Using Layers in a PDF using Preview or PDF Pen

I am seeking advice on how to handle superimposing one PDF on top of another PDF. (As we did in the old days, with tracing paper and a copying machine.)
These PDFs are drawings. One PDF is coming from one person the other PDF is coming from someone else. We want to be able to merge these two PDFs into one file and we need to be able to position the drawings on top of one another precisely.
That way, when one person changes there PDF we can re-merge with the other persons original PDF, Creating a new document that reflects the changes.
All of this is very simple when using a CAD program. But I must deal with PDFs.
I have preview and PDF Pen as my present software tools. I am open to purchasing something else.

We took the original file via an email attachment, and used PrimoPDF to create a new file.  It is in this new file that we cannot use the word search features.  The Reader version is 8.1.4.
I also tried this on my PC using Reader version 7.0.8, and the search works fine.  It can't be a newer version that's causing the problem, could it?

  • How Do You Annotate a Graphic Such as your Signature in PDF Using Preview?

Hi. I'm filling out a form that needs a signature. How do you annotate your signature (as a graphic perhaps?) to the PDF using Preview. Thanks in advance.
    Gbu.

I'm not sure you can...try dragging & dropping an image onto the PDF. If that doesn't work, you'll have to use the Text tool. That's where Zapfino comes in.

If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.

  • Used to have printable annotations to PDFs in Preview

In Preview in 10.4 when you used Add Note to a PDF, your annotation was embedded into the file and would print, though you couldn't edit it again. Now in 10.5 it seems that the Notes only leave a little bubble icon but you can't get the note itself to print. Is there a way to add printable Notes to a PDF using Preview now, or is that [very useful] feature now disabled in favor of notes that remain editable but will never print?

    5.0.1. I guess I wasn't paying attention. This is the 10.5 forum, isn't it.
This appears to be fixed in 10.6. I tried it in a couple of other PDF tools and I can't get anything other than Preview in 10.6 to print the notes. Sorry.

  • Finding text in a PDF using preview has stopped working (correctly)

Finding text in a PDF using preview has stopped working (correctly).
When I search for certain words in a PDF using preview, it correctly finds all the pages in the document with that word.  However, it no longer highlights the word being searched for.  I have looked through the various settings and cannot figure out how to turn this back on.
    Thanks.

4Shared worked, but having to register to retrieve files from there is a nuisance.
The problem is that you use special graphic state operators inside text objects which is not allowed:

Have a look at the PDF specification ISO 32000-1:2008 (e.g. at http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/acrobat/pdfs/PDF32000_2008.pdf). Table 51 shows that q, Q, and cm are special graphics state operators, and Figure 9 illustrates that these operators, therefore, are not allowed in text objects, i.e. between BT and ET.

Does this essentially mean there is no way to fix this problem on my end? It's a pity because the design and branding of my brochure will suffer if I remove transparencies and use different fonts. It also concerns me moving forward because it means the quality of print on my pieces will be significantly lower because most commercial printers use Adobe products.

The top layer is indeed the one that is visible, unless there is/are area(s) of translucency on that layer, so that you can visualize a portion of the subjacent layer.
the finished photo it doesn't look right.  It's as the layers have not flattened correctly.
Are your settings targeted to have the printer manage colors, or, to have PSE manage colors?

  • Heavy lag and "not responding" when using Preview for PDFs

    Hi there,
I have a problem with my MacBook Pro (9,1 15" Late 2012) running Mavericks 10.9.1.
Sometimes (quite often in the last weeks) Mavericks getting furious when I try to preview PDFs. This happens:
    - I get an PDF. It came from my eXactScan add, from an email adress or I downloaded it - the source doesn't matter.
    - I open the finder and want to preview the PDF with the built in preview and I get the spinning circle / load indicator. The circle runns for a long time.
    - I can use Mavericks without any problems but the Finder only shows a small thumbnail of the file I wanted to preview.
    - Now it's getting dirty: when I double click the PDF to view it with the Preview app the whole system "crashes":
the Preview app won't open (but it is shown in the dock),
my open Mail and Chrome wont react any more or start to lagg very heavy,
    the Finder laggs very heavy
but the OS (menubar, dock, etc) responds without any problems.
If I open the "Close Apps" window the apps mentioned above are marked with "not responding".
I waited for some time but nothing gets better.
The only way to get rid of the problem is to restart the Mac which works without any problems.
    That's it.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Does acrobat has any option to read pdf content objects(stamps, layers, images etc) without using pl

Does acrobat has any option to read pdf content objects(stamps, layers, images etc) without using plug-in in c#.net ?
My requirement is read a pdf file and extract all the page objects(stampls, layers and images) along with its coordinates. Is it possible to get without using plug-ins in c#.net ?
    Please hlep me.

    These are very different things.
JavaScript has some access to layers (called OCG). Layers are just names and have no coordinates to retrieve.
Stamps may be annotations; there is some minimal access to these too I think. It may be hard to identify what is, and is not, a stamp even with a plug-in.
Images are part of the actual page contents, and are only accessible to plug-ins.

  • Preview glitch when searching for words on page and when using text tools to write comments/notes on .pdf slides, why?

When using Preview to access my class notes as .pdf files, I have encountered extremely frustrating glitches when trying to search for specific words or phrases within the .pdf files and when trying to use 'text tools' to write notes on the .pdf slides.  Preview did not behave in this manor with Mountain Lion OS.  This seems to correlate with my recent upgrade to Mavericks OS.
When using the search function you should be able to type in any number of letters or words and press enter to continually cycle through the highlighted findings that match what you have typed in.  Instead it now, typically, stops tracking what I type in after about 3-4 letters and the yellow highlight turns grey.  Once it does this if you try to press enter to cycle through what it has found it no longer cycles.  It never did this in Mountain Lion using the very same .pdf files I had previously used in the old OS, and it does this despite there being multiple matches for what I am searching.
When clicking 'show edit tool bar' button and then 'text tools' button to be able to free text notes on the .pdf file I have to exit out of the 'text tools' mode to be able to advance to the next page.  This is extremely inconveneint and, again, Preview did not do this in Mountain Lion.
These are my two major complaints about Preview that I have discovered so far in my short time using it with the new Mavericks OS.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

I have this issue too and was pleased to find this thread.  Did either of you find the source of the problem or how to fix it?
I've tried using Wondershare PDF Editor as well and wondered that had messed some settings up.  Have either of you used that?
If so, how would I revert to a clean version of Preview?
Hope we can get this sorted.

  • Used to be able to create a multipage PDF in Preview

What magic wand do I need to take 3 JPEGS and put them into a Preview document and save it as a single PDF with 3 pages? This used to be real easy in Preview but now I don't have a clue how to do it.
    Thanks!
    Scot

    From Preview Help:
Move a page from one PDF document to another
    Open both PDF documents.
For each document window, click the Thumbnails or Contact Sheet button, in the View control in the toolbar.
Drag each page’s thumbnail image from its original document to the other document.A rectangle encloses the other document’s thumbnails when you drag over them. If you don’t see a rectangle, the pages won’t be included in the PDF file, but they do appear in the other document’s window.
The page remains in the original document and is copied to the other document.
I didn't try the procedure, so I hope it works for you.

  • Combine PDFs using Preview in Mountain Lion (other threads read)

I have reviewed several threads about combining PDFs in Mountain Lion.  I will ultimately learn Automator but for now, I have a relatively simple question:
    1) I open multiple PDFs in Preview, one window per PDF
    2) I drag thumbnail pages from documents 2 through n onto document 1 so that it makes one long document.  ie. one unbroken string of pages and not sections within a PDF
Question:  How do I save this combined document without deleting or affecting the first document?
Duplicate causes one of the uncombined documents to pop up with the filename highlighted.  I don't see how to give the combined document a new filename for saning
Rename gives me a file of the three combined documents but the first document disappears
Save overwrites the first document with the combined document
I must be missing something simple.  I recognize that the lack of "Save As" is a sensitive issue but ultimately, that's what I want to do:  Save the combined document with its own filename and have the individual documents intact.

    ncasey88 and Old Toad:
Thank you for your quick responses.  Unfortunately, with both methods, the first PDF gets updated.
e.g. Files are 1.pdf, 2.pdf, 3.pdf, each is one page long, and I open each in its own Preview window.  I drop thumbnails of 2.pdf and 3.pdf onto the thumbnail area of 1.pdf.  I export or print into a file called 123.pdf
Result:  1.pdf and 123.pdf have the same information (all three files).  2.pdf and 3.pdf are unchanged but 1.pdf is three pages long.

  • Why is the scan size of our epson 15Mb for PDF using image capture?

    Hi All-
This has been plaguing us since Snow Leopard when we lost the Epson Scanner tool from Epson to Image Capture scanning using our Epson 835 Artisan.
PDF sizes are ridiculous using Image Capture.
For example, 3 pages of text using Image Capture =
         15Mb
Using the same printer, same 3 pages and the builtin Epson Scanner (from the printer panel) and a USB stick =
         1.2Mb
This has been happening since the SL upgrade (as mentioned) but I had hoped that Epson/Apple could get their act together on the Epson drivers for ML.  Seems not to be the case.  It is kind of a drag to have a Network available Scanner only to have the built in software be a bum steer.  Not only that, but no relief from Epson since their Scanner program (as bad as it was UI wise, but at least you got a mail-able document) has been discontinued...
    Any ideas?
    jp

This doesn't answer the question but it is a workaround.
How is the quality if you do this:
Open the PDF in Apple Preview
    Choose File/Export
In Export, choose PDF format with the Quartz Filter option "Reduce File Size"
If it's ugly, there's a way to adjust the compression settings by using Apple ColorSync Utility to make a modified copy of the Reduce File Size filter with different settings. By playing with this I was able to start with a 7.1MB PDF scan from Image Capture, and export variations based on different Reduce File Size settings:
5.3MB (JPEG Max) - looks great
188KB (JPEG Min) - looks good as the 5.3 MB copy actually
40K (Automatic) - too blurry to be usable
If you were to perfect your own compression filter you could just export each PDF through Preview after scanning it, or presumably you could build some kind of drag-and-drop conversion utility in Automator although I don't know anything about Automator.
It's a workaround because I could not determine a way to apply a Quartz filter from Image Capture itself when saving a PDF.

  • Word 2010x64 to PDF using Acrobat Pro XI: Print shows box with ? inside.

    System: Windows 7 SP1 X64
    Adobe: Acrobat XI Pro
    Office: Office 2010 x64
On multiple systems, I creating a document with standard text and font and then saved as or printed as a PDF. This creates a normal PDF with no visable issues. Problem arrises when printing the newly created PDF. All PDFs converted from Word print with question marks inside squares. There is no symbols evident on the Word document, created PDF or in print preview. All formatting Markups have been disabled in Word as well. Any ideas as to a work around or fix? See below images for example.
Word Document: Scan of Printed PDF:

We are having exactly the same issue as described above.
    Did this ever get answered?
    We are using:
    Acrobat 11.0.3
    Word 2010 (V 14.0.7015.1000 32-bit)
MS Office Home and Business 2010 SP2
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit
The problem seems to occur only when, in Word, we use File - Print - Printer Adobe PDF, email the resulting PDF file to another office, and then printout on a Toshiba Studio 2330c printer.
If we print the file locally to a Toshiba Studio 2550c printer then it prints ok.
It also prints ok if we, in Word we use the Acrobat tab, click Create PDF, email the resulting PDF file to another office, and then printout on the same Toshiba Studio 2330c printer.
    Any ideas?

  • Scanning/Printing Documents to PDF using Image Capture

I am trying to scan a document (8.5 x 11) using image capture and then email it so that the recipient can read and print out an identical copy.  Even though I can successfully scan the document as a PDF using Image Capture, the document visually appears MUCH larger when the recipient receives and tries to print it.  The resulting printed copy shows only a fraction of the total text, but blown up.
I have Image Capture configured as follows:
    Scan Mode:  Flat Bed
    Document:  Text
    Bit Depth:  1
    Resolution:  300
    Source Size:  8.50 x 11.00
    Scaling:  100%
    New Size:  8.50 x 11.00 ;
    Format:  PDF
When I view a document scanned using the above settings in Preview, it looks fine.  The only problem is when I view it in Print Preview and/or print it.  Again, it is "blown up".  Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong and how to fix it???  Thanks.

Try with a resolution of 75 or 150.
Also when printing there are options to "fit to 1 page". The recipient should do that.
