Using Lightroom on a Mac without duplicating photo library?

I have been using a Mac for the last couple of years but have always used Lightroom on a PC prior to this and have now installed Lightroom 5 on my Mac
Using iPhoto/Aperture and importing to the Mac all of my photos which I am used to seeing in a folder/file hierarchy are swallowed up in a library.
Is there any way for Lightroom to use this library to access my photos without importing a completely separate, duplicate library of my own photos again in a folder/file structure so Lightroom can reference it?
I do not want to maintain two libraries of the same photos on my Mac but do wish to use Lightroom as my main program.
If I am unable to do it this way round is there a way I can reimport all of my photos onto my Mac in the usual folder/file hierarchy but then allow iPhoto/Aperture/etc. to access them in this structure without duplicating all of my pictures?

I don't want to use two different organising programs. In fact I don't really want to organise at all.
All I want to do is keep one copy of my photos on my Mac and then choose what program I want to use at any particular time.
On a PC this wouldn't be a problem as I used Lightroom, DxO Optics and Canons own software to access my own photos and do whatever I wanted to do with them.
On the Mac Apple insists on tying up my pictures in a library which is OK if you only want Apple software such as iPhoto, Aperture etc to access them but when I want to use any non-Apple software I can't seem to see my photos anywhere?
I've done a search and I see reference to making duplicate copies of my library but I do not want to maintain two duplicate copies of the same photos on my Mac.
I never had this problem on my PC.
In fact I'm getting so fed up with Apple holding my own files to ransom (or worse still not letting me get at them easily by hiding access to the filesystem and a myriad of other things) I'm thinking of going back to PC!

Try going to Settings>iCloud and turn PhotoStream off. If that does not work then there is nothing else you can do. 4.6 kb is not worth thinking about.

Using Lightroom CC with Mac's new Photo app

I now own Lightroom CC and I have upgraded my Mac to the OS with the Photos app. So I no longer can use iPhoto or Aperture. How do I open "Photos" under the Pictures heading to pull the data for all my photos into Lightroom? I can't make a copy (as has been recommended) because I have too many photos.

The new Photos app does not work in the same way as iPhoto and can't be used to edit photos in external applications. If you have not removed iPhoto you should be able to use the built-in plug-in from LR CC. Alternatively export versions from iPhoto to the desktop or named folders in Finder. Then import the versions into LR using "Add"

Kindly try the below mentioned steps if you already have Lightroom 5 installed on your laptop.
Launch lightroom.
Click on help.
Click on Check for update.

When using JPEG-pictures directly from the camera there are no problems, so the manipulation in Lightroom seem to cause corrupt files. In iPhoto 11 the Originals folder is renamed Masters.
IPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback and report the bug.

If you are asking if you can be running the subscription software on the two machines at the same time, the answer to that is no. Per your license you can only be using one of the installations at a given time.
If you are asking if you can have the software installed and capable of being used on both machines then the answer is yes... you just cannot have both machines in use running the subscription software at the same time.

No. You can only music to your iPhone from one computer at a time. If you try to load music onto it from a 2nd computer, it will erase the current content on the iPhone and replace it with whats in the iTunes library you are connected to,

FrontRow crashes Mac Mini on Photo Library

I just purchased and set up the unit. I imported a 3000 photo collection into iPhoto by mounting a samba drive, then imported the entire share without copying the files to local disk. (Set that in the Advanced option menu on iPhotos).
Whenever I select the Photos > Library option, or even just move the cursor over the Photos > Library option in Front Row, my mac locks up. Only way to recover is a hard reboot. (I haven't figured out how to start up sshd yet, so I can't log in to see what's going on). Hopefully this is a known issue with an easy fix.
One other interesting note ... if I do not mount the samba drive on which the photos are located, Front Row "works" but no photos are actually displayed. When I say "works" I mean music plays, I can still navigate, but the screen is black.
I highly suspect Front Row doesn't play nicely with networked file systems.

Hrm ... I need to retract my earlier analysis of "crashes" to the much less serious "locks up the GUI". Top shows Front Row 's memory usage growing steadily, but nothign like a leak ... more like normal operation. The CPU time is a fraction of a percent, so no tight loops hogging CPU time and killing performace. I did a "sample" with 10 1 options, but I'm not familiar with a lot of these system calls. Looks like fairly "normal" procedural calls tho, nothing nasty:

Finally did an lsof on the process a couple of times. While the vast majority of files remain the same (looks like libs used by the app) the last file in the list kept changing each one is a file in my picture library. For example:

So, even tho iPhoto already did all this work, Front Row has to reimport all my photos just to do the three image preview on the right? Maybe there is a way to turn this scanning off? Right now the mac is totally unresponsive to mouse/keyboard/remote input, but very snappy on the command line. Load is well below 1.

Slow mac after importing photo library

Hi, I have a macbook pro 2,9ghz intel core i7, 8gb ram, 1 tb harddrive (219gb free). I recently imported my old photo library, wich is quite big and now it seems my mac is slowing down... The library was kind of messy and i had some trouble organizing it so i ran the duplicator anhiliator and it found 35 GB of duplicates wich is now in the iphoto dustbin. Howver - iphoto is riunning very slow - I wonder if it is something in the way the photos are imported - the change in speed certainly happened after the import... It was previously a Picasa photo library - dont know if that matters? Does anyone now how to handle this?

I'll try the wired connection tonight - I do have other devices that access photos/mp3's over my wireless network (eg. xbox360) that seem to have no difficulty with speed.
Do you think it would make any difference if I imported in smaller groups (maybe one folder/50 photos at a time) rather than trying to import my entire photo album at once (3000 photos). It might take a few days, but it is a process I could run in the background while I surf. Just curious if iPhoto cares - does it take the same amount of time to import 50 photos 20 times, versus 1000 photos in one shot...?

How can I download my photos without icloud photo library

I have IOS8 and I did NOT turn on iCloud Photo library as I don't want to store my photos there. When I go to download them to my PC the files have an .AAE ext and I cannot open them.

I Figured it out----- you can't upload iTunes iphotos to iCloud Photo Library from an iPhone! Can't be done. Must have a Mac to do it--- and it better not be an old one. Thanks apple!

You can't store the iPhoto library on iCloud. Photo Stream was designed as a sync service, and photos on Photo Stream are deleted after 30 days. You can use a different cloud service as Dropbox, but I recommend you to store it on an external drive

Coverflow really slow and duplicated photo library after updating

Hi!, I've been having these 2 issues stated in the titled since I updated my iPhone 4 yesterday after many "3200" errors. When I could finally pass the "Unpacking process", and just before finishing the update, I got a weird error (if I remember correctly it was something like -2 or so). I didn't pay much attention to it because my phone booted normally.
After that I configured the iOS5 pre-settings, and for my surprise, any of my apps, videos or music weren't there. I connected my device again, resynced and hopefully, the restore option popped up, and it went smooth with no errors. The first thing I noted was that some of my albums were lacking the cover art. I connected again and found that in itunes, my songs displayed the cover art correctly, but in the iphone they didn't. I replaced the missing covers and when checked the cover-flow, it was really slow! it is not fluid and freezes my device. What could it be? I think it's something to do with the cache or something...
And the other issue is more simple: after restoring, I got an extra folder called "Pictures" which contains the exact same pictures I sync from my computer (they are normally in the "Photo Library") How can I sort out my pictures?

I also noticed a bug on Iphone 4 ios 5.0.1. In Ipod application when viewed in landscape position so slow and then kicks me to the springboard(desktop). Sorry for my English, i'm Ukrainian. I hope this problem fix in next update. Thanks

Help transferring contacts from iPhone4 5.01 to Mac without duplicating contacts on either or both lists

When I connect my iPhone running 5.01 to my mac vie iTunes, and transfer contacts, it always duplicates the contacts when synching.
So if I have a single John Doe entry on both my iPhone and Mac, I now get two.
Sometimes it will make 3 or 4 copies.
I want to:
copy my contact list from my iPhone TO my Mac, and update existing entries on my mac, and add new ones that are on my iPhone and not on the Mac, and
transfer contacts from Mac to iPhone that are new to the iPhone
Basically, I have to separate contact lists that I dont want to mix or mesh entirely, and I also want to stop them from duplicating.
The User Manual does not address keeping them from duplicating.

Well, there appears to be NO way to get it to stop doing what its doing.
I have one contact list on my iPhone.
I have a different list on my MacBook pro.
When I connect to update items on my phone via iTunes, I back up the iPhone.
I did my update, and then restored from the backup. That brought back in my iPhone contact list.
However, when I go to put my apps and music, books, etc back on my phone from iTunes on my Mac, I either have to bring my contact list off my mac over and it adds entries to the iphone contact list, or I choose not to sync contacts, and it erases them altogether.
If someone has a suggestion how I can keep my original iPhone contact list on my iphone, without having itunes either wipe it or add unwanted entries from my macbook pro, I'd appreciate it!
