Using legacy hardware with my Intel iMac -- HP Scanjet 6100c

I've found myself the owner of a gently used HP Scanjet 6100c. This is a 7-8 year old scanner, but it was a top-flight model back then. I suspect it's still as good or better than many consumer-grade scanners I might buy new. I'm looking forward to setting it up.
You can probably guess what comes next: it's got a SCSI interface. There's a 25-pin connector and a big, fat SCSI-2 connector. There's also a round, nickel-sized port labeled "ADF/ACC." No clue what that does.
So, the question...is there a way for me to hook this beastie up to my iMac? Or will I be left with no option but connecting it to my lonely Ubuntu box in the basement?

Without a SCSI card there's really no way to connect the scanner to the Mac. It would be easier and cheaper to get a new USB-based scanner. You would also need software to use the scanner that's compatible with Intel Macs. This could also prove a problem given the scanner's age.
BTW, you'll need driver software for the Linux machine as well in order to use the scanner.

  • What usb keyboards are compatible with the Intel iMac

Please can someone tell me what USB Apple Keybouards are compatable with the intel Imac
    howard

Some PC keyboards may not work with the Mac. Especially, specialty gaming keyboards will not work with Macs and OS X.  Some PC keyboards are designed to specifically work with newer versions of Windows at that's it!
They may not even work as a basic keyboard, but not entirely sure.
I know for a fact specialty gaming keyboards do not work at all on a Mac because there have been posts here from gamers who tried to use special gaming keyboards and mice and they would not function on a Mac.
If you know anyone with a Mac, ask them if they have a spare Mac keyboard you can try before buying.
    Good Luck!

  • WoW Freezing with new intel iMac

Posted this in the wrong forum so re-posting here.
I play World of Warcraft and I recently upgraded to a new 17" iMac. Here are the specs -
    17" iMac Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz
    2GB RAM (Apple installed)
    ATI Radeon X1600 128 VRAM
    Mac OS 10.4.9
Now I used to have a 17" intel mac 1.8GHz model and it NEVER had any problems playing WoW but this new machine will constanly freeze solid at random times while I'm playing. I cannot switch to another window, bring up the dock, or anything else. I have to hold in the power button to shut it down.
I ran Apple Hardware Test extended and it found no problems. The RAM is stock Apple ram. I dont have any 3rd party peripherals connected. I reinstalled WoW and even archive installed to 10.4.8. Disk utility reports no problems.
So after trying all of this I broke down and purchased WinXP and installed it via bootcamp and I've been able to play WoW with ZERO lockups while booted to WinXP. There was one single time where the game kicked me back to the desktop and I got the following error message "VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator or it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands". WoW was still active and on my taskbar and I was able to click it and continue playing without any problems.
I've been back and forth with WoW tech support and they claim that its probably an issue with the video card. The only time I have problems is when I'm playing WoW. Everything else works fine.
Is there anyone out there that can help me narrow down the issue? I installed the developer tools and I'm willing to try Shark and Spin Control to help diagnose this problem I just need a little guidance.
The lockups are random and as far as I can tell when it happens the sound continues on as normal. All of my graphics freeze but my mouse cursor still works. If I'm playing in windowed mode the cursor still works but I am unable to click WoW or any other windows or the dock. Force quit menu does not come up.
    Help!

While I don't have an answer for your specific problem, I can say I have the same video card and WoW runs very well here without any problems (less RAM, too). I'm finding it hard to believe it's the video card when you say your XP install runs without glitches.
I'm curious if you've tried playing other 3D games on OS X without experiencing similar problems. Warcraft 3, Unreal Tournament 2004, anything.

  • Problem with networking HP Laserjet 1100 with Leopard with new Intel iMac

I have an HP Laserjet 1100 that I have used with my old iMac running Panther. I had used the HPIJS drivers in the past with the HP Laserjet 5 driver selected. It worked flawlessly. I use IPP to connect to the printer via a printer server.
I have purchased a new iMac which is Intel based and runs Leopard. I am having a lot of trouble getting this printer to work with it. I went to the website referenced above and installed Ghostscript, Foomatic RIP and then finally HPIJS. As I add the printer, it gave me the option to select an HP Laserjet 1100 printer (from the HPIJS set). When I add the IP address, it says it is valid. When I try to print, there is no response; the job just times out. I had the same problem with the Gutenprint driver that was installed with Leopard.
Finally, I tried the HP Laserjet 6 from the HPIJS driver set. It had the word "recommended" next to it which was intriguing. It too did not work.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Steve Kirchner

I'm afraid that Ghostscript, etc. are PPC only applications and any printer plug-ins they install will not work on an Intel Mac. You should uninstall all the third-party stuff you've installed for the printer, then only use the included printer driver installed by OS X unless HP has a universal binary driver compatible with OS X and Intel Macs. You might try using LPD rather than IPP for the printer.

  • M7649 (17" Monitor) with my Intel iMac

I have an old studio display (model M7649) and I just bought a 21" referb iMac. I used the display with my 15" MBP before th video card died on it (it was from July of '07). The display simply will not respond to my iMac. Is it compatible? Here are my iMac's specs:
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)
The only thing I can think of that is different is this computer has the thunderbolt display port... Does that matter?

I have all the right adapters from the monitor (The monsterous ADC thing). I bought a mini display port to DVI to hook it up with and I think that's the right connector. Here are all the specs I found concerning video (I think)

  • Faxing with an Intel iMac

I am trying to find a low cost, practical way to send and receive faxes on my new Intel iMac. Is the Apple modem the only way to go. Has anyone who has tried this approach found that is works well? Any sugestions are appreciated.
20" Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Airport Extreme

Faxing will work on your iMac, first, if you have bought a modem (Intel iMacs don't have internal modems), second, if you use a dial-up connection (some broadband providers offer the possibility to send faxes even with a DSL line, at least here in Italy).
There are two more solutions I know: a cheaper one PageSender, it's a shareware app that costs 29 $, or a professional one FAXstf Pro for 90$.

  • Help with 2005 Intel iMac

Hey everyone, i have an old 2005 Intel iMac that i barely use nowadays. I already bought new macs since then and my last one was a new macbook. I want/need to install windows but dont want to do it on a laptop cause i dont want to take too much diskspace. I thought of installing it on my iMac which i did already with the BootCamp Beta that was realeased once but has ran out now. So I tried installing Snowleopard on the iMac with the Install Discs of the macbook. At first it seems to be running fine but when the computer boots snow leopard and the typical wallpaper shows up, i get a message that it cant be installed. Is that because its a Macbook Install disc? Id appreciate every help, really need windows on this one
    Thanks in advance bros,
    Lovey

Well, you have to understand that I got sidetracked by the 2005 date you put in your post. You take a look at this:
That is your Mac and it wasn't introduced until September 2006 - that makes it clear that's it's an Intel.
In any case, glad to hear the install is working!

  • G4 PM will not boot after using Target Disk mode connected Intel iMac.

    Hi,
We have some new Intel iMacs and have transferred some information from our previous G4 PM (one MDD and one Quicksilver) to the new iMacs. For some reason the G4's will now not boot up and kernal panic on the gray Apple boot screen. This has happened to all the G4's we have in our office. They are running OSX 10.2.8 and the iMacs are running OSX 10.4.4. We can still mount the drives from the G4's using FireWire Target Disk mode.
I have tried zapping the PRAM etc but they still wont boot. I have also tried running the OSX 10.2 Installer disks to try and reinstall OSX on the G4's but the installer cannot see the drives?
Anyone have any idea what is wrong. Never had this problem before using the FireWire transfer.
    Thanks,
    Nick.

I had an experience with a mini mac after booting in target disk mode while connected to a blue and White G3 via Firewire. After attempting a restart, all I got was a blinking ? which usually means the startup disk or system folder can not be found.
I fixed this problem by booting using the originall install CD and then using the startup disk menu to reselect the original system disk/system folder as the startup disk. On reboot. all was good. Only took a couple of minutes.....

  • Using Aperture 3 with new (2011) iMac

Currently I have been using Aperture 3 with my MBP. My library is on an external drive. When I bought my iMac, I hooked up my drive to that machine and then opened Aperture and I got a message that popped up saying something like my library was 32bit and the iMac is 64bit and I would have to convert my entire library over to be able to use AP3 on my iMac. Does this sound right. I remember it was something along those lines and I ended up not converting all my files and still use my MBP instead.

How is your workflow set up? How are you moving the Aperture Library around? What OS X and what Aperture versions?
After backup to an independent drive (stuff happens...) make sure all apps and the OS are current. Also read this regarding

  • Sleep Issues with 20" Intel iMac

I am having trouble with the iMac not "waking up" from sleep mode. In fact, it's not a full sleep. I have the machine set to "never" go to sleep. I do have the screen set to go dark after 30 minutes of inactivity. I also have the "turn hard drives off when possible" NOT checked. So the machine is supposed to never sleep, just the display. After 30 minutes the screen does go dark and I can wake it successfully. However, if the screen goes dark and is left off for several hours, like over night, then it will not wake up no matter what. Requires a hard re-boot. I have tried to reset whatever chip it is by unplugging the machine completely, etc, and that did not seem to help. I have no new software installed other than what came pre-installed on the mac. Any thoughts? It is frustrating that I can't leave the machine on.
    20" Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    hey!
have you applied the firmware update to your imac?
i like to do my own OS installs with new machines, this may be a bit drastic for your problem, but it would be something i would consider, just to have the operating system done by myself. are there applications you launched/have open when this happens?
you could also check in =>your drive=>library=>start up items and see what if anything is there...[move it out[but don't toss], reboot and check if your better off]
also go to system preferences=>accounts=>log in items and see what is enabled there. if anything is there, enabled, unclick it, re start and again verify if it 'was the culprit'... check back here, if those things are tried with/without success...

  • Using CAN hardware with 2 VI

I want to use my CAN hardware with 2 VI. Each VI will send and recieve CAN frames to CAN network. I must run once Cconfig and Copen VIs and  use Copen outs (ObjHandle out and Error out) in this 2 VI. How is Data communication among 2 VI?

Well, only one reference to the device can be opened at once, so each VI will need to use this reference.  Calling read/write from 2 different VIs using the same handle/reference may not be very good.
I would suggest building a lower layer VI that handles the CAN communication.  For example, if you read temperature using ID 1 for uC 1 and ID 2 for uC2, your lower level VI can handle the CAN communication and just set 2 global variables temp1 and temp2.  A higher level VI could just read the global variable temp1 and ignore temp2 (and also ignore CAN communication).  So, a lower level CAN communication VI that sets and read global variables.  Higher level VIs (controlled by users) that set and read globals.
You could also purchase another USB-CAN and connect each device to a single micro-controller...but that's more expensive and sort of defeats the purpose of having a bus...

  • Can I use PowerPC Apps on the Intel iMac?

    Hi guys!
The reason I am entering the same question on both the G5 and the Intel forum is because many of you may have moved from PowerPC to Intel and have had the same question...
Will my PowerPC Apps work in the Intel system?
I've been able to install both my Photoshop CS and Flash 8 on my new Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. They are working ok but when I open "Activity Monitor" and check the memory usage I see most of the processes are showing as Intel but the Photoshop and Flash are showing as PowerPC type.
I also note that 1GB ram is almost taken, even though I only opened the programs, didn't even open a file.
Is it ok to keep running these Apps even though they are PowerPC Apps?
    Would they harm the system?
Is there a workaround, a fix from Adobe, or will I have to buy the newest Photoshop and Flash? As Photoshop CS and Flash 8 are perfect for me... no need to buy the newest version regarding functionalities.
    Thanks for any idea!

A great response from another Mac user at the Intel forum:
    **Kenichi Watanabe**
*When you run PowerPC apps on an Intel Mac, a translator called Rosetta is used by the system. This will use more RAM and those apps will not run as fast as their equivalent Universal apps. However, unless your G5 was a Power Mac dual or quad core, an Intel iMac running a PowerPC app (using Rosetta) may be as fast or faster than the G5 running the same app natively.*
*Will my PowerPC Apps work in the Intel system?*
*So the answer is YES, most (but not all) PowerPC apps will run on Intel Macs using Rosetta. Increasing your iMac's RAM will improve performance (but that's always true).*
    *Would they harm the system?*
*NO. Rosetta is a built-in part of the system. Sort of like Classic, but better integrated and more seamless.*
*Adobe was late in making their apps Universal, but I believe they have completed the transition. The upgrades are not free, unfortunately. If your current versions run fast enough on your Intel iMac, you should keep using them.*
    Again...
    *Thanks both Kenichi and Miriam!*

  • No fan noise with new intel iMac?

My daughter's iMac G5 sounds quite loud when the fans kick in,but I haven't heard my intel iMac fans even come on. The loudest noise the thing makes is the hard drive writing occasionally. Is there any way to make sure the fans are working?
iMac 17 Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Did as you suggested and still cannot hear any fans. My first G5 unit was the same way till the logic board fried and was replaced. Now it sounds like a jet engine every time it starts to work hard. I hope this one doesn't turn out the same way. My first unit is in the shop right now for it's second logic board and a new power supply.

  • Help with my intel imac

Hi there i have an imac intel core duo 17inch 1.83ghz computer with an ATY,RadeonX1600 chipset graphics card.
I have recently purchased a hardware controller that allowes me to mix video on my computer. The hardware comes with software which runs nativly on my imac.
Here is an exerpt from the manual of my hardware controller:
    Double monitoring:
To do a proper VJ performance, it is more convenient to use video cards that support double monitors. That
way, you can project the output of the mixer to your second monitor (linked to a projection system for
example) and still access the user interface alongside the controller on the primary monitor. To set up
double monitoring within NuVJ, you first need to make sure your system is configured to work with two
independent screen outputs (and not using cloning where both adapter outlets output the same image).
Once you have set up your system, start NuVJ and go to the Preferences dialog (File > Preferences). In the
Display section select which monitor you would like to use for the full screen output. Once that is done, you
can enter full screen mode by going to Display > Toggle Fullscreen or by pressing CTRL+A (command+A on
Mac). You can also exit full screen mode by pressing CTRL+A (command+A on Mac).
What i want to know is can my computer do double monitoring, will my video card support this and how do i do it if it can?
I have recently purchased a projector that i want to use as my other display to do the double monitoring on useing it as the output 'full screen' while my computer acts as the user interface.
Can anyone help me as im at a loss for what to do? Even if it means going out to buy another sort of mac computer (have been looking at a laptop version) that will support this 'double monitoring'.
    Any help would be appreciated

With the correct Mini-DVI adapter connected to your iMac you should have a choice between mirroring or extending the desktop. I am not sure if either of these will meet the needs of your software.
    From page 57 of the User Guide that came with your Mac;
When an external monitor or TV is connected, you can either have the same image
appear on both the iMac display and the external display (known as video mirroring) or
use the external display to extend the size of the Mac OS X desktop (known as
    extended desktop mode).
You set this up in the System Prefs/Displays, where a new Arrangement pane should appear when your Mac detects you have connected an external monitor.

  • Is there a Window's Media Player download compatible with the INTEL iMacs?

I tried downloading MWP for Mac OSX and the file name was Windows Media.sitx and I couldnt do anything with that. I also tried downloading Windows Media Components for quicktime but it said it wasnt compatible with intel Macs.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    iMac G5 Intel Core Duo, 1.83GHz, 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although Microsoft no longer supports it, WMV9 for OSX works on the intel machine, running under Rosetta. That .sitx file you download can be uncompressed with the free Stuffit Expander for intel:
    http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/universalbeta.html
Or re-download the WM Player as a .bin file from MS directly:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/download/ misc/winmp_osx.xml&secid=80&ssid=8&flgnosysreq=True
Alternatively, you can download the Popwire components for intel Mac, which allow WMV files to play in native Quicktime (7.0.4 and below only) or Flip4Mac, which will do the same, although only by running your Quicktime Player in Rosetta, as F4M has not released a universal version as of yet.
