Using Mac as a test web server over network.

Hello,
I'm trying to play around with the Joomla CMS. I want it setup on a mac that i have setup as a server in my simple home network.
I have mamp (www.mamp.info) setup on it to easily have an apache and mysql server going.
on the mac, i can easily start up joomla by going http://localhost:8888/joomla/ in a browser.
How would I get to that from another computer through the network? I've tried it's network ip address with no luck.
Please help me out.

You mean you've tried "http:192.168.0.3:8888/joomla" or similar from another computer on the same local LAN?
If so, then is the software firewall enabled on that Mac? And if so, have you opened port 8888 on that Mac? (Sys Prefs | Sharing | Firewall > New, and add a new service that allows unsolicited port 8888 traffic -- or you could turn the Mac firewall off -- probably okay if you have firewall in your broadband modem enabled, and as long as you trust that none of your local machines will get a trojan that attacks another port (e.g., smtp, telnet) someday)

Using OS X Server As Internal Testing Web Server

First off, I'll admit it: I'm not a server bod by any stretch of the imagination. I'm a web designer/developer and we've just got a copy of OS X Server and one of the things we'd like to move away from is the developers in our company developing sites locally (using MAMP Pro) and instead, to have them develop onto OS X Server, and then deploy from that to our live web server once the site is ready to go live.
So, I've tried setting up a few sites, and I'll be honest, I'm 100% stumped. I'm assuming that what we want can be easily handled by OS X Server; effectively, it should serve multiple virtual hosts using domain names such as test.dev etc as well as run PHP and MySQL.
Are there any "dummies" guides out there? I assume we'll need to get to grips with the DNS and Web aspects of the Server Admin; will we also need to set up the developer Macs to get look at OS X Server for DNS too?
So many questions, I know!! Any help greatly appreciated.

From what I can see, you got the answer. Use /etc/hosts or DNS.
That's basically how this web stuff and virtual hosting works, after all.
The web client acquires the IP address of the web server associated with the specified host name, and it is the IP address that is used for the IP connection to the web server, and it is the host name that's passed over the http connection (as data) that's used to select a virtual host.
AFAIK, there's no tool for this, and given you've already Googled around for it, I won't spend any time with that.
I haven't looked at the serveradmin command line to see if adding a virtual host is feasible there from the shell, but the /etc/hosts stuff is trivial.
Get somebody in that knows a little bash, or [go learn it yourself|http://tldp.org/HOWTO/pdf/Bash-Prog-Intro-HOWTO.pdf]. There are [Apple-specific shell and command features|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/IntroCommand_Line_Adminv10.6.pdf] available, too. This stuff could easily be part of a deployment script or makefile script and tied to your version-control system, too.
Or sequence and write up and document the manual steps involved.
And I'd probably punt on the whole wide-open domain-naming stuff if you're not working with the /etc/hosts approach as (with DNS) that's more work than its worth. In either case, I'd likely just use hostnames within an existing domain. Makes mistakes easier to spot when you go into production, too, as you can search for references to your domain name(s) via grep or such, and swap those for relative paths. If you unintentionally embed the customer's domain name(s), that's typically (much) harder to search for.

Licensing-Can I use 10 client version for Web server?

I have a client that is looking to move their web servers from IIS and Windows to OSX server.
My question is, how does the licensing shceme work? Can we use a 10 user version of OSX Server for a web server, or do we need the Unlimited version?

The licensing only applies to connected AFP users, so you can use a 10 Client version without any problems.

CAC or smart card use with Oracle database and web server

I've been asked to smart card (CAC) enable our Oracle web server and database access. We currently use CAC to access many of our other applications.
Where can I find the following information
Oracle software required (and is it an additional cost)
How to integrate Oracle App server (web server) with CAC.
How would I need to change the database users accounts to be CAC enabled rather than database users accounts.

Using Mac email program with Web-based email

Yes you can use gmail using Mail software.
Following is prosidure:
1)-Login to ur gmail A/s
- Go to settings click Forward POP Settings the click Enable POP and click Save.
2) open mail-POP settings
-Type your Email address, Password,
Incoming server:pop.gmail.com
SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
Type and give the Bolded server in specified path
and follow the instruction.

Using files stored on remote web server/cdn as content repository

Is it possible to create a document/asset in WCC that does not have it's physical file stored within the local file system/database but instead is stored in a CDN?
We want to develop a system whereby files that are stored in a CDN are searchable/viewable/downloadable by users. The file metadata (name, description, mime type, size etc) including the URL for the file within the CDN is known. If we could send the metadata to WCC, is it possible to create the asset such that when the user clicks to view the web-viewable format the CDN URL is used and, likewise, when they click to download the video the file URL for the CDN is used.

With the direction given by SnakeEyez02, I was able to solve my issues. Going to get very detailed here....
I was somewhat stuck because I couldn't understand that when you create the site locally, how do you get it to work online. When I created the DB locally and had usernames and pwords to access, it worked fine. I thought that I could 'preview' the remote site in dreamweaver, which can be done, but takes a bit of work around (create new DB connection, add your IP to remote access list, etc). So I was stuck trying to 'preview' my site on my machine, which won't happen because the hostname should be 'localhost' even on the remote. This is because the website AND db are running on 'localhost' because my host (Bluehost) runs off 'localhost'. So I could never 'preview' the remote site due to the db running "locally" on the remote.
With Bluehost, they automatically change a few things:
Bluehost places certain characters in front of any username and the database. So when I export from local and import to remote, my DB went from "TBO_Golf" on the local to "(Bluehost characters)_TBO_Golf" on the remote.
The username and pword combo I was using on my local test had to be changed to match my remote credentials. Bluehost limits the amount of characters on usernames and places specific characters in front of any username. So I had to change it from "(Local username)" to "(bluehost inserted characters)_(username)" and matching password. I could have left it and it would have worked, but every time I wanted to update, I would have to change the username/pword combo every time I went from local to remote and vice versa. So I'd rather save myself the headache and just change the local to match.
So, when I uploaded the site to the remote, the only thing I had to do was update the DB name. I went to the website and 'TA-DA!!!' My dynamic pages now work!

Using Struts Example in IPlanet web Server 6.0

     i am new to struts and i was trying to run the example application shiped along with the binary distribution
     in iplanet webserver 6.0.
     I have extracted the struts-example.war file in to a folder named strutsexamples under my iplanetdocroot\servers\docs\ Using the
     link DeployWebApplications in the admin side of the iplanet application.
     By doing the above steps all the example files are extracted in to the folder iplanetdocroot\servers\docs\strutsexamples directory .

Using IIS 5.0 as web server to App Server 8.0 PE

I am developing a site for a company which has IIS 5.0 as the web server. The sysad there would like to allow only IIS to receive request and hide the App Server internally. I read that one can configure IIS 5.0 to forward request to App Server 7.0. Can you do that in App Server 8.0? How? I have read a post on how to configure Apache to forward request to App Server 8.0 but I don't seem to understand. Sorry, I am very new to the area of App Server and Web server.
My second question, Are there any advantages of configuring IIS 5.0 to accept request and forward any JSP/Servlet request to AP 8.0? How does the performance of HTTP service of AP 8.0 compared to that of IIS 5.0? Are there any performance or security or other issues associating with this option?

Trying to figure out using my macbook as a web server

So I have Apache and PHP enabled and working with MySQL installed. And I know that I am able to access my IP address and my IP address/~myusername online, but it says I don't have permission to do it. What folder or directory is the internet reading files?? I'm used to having a plain UNIX server running Apache that has a public_html folder that contains all of the files accessible by the internet. What's the equivalent on my macbook? Is there one?

Files accessed using only your server name (or address) are in Library/WebServer/Documents
Those accessed from /~myusername are in /users/Sites as mentionned by etresoft.
But Leopard introduced a "mini" problem. You have to verify that in /etc/apache2/users there is a myusername.conf file. If not, copy it from /etc/httpd/users or create it with TextEdit or BBEdit.

Using Mac Mail to view Exchange server account

So my iPhone 3GS has no difficulty syncing e-mails, contacts, calendars from my workplace exchange server, but I can't sync these same workplace e-mails, contacts, etc... with Mac Mail on my home computer. My computer apparently can't recognize the exchange server account, and the IT guy at work says that you can only sync phones to our work server, not home computers. Does that make sense? Or am i just not setting up Mac Mail properly (something like changing the Port #?). I guess I just don't understand how phones can sync but computers can't...

In the world of Microsoft Exchange, that makes sense. iPhones use a network technology called Active Sync, which is designed for mobile devices. Mail uses Exchange Web Services which has more functionality.
If your Exchange server supports a third technology called IMAP, then you can configure Mail to use that instead of EWS.

Mac Pro as a Web Server and Workstation

I'm thinking about getting a better computer, and plan on launching an intensive web app as well as some other web sites. The original plan was to get an xserve or two, and as the need arises add xsan to the setup.
I see that the mac pro is fairly powerful and would make a great server, I could start with a mac pro, then add an xserve and xsan to the setup down the line. What I'd like to know is how it would hold up as a server, while I was using it for work at the same time.. could it handle both and how would it perform?

8core 3.2Ghz
ram as needed min 4gb up to 32gb
separate hard disks for work stuff and served files.
two monitors
*While running:*
photoshop
illustrator
dreamweaver
fireworks
flash
word
flex
3 parallels virtual machines(2 windows 1 linux)
firefox with 200+tabs
4/5 other browsers running.
ftp/mail/calendar and all those other peripheral apps
So to sum up, would using all those apps affect serving a couple websites much, and is there a demo/video/specs of a mac pro(preferably as tricked out as possible) functioning as a server and/or running high end apps doing things like compiling and applying advanced photoshop filters to large files so I can get a sense of performance and speed. It's just hard to visualize what the system could actually handle and numbers don't mean much to me.

It is bad form to use a server as a workstation. You will be running server software, I assume, which is not really client software for which applications are written. You will also be hogging resources one way or the other. You may want to consider a Mini to serve up your website until you can afford an xServe. As far as Xsan, that is really high horse power, and is a good fit for video editing (you need two sxServes and a fiber switch to do an Xsan). You can probably get by with just a RAID attached to the server if you are just hosting web sites, at least in the beginning.

How to use cryptography providers(flexicore) in web-server, i.e.Tomcat ?

in my application, i am sending public key to server, that is tomcat server. and i am using URLConnection class, which is used to send file from client to server. it is working fine.
After that in response server will send public key again to client. but that is not sending. and that is giving error of providers.
i am using flexicore provider , i also add explictily that provider using Security.addProvider , in program but that is not worikng.
so, pls anybody tell me how providers will be support in tomcat
server application.

Using Mac to monitor family web traffic rather than A.Extreme

I have two young sons who have various PSP, PS3, Wii and Nintendo DS Consols, which I want to make wireless with my new Airport Extreme. I colleague has told me I can set up a network via my Mac so I can monitor all their internet usage, plus all the websites they go to goes via my Mac and not directly through the AE.
Is this true? If so, how can I set it up.

I'm not sure I understand... as far as I can tell, after enabling Family Sharing and my wife and I now having different iCloud accounts on our phones, Photo Stream does not appear to be shared between us any more. It appears that only the "Family Photos" album is shared, and we have to manually add photos and videos to that.
One of my favourite features of sharing the same iCloud account across multiple devices was that Photostream synced all our family's photos across all devices, no matter who took them. This appears to be a missing feature in Family Sharing for now -- perhaps Apple wasn't aware this was something people were doing?

Benefits of using POP mail service on Iplanet server over others

I feel unclear about what you're really asking; is it the benefits of the iPlanet POP service as opposed to other POP-enabled mail server products, or is it the benefits of POP as opposed to the IMAP and Webmail services in the iPlanet messaging server you're looking for?
