Using Lightroom as RAW Converter without Importing Images

Hi-
I have a question that I can't find the answer to anywhere. i have images on my desktop that I'd like to convert from RAW to JPEG withOUT having to import them into LR.
What I mean is that I'd like to be able to open a folder, right click on an image, and convert it from RAW to JPEG in the folder. Is this possible? If it matters, I have Windows 7,
Thank you,
Kelly

Kelly, in order for Lightroom to see the raw file you have to import it. It's not a big deal, just a simple step in the process. Also realize that if you remove the imported raw files after development and exporting the jpegs, you will lose all the settings the images had and will have to start from scratch should you want to make adjustments later, unless you save the settings to XMP files.

i am using lightroom 4 and i cant import my photos because their paths contains blackslashes (499)
can yotell me what is this and why its doing this and how i can fix it

Does the path contain a backslash. If so, change it.   It would help to show the path you are trying to import from.  You could try changing the file handling setting in Preferences to the second setting where backslash is considered illegal and is replaced.  Its probably better to just not use these characters anyway.

  • Lightroom 3 Raw Files not Importing

I have a Nikon d3200 and I am using Lightroom 3. My raw files are not importing. Do I need some sort of plugin? Im not sure where to find the plugin on Adobes site...ugh!!! #frustrated

You would need the FREE Adobe DNG Converter (version 7.1 or later) to convert your D3200 raw photos to DNG.  The DNGs will import into Lightroom.

  • Converting 180 imported images in AE CC to image sequences that reside in same folder as stills.

I have 180 imported stills in a composition. I have corresponding image sequences that I want to convert each still to. The stills are named "x-00001.jpg", and the other parts of the image sequence are in the same directory. How do I get AE CC to make the leap to find the rest of each image sequence aside from manually using "Replace Footage" with each image to check the image sequence box?

Your workflow is flawed when you put your placeholder images and your image sequences in the same folder. Each image sequence should be in a separate folder and should be imported as an image sequence. The frame rate of the imported image sequences is set in Preferences before an image sequence is imported or changed with File>Interpret Footage.
If your placeholder is a still image and you have an image sequence in a different folder you can use the Replace Footage command and it will bring replace a still with an image sequence if you make sure to check the image sequence button before you press Open.
You can also convert your image sequences to Movies using QuickTime and easily wrap them in a .mov container. This eliminates the necessity of checking the image sequence box when replacing footage.
Writing a script to do this would require that you either pause the script to choose the folder with the image sequence or that you script every folder and the placeholder so it would be easier just to go through the composition and replace footage.

  • Using Lightroom on a Mac without duplicating photo library?

I have been using a Mac for the last couple of years but have always used Lightroom on a PC prior to this and have now installed Lightroom 5 on my Mac
Using iPhoto/Aperture and importing to the Mac all of my photos which I am used to seeing in a folder/file hierarchy are swallowed up in a library.
Is there any way for Lightroom to use this library to access my photos without importing a completely separate, duplicate library of my own photos again in a folder/file structure so Lightroom can reference it?
I do not want to maintain two libraries of the same photos on my Mac but do wish to use Lightroom as my main program.
If I am unable to do it this way round is there a way I can reimport all of my photos onto my Mac in the usual folder/file hierarchy but then allow iPhoto/Aperture/etc. to access them in this structure without duplicating all of my pictures?
    Thanks & kind regards,

Thanks again for the quick reply.
I don't want to use two different organising programs. In fact I don't really want to organise at all.
All I want to do is keep one copy of my photos on my Mac and then choose what program I want to use at any particular time.
On a PC this wouldn't be a problem as I used Lightroom, DxO Optics and Canons own software to access my own photos and do whatever I wanted to do with them.
On the Mac Apple insists on tying up my pictures in a library which is OK if you only want Apple software such as iPhoto, Aperture etc to access them but when I want to use any non-Apple software I can't seem to see my photos anywhere?
I've done a search and I see reference to making duplicate copies of my library but I do not want to maintain two duplicate copies of the same photos on my Mac.
I never had this problem on my PC.
In fact I'm getting so fed up with Apple holding my own files to ransom (or worse still not letting me get at them easily by hiding access to the filesystem and a myriad of other things) I'm thinking of going back to PC!
    Thanks & kind regards,

  • In lightroom 5 I have been importing images via a card reader. Now you can see the images on the computer but when I try to import it says that it cannot read the card any ideas how to solve?

I have been importing images via  card reader with no problem. Now all of a sudden I can see the images on the screen but when I try to import the computer says that it can not read them and quotes numbers of the images. Any idea how to solve?

Please give us the exact error message.
    Please state your operating system.
Please state the exact version of Lightroom you are using.
Please give us any other relevant details.
What does this mean: "Now all of a sudden I can see the images on the screen"? Are you looking in Lightroom or your operating system or the camera screen? Where?

  • Lightroom 5 Darkens Photos after Importing Images Used with Different Camera [NOT SHOOTING IN RAW NOR B

I seriously need help, my whole entire catalog of photos just got darkened for some reason after importing photos used with a different camera. What happened is that I imported photos taken with a different camera (Canon EOS 60D) and when I did that, it darkened all the rest of my photos (taken with Canon EOS Rebel T3). Why did this happen? This is making my photos insanely hard to edit.

If you always want Camera Neutral picture style to be applied, then open one of your images that you have imported and have changed nothing else in Lightroom.  Set the camera profile to Camera Neutral and save new camera default settings.  Then whenever you import that setting will be applied to all of your images.
If you don't always want that style, you could save a preset that applies the Camera Neutral picture style, and then you could choose to use that preset during the import process.
It is simply a matter of determining your workflow and then setting things the way you want them to work.

  • If Adobe has disabled the ability to use Lightroom 5.7 to view the images in the external harddrive, how does one view the images in the file on the external drive without bringing them back to the Lightroom Library?

Jpeg images dragged over from Photoshop are veiwable as thumbnails on the external harddrive.  However images brought over as RAW of DNG are not viewable.  Is there anyway to view these type images on the external harddrive?  It would be nice to have a glimpse of what you are bringing into Lightroom by just looking on the external harddrive as you can with the jpegs.

From the Library simply click the import button and navigate to your folder on the ehd. Choose the folder and click Add at the top of the dialog. You should see thumbnail previews in the import dialog where you can select what to import.

  • Using the Camera RAW interface for JPEG images

I realize JPEG's don't have the information level of RAW files, but does the convenience and speed of the RAW interface not make it worth using rather then going to the usual tools like Levels and Hue/Saturation? I discovered that you can open JPEG images in the RAW interface by choosing File > Open As...and selecting "Camera RAW" as the file format. Here you can not only use the RAW interface but also change the image to 16-bits. I also understand that upscaling an image from 8 to 16-bits doesn't add more information, but would working on it in the RAW interface at 16-bits not produce more subtle changes and give you more control over the outcome.
Looking forward to some intelligent feedback.

From a mathematical perspective, it would seem that using the extra information in the up-sampling interpolation calculations would be better. The question is whether or not the extra digits in the calculation would produce a difference in the image. I suspect that it would be quite image dependent. Easy enough to test, with the right kind of image, whatever that is?

  • Opening cs5 idml without importing images

We save out a CS5 Indesign doc to idml for translation. Once translated we just open the idml in InDesign and tidy up. Now when we open the document it starts importing all the images and thewn crashes when it gets to a certain image, always the same one. I have trashed the image folder but it still tries to link. How do we stop it trying to link?
We want it to open with grey boxes and then relink manually.

Actually as soon as I posted I realized it probably won't work unless you move the links so the pointers become invalid and the links go missing (or open on a different system without the links). one way to deal with that might be to package the file, then make the .idml from the packaged version, and move the links folder. It probably isn't sufficeint to rename the folder if it it remains in the same path as the file itself since ID looks in subfolders for missing links before giving up.

  • Using Lightroom 5.5:  I can sort images by edit date, but I cannot find a display of the actual time and date of the edit?

Often when working intensely on a large project which spans over days I forget to mark the start and finish time for each session.  When billing clients for time this can create problems.  I thought the perfect solution to this problem would be to sort catalog by edit time, and then by view the time stamps. I could then find the first and and last edit for a session and quickly translate to session time.  The only problem is I cannot find a place with LT displays this information.

It seems to be an oversight in LR -- the metadata field "lastEditTime" is available to plugins via the Lightroom SDK, but you can't use that field to define a custom tagset for displaying in the right-hand-side Metadata panel.
However, here's a workaround that might work for you:  In the right-hand Metadata panel, select the "EXIF and IPTC" preset, and the field Metadata Date will show the date/time of the last time LR wrote metadata back to the file. In Catalog Settings > Metadata, make sure "Automatically write changes into XMP" is checked.  This will cause LR to write develop settings or metadata changes (keywords, captions, ratings, etc.) back to the file soon after you make the changes ("soon after" is typically less than a minute).

  • Read image raw data without creating image

Is there any way to read image raw data into an array from a file but not creating an image ? I looked through ImageIO. It seems that every time an image reader is called , a bufferediamge is created or reused ?

  • Canon Eos 5D, Lightroom and RAW images

After a series of tests I carried out with my Canon camera, do you agree with these conclusions on the raw format?
Following an import in Lightroom of RAW pictures:
Loss of image styles (portrait, landscape, B&W...)
Loss of image style changes (+/- sharpness, +/- hue...)
The white balance setting is kept but can still be modified in lightroom
The temperature of color setting is kept
    > Are B&W filters (green, yellow, sepia...) kept or deleted through import?
    Thanks!

I believe we'll all agree that your comments are true. That is, Adobe ACR or Lr make no attempt to read much more into the raw data than the data itself (ie, without interpreting any setting other than the white balance).
While that is the case, Adobe has provided profiles that should very closely match the "portrait, landscape, ..." styles. Lr is also very versatile such that you can create presets that will closely match all the other in-camera styles ... and, btw, many more.

  • Using old raw converter - why?

Aperture 3.2.3 has started importing images and processing them with an old raw converter for some reason.  When I look at the image the first brick of the Adjustments tab contains a warning that the raw file was convertered using an old raw converter and giving me the option to update the processing.   This has just happened all of a sudden, and I can't find any preferences to change the processing engine to the proper converter.   Any ideas?  Thanks.

I just noticed that there's an update to 3.2.4 anf to the raw converter.  I applied those updates and the problem has gone away.  Not sure why it happened in the first place 'though.  One of those things...
