Using Lightroom and Indesign CS5

Hi,
I used in the past Indesign CS3 to create a book.  It went fairly well.  that was before I started using Lightroom, which now holds my complete catalogue, edits, etc.
I've recently proceeded to create Collections in Lightroom for three books I want to start working on.  I just downloaded Indesign CS5 trial.  I am wondering if there is Lightroom support in Indesign CS5?  I'd really want to have the ability to import photos directly from Lightroom without having to export them in a specific folder to work in Indesign.  It seems to me it would be a waste of disk space since exporting files would simply create duplicates; no to mention I'd need to re-export them every time I would create modifications to the files in Lightroom...
I think this is a feature that has been requested here and there from Indesign users in CS4?
Thanks,
Martin

The point of RAW or DNG is, as the name implies, is to create the digital equivalent of a "negative". A format where the original camera data is preserved and can be "developed" later—the development settings are not actually applied until the file is converted. The advantage of the format is obvious when you take a shot with the wrong camera settings.
There's nothing forcing you to use the digital negative workflow. You could shoot an image format like .jpeg and use LR for content management and ID's Mini Bridge panel for placing.
There isn't much point in making CMYK conversions in PS—InDesign is capable of making the same color managed conversion on export or print.

  • Using Lightroom and Aperture, will a new ATI 5770/5870 vs. GT 120 improve performance?

I have a MP (2009, 3.3 Nehalem Quad and 16GB RAM) and wanted to improve performance in APERTURE (see clock wheel processing all the time) with edits, also using Lightroom, and sometimes CS5.
Anyone with experience that can say upgrading from the GT120 would see a difference and how much approximately?
Next, do I need to buy the 5870 or can I get the 5770 to work?
I am assuming I have to remove the GT120 for the new card to fit?
    Thanks

Terrible marketing. ALL ATI 5xxx work in ALL Mac Pro models. With 10.6.5 and later.
It really should be yours to just check AMD and search out reviews that compare these to others. You didn't look at the specs of each or Barefeats? He has half a dozen benchmark tests, but the GT120 doesn't even show up or in the running on most.
From AMD 5870 shows 2x the units -
    TeraScale 2 Unified Processing Architecture
    1600 Stream Processing Units
    80 Texture Units
    128 Z/Stencil ROP Units
    32 Color ROP Units
    ATI Radeon™ HD 5870 graphics
    That should hold up well.
Some are on the fence or don't want to pay $$

Generally this should work, but of course there may be occasional compatibility issues across the different programs and their different versions.

  • Installing older software,Illustrator CS3 and Indesign CS5, on new laptop

I've had to abandon my desktop as it was beyond repair and have tried to install Illustrator CS3 and Indesign CS5 (cds) on my laptop. I get a message saying that there was a problem with licensing. I own the software and can't find anyone to speak to at Adobe. What is the next step?

  • I have Creative Suite 6 Production Premium and InDesign CS5.5 for Windows, but I need the Mac versions of these. Is it possible to swap or exchange these products?

Does Adobe allow exchanging my Windows version of CS6 Production Premium and InDesign CS5.5 for the Mac version? (The CS5.5 box is unopened, and the CS6 is in mint condition.)

You might be able to do something for the CS6 product, but as far as the CS5.5 application goes it will not qualify.  See the following:

  • Using Lightroom and iPhoto

I use Lightroom and iPhoto. I mainly use Lightroom for everything. If it's personal photos I use iPhoto but mostly Lightroom. If I want to share these and/or sync with other devices like AppleTV, iPhone, MobileMe then I have to export from Lightroom to iPhoto. That doubles up on files and hard drive space. What do others do that use Lightroom and iPhoto? I love being able to share and sync with iPhoto but it's just to much to ask of my Hard Drives.

Few people use both Lightroom and iPhoto - they both do essentially the same thing but are different and in the past iPhoto has found LR processed photos unacceptable - and they can not operate on the same physical photos - you must export photos form LR and import them into iPhoto since they both manage photos
If you want to use both you will have to have photos imported into each
Fortunately external hard drives are cheap -- iPhoto is perfectly happy having its library on an EHD

  • Adobe Illustrator and InDesign CS5 crash when trying to place images. Happens around 5+ times a day.

    Hi there
This Mac is quite new and was originally a migration (using Migration Assistant) from an older Mac.
Illustrator and InDesign in CS5 were both crashing often and most of the time it's when placing an image (in either application) – it doesn't crash each time I try to place an image, but 90% of the crashes are when placing an image.
We tried lots of things, like cleaning out the fonts, clearing font caches etc. After several months of that, we decided to wipe the Mac clean and start from scratch. It has been reformatted with a clean install of the OS and only minimal additional software added. Although quite a few fonts have been reinstalled, they all validate in Font Book.
One other thing of note is that the Adobe Updater fails to complete an update and so we have had to update each application manually from the Adobe website.
I would be so grateful someone could help shed some light on what is going on. Here's an EtreCheck report. Can also provide crash reports from the Console if useful.
    Thanks!

  • Can't place and Indesign CS5 created swf back in an Indesign CS5 file?

I hope someone can help me?  I have created an animated swf file in Indesign CS5 using the amination and timing panels, for use in an interactive PDF.  The swf has exported correctly and plays as expected in the browser.  However, when I go to select the swf to place it in my Indesign file its greyed out and unable to be selected.
I have basically tried to follow Rufus Deuchler's method to incorporate animations into a PDF http://tv.adobe.com/watch/csinsider-design/indesign-creating-interactive-pdfs-with-page-tu rn-and-flash-animations/. In the video his swf is available for selection when using the place command and everything else I have found on the web talks about importing swf's into indesign files being a standard feature in CS5 and CS5.5.
I have tried re exporting the swf by different names and to different folders; quitting Indesign and restarting it; trying to place the swf into a completely different indesign file; going through all the Indesign Preferences to see if there is an option to "turn on" swf import and I have even tried following Rufus's steps and export options exactly when creating the swf.  Nothing has worked.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have screen shots and the swf I am trying to import which I can email if that would help anyone ease my growing frustration.
    Cheers
    Pete

    Hi John,
Thanks for the extra information.  I did as you suggested and downloaded Onyx and rebuilt the launch services database. But only after finding out that my harddrive was corrupted to some extent after both Onyx and Disk Utility found a problem when I verified my Hard Drive.  Anyway I sorted that out, executed the rebuild launch services database via Onyx and unfortunately still no luck with with being able to place a swf in my indesign file.  Very frustrating.
The only other thing I thought I would mention is that upon verifying the disk with Onyx it initially presented me with a "Choose Application" dialog box with the question "Where is ARM?" at the top.  I didn't know what this meant and I couldn't find any information on the web so I chose "cancel" and then Onyx went through the verification process without a problem and lauched the Onyx application proper.  I'm clutching at straws now but I was wondering if not selecting an application could have undermined the rebuilding of the LS datatbase?
Again, and help you or anyone else can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • ILLUSTRATOR CS5 AND INDESIGN CS5

    Well...
I've been looking the new CS5 programs. It's time to change. Now, Illustrator artboards (pages) can be rearranged and named. You can paste a objet in multiple artboards and they preserve their relative location in the artboards too (imagine this feature with titles, ornaments in a long document, page numbers, etc.)
You can draw INSIDE and object. It has perspective grid (exactly like FreeHand)…
And at last, but no at least, InDesign CS5 has pages with multiple sizes.
    What do you think?

First off, I am a staunch advocate of FreeHand and want to see it's future continue, as a majority of users here do. So to see Illustrator CS5 merge so many cool features from FreeHand is a good thing!  AI's new perspective grid, multi-sized/arranged pages, text improvements for long docs, better paste inside, etc. are all from FreeHand MX and it takes Illustrator closer to parity with it.  If I had the system requirements to run this version, I would definitely upgrade as I see no conflict with having both Illustrator and FreeHand on my system.
I do have trouble with the comment, "It's time to change." I think the mistake many FreeHand (and Illustrator) users make is that one is better than the other and thus only one should exist. Even Adobe thinks this. In fact, Illustrator has strengths in its widespread feature set (much like Photoshop) whereas FreeHand has it's strength in it's speed, lightweight and intuitive interface. If I want to touch up a JPEG, do I open up Photoshop or a quick application like Preview or Cocopad? If I want to draw quick vector elements, do I open up Illustrator or the speedier FreeHand? If I am on a time limit, I know which application is best just as I know which I'd use to create 3D extrusion and realistic effects. Do you see why both serve an important  purpose?
The new Illustrator CS5 is highly worthy and Sr. Mgr. David Macy deserves kudos for bringing more FreeHand features into it. He's doing the right thing. But crushing FreeHand in order to boost AI's prominance is a very poor management choice. Adobe is now crying foul over Flash being disregarded by Apple, which is the ultimate irony to the same treatment they have foisted on FreeHand, GoLive and even PageMaker users. Adobe management can't point fingers when they have been doing the same thing to their user base.
Adobe, if you're reading this, release FreeHand to open-source or sell it off (once you've gotten what you want from it). But don't sit on it all these years and expect us to feel sorry that Flash isn't being given a fair shake! You are just playing a victim to your own policies.

  • Windows 7 crashes when using Lightroom and Photoshop

I am trying to determine the cause of random crashes (bsod) when I run Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5 (either individually or both at the same time) on my Windows 7 64-bit PC.  I'm begining to think the crashes might be related to interactions between LR4, CS5, and Windows 7 Services.  Does anyone know of a list of Windows 7 64-bit Services that are used by LR4 and CS5?

Applications can't cause BSOD's. Crash, yes, but not BSOD. The real cause is usually faulty or incompatible hardware (most likely RAM), or buggy drivers (most likely video card).
Photoshop puts a lot of stress on your computer, so any latent problems are likely to turn up. Lightroom I believe less so; but still it can push the wrong buttons.
I'd start by downloading an updated video driver, and next test RAM by removing or replacing one stick at a time.

  • HELP: just upgraded to Mac OS 10.7.3 and InDesign CS5.5 keeps crushing upon opening

Hi - Indesign CS5.5 stopped working after I upgraded to mac OS 10.7.3. It was working fine before the upgrade... It keeps crushing during the launch. Photoshop seems to work fine but the same thing happens when I try to open Illustrator. I reinstalled CS 5.5 suite but to no avail.
Here are some info from the crash report:
    Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'launch path not accessible'
*** Call stack at first throw:
I don't know what this means since I'm not that tech savvy... Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    M

I thought I deleted it by using app zapper but could it be that some parts didnt' get deleted? idk...
Any time you choose to use a third-party software removal tool instead of the vendor's own process, you run a risk of it failing in subtle and annoying ways. Generally speaking, you're better off without tools like this.

  • Problem with CS3 InCopy text files and InDesign CS5

I have a large annual magazine that I am developing. There is one section that doesn't change much from year to year and I was hoping to grandfather in the InCopy text files from last year's edition. I've successfully used this strategy the past few years without issue. However, now when I try to check out those text files from last year, I receive the following message "This story needs to be coverted to "InCopy Document" format in order to edit it."
I am running both InDesign CS5 and InCopy CS5 in SL 10.6.4. The previous year's magazine document was in CS3 InDesign format and the text files were in InCopy CS3. Is there some sort of compatibility issue? Is there a specific method for converting them so I can check them out in InDesign? I haven't attempted to check them out in InCopy CS5 yet but I will try that next. But I really need the ability to check out the content via InDesign too.
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert

AFAIK, you're going to actually need to open the INCX files in InCopy and then resave them as ICML file. You can then relink them all in InDesign.
Other choice is killing the InCopy links and then relinking everything.
Best practice would be to finish any job started in CS3 with CS3 and then move to CS5 with new projects.
