Using lightning with Midi

I now have the latest iPad and the dilemma of how to connect to my existing devices. I know I need the new VGA connector but what about midi?
I read the that the usb camera connector works as did the previous camera connection kit so that should be sorted but what exactly does the adaptor do to the USB data?
For instance if I wanted to connect a midi keyboard to my new iPad to play instruments in garageband, i now have a usb cable coming from my keyboard and a lightning connector with a usb on its end. If I use a USB coupler, the two devices are now connected...right?
Cant imagine it would ever be that easy but what exactly does the adaptor do that this 'frankenstein, method doesnt?

The wife just picked one up. if I am very careful I can probably get it out of the packaging without damage and take it back if it doesnt work.
Will report back in a short while i.e. once she arrives home!!
Apple already have a connector; the USB camera connection adaptor but its £25 and my camera connection kit with 30 pin connection is now defunct!!
There are only two wires on a USB that actually carry data and the lightning cable bundled clearly connects to a USB 2.0 socket on a PC. Logic dictates I am only joining up the two ends so it should work.
Bear in mind I need the coupler because the Korg keyboard has a Type B (square) while coupler joins two male Type A.

Req any examples of how to use a USB midi controller/keyboards with Labview TIA

    Hi,
To access the MIDI ports you will need to call the Windows SDK. To send MIDI commands is relatively easy, here is an example that shows you how to send data to a MIDI controller or keyboard.
As far as input goes, this is the hard part. There are a series of functions that you need to call to open up the device, set some buffers and and possibly a callback to get notifications on the incoming data.
Reading MIDI data will not be an easy task, your best bet will be to implement this in a DLL and call that DLL in LabVIEW, there should be some code available o the web.
= "http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/multimed/htm/_win32_multimedia_... is a link to the Windows multimedia functions that you could use for MIDI input.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
    Regards,
    Juan Carlos

  • Using MainStage with multiple MIDI inputs (two keyboards!)

    Hi Guys,
I use two keyboards for my live gigs, and am thinking about moving all my sounds over to MainStage. Most of my recording uses Native Instruments and Logic's standard AU instruments, and then I have to find similar sounds on my Korg and Kurzweil for live...
My question is... can you use MainStage with two MIDI controllers? I'd obviously want to set up the presets in MainStage so that there are different instruments being controlled by each synth.
Would love any advice on whether this can be done, and a quick pointer as to how...
    Thanks heaps in advance,
    Mike

Easily done (I'm using two USB controllers on a gig now). Just set them up in Layout mode, then be sure to select the input of choice for your specific channel strip(s) in each patch. Or of course you can set things up at the set or concert level as well.

  • Use Lightning as default calendar app in Windows 8.1

I've just got a new laptop running Windows 8.1 and I'm still trying to get to grips with it. You can set Default Apps for things like Internet, Email and Calendar (PC Settings > Search and Apps > Defaults). I use Thunderbird with Lightning as my main calendar (synced with my google calendar) and would like to make this the Windows default (presumably so that Windows can create/read events directly etc.). However, when I try to choose a default calendar, it says 'There is no installed app for this type of file or protocol'. Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do?

    Hi,
Now, you should do it directly in the J2EE applications DD application.xml by specifying "/" for the <context-root> element. In weblogic workshop this can be done by modifying the web apps properties.

  • Can't open a new tab with the + for tabs. Can open with Mid mouse button. Nightly.

When I click The + to open a new tab in Nightly, it does nothing. I can open new tabs with mid ouse button, or right click>open in new tab. Just cant open a new tab via the + button. Started 3 updates ago in nightly (3 days ago pretty much).

Are you using a 32 bit Nightly build or a 64 bit Nightly build?
The 64 bit Nightly build for Windows is only generated to test for compilation errors and doesn't undergo all the tests that other builds get, so the risk that something goes wrong can be quite high.<br />
So if you do use the 64 bit version then try the 32 bit version to see if you still have this problem.

  • How do I Fade in and out, working with Midi events?

    I'm new to logic.
How do you set certain virtual instruments(midi events) to fade in or out. I have a string arrangement written, and whenever the strings end it is very abrupt and unnatural. I want them to fade out, as opposed to just cutting like they do. I would also like to know how to fade in. Is it the same process?
Please help me out if you know how to do this.
    Thanks...

I'm not sure what you mean about fading the instrument and not the notes. I just want to fade out one note/per instrument at the end of certain passages. Care to expound?
In general, MIDI does not provide a mechanism to control the volume of individual notes.
In MIDI (and sequencer terms), a note has a note on, a note number (which key was pressed) and how hard you hit that key (velocity). Then a corresponding note off. There is nothing in a note specification that let's you control the volume of a note through it's duration.
In MIDI terms, you can use a controller MIDI message, typically #7 which is used for volume, and modify that over the time the note is playing. But this is controlling the volume of the instrument not the individual notes - the same as turning up and down the volume on the instrument. All notes that the instrument is playing are affected equally - if you are holding a chord, the entire chord will ramp in volume. You cannot just ramp the volume of one note within the chord using this method.
(The closest MIDI can get to controlling individual notes volume is with polyphonic aftertouch, but this is not often supported and is a more advanced technique - given that you are new to this I'm going to ignore it for now to avoid over-complicating things. I mention it to stop all the people chiming in with "you're so wrong Beejay you muppet you can do this with poly aftertouch don't you know anything" blah blah).
    Is that more clear?
Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you give me a step by step on opening the hyperview in the piano roll?
Open the piano roll, select View -> Hyperdraw -> Volume.
You can click/draw in it with the pencil tool to create MIDI volume (CC#7) changes.

  • Hooking keyboard up with MIDI?

    Hey,
Sorry, I am a noob at MIDI...
I have a Yahmaha E403 Keyboard. It has a MIDI USB port on the back. My friend has the same keyboard and was succesful using it on Garageband.
I went to this site where I found the latest driver for Mac:
    http://music.yamaha.com/products/downloads.html?productId=1212
I still cannot get it to connect. Even in apple system pref when I click on the Yahmaha icon, it says alert, cannot access to a driver.
I didn't have a midi usb cable, and my friend told me that the cable for your printer should work. So I took my printer cable and it fits into my keyboard fine and my mac book pro fine. Can the cable be the issue?
On my keyboard there are three settings,
    • PC mode: off
    • PC mode : PC 1
    • PC mode: PC 2
My friend said with Garageband, he got it to work with PC mode off, and then just lower the keyboard audio and then you can hear it on the computer speakers.
The only difference with him and me is I'm using a different midi usb cable, and a slightly older model mac book pro. But we do both have mac book pro's and the same keyboard so it should work?
    What could be the problem?
    Thanks
    - Mike

We are both the same OS and he isn't using rosetta.
I am running my keyboard off of batteries could that matter?
And is there a difference between a printer usb cable and a MIDI usb one? The printer one seems to fit fine, but maybe his printer cable is a different brand and just so happens to work.
I'm assuming most likely its my driver but it seems like it could be anything thats the problem.

  • How to use authid with rwservlet via WebLogic Thin Client

    1. Using J2EE Thin Client for WebLogic (WL) to submit interactive requests for Oracle Reports (App Server 10g) running on another server without SSO.
    2. After starting basic Infrastructure, we start rwserver in batch mode (no other mid-tier components are used).
    3. It appears that the cgicmd.dat file in the Thin Client conf directory on the WL server controls the DB access with the key:connect string info it has.
    4. We had been allowing the testers to come in via the web through a SunOne (iPlanet/Netscape) web server instance, which in turn connects to the WL server running the Thin Client instance.
    5. We noticed that anyone could run rwservlet to view report status with the showjobs command via a URL through the same mechanism as point #4 above, and were concerned about security of the reports - "bad".
    6. Then someone realized the showmap command could also be specified, and thus see the DB connect string (Id/pw/SID) - "worse".
I researched securing Reports, and read through the white paper, "Securing Oracle9i Reports", and although it discusses security without using SSO, all it says is "users accessing a secured instance of Oracle9iAS Reports Services will be challenged to identify themselves by the Reports Servlet, using its own authentication mechanism (as with Reports6i)", but I can find no explanation of how that works, nor how it would work with the WL Thin Client.
    Questions:
    1. How are the Id's/passwords set up under AS 10g "as with Reports6i" in this environment going through the WL Thin Client?
    2. Is there anything else that needs to be done to secure the created reports, and the connect string info (i.e. using authid with rwservlet?showjob, and not allowing the rwservlet?showmap to be executed at all)?
    TIA,
    ROC

    the JDBC Developer's Guide (11gR2)
gives an example in chapter 9 under "JDBC Thin Driver Support for Encryption and Integrity", sub- "Setting Encryption and Integrity Parameters in Java"
from Oracle SQL Devloper, without redirecting the client to use the OCI/thick driver, choose, new database connection, connection type Advanced. add the entry from the example noted above to the Custom JDBC URL form.
    for example:
    Properties prop = new Properties();
    prop.setProperty(OracleConnection.CONNECTION_PROPERTY_THIN_NET_ENCRYPTION_LEVEL,"REQUIRED");
    prop.setProperty(OracleConnection.CONNECTION_PROPERTY_THIN_NET_ENCRYPTION_TYPES,"(AES128)");
    OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource(); ods.setProperties(prop); ods.setURL(jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=xxxx)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=xxxx)(INSTANCE_NAME=xxxx))));
    Connection conn = ods.getConnection();
strange side note!, we could not get this to encrypt unless the sqlnet.ora file included the SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_SERVER=required. if this was set to default(accepted), and even though the jdbc thin client properties set to required, the network traffic was still clear text.
    good luck

  • What must I do to play a software instrument from UltimateSoundBank with MIDI in Logic Pro?

What must I do to play a software instrument from UltimateSoundBank with MIDI in Logic Pro? I can´t find it in the Logic library.
I want to use the USB Instrument I have as a software instrument in Logic Pro 9.

Everyone reading your posts here is just another MacBook Pro user. We're all volunteers, not Apple employees. No one here can speak for Apple.
In my personal opinion, buying Apple products in a country where Apple has no stores and no corporate presence is a risk that the buyer takes knowingly. I don't think it's a wise risk, and I don't recommend that anyone take it. A small percentage of the products sold anywhere are going to have problems, and it makes more sense to buy an inferior product that can at least be serviced locally than to buy a superior product that may have to be sent thousands of miles for repair if anything ever goes wrong with it.

  • Having problem with midi?

I am having problem with midi keyboard (korg pa80) I having hard time to midi to logic every time I have to either restart the logic or restart the keyboard or plug out the USB cable and put back in order to work. Plus when I created a new track doen't work with it. I have to do same as above to make it work? help please how can i refresh the midi connection with going throw steps above?

Is it the computer dropping the MIDI interface, or the computer connectin is fine adn Logic is not seeing it?
Run the Audio/MIDI Setup utility and make sure your MIDI device is present. If not, try another USB port, or don't use a hub.
Assuming the connection is solid, in Logic, option-click on File -> New and try it - if it works in that song, but not your own songs, it's a song specific issue, so check your MIDI input handling in the environment.

  • Adv. of using apache with tomcat??

can anyone pl tell me the advantages of using Apache with Tomcat in comarison to other web servers?
    Thanks

The biggest advantages are that they are open source, so you don't have to pay a huge licence fee, and they are very stable. I don't know how they compare for speed - I know Apache is lightning when it comes to serving flat pages, there are no benchmarks yet for the new Tomcat because it was only released last monday. You can run them on linux or another unix variant, so they are more likely to be secure (windows servers are horrendously open to attack) and stable.

  • How can I sync lightning with iphone calendar?

how can I sync lightning with iphone calendar? I saw online that I need to use a google calendar? I added the google calendar as they described but I have no idea where to go from here

To sync with iPhone's calendar (also called iCalendar) you need to use a cloud-based calendar. If you already have lightning, install the Google Provider addon and setup Google Calendar. If you have already done that, go to settings on your iPhone. In the Mail, Contacts, and Calendars area, add your Google account, and turn on Calendar. This will sync your Google Calendar with the iPhone.

  • Communications with MIDI Port

    Hi all,
Does anyone have experience with MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)
    and LabVIEW?
    Any pointers would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Paul

A few years ago my company designed (and sells) a MIDI-command compatible 4x2 audio mixer.
It is controlled via LabVIEW through the RS-232 port.
I asked another LabVIEW forum on the MIDI issue and I got advise to use activeX.
We found out by a user that our mixer could also be used in combination with MIDI software by using a driver (available from different companies) that sends MIDI-commands to the COMport.
