"
which provided great information and described using the "format" command to configure the disk with 65535 cylinders.
When I use the "format->type" command I get the following:
    #format
    format> type
    AVAILABLE DRIVE TYPES:
    0. ST320420A
    1. ST3160812A
    2. other
According to the "How can I use..." post, I select [2] other and set parameters. When I get to the first parameter to set the cylinders to 65535 I get the following:
Enter number of data cylinders: 65535
    '65535' is out of range
    a. Using the #format->type {other} function to change the # of cylinders is not accepted by the OS. In fact any value over 32000 cylinders is rejected by the command.
    b. Just in case I also tried using the [1] disk type. I get the message:
"disk formatted, no defect list found"
So the suggestion in this post did not work in my case.
    2. Next I tried referring to the post "Sun Ultra 5 Hard Drive"
which suggested using the dd command to 'nuke' the disk label and re-label with format. So using the command:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s2 bs1b count =16
the command is processed properly but when I perform "format->verify"
the label is unchanged even after I re-execute the "format->label" command. Rebooting the system did not change it either.
    3. I also attempted to use the 'format->part->modify' command to change the partition. When the command gets to the 'Free Hog Partition[6]" prompt I get a 'warning: no space available from Free Hog partition" message.
    4. I also tried using the 'format->part' command to directly modify the specific '2' partition from the partition menu.
    format>part
    partition> 2
Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
    2 backup wu 0 - 254 508.01MB (255/0/0) 1040400
    Enter partition id tag[backup]; <return>
Enter partition permission flags [wu]: <return>
Enter new starting cylinder cyl[0]: <return>
    Enter partition size [1040400b, 255c, 508.01mb, 0.50gb]: 100g
    '100.00gb is out of range'
    ^D
For some reason even this command limits the partition size.
    5. My last ditch attempt was to use fdisk -S <geom_file> to set the label geometry with the following parameters in the file:
    pcyl: 65535
    ncyl: 65535
    acyl: 2
    bcyl: 0
    nheads: 16
    nsectors: 255
    secsize: 512
When I run this command the command core dumps.
I'm somewhat lost as to what is preventing me from even using the suggestions others have found useful.
Has anyone successfully used a 160GB Seagate (ST3160812A or other 160GB model) drive with the following?
(as defined by #showrev and #prtconf)
    system: Ultra5
OS: Solaris 8 [10.01 assumed based on kernel date]
    Kernel: SunOS 5.8 Generic 108528-13 December 2001
    OBP 3.25.3 2000/06/29 14:12
    kernel architecture: sun4u
My hardware guy has tried numerous times to get a 120GB drive (which some posts indicated should work without any problems) but they are very hard to find. If I can get the 160GB drive to work (even with 137GB) I'll be happy.
    Thanks for any information.
    elbowz

Your version of the OBP as well as the Solaris kernel are not the most up-to-date. If the system is stable without the new disk I would upgrade the OBP to the last version (3.31). It may also be worthwhile to patch the kernel with the recommended cluster patches (if you have enough disk space).

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

  • Disk Warrior and a Lacie little big drive

    Hi
I have a 5 month old Lacie little big drive which I use for back ups etc. Yesterday I plugged it in and got the message ' The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer'
I have tried to see what the problem is through Disk Warrior. DW takes a couple of hours rebuilding the directory structure and mounts the drive.
The problem I have I cannot do anything with the data/drive as it is locked. I have followed the advice in the DW manual and cannot find how to unlock the drive through DU? HELP!

At the end of the DW process, does DW permit you to review the rebuilt directory structure before committing? If so, DW will mount the disk for you to review. At that point, you should have read access to the disk as if it was a regular local volume.
If you cannot figure out how to fix the problem, you can use that feature to copy off your data. If you have enough room on another disk, you can even make a disk image of the "for review" disk using Disk Utility. After making sure the disk image mounts, you can reformat the drive and restore from the disk image.
I did that once when directory damage was too severe for DW to fix completely. However, it let me use that review feature to get most of my data back.

  • Icon and use of LaCie Big Disk+ no longer

I purchased a LaCie 1 TB big disk+ external drive. Worked great out of the box. Large enough that I unloaded all of my other external drives onto it. Now, it (the icon) no longer appears on the desktop, allowing me access. The profiler states that it's recognized. I'm using my firewire 800 port which works fine with other drives, so that's not the problem. I also tried connecting it using the firewire 400 port. No luck. I've rebooted numerous times, with and without the drive plugged in. I've turned it on and off, disconnected the power temporarily, disconnected and reconnected, tried reloading the drivers, but get the message they're up to date and fine. Help!

Often LaCie drives will have power supply brick issues that are difficult to troubleshoot as the blue light comes on and the disk spins but nobody is home.
If the drive is under warranty LaCie will replace the brick no charge.
As an aside, you still need to backup the data that is on this drive otherwise you stand a chance of losing all of your data should the drive fail.
    Luck-
