Using Lightroom on a Network Drive...a workaround for Mac.

I may have figured a workaround, sort of, to use images from a network drive in Lightroom.
I am using a Mac and work in a marketing office. We have an image library of several thousand photos. I did a test with a few images to try and it worked.
Take the images that you want and bring them into Lightroom. Export the catalog of images to your computer. Take that folder and save it to your networked drive. Then from the other computer you are trying to use to access the catalog, go into the networked drive and pull ONLY the catalog file out of the exported folder. Save that to your desktop. Open Lightroom and select the newly copied catalog from your desktop as your catalog to run from. It will open and say that the images are not found, and under the folder drop down on the left the folders will be listed in red. Right click on the red folder name and select the link missing file option. From there, it will allow you to navigate to your networked drive and into the Lightroom catalog folder you exported initially with the image folder there. Link to that and bam, you should be golden. I am still testing this but I am looking for input and such on if this is a viable way to work around the non-networking capablities of Lightroom. Let me know! Thanks!

Hello Adam,
I am already using this method to give a view to my photo library to my wife. I sync the lib from time to time. So, It is also working here.

John.

Can I connect a 4 TB USB drive to the airport extreme and use it as a network drive for Time Machine

Yes, if the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The USB port on the Time Capsule is under powered, so you may need use a powered USB hub with the 4 TB drive...even if it has its own power supply.

  • Use old TC as Network Drive

I am now using a 500 GB Time Capsule ("TC") with my iMac and intend to buy a new TC (1 TB) to replace the existing one.
How can I connect the old TC with the new one and use it as a network drive. Can I connect the 2 TCs using Ethernet or USB. I use Time Machine with the old TC, how can I copy the backup data from the old TC to the new one? Thanks.

Alilulu, Welcome to the discussion area!
How can I connect the old TC with the new one and use it as a network drive.
If you want to connect it wirelessly configure the old Time Capsule to join the wireless network provided by the first.
If you want to connect it via Ethernet configure the old Time Capsule to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).
Can I connect the 2 TCs using Ethernet or USB.
    Ethernet - Yes
    USB - No

  • Imac-- Upgrading elements 10 to elements 12. Did successful backup of 10.  When restore to 12 message said the disk in drive My Passport for Mac does not contain a valid backup

IIMac      doing upgrade of Elements 10 to Elementys 12.  Did full backup of 10 on my external hard drive "MY Passport".  Rec'd message backup successful.  Did restore on 12 and rec'd message "The disk in drive My Passport for Mac does not contain a valid backup".  Any help suggestions?

The funniest part of the whole situation, Apple Care explained it to me as some kind of feature. The told me how to adjust the time when my computer sleeps and recommend I don't shut it down, let it sleep and "instant wake". I would bet if you called them about your Macbook, they would suggest you just close the lid and let it sleep rather than shutting it down.
Basically shutdown and restart have a problem and the solution is to not shutdown is how they explained it to me. They kept saying buzz words like "instant on" and "fast wakeup". My computer already could sleep and wakeup fast, but now shutdown and restart don't work right. I called them 3 times about it, but since they use these buzzwords, sounds like Lion is meant for a Macbook Air or a Mac with an SSD. If you have a normal hard disk, some of the saving/versions/resume features take too long to be written to the disk on shutdown. And when you start again, it takes a long time to reload the system to it's previous point.
Even if I uncheck the box to reopen windows on next start, it reopens them anyways.
If they can't give me a better explaination or some kind of fix, I will have to go back to Snow Leopard. I use my Mac in a production environment and depend on stability. They assured me before I upgraded that it would be stable and all the new saving and versions features could help my productivity. So far it's not helping me and downright annoying. You need to close all your windows before you close the program... if you have 5 windows open in terminal or textedit... every time you launch, they will launch all those windows. I just really want versions, not resume it seems.
But I can deal with it opening a million windows, just can't take it getting stuck on booting or not shutting down properly. This is a "feature" that should be fixed. LOL

No, only for apps available on the App Store. Office is not one of them.

    Can I use 27' iMac(Later 2009) as a display for Mac Pro(future 2013)?

To be able to use the iMac as an external display, the Mac Pro should come with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port, so think that it will include Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, although we don't know anything.
To connect the iMac to the Mac Pro, as your iMac has got a Mini DisplayPort, you have to use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable (Thunderbolt is compatible with Mini DisplayPort cables, but Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt cables). Then, just follow the steps of the page above to use the iMac as an external display

  • Can I Use a network drive to work with Mac and Windows?

Is it possible to introduce a network drive which can be accessed by both Mac and PC? I manipulate images in Photoshop on my Mac but the software I use to create slide shows is only available in PC format. This software is used more or less universally in the area of photography I am invo;ved with so changing is not an option. Can anyone advise me please.
    TC

Yes sure. Any NAS type drive formatted in any way will work. Both Mac OS X and Windows communicate by Ethernet Packets to a Networked drive and it is up to the NAS device OS to translate those Ethernet Packets to the format used on the drive.
Even if you are using a standard external drive connected to a Router or another computer, which is what a NAS is (A self contained computer with Operating System and hard drives), that router or NAS box does all the translating.

  • How do I use TC as a network drive to trans/store iMovie and iTunes files?

Can someone please walk me thru how I would have my music and iMovie files stored--not backed up, I got that under control--on my TC? My MacBookPro has less than 200MB of room and I want to be able to use the TC as a network drive (if I'm saying that correctly).
So I already have iMovie and iTunes saving files on my MacBook. I want to move those files/directories to the TC and, going forward, be able to have my MacBook save/store new iMovie and iTunes files on the TC. That is the main reason I bought this thing but I can't make it work.
I have looked high and low for this answer before bugging you guys for help but I just can't figure it out. I was able to save a few iMovie files to the TC, but when I try to access them in iMovie, I see the thumbnails but I get a little yellow triangle on each clip and it won't play it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Ed

once i click on the TC in the finder, it shows one other folder "data" (by default). this appears on my desktop as a drive. do i just start moving files anywhere onto this drive, and TM automatically can read the difference between my manual files and it's backup, or is there specific i need to save the files?

  • Iphone and appletv sync photos using itunes from a Network Drive; times out

I have a brand new Imac and a synology network drive. The network drive contains all my photos.
When I sync my various idevices (appletv, iphone, ipad) using itunes and specify a folder on the network drive. after a few hours or next day, when I plug a device to sync with itunes, i get a msg saying the folder can't be found.

  • Mapped network drive appears empty for all users on one computer

We have several network drives mapped via a batch file at log in.  On one particular Windows 7 computer one of these drives maps but appears empty.  Manually mapping to the drive and assigning a different drive letter makes no difference but manually
mapping by entering the IP address allows viewing and accessing the contents.
The malfunctioning network drive is also using Hosted BranchCache.  The following settings are set in local group policy:
    (\Network\BranchCache)
    Turn on BrancheCache - Enabled
Set BranchCache Hosted Cache Mode - Enabled - <servername>
Configure BranchCache for network files - Enabled - 0
The servers involved are running Windows Server 2012.
I am at a loss here and will appreciate any suggestions.
~JuniorG33k "Why is this thus? What is the reason for this thusness?"

With Offline Files disabled the contents of the mapped drive are visible and accessible.  Unfortunately, Offline Files must be enabled for BranchCache to work.
Looking in the Event Viewer at “Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\OfflineFiles\Operational” I can see that the mapped network drive transitioned to slow link during high latency but has never transitioned back.

  • Network drive volume name for same folder by multiple users

I am using a 1TB USB hard disk attached to a ASUS RT-AC68U wireless router as network drive.  There are multiple user accounts created on the same MacBook Air and they need to access the same folders on the network drive.  For example, we have folder called "iTunes" created on the network drive.
The following steps resulted in some problems encountered.
Step 1: When user1 mounts the iTunes folder as a network drive, the general info shows:
    General:
      Kind: Volume
      Server: smb://rt-ac68u/iTunes
    Name & Extensions:
      iTunes
Step 2: When user2 mounts the same iTunes folder as a network drive, the general info shows:
    General:
      Kind: Volume
      Server: smb://rt-ac68u/iTunes
    Name & Extensions:
    iTunes-1
Question: Why does OS X assign "iTunes-1" as the name of the same network folder on the network drive for user2?  Is there a way to retain the same original folder name for user1 and user2, such as "iTunes", so that it can be access as "/Volumes/iTunes" by both these users?

    Hi Drew,
Thanks for the recommendations.  They are useful tips to have in the arsenal, thanks.  However, the preferences discussed are intended for directly attached external hard disks and the specific discussion was to make it available to the network on a Mac that is powered up with no user logged in (like a OS X Server but user still need to log in).
    That's correct, I'm sorry I am wrong.
I do remember another defaults write option for detaching network drives on 'switch to loginwindow' because I needed the same thing - eventually I gave up & disabled fast user switching, it reduced the amount of issues for the clients. Sorry for confusing the two.
Have you considered mounting it via a startup script. At the moment it is failing because the path exists when User2 mounts it. If you try a script (at the level of the system) it should mount only once. Obviously sticking usernames & passwords into a script is not the best for security.
I think this issue is what NFS mounts can overcome, but I haven't used them for so long. They should be able to mount with no user interaction, but they are less flexible with permissions IIRC.
If your NAS supports NFS look at that, I think you both need to remove the user as the agent that mounts the disk. If the OS does it once (& permissions are correct) it should remove the 'diskname-1' issue.
When it works you end up with volumes in /Network/diskname.
I don't have a good place to start with NFS, so take a look around here…

@ElisabethBraut, do you get this error form MS…
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2712085
MS apps fall apart when you have disks mounted like this, it's a consequence of MS apps using an older way to represent filepaths.

  • Can i use ANY external CD/DVD drive with the NEW mac mini?

We just got the newest Mac Mini and want to get an external drive for importing and burning CD's and DVD's.
Can we use ANY external CD/DVD drive or do we NEED to use the "Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive."
    Thanks
    Eliot

    Maybe.
I've had some situations where a non-Apple DVD drive would not do a particular job.  When I tried the same project with the Apple SuperDrive everything worked perfectly.
This is an area where I would not try to save money.
