Using lightroom smart objects in photoshopcc

To save space on my laptop, I use smart objects(photos stored in port drive), I can edit from lightroom into PSCC only if I connect my portable drive. I have scoured through many articles without success. Is there a trick to this ? Lightroom synchs well with my photos on my portable drive, I would think PSCC can do the same without having to be connected. Does anyone know about this ? Thank you !

Photoshop does not need to as it is not connected to any drive or folder. It relies on your operating system, that can easily access your external drives, once they are connected. You could try setting your external drive's image folder as a favorite. (Both windows and Mac support favorites in explorer and finder) Then it would be easy to access the next time it is connected.

  • Program error after using connected smart objects

Hello, dear friends. I need your help.
    My problem is:
    1. I placed linked smart objects in to the photo and then tried to replace content of this smart object. Suddenly program shut down. And If I try to do the same one more time the same happened.
    2. Some times I could do this operation till the end but replaced content didn't save my changes made for this smart object. And then program shut down again.
This problem stops my work, that is why I'll be pleased to hear any solution.
    Thank you.

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far? (Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be of special interest).

  • Using the edit as Smart Object option.

I'm probably way behind the ball here, but I can't understand how the edit as smart object works. Sure I can open the file as a smart object in PS3, I can, say, apply the Distort/Lens filter to do a perspective transformation - but then how do I save and send it back to Lightroom? Using Export Smart Object just seems to send a file back to Lightroom but my transformation has disappeared. Close and save will create a file - so I still end up creating a new Tif everytime I use PS - but now manually synchronise. Where is the benefit?
I know I need a nice Video Tutorial or instruction but can't find one!
    Anyone know of one?
    Many thanks. Peter

    > Yes, add me to the list of being in need of an explanation of how exactly this is supposed to work. I'm hoping that it might be included in the Michael Reichmann and Jeff Schewe video that I purchased recently but as yet haven't downloaded all episodes.
There's a bunch of free videos on the NAPP site. They have an episode on Photoshop integration too. http://www.photoshopuser.com/lightroom2/
It's pretty clear how it should work from that video, except that it doesn't. Another bug, perhaps.
EDIT: Also it has been mentioned many times that one should have the PS CS3 10.0.1 Patch installed in order to get this going.

  • Why use smart objects

Been away from photoshop since early days of CS6. At that time I did not use smart objects. Now I see many tutorials using smart objects and smart filters. Is the use of smart objects in the mainstream now? Reasons for and against using them.

Smart Objects are a very good thing!
Photoshop Help | Work with Smart Objects
"Smart Object are layers that contain image data from raster or vector images, such as Photoshop or Illustrator files. Smart Objects preserve an image’s source content with all its original characteristics, enabling you to perform nondestructive editing to the layer."
I can't think of reasons NOT to use them.

  • Photoshop CS4 smart object template just overwrote a raw file - HELP

So.  I've been working in Photoshop extensively for about 6 years now and I am well aware that nothing we do in Photoshop or Lightroom is supposed to overwrite a raw file.  I'm not talking about changing it to something a little lighter or darker, I'm talking about replacing a picture of one baseball player with another one - and the original? Gone.
Here's what happened: I have a poster template that contains several layers, 7 of which are smart objects.  I change the pictures in the template by right-clicking the smart object layer and selecting "replace smart object," browsing to the new image, selecting, and here is what SHOULD happen: the target picture opens in Adobe camera raw, I make some small edits, click done or okay or something similar, and that new image has replaced the old one in the template.  What DID happen was this: I followed the procedure above and selected my target raw file, the picture that was already in the template (the one I was trying to replace with my target file) opened in Adobe camera raw.  I thought - Hey, that's wierd!  Closed the ACR dialog and tried again.  Same thing happened.  I opened lightroom and saw - to my HORROR - that the target file had been changed to the same image that was in the template.
If it clarifies: pictures of player A (who played in 2009) is in all of the smart object layers in my template.  I want to make that poster be of player B (who played in 2012) so I begin replacing all the smart objects.  When I get to the 3rd image in the poster template, Photoshop overwrites my raw file of player B with the smart object photo of Player A.  There were no photos of player A on the network drive that the picture of Player B was on.  But there's one now.  My raw file shows that it was modified about 10 minutes ago.
We tried undoing in Photoshop.  That did nothing.  We tried deleting the xmp file.  That did nothing.  We removed it from the lightroom catalog and reimported it.  It is now a picture of Player A from 2009 and my picture of Player B from 2012 is just gone.
Anybody have any idea what this could be and how we could avoid it in the future?
    Best,
    Jamey

Now - JJ - when you say "overlay files" - what do you mean?  Because that feels like a good description for what happened.
We performed no save operation at any point during the sequence of events that ended with the image in one raw file being replaced by the image in the smart object.
As I wrote Smart Object layers embedded object is a copy of the original  and if you replace it you replace it with a copy of some other object. Embedded object are copies and independent from the original.  If after creating a smart Object layer who's embedded object is a copy of a raw file and its conversion settings. You change the original RAW files RAW conversion settings the smart object layer raw conversion setting are not changes for its a copy with independent raw conversion settings. When you replace a smart object layers contents you will replace the embedded object and you should replace it with an object the has the same pixel size and orientation. Because there is an associated transform for the object in the layer that is not replaced. The replacement is also a copy.  If the original smart object was created using  File Open where you choose a RAW file  ACR would open with the RAW files current conversion settings.  In ACR you can changes the setting then hold down the shift key to change the open image button to an Open Object button.  Using that button ACR will open a smart object layer in Photoshop the contents of the embedded object is a copy of the RAW file and the current ACR settings.  No File is written Photoshop is not a File Editor its a Document editor that has many data structures for different layer types.  When you replace the contents of a smart object you will be put into a "Place" file selection dialog if you choose a raw file it should have the same orientation as the image being replaced because of the associated transform. When you choose a RAW file ACR will open and you can change the conversion settings however there will be no Open Image button instead there will be an OK button.  There is also a save image button and you can save a RAW file that is a DNG file not a CR2 file. Like the DNG converter. If you click the OK button the embedded object in the smart object layer will be replaced with a copy of the selected RAW file and the current ACR settings. Again there is no file written Photoshop is not a File editor just the embedded smart object data is replaced in Photoshop smart object layer's data structure.
I do not think the use of smart objects in you process caused what you are experiencing and because it only happens once an a while I feel its more likely caused by some human error made during the processing in those cases. I would look elsewhere for what causing the overlay. In the place file selection dialog it is possible to rename files perhaps even by accident. Programs like LR and Bridge can rename and copy files perhaps overlay other files.

  • Replace smart object script

Disclaimer: I do not know how to script, but am willing to learn and am looking for advice.
I need to replace the text in a smart object from a data list then save the updated file using the smart object text. Is there an existing script that will do this?
I cannot use a straight text layer because I'm performing a free distortion warp on the smart object that does not work on straight text. Using variables seems like a logical solution, but the only variable type for smart objects is "visibility".
Plan "B" is to "replace smart object" with a series of PSD files containing the appropriate text. This works great, but I don't know how to automate it. I can easily create the series of PSD files using variables, but don't know how to automate their insertion into the template containing the distorted smart object.
I'm looking forward to learning something new!

I took a quick look at your script.
I do not know where the the displacement map come in,
The script seem the be replacing the object content of the current smart object layer.
That layer can have had all sort of photoshop functions associated with it and has an associated transform.  All smart object layer have an associated transform and may have smart filters and filter mask as well.
I see no code to handle the smart object size and make the replacement object have the same size or insure the replacement object is the aspect ratio and size.  Replacing  a smart object content does not change the current layer's associated the transform that transformed the original object. If the replacement object is not the same size as the original object the transform may not work like your expecting.
An associated displacement map may come into play because of smart filters on the smart object layer. Displacement  maps content are either for the layers content or for lower layers content to make the current layer to conform to lower layers contours.
In fact I create a four image picture package template that used a smart object for the image. Added CS2 for a file type that could be used to replace the image  in your script and ran your script.  It did pop up the ACR dialog if I select a raw file but it worked perfectly for my portrait cr2 files are the same size and aspect ratio. Ast the object.
And a jpeg was saved to my desktop.
When a different size landscape orianted portrait image is selected here is the result

  • How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

Working in the CC3D features, I am constantly making changes to my bump map. Every time I step-backwards, or make a significant change to the bump texture (smart object?), CC auto-saves the layer. This specific file is a very very large document (3 gigs in the bump texture layer alone), and the 3D layer has lots of lights and is very complex. This auto-refresh/update really bogs down the time that it would take me to make my changes. I have a very fast machine (I know it's fast, I dont need to list my specs), and I have all shadows disabled.
    How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

If you do not like a feature like smart objects there is nothing forcing you to use it. Use some other features to do what you want. Please don't ask Adobe to introduce bug into smart object support.
You could work on your bump maps textures in external files. When your done some time in the future you could edit your project with the smart object layer and use replace smart object. Only then will all smart filters be applied to the smart layer with the replaced smart object.
Or if by CC Auto save Layer you referring to CC Generate feature you can disable that feature.
I have no idea what your referring to when you write "CC auto-saves the layer" being a feature. I know CC Generate will write layers out as web files but that more a Web feature then a 3d feature.  Where do you see your layer being saved?

  • How to save a file with smart object?

I have just created a file from LR2, by choosing 'open as smart object' in PS.
I then added a cloning layer and did my cloning.
When I wanted to save the file, instead of PS turning it in into a PSD with the same name, I now suddenly got the 'save as' pop up screen and '-2' as the recommended name. The original folder where the file came from was not shown.
I don't know what that's all about, but I'd prefer it would just save the file as a PSD and automatically show the file alongside the NEF in LR2, like it does when I don't use the 'open as smart object' feature. Is this typical for working with smart objects opened straight from LR2?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Marsel

Well, like this you open the file s a smart object, so if you want to now clone on a layer but want it to be a part of the smart object then you go to the layer panel and click on the smart object's icon there to edit the smart object and you hit save (command S) and it will save with that layer to your original.
then when you click the tab or the window that has the original opened as smart object those changes will be reflected, but you will not see your cloned layer active as that is a part of the smart object and you have to open the smart object to get to it.
What you say! Yes that is what I say that is what a smart object is, you are using the smart object as a part of another document( that is why you are being asked to save as, as this new documents you can now make changes which will not effect the original which is the smart object unless you rasterize it which will make it no longer a smart object.
What good is a smart object, well there are many say you are using this document or image if you wish in say five projects and the image has been retouched and it is determined it should have some more work done to it all you have to do is retouch the smart object and all five projects are updated.
    You see smart.
And of course you can d things to all five projects that can be different from one another on other layers without ever destroying the work you have done to the smart object.

  • Linked Smart Objects - File Size Question

    Hey guys,
first time using linked smart objects and I was pretty excited about it at first. I have a large photoshop file with 1920x1080 image assets. The file size is about 1GB and everytime I make a minor change the entire file has to be re-uploaded to my Dropbox.
So I figured that I could make all these image assets linked smart objects so that I can keep the master file down in file size since most of the actual assets don't change. However, even the PSD that contains nothing by linked smart layer objects is already 400MB large. And that's in addition to the external PSD's it is now linking to.
Even if I duplicate a linked smart layer object in this PSD file it increased the file size by an additional 10MB per duplicate. Is this supposed to happen? Why does it take so much space to just link to external objects? I was super excited about using linked smart layer objects but this doesn't look like it would be helping much to decrease file size.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Philipp

    Hey Chris,
thanks again! I guess I just had different expectations. In my mind I was going to see a parent file around 10MB or something with all of the content being dynamically loaded from the linked smart objects.
Maybe that could be a feature requests for future versions.

  • Smart objects not updating.

hi, i'm currently stuck with and issue that's ruining my workflow and slowing me down.
the basic job is to photograph lamps and replace the background. (see hallmarklighting.com)
i usually do so by editing the original photo and cut it out with the pen tool, ending up with several layers of adjustments and whatnot. i take those layers and insert them into a smart object of a template file i made for the background, from there it's just a matter of saving the various output files (print/web/psd).
the issue is that just recently when i save the smart object, it doesn't update, the progress bar stops at about 75%. the program doesn't freeze nor does the computer. the layers are saved in the smart object, but it won't show up in the main file, preventing me from saving out the final image. it started last  week. i have discovered if i flatten the image of the smart object, it works as it should. I'd be fine with this solution if i wasn't constantly asked to rework files for advertising materials and whatnot.
if anyone has a suggestion as to what could be causing this or how to fix it please let me know.

  • Smart Objects between Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver while managing the version in Vesion Cu

Ok, so the title of this post sounds confusing. First off, I created a graphic in Illustrator CS3. It is to be used on a web page created in Dreamweaver CS3. I want to be able to streamline the editing process by using the Smart Object linking feature between Dreamweaver and Photoshop CS3.
Obviously, the problem is, I cannot link the Photoshop source to Dreamweaver because the source is not a Photoshop file, it is in Illustrator. The obvious solution to that is to export the Illustrator file as a Photoshop file. The problem with that is, I want to maintain the source in Illustrator and make edits in Illustrator.
So, my solution was to place the Illustrator file in Photoshop and make the Illustrator file a Smart Object in Photoshop. Then link that Photoshop file to the Dreamweaver page. So, basically, Photoshop is just the link between Dreamweaver and Illustrator. It works well! I click the little edit button in Dreamweaver abd it calls up the file in Photoshop. Then I double-click on the Smart Object layer in Photoshop and the source comes up in Illuistrator.
Now, here is the problem. To add to the confusion, I maintain versioning in Version Cue. So whenever I change the Illustrator file, I check it in to Version Cue. The Illustrator file I linked to in Photoshop is the local file on my computer. This file is syncronized with the version of the file that gets uploaded to Version Cue. This may sound complicated, but to see how I did it is pretty straight forward.
My assumption was, when I double clicked on the Smart Object layer in Photoshop, I would get the local copy of the Illustrator file to edit. But, that wasn't the case. Problem is, I got a temp file of the Illustrator graphic and NOT the original source file I linked to in Photoshop.
I can still edit the temp file and have those changes automatically made in Photoshop and then update the image in Dreamweaver. BUT, when I got to check in the new edits of the Illustrator file to Version Cue, it wants to create a new file and not rev-up to the new version of the original file. That's because the file I'm checking in is NOT the original file, it is a temp file.
Does anyone else use a workflow like this? If so, how do you do it?

Ok, so far I have come up with this solution. Usually after editing the Illustrator file I would check it in. But, as mentioned, I can't just do that because the file I'm editing is the temp file and not the original file syncronized with Version Cue.
So, instead of using Check-In when I'm done, I can use Save As... I can then overwrite my local file that is syncronized with Version Cue. That will save the new file as the correct name and automatically check it into Version Cue as the next version of the correct file.

  • Create Smart Object /Frame Layer from open file in PSE8?

I'm loving the trial version of PSE 8.  Several features that I don't want to live without!
One thing that I find more difficult is creating a Smart Object or a Frame Layer (did those get replaced?) from an open file.  Because I digital scrapbook in different aspect ratios (12x12 for print and 15x9 for my photo frame) I want to maintain independent resolution of my pictures so I can change the crop, size etc.  My regular process (pse6) is to open a bunch of pictures and elements (papers, embellishments, etc), adjust the pictures as I desire (usually Smart Fix, plus a little midtone contrast), drop the elements into a blank file or template from the layers palette so they will not be frame layers, but drop the photos in from the Open Files bin as Frame Layers.  Then I simply resize the frame itself to match what I want on the page, and adjust the picture inside the frame.
With PSE 8 I found I can drop a file from "Show Files from Organizer" and they will become Smart Objects (File: Place works too).  However, they have to be saved first, and I often don't save all my changes.   I would like to be able to create a Smart object or Frame Layer from an open file.
Also, is there any way to change the size/zoo of the picture within a Smart Object?    Or crop it?  If not, does this really mean I have to crop my file, save it, and then add it as a Smart Object?  Ugh.  (Or create a rectangle for each SO and group them to form a clipping mask, I suppose. Either is a pain).
Any recommendations for a better workflow that maintains independence?
    Thanks,
    Lisa

Thank you!  This is very timely as I've been playing around with digital scrapbooking a lot more.  I've been having luck with using a grouped layer to "crop" the photo.  This way I can actually crop out what I know I'll never use, but use the layer mask to keep some edges that I might want around.
Do you have any opinion on whether it's better to use a smart object or not?  I'll try both, I guess, and see what it does to my file size.

  • New Smart Object Via Copy

    Hello Everyone.
I have a smart object, and, If I apply Control "J"    Or Drag It to the New Layer Icon, It will Duplicate the Layer.
And If I Go to Layer-Smart Objects- New Object Via Copy, It dose the same thing.
What Is the Different between Control J, or Go to Layer- Smart Objects- New Smart Object Via Copy.
    Thanks

You can have duplicated smart object layers that share a common embedded object and you can have duplicated smart object layers with independent embedded smart object.  To get independent embedded object you need to use Layers>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy.  There are several way to create duplicate smart object layer with shared embedded object.  Read Photoshop Help on smart Objects

  • GoLive 8 Smart Objects not working

This is driving me nuts. I previously used Smart Objects in GoLive 7 without problems. Now whenever I try to use a Smart Object - like a PSD File for a Headline in GL8 I get an error message that "The task could not be completed. File not found" (this is my cumbersome translation actually) This is after the "Save for web..." dialog with all the GIF & JPEG settings.
Any clues? I store the PSDs in the SmartObjects folder in the website folder, and the filename doesn't contain any germanic umlauts or the like...

Weird things going on here.  I have 3 iPad minis.  All are first generation and two of them are running 8.1.2.  On one of these the smart cover is no longer functional and the settings item "lock/unlock" is missing.  On another running 8.1.2 the item remains in settings and the cover works.  On the third I have not upgraded so it's still running 8.1.1 - the cover functions and the setting for "lock/unlock" is there.  It seems one of these lost the setting during the upgrade, one did not, and I have not tried it yet on the third.  I need this feature so hopefully there will be some communication from Apple on this issue.

  • Smart objects and filters in elements 10-how to?

    please help...thanks

The main use of Smart Objects is to embed an image file into a PSD so that it can maintain resolution independence. This means you can non-destructively transform (scale, rotate, skew) the layer without losing the quality of the orignal file. You can still change the opacity or blend mode of a Smart Object layer and apply Layer Styles from the Effects panel as well. So Smart Objects allow for true non-destructive editing in Elements, but not with the sophistication of Photoshop CSx.
Whether or not Viveza works with Photoshop Elements 10 is up to the manufacturer of the plug-in.
