Using LTO SAS Tape for backup

I have a Server 2012 R2 computer with a LTO-5 Tape drive.
The tape drive shows up in the Device Manager and it says that the device id installed and working properly. It has a name of 'Tape0'
When I go to the Window Backup server the only choices for backup destinations are hard drive paths OR network paths.  The is no reference to the tape drive.
If I try backing up from SQL to \\.\TAPE0 I get an System Error 5 (Access Denied).
Where should look to activate/configure the tape drive.
Hints?

Hi,
You cannot use tape drives as a backup storage location for Windows Server Backup. You could use Microsoft's Data Protection Manager or a third-party software to achieve this.

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

First time using external hard drive for backup of computer....it asks "Do do you want to erase disk?" In order to proceed, I have to say "yes" ... is that what I want to do? ...Seems like I'm skipping a step...

To use Disk Utilities, attach the drive, open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities and then highlight the LaCie drive in the left panel of the DU window.  In the right panel, choose the Partition button top center of the pane.  Then decide how many partitions you want on the drive, one is just fine.
Then choose the format, the default is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which is prefered.
Then name the partition or drive.
Then choose the partition table, the default is GUID which is prefered.
Then Apply and you will get to confirm that you want to erase and format the drive.
Quit DU and you are ready to go.

  • Using Time Capsule only for Backup, Not Attached to Modem Network

How do I use the Time Capsule for backup without attaching it to the Internet?
I have a slower Airport already attached to my cable modem. I don't want to slow down the Time Capsule by attaching it to that network, and I don't want the Time Capsule out in my living room by the modem. If someone takes my computer, I don't want them taking my only backup of it too.
I want to put the Time Capsule in a closet or an attic, as many people do now.
How do I get it to function independently of the Internet, though? Would seem easy enough. I want to just use the backup function, but not sure if it can be set up without connecting to a modem. If that's true, why on earth would Apple shoot its backup solution in the foot like that? Hope it's not the case.
Any guidance out there for doing this or confirmation that it's impossible?

Yes, TC will work without an internet connection.
Your issue with not have the TC network connect to your existing network means you have TWO independent networks. However, your Macs have ONE Airport card; therefore, you can only be logged onto either your internet network or your TC network. Therefore, you would need to manually change your Airport settings to log onto the TC network to access it or maybe an additional network card on your Mac (I don't know if this is possible). BTW, you will need to set up the TC to Create a wireless network.

  • Using RAID 1 mirror for backups

I am considering setting up a RAID 1 volume (1 primary and 1 secondary disk) and using the secondary mirror as the source for archive to a file-server. This should give me a perfect snapshot in time of my volume and the read access from the volume would not affect system performance too much. The strategy I have in mind is to remove the mirror from the RAID 1 volume, mount it as a normal volume and make a backup from it (using EMC Retrospect) to a file server over our network. Once the backup is done, I would unmount the mirror and reconnect it to the primary disk to recreate the RAID volume.
    My questions are:
    1) Is this possible with OS X's built-in RAID functionality?
    2) Am I better off with using SoftRAID 3?
    3) Will the rebuild of the RAID volume be as if it was from scratch (that is, would it take too long for a 150GB volume)?
    4) If I have two 150GB disks (SATA), can I make the entire disk one RAID volume and still boot from it?
    5) If the answer to Q4 is "no", with OS X's built-in RAID, can I make a RAID volume out of partitions from two disks? In other words, am I forced to use whole disks for a RAID members in OS X?
Your help in this would be very much appreciated.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Using mirrored RAID is NOT my sole backup method. It is part of it. The idea is to backup a secondary mirror to an tape or disk based backup system on our file server using EMC Retrospect. This would provide recovery from deleted or modified files.
The need to unmount a mirror from backup comes from my desire to have perfect snaphots-in-time for backup. Backing up a live filesystem can lead to inconsistent states in the backup. For example, backing up 50G over a network can take several hours. If, for example, you are writing an article that contists of several files, and you had a draft of file #1 that was copied to the backup. A little later, while editing file #2, you decided to move some text from it to file #1. After moving this, file #2 is backed up, with the moved text removed from it. The end-result in the backup is that the text is in neither file #1 or file #2.
Backing up live file-systems has this inherent danger. One way of avoiding it is to create an instant snapshot of the entire file system to a second drive and backup from that drive. The mirrored secondary drive in the RAID system would have this snapshot, continually updated. It would have to be disconneted from the RAID set before the backup from it is started in order to preserve the snapshot's consistency.

  • Is it possible to use Boot Camp to partition an external hard drive so there is a OSX partition and a Windows partiton?  I want to use the external drive for backup only, NOT to load Windows and NOT to use as a boot drive.

I have partitioned the internal hard drive and am running Lion and Win7 Pro on my iMac i5 2.7GHz with 16GB RAM.  Can I use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition on an OSX external hard drive to use for backing up both systems to the same HDD?  I do NOT want to install OSX Lion or Windows 7 Professional on the external drive.  I do NOT want to boot either system from the external drive.  The 3TB external drive is for backup only.

Use NTFS for Windows and buy Paragon NTFS for OS X
You can also try Paragon HFS for Windows
As long as you are using for data and backups, you can leave the drive as GPT too.
I would recommend strongly to always have a 2nd bootable Mac OS drive, only need 30GB partition. System maintenance. Though LIon Recovery Mode finally makes it less but not totally unneeded.
And yes you can use Windows to create a partition.
Boot Camp is too broad. Do you want or mean BC Assistant? not needed but probably possible.
MBR has trouble with 3TB drives.

  • HT3275 I am using an external drive for backup. I am now getting a message that the drive needs a disk repair, but when I run disk repair it  just seems to freeze.

I am using an external drive for back up. Yesterday the backup failed and I received a message that the external drive( a passport drive) needed a 'disk repair", when I ran disk repair nothing happened it seemed to freeze. Suggestions? should i simply erase the external drive and start over-my computer is fine.

Get a different drive for backup.
In the meantime, once you are backed up some drive safe, then you can attempt to repair the backup drive using the repair the directory link.

When ever the power goes out or I restart my iMac the external hard drive that is used for backups by Time Machine is dismounted and all backups are gone. I can reselect it and it will start working again, but I am worried if the iMac hard drive should fail will I be left without a backup ?

"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • Using An External RAID for backup on a PB

I have a powerbook and would like to split my internal hard drive into a 20GB and a 60GB parrtition.
the 20GB would be my basic home directory, Applications and System.
The 60GB would have all my data.
Now the question. I have a 60Gb external FW/USB2 hard drive. I would like to use that as a MIRRORED Raid drive for my data.
Can I unplug the RAID drive and go about my work for the day making file changes and such. Then come back home and plug in my external MIRRORED RAID drive and have everything update?
Or is that not allowed. Seems like it would be an awesome backup system.
    thanks in advance

    Charles
I think you have slightly mistunderstood the way RAID systems work.
Firstly you cannot use the PowerBook's hard drive as part of the RAID because it will be running the RAID software in OS X.
However it is possible for to use two external drives that are then 'combined' to form a single RAID drive.
For the kind of use you are thinking of backup software, like Retrospect or Data Backup that permits 'incremental backups' will do the job. However, you will probably need a larger external drive than 60GB.
Alternatively you can get something like Maxtor's OneTouch drives, which has an easy to use backup feature.
EDIT: RAID 0 (striped) and RAID 1 (mirrored) are the only supported RAID levels in OS X's software controller. What I described earlier is equivalent to RAID 1. Special hardware RAID controllers support more levels and is what most demanding RAID systems will be using, rather than a software controller.

  • HT201250 if I used external hard disk for backup time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

If I used external hard disk for back up time machine, is it possible to use that external hard disk to save another else from diffrent computers?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can do this, but you should make a new volume on your external disk. Time Machine needs a volume that is only used to store backups, so you can't store other data in the same volume as the one you are using for making backups.
If you want to create another volume on your external disk, use Disk Utility to do this > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html Anyway, you should get another external disk to store other files, but if you don't want to, you can create another volume in it

  • Using a camcorder tape as backup

If there is only a very small amount of footage I want to use on a tape, is it possible to capture all necessary scenes, edit them and then export them back on to a tape, using dv out to a tape recorder, without compressing any of the footage, i.e. Loosing any of the original quality.

    Hi
    Good idea.
    a. Copy back to Camera Pros:
    • full quality
    • easy and straight forward
    cons:
    • Your editings is there and can't easily be altered when re-imported - like texts, transitions etc.
    b. Copy to an external hard disc is as written: 13Gb per hour imported movie + many more Gbs
    after editing etc.
    pros:
    • fast to return for further editing
    cons:
    • cost of extra hard disc
    c. To DVD disc pros.
    • Easy and cheep
    cons
    • Lower quality
    • Hard to get back for further editing - and even more reduced quality

  • I want to use the Time Capsule for backup only.

I picked up a Time Capsule thinking I could use it just for backups. So far, I've been unable to connect to it. I did set it up to extend my current WiFi network, but now I can't see it with Time Machine. What do I do to make the Time Capsule to function just as a wireless back up drive?

OK, I tried this, what happened is that my iMac lost connection to the Internet while the Ethernet connection was active.
I said to do this only whilst you setup the TC.. and maybe do the initial backup .. otherwise the idea is to put the TC into the network, which is what you were trying to do.. but obviously do it so that it works.
As stated, if you bridge the TC.. simply update it.. and plug it into the main router by ethernet. You should now be able to do what you wanted.. connect to it by wireless and use it for backups. The fact that it is linked to the network is absolutely necessary if you want internet at the same time as backups are running. The wireless cannot connect to two different routers at the same time.
I'd like to know how do I not have it override my Wifi connection and allow me to access the hard drive? If I can't do this, I'll be forced to take the Time Capsule back.
Please give me exact steps how to setup and use a Time Capsule just as a hard drive. Thanks!
You only need to do this if you intend to keep the TC connected only to your computer by ethernet, without a network connection.. is that what you want?
The trick is very simple. Set ethernet manually not by dhcp.. do not set a gateway (router) or DNS for ethernet.
You can also simply change wifi connection to the top of the list. Both of these are set in the Mac itself not the TC.. the TC can just run as router but with nothing connected.. and ignore the lack of connection.
The end point of this process though is you have the TC doing what an external hard drive can do, better cheaper and faster. To use the TC as a backup device only connected by ethernet or wireless is a waste.
Tell me what you want to do.. ie your preferred setup in the light of the previous discussion and I will give you all the screen shots for the exact steps to set that up. I will need to know what IP your current router uses.. and the dhcp range if possible.

  • Can Time Capsule use another local network for backup?

Our LAN has a a separate wireless network solely for backup. The machines on the network use ethernet for routine operations and wireless to access backup disks. Can a Time Capsule access this backup LAN or must the machines all tune into its own wireless network?

Yes, you can. Just mount the disk you want to backup onto and select it in the Time Machine preferences. The backups are deadly slow wirelessly, so you'll want to backup with your mac getting it's internet over FireWire from the computer with the disk attached. But restoring works well wirelessly. As you can probably tell by my description here, I backup to a network volume myself. I do know that you can't backup to the same backup scheme both with a local disk and network volume (same disk).
    Hope this helps,
    Alex

  • Anyone using DPM 2012 R2 for backup on Windows 8.1 64-bit laptops? - any issues like freezes/crashes?

We've been using this for a a few months now, still testing. Feedback initially good, but now noticed users reporting back their laptops are freezing, typically when using Outlook. It's been a hard one to figure out, but the only common factor we can see
to prevent this happening again is to disable or remove the DPM client.
We are looking into all possibilities like anti-virus exclusions etc, but just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before, got any ideas? Thanks!

Try this - On the client - Increase the WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead to 100 to take the load off the client and  DPM when synchronizations are in progress.

On some client computers, you may notice the computer running slow when a backup is in progress. You can improve the computer’s responsiveness by setting the following registry key DWORD.
    Key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent\ClientProtection
    Value
    WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead
    Data
    50
    Type
    DWORD
    NOTE: Optimizing WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead settings
The default value for WaitInMSPerRequestForClientRead DWORD is 50 (32H). This means the dpm agent will wait 50ms per read cycle to locate changed data. You can increase the value to 75 or 100 to reduce IO on the disk to improve machine responsiveness at
the cost of longer backup times. If you want to increase backup speed at the expense of responsiveness, reduce the value to 40 or 30.

  • How to use scripts in RMAN for backup

Hi I would like to create some scripts for recovery backup and then use it in rman, how can it be accomplished?
For example I would launch an incremental backup the week and a full the sunday.
I would like to launch this scripts automatically, any ideas on how I can do this?

    hi
    Note the following restrictions:
Execute CREATE SCRIPT only at the RMAN prompt.
RMAN must be connected to a target database.
RMAN must be connected to the recovery catalog either through the CATALOG command-line option or the CONNECT CATALOG command, and the catalog database must be open.
You cannot run CREATE SCRIPT once and then use this same script on multiple target databases. You must connect to a specific target database and then run CREATE SCRIPT to create a script for this specific target. Each script is associated with one and only one target database.
You cannot execute a RUN command within a stored script.
The @ and @@ commands do not work within CREATE SCRIPT.
Quotes must be used around the script name when the name contains either spaces or reserved words.
    Keywords and Parameters
For descriptions of the individual commands that you can use in a stored script, refer to the appropriate entry, for example, "BACKUP".
    Syntax Element Description
    'script_name'
Creates a stored script with the specified name. The statements allowable within the brackets of the CREATE SCRIPT 'script_name' { ... } command are the same allowable within the RUN command. The statements within the braces constitute the job_command_list.
Note: To run the stored script, specify EXECUTE SCRIPT within the braces of the RUN command.
    Example
    Creating a Script: Example
The following UNIX shell script creates a recovery catalog script called b_whole_10 that backs up the database and archived redo logs, then executes b_whole_10:
    #!/usr/bin/tcsh
    rman TARGET / CATALOG rman/rman@catdb <<EOF
    # creates recovery catalog script to back up database and archived logs
    CREATE SCRIPT b_whole_l0
BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 0 TAG b_whole_l0
    DATABASE PLUS ARCHIVELOG;
    # runs the recovery catalog script b_whole_10
    RUN { EXECUTE SCRIPT b_whole_10; }
    EOF
