Using Logic 8 with Akai MPC 1000

Hi Everyone,
I've been using the AKAI MPC 1000 for a few years now, and purchased Logic Studio 8, right around the time Logic 9 came out, so I was able to get a good deal on it. However, I haven't used it up until recently, and I want to find a way to play my MPC right into Logic via audio. I have an M-Audio FireWire Solo interface, and I believe I have everything plugged in properly. Below I'll list how I have everything set up, so hopefully someone will be able to see something I'm missing.
1) Before i turn my computer on, I plug in the audio interface via firewire to my computer
2) I have instrument cables plugged into the outputs of my MPC, and into the inputs of my audio interface
3) When I plug in my interface to the computer and turn on my computer, a blue light on the interface turns on, indicating that it is in operation.
4) I open up Logic, and turn on my MPC
5) I create a new audio track, and press the record-enable button
Now, I thought this would be sufficient, however when I press the pads on my MPC, the levels in Logic do not appear.
So, I went into system preferences and put in the input to the audio interface, and the output to the headphones that I was using. Within system preferences, when I hit the pads it indicated that there were levels, however I still couldn't hear any sound.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You were in System Preferences > Sound > Input, and you were watching the meter there. Watching that meter is a good way to confirm that your MPC is producing audio, and that your audio interface is properly conveying that audio into your computer. However, the controls in this window are generally irrelevant to Logic. These controls are mostly relevant when you are working with programs like iTunes and Quicktime Player. To get audio in and out of Logic, you have to create the proper settings inside Logic. Those settings inside Logic are here: Logic Pro > Preferences > Audio > Devices > Core Audio. Look at the Device menu. This is where you have to make sure your FireWire Solo audio interface is selected. Is it?
And then attach your headphones to the FireWire Solo, not to your Mac.
Create a new project in Logic, and create an audio track, and make sure that track is record-enabled (click R in the track header). That's all you should have to do. Hit the pads on the MPC, and you should hear it in your headphones, and you should see meters lighting up in Logic.
This should work if you haven't changed any other Logic settings from their defaults. If it doesn't work, there are a few other simple things to check.
You may eventually want to create a midi connection between Logic and the MPC, and not just an audio connection. But you can worry about that later.

I would like to know if I can use the drums sounds in logic with an mpc 1000. I would feel better using the pads on the machine to create a drum beat instead of a mouse. Plus it might save me time and $ to look for the drums.
    any suggestions?

  • Syncing issues with Logic and Akai MPC 1000

I followed the directions in the manual and even some advice on another forum related to MPC's, but I still keep having problems whether I sync as Logic being Master or Slave.
When I sync Logic as Master the Tracks are kept in time with each other but they are not syncing to the grid in Logic right. It's a little off even though I set a few blank bars at the beginning of the sequence I wanted to record, and set the the tempo in Logic to the exact same tempo on the MPC. When I go to copy and paste certain bars while arranging it's always off cause the tracks are not in time with the bars in the arrange window. I want the tracks to be in time with the grid so it is much easier to copy, paste and arrange.
When I try to sync Logic as Slave...I can't even get it to work at all. The transport location just seems to jog in place. The last digits in the transport just keeps repeating themselves but no others, and there is no movement of the play head. It's just stuck. I don't know why it's doing that. When I try to sync Logic as slave I make sure the MPC is NOT in slave mode whatsoever, and that Logic isn't sending (as far as I know) any Master info to the MPC, so I really don't understand why it locks up.
I'd really appreciate help in getting this sorted out as soon as possible.

Ok, so I checked the SMPTE offset. I switched it so it will start at 00:00:00:00 or what have you. Good news is that the play head is no longer stuck. The first time I tried this I got an error message saying "System Overload. The Audio Engine was not able to process all required data in time. (-10011)" after about 8-10 bars of recording.
Next time I tried this I did I stereo pass of one track and it worked perfect. It recorded the whole sequence and the sync was perfect. It was only that one time. Now I can't even get the empty initial bars to go through without getting that error.
What is happening with this? I should have a powerful enough computer. I have a 2.2 ghz Intel core 2 duo Macbook pro, 2 gigs of ram, os 10.4.11

  • Recording into logic from my MPC 1000

Does any one know how to record into logic with an MPC 1000. I've got sync but cant figure out how to get a level.

well the easier way is maybe to transfer ur sample and program to logic via floppy(then u need a floppy drive).or via aksys(then u need the usb option slot on mpc.don't even know if it exist!?).or transfer what u wand digitaly via the coaxial output of the mpc to the optical in of ur mac(then u need a coax2optic converter, and i hope u own a g5 for the optical in)
seriously it's difficult to answer ur question cause there is many different way .u should give more info.
    wich mac?
    do u have any soundcard?
do u have any optional card output on the mpc?
is there a built in coaxial on the mpc?
did u receive a soft call A.K.S.Y.S with the mpc?
in this particular case u should have a usb port or at least an optional usb card?

  • Use Logic with an Arranger

Can I use Logic with a Roland G 1000 Arranger as a master, to be able to Start and Stop Logic from my keyboard? If yes, How?

It could be that you've not got the appropriate snap settings, so that when you copy a region its snapping to the wrong place (like, the nearest beat or the nearest bar or whatever)  - I dunno, its a bit difficult to imagine what you're trying to do exactly.
There are menu items in Logic for copying/moving sections and ways of creating gaps to insert something else and that kind of thing - I don't use them myself, but it might be the way to go for you, if you can get Voice Over to recognise the menu commands but, unfortunately, I really don't know anything about that.

  • Using Logic with virtual guitarist

I'm trying to use logic with virtual guitarist. Do you use this as an instrument or midi? When I use it as an instrument virtual guitarist does not follow logic tempo. And when I use it as a midi track I can not play it since virtual guitarist is not a hardware. Any sugestions?

VG is a virtual instrument. If you want to use it within Logic, you need to convert the .vst into an AU (Audio Unit) so Logic can see and use it as .vst isn't supported anymore in OS X.
The .vst to AU conversion is best done via the VST-AU Wrapper application, available from the http://www.fxpansion.com website or your local dealer. No, I don't work for them, but I use the wrapper extensively for older .vst instruments in Logic.
If you need more detail information about this (and Virtual Guitarist in particular), you may want to check the VG forum here : http://bornemark.se/forum/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=a4bd0b1112e9d381261c09d8160fc1f7

  • Logic Express and MPC 1000

Does anyone know how to dump beats from an MPC 1000 into logic? How do you get the sounds from the MPC onto logic and how do you record?

I think the best is to sync both with Midi Time Code (check your manual at page 451) and then, record your MPC into a stereo audio track.

  • Question about using Logic with guitar on stage. HELP!

    Hello,
    I'm a guitarist.
I would need some advises about using Logic in a live situation..
How do you move from one track to the other using the keyboard?
Could that action be controlled by some kind of footswitch?
Also, the REC button has to be always ON to hear the sound or is there another way to set that up?
I would like to create let's say 6 tracks with plugins for having 6 different guitar sounds.
Is it very heavy for the CPU?
I'm using a macbook with 2GB of ram and a firewire FA-66 edirol sound card.
Would you also recommend to use a preamp?
Many many thanks for your help!

Why to jump from one track to another?
Simply create a folder with all the Channel strip settings and assign two key commands of your choice to navigate forward and backward.
And yes, you can assign that command to a MIDI controller (or pedal) too.
About monitoring have a look at the reference manual page 211.
Before to buy a preamp try using the Hi-Z input from your Edirol.
Anyway, six tracks with six plugins on each track are not an issue for your macbook.

  • Stability of included Logic plugins when using Logic with BFD 2

    Hi,
I have a new mac pro purchased a couple of months ago. I bought logic studio, and then BFD 2 (a drum addon). Now that I've got a good pair of speakers connected up to my mac (through the phones socket as changing logic to use the line out crashed it) I started to use the effects plugins to process the drum sounds, just using the plugins installed when you install logic studio. Now, i found it was crashing rather easily, so i installed the two logic updates i found on the apple updates site, named LogicPro8.0.2Update.dmg and ProApplicationsUpdate2008-01.dmg.
Unfortunately, the mac isn't connected to the 'net so i can't automatically check for updates. BFD 2 is also up-to-date.
However, Logic is still extremely prone to crashing when I try and change anything in a plugin. The plugins I've tried using so far are the multipressor and the compressor but it's the same thing: change some settings in the plugin, click on the play button in the transport controls and the mac bombs (can't do anything)
Am i just not being patient enough? I do wait a few minutes before powering off but for the last couple of minutes there's no sign of activity (e.g. hard disk spinning) from the mac
I thought macs were so much more expensive than PCs because they work better. Well if this is "better" I'm never going to waste the extra money buying a Mac again. I'm new to music-making so it's not like I'll be wasting a detailed knowledge of Logic

Sorry to hear about your frustrations. I'm using BFD2 on a macpro 8 core. And it's running extremely well. My computer will still occassionally lock up, but it is the best it has ever been. Their should be NO issue with using Logic's plugins with BFD2. They have been tested thoroughly. I don't think your 'patience' is the issue. Something sounds wrong.
Try to eliminate issues, to figure out what is going on. Don't run any other applications while running Logic. You might try temporarily removing all 3rd party components from Audio Unit plugin folder except BFD2.
Run disk permissions repair, and repair disk. I gather running 'airport' might cause issues, but I never used that myself. If you DONT use BFD2, can you still get Logic to crash moving knobs in the plug in?. Also Logic SHOULD NOT crash by using line out. That's an indication that something else is wrong
Also try logging on as another user. Create one if necessary. See if Logic/BFD runs better that way..
The last, most desperate measure is WIPE your hard drive, and re-install OSX, and your applications. I have had to do that a couple of times, and it will make a huge difference.
If you run a program a program like techtool pro, and ascertain, there is nothing wrong with the hardware of your machine. (and there probably isn't). It implies there is some kind of conflict with software, or corruption of data on your drives. And that does happen. I have a huge EXS sample library, and it is not uncommon, for it to occassionally find an 'end of line error', or not able to find a sound sample at all. These issues 'creep in' just like one day, you get in your car and find the windshield wipers don't work, or the radio crackles etc.
Hope this helps. Did you try checking BFD's sight for help?. I have emailed them with Logic issues, and they have been helpful for me in the past...

  • Using Logic with bootcamp

I'm wondering if i can run logic while running bootcamp. Basically what i'm trying to do is run FL studio as a vst inside Logic 8 (using rewire i think). FL studio is pc only and logic is mac only, so you can see my problem. Is this possible using bootcamp/parallels etc?

You're going to run into two major problems trying to do this.
    1) FL Studio and Logic don't "speak the same language" and really, unless you are using FL as some sort of software mixer, you won't be able to bus audio through FL and into Logic.
    2) ReWire is (to my knowledge) a Propellerhead software tool for getting the sounds in Reason into another host DAW like Logic or FL Studio.
This begs the question, why use FL Studio at all? I know the sequencer is really easy-to-use and visual and all.... but FL Studio can barely keep up with Garage Band these days, much less Logic.
You'll probably find yourself with less headaches trying to export all your old FL projects over to Logic, track-by-track or starting from scratch with your sounds in Logic. Either way, you're going to save a lot of time that you would just waste trying to accomplish something that can't really happen....

  • Using logic with 003+ and secondary interface

Hello, I currently have a 003 rack + (8 inputs) and a m audio pro fire (8 inputs), and I am trying to get them to work inside logic. I currently have them linked together via optical cable. I know I cannot aggregate using a 003 rack which would fix my issue, but I can only get 8 of the 16 inputs to work.
As of writing this I have not tried the output, I have not gotten that far. Is there a way to make logic understand that there is 16 inputs instead of 8? I have the core audio manager telling me that the 003 rack has 18 ( 16 in 2 out) available and that it's in the ADAT format, but anytime I try to use any input greater than 8 I get no sound.
Does anyone know how to get this to work so I can enable a total of 16 tracks to record?
I'd very much like to switch from pro tools to logic for my projects to be more versatile.
Thanks so much in advance for any answers.

I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately, I can't offer a solution, just want to express that I have the same requests. A simple, convenient way would be if the quick search bar would follow the same logic as in Google:
Multiple separate keywords -> AND by default
Multiple keywords with OR in between -> OR logic
Multiple words in " " -> The keyword must contain of exactly those words in the same order  (which is the default and only option now; unfortunately, it's the one that is required the least)
Yes, there is an advanced search option that does the trick, but as you said, it's very cumbersome to create queries there.
Something in the same direction: Bridge is powered by a MySQL database. So, why is there no way to do a search using an SQL-Query? For those people that work with SQL (and those are quite many, I suppose), this would be a dream!
I know, there is a suggestion forum as well, but posts there are never replied to.
So please, if any developper sees this, consider it for a future release.
One more thing: In the keywords panel, you can use a hierarchy, which is great to make your huge list of keywords more organized. However, in the filter panel, they are all flat and not organized by topic. Would it not be possible to apply the same hierarchy there? After all, the hierarchy IS saved in the metadata: in the XMP part of metadate, there is a field called "HierarchicalSubject" that contains this data. So why not use it??
    Best regards
    - spitfire
P.S. What is the best place to make suggestions to the developpers? Since the topics in the suggestion forum never get any replies, I don't think it's the right place ...

Use method 2 to help you set up Reason and Logic.
Also you might want to upgrade from Reason 3.0 to 3.0.4.

    anybody ?
or do you think its a good idea to run logic on it ?
    thanks

    cool
i tried using logic with pb 12"
but couldnt have any plug ins active when recording vocals or it records crackly.
th escreen sizeis no problem, coz i set up screen sets , so f1 for 12 vocal tracks, f2 for next 12, f3 for mixer part 1, etc
click of a button to see what you want big enough, i never really need to see all the tracks in one go
i would have thought the ibook would have more problems than the pb !
but maybe your studentis just using it for midi....
    which takes no power lol....

If you want to use an external harddrive and a firewire interface you'll run out of firewire busses even with expresscard adapter and the saffire really doesnt like to be daisychained. And when I had the Liquid Mix, never really used is as a control surface didnt really find it better over using a mouse. And even though its takes processing load of the cpu it still caused other problems and made the system less stable. This was on Logic 8 and the drivers they had for it about 2 years ago though so dont know if its better now.
But did you like the sound of the liquid mix's DSP plug ins or not?, i am not interesting in using it as a surface board, i doubt that is what people buy it for, the built on DSP is what i am curious about,
As for the Saffire products i know the older models like the Pro 10 and Pro 26 i/os do not have any on board DSP processing like the liquid mix but Focusrite claims that the quality is alike their Green Channels, hows do or did they sound to you guys?
