Using Mac Mail for Gmail - controlling which folders to sync

Using Mac Mail app for my Gmail, is there a way to control which folders I'm syncing with?  I have 90k+ archived messages, which I don't need to have on my desktop.  Is there a way to keep that from syncing?
iMac 27"
Updated to latest version of Mavericks.

Go into the Gmail web portal and open Settings. Go to Labels tab and set it to not show those folders in IMAP.

This sounds like the age old problem with keychain & Safari. I don't know of a way to solve it without using something like 1Password.
The iOS app has it's own built in browser, so it has more control over what gets autofilled. Safari on OS X has an 1Password extension that handles account selection & autofill etc.
Keychain is great in principle, but it quickly falls down when you need tight integration with many ID's & different use cases (work, home etc).
I'd suggest you submit feedback to Apple about your thoughts. I did so years ago about this issue & this is how far we have come (back to the point where me.com synced passwords) :^)

Other tools like lastpass or keypassx may also help if you want to truly segregate password storage, but that doesn't fix autofill, the way around that issue is to dedicate one browser for work.

  • How do I format Mac mail for gmail

How do I format Mac mail for gmail?

You really have no way of controlling how the email will look on someone else's computer. I find, with email, the simpler the better. Block paragraphs (no indent on the first line) and an extra line between paragraphs.
If you want formatting control, I'd recommend using a word processor, printing to PDF and sending that.
    Best of luck.

  • HT1277 I've been using mac mail for years no trouble. mobleme to icloud has ****ed it all away. now I have no email

Why Oh Why has my mac mail stoped working. After years its gone tits up. Keeps saying  MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” rejected the password for user blah blah blah. tried everything. son now ive deleted the thing of the computer can this thing be put right or do I have to go back to using some microsoft sh-te. This all happen after the migration to icloud but slowly it went to rubbish and now nothing.
    Im on OSX 10.6.8

MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” rejected the password
This is doing EXACTLY what I would expect it to.
You need Lion for iCloud which it should warn you when you do the me.com/move routine.

  • Complete IMAP settings to use in Mail for Gmail

    Mail users,
Does anyone know the complete settings for Gmail to work with Mail in Snow Leopard. Sometimes there are advanced settings that need to be adjusted, for complete integration, but I'm not sure how to tinker with them.
Any help would be great or articles you can refer me to.
I'm primarily wanting to stop the creation of IMAP/ folders on the Gmail web interface, perhaps there's a way to use those folders as primary locations, who knows?

The GMail site at Google should provide all the required information you need.

  • Trouble connecting using Mac mail for Office 365

Microsoft says OS 10.9.4 is not supported for an exchange mail account for Mac Mail.  I'm using OSX 10.9.4 and Mac Mail 7.3 and previously had an exchange account but upgraded to Office 365 through my workplace. I was able to send and receive but now the connection doctor is saying the Exchange  account "Could not connect to this Exchange server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the 'Use SSL' checkbox in the Advanced tab.
The problem I've having as well is that the emails are not saved in my sent folder. The only settings that haven't been updated are under the 'Advanced' settings which are: Internal Server Path, Internal Port, External Server Path, External Port.

  • Using mac mail with gmail

what i would like to do is this:
when i delete an incoming mail i would like for it to go to all mail with a tag on it for trash later. i don't want it to go right to trash i want to throw the trash away at my discretion. and if the deleted mail are tagged, it's easier to clean up the all mail folder. also, need this to work with mac mail too.
what are the applicable key settings on both side to do this. i am having trouble getting this to happen. thank you.

Try deleting the non working accounts and re-creating them.

  • Using Mac Mail for BT MyBT mail

Since BT , in february 2014, changed from BT- Yahoo to BT Mail ( My BT) I have had problems using macmail.
What the best solution / imap settings ?

I have been running Mavericks since it was introduced and have had no problems with BT email. I recall that when BT changed its email system a few months ago, some configuration changes were necessary and these were specified by BT. Once the changes were made, everything worked perfectly. I will see if I can find the original instructions from BT and post them here.  Altenatively, take a look at the BT community forum and see if you can find an answer there:
    https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/bd-p/Email
BT come in for a lot of flack but, given the very large number of subscribers, I suspect that most are quite content with what they get. Bear in mind that, apart from cable providers, all ISPs in the UK use a BT line and I doubt that BT facllitate a better service to their competitors than they can provide themselves.
If you really cannot get on with BT email, then it is easy to set up an Outlook email account. These are free and have the advantage that, if you change your ISP, you do not have to change your email address. Actually, I recall that you can keep your BT email address if you move away from BT. However, you have to log in something like once a month to keep it active. This sounds easy except that you have to do this by dial-up, and iMacs, at least, do not have dial-up modems. Hmm, maybe I'll think again about how good BT is!

  • Can't log into Gmail using Mac Mail client

Wow, after upgrading Lion for iCloud and upgrading my iPad2 for IOS5, I can no longer get Gmail on either one using Mac Mail as the client. I get a little triangular caution symbol next to the Gmail account in Mac Mail.  I tried deleting the account and recreating it, and when the account setup wizard tries to connect, I get the following:
"Logging in to the Google IMAP server "imap.gmail.com" failed.  Make sure the username and password you entered are correct then click Continue.  If the information isn't correct, you cannot receive messages"
This doesn't make any sense, since the account has always worked in the past.  Simultaneous to that, I have started having the same problem on the iPad, which never had trouble logging in before either.
    Anybody else encountering this?

Please disregard, I've figured out the problem. In case it could help someone else, when asked for the User Name, you have to include the "@gmail.com" where with Apple Mail, you don't have to.

i have macbook 5.2 and i am using Mac OS 10.5.8 . which one is good for me to upgrade and how to do that..plz help me

You have a 13" Early or Mid 2009 MacBook. Either one can run OS X Mavericks with enough RAM, 2 GB minimum. But first you will need to update to OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 so that you have the Mac App Store installed on your MacBook
    Buy this from apple;
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Then download and update with this update combo;
OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 v1.1 update combo
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
After this you will have the Mac App Store on your MacBook and you should be able to download and install OS X Mavericks for free!
    Your MacBook must meet these minimum tech specs to run Mavericks;

  • Pop gmail account using Mac Mail has stopped receiving email.

I have two pop gmail accounts using Mac Mail.  One has stopped receiving email while one is fine.  Both are set up exactly the same.  Any idea how to fix this issue?

I saw on Yahoo's site the following:
    http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-40.html
    Does that address your problem?
I see you're using the UK version and that there's no similar page on the Yahoo UK site but perhaps it helps anyway. Have a look here as well: http://help.yahoo.com/l/uk/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/pop/pop-30.html

  • Mac Mail and Gmail Sync

Firstly, I'm posting this in the iCal section because there's not a dedicated Mail support section, and I think my question may be similar to some iCal concerns.
With the advent of 10.6, I know it's now possible to sync your "Contacts" contained within your Mac address book with Gmail. I also know that for some time it has been possible to import your Gmail contacts to Mac Mail.
My question considers the reverse - that is, it is possible to export your Mac Mail contacts to Gmail, and even better, possibly keep them synced. Often, Mail contacts and Address Book contacts are not one and the same. I'm specifically referring to the email addresses and names that Mail autocompletes when you type in the "To:" or "Cc:" fields. I only have 100 contacts in my address book; I know I have many more stored somewhere within Mail. As of now, however, I am unable to find them and unable to use them when using Gmail on the web. It would be great to be able to write an email to a new address in either Mail or Gmail, and be able to bring it up later from a different computer.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Kevin

It sounds like you've got Gmail set up in Mail on Leopard as a POP account. This would cause problems with how it synchronizes with other clients (like your iPhone) accessing the same mail account. The iPhone by default uses IMAP for Gmail access, which is what you should use if you are going to access Gmail with more than one client on a regular basis.
Once that is done, make sure you use the recommended settings for Apple Mail in order for your Gmail account to behave properly.
Lastly you should 'map' your folders so that Mail uses your Gmail folders for it's like folders. Using your Sent folder issue as an example, once you've set up Gmail to use IMAP you'll see a folder named [Gmail]/Sent. Click on that folder and go to the menu Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Sent. That folder will disappear from the folder pane and when you click on the Sent folder, the items in your Gmail Sent folder will now show up.
Edit: I just noticed that you say your MBP is using Snow Leopard. The settings should be exactly the same, but in the future you should post your questions about Snow Leopard (10.6) in the Snow Leopard forum.
