Using Mac US keyboard on windows

Hello,
I'm used to using my macbook keyboard. Yet I now need to use a pc with a standard pc keyboard. Like in mac you can set the keyboard to be a windows keyboard (indifferently from what is written on the keyboard) can you do the same for windows and set it to act like a mac keyboard?
Primarily with the mac keyboard i used to get the sqrt sign pressing alt and v. This doesn't work on the windows keyboard and i couldn't find shortcuts for these mathematical characters.

Hi Simpatico,
you can use the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator for that: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx

  • Mac Slim keyboard and Windows

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there is a way to activate the keys that would usually work if I hit the "NUM" lock key. I've never used a mac and I bought the keyboard and mouse cause I like it better then anyone I have at work. Can anyone tell me how to activate them? Is there something I need to hit?
    Thanks!

In the future, please search the discussions before posting, as there's already an existing thread not too far down in this forum that deals with the keyboard and Windows.

Either way, since there are no Windows drivers for the keyboard, currently there's probably no way to accomplish what you're looking for.

  • MacPro Dual Use--Mac OS X and Windows?

I'm planning to purchase 2 MacPro stations for our school next year, however, I need some advice. The workstation will be used mostly for video editing--Final Cut Pro and other Mac OS X related activities, however, we need to run Windows-based applications such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD once every now and then. Furthermore, SolidWorks requires a robust video card. The software maker recommends Quadro FX cards. At present there is only one Quadro FX card available for the MacPro; it's price, however, is too high for us. Is it possible to run Mac OS X with the video card that comes installed with the MacPro when it ships and also boot up in Window XP or Vista via BootCamp using a second windows-only video card that would be specially suited to handle 3D modelling (SolidWorks) in a Windows environment? This would save me the need to purchase 2 Mac boxes and 2 Windows boxes. What difficulties would I encounter with the setup described above? Do you have any other recommendations as to what I could do? I'm also hearing rumors that Apple is planning to upgrade its MacPro workstation with possible new Quadro FX cards. Any other ideas?

If you use Boot Camp to create a Windows boot partition, then you can use any Windows compatible PCI-Express video card for Windows, although you will have to install your own Windows drivers because Boot Camp only has drivers for the three Apple video cards available for the Mac Pro. Obviously this would have to be installed as a second video card.
However, you should check with SolidWorks tech support about the usability of the 7300GT or ATI X1900 cards. The latter is quite suitable for the fastest games and may be suitable for use with SolidWorks.

  • How legal use Mac System Fonts on Windows? (eula truly invalid in Europe)?

How can i legal use Mac OS 7 or X System Fonts on Windows?
I plan to buy an old broken LC / Quadra or used Mac OS X CD and copy the Mac OS System Fonts to the Windows Machine.
I dont't understand the Mac OS X eula and can't find the Mac OS 7 eula on the web.
I heared the Apple Mac OS eula is invalid and irrelevant in europe.
(incompatible with european antitrust and consumer protection law)
PS: I know already, how i can convert dfont to truetype. It's no technical problem.

Just save.  There is no difference in files between platforms.
There are some Windows-centric font formats that aren't portable, by any OpenType or TrueType font will be portable between platforms.

  • Using mac's keyboard

a while back i used this very keyboard to play the drum kits on garageband. since then i have lost all memory of what allowed me to do that. anyone wanna clue a guy in?

    Hi ssj300,
You should look at some of the cool add-ons available in the repository. There a ton in there that will do what you asking. ''Customizable Shortcuts'' is one that comes to mind, but I'm sure there are several that will meet your needs. It really comes down to preference.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Using an AZERTY keyboard with Windows 7 via parallels

Hi, really hope you can help, its very frustrating! I've got a macbook (10.6) with a french azerty keyboard. Its all fine using applications directly on the mac but when i use windows 7 via parallels, I don't get the correct symbols eg the button to the left of the 1 key is @ (or a # when shift is pressed as well)
I've tried changing the language to all the different french options eg canadian, moroccan etc but none of them have the correct layout
thanks in advance for any replies/advice

You probably need to change the keyboard layout in Windows
From his reference to French Moroccan I suspect he has already tried that. The problem may be that no Windows layout exactly matches the Mac layout, as is the case with several languages. But maybe there is a work-around short of someone having to create a Windows custom keyboard layout.

  • Using an Apple Keyboard in Windows

So it's a pretty commonly known issue that the function keys on the Apple Wireless keyboard don't do a thing in Windows. Is there some way. I'm using Windows 8.1 on an Windows PC, not a Mac, so I don't have access to the Boot Camp drivers. Is there some workaround? I'd really really like them to behave completely normally and use the Windows GUI for volume selection and music controls.
It seems pretty sub par that I've payed for a keyboard that really should work fine on Windows but that is missing basic functionality. I don't know if the problem is being caused on Microsoft's or Apple's end, though I suspect either could fix it easily and make the keyboard work with full functionality on connection without any hassle.
I found an install link to the Apple Wireless Keyboard drivers that I believe come with bootcamp and did that but the drivers are now just sitting in Device Manager not doing anything. To be more specific, in Device Manager, under Bluetooth there is 'Apple Wireless Keyboard' but under Keyboards is 'HID Keyboard Device' which is the default driver Windows appears to be using.
So yeah, I'd love some help.
    Thanks

Yes..I know.   There are still people buying Apple devices for use with Windows and I want Google searches to find this page.  Apple doesn't support these devices outside of Boot Camp.  And after using Boot Camp for years, I can tell you they don't work too well in Boot Camp either.  Apple's crappy drivers were designed to paint Windows in the palest light possible.  It was a cheap charlatan's trick.
Apple sure has changed recently.  I remember a time when Mac Pro's had tons of expansion capabilities and Mac Book Pros had great graphics.  iPhones were small and elegant, not the of Android shape of today - an overused bar of soap.  I remember a time when iPad was the future of computing...not a the quickly stagnant coffee table computer with shrinking sales - the Netbook of this decade.  My Apple keyboard is the last Apple product I'm still using...my fingers still like it despite the failings.  But it too is starting to wear on me.  Why can't Apple get even this right?  A simple keyboard?  It's depressing.

  • What are the advantages of using Mac OS X over Windows 7?

    Thank you.

I just would like to know what makes a windows 7's user willing to switch to Mac OS.
Everything we say that Mac OS X does better will sound like fanboy hollow self serving praise of Mac OS X, because based on the written description you will be thinking to yourself that Windows can do that.  And a description that is very detailed will bore you (and everyone else) to sleep.
You really need to spend time playing with Mac OS X.  If there is an Apple Store near you, go in, and spend several hours playing with one (or several) Macs over several days/weekends.  As long as the store is not too crowded the store staff will let you play as long as you like.  They will help you play or go away if you ask nicely.  I've spent hours in a Apple Stores, sometimes just playing, surfing, comparing, and sometimes talking to the staff when one wonders over and asks if they can help me.
As to why some people switch.  Sometimes it is frustration with Windows.  Sometimes it is the bloatware installed on the systems by the manufactures that the users do not know how to get rid of.  Sometimes it is the basic App Suite, such as iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, etc... (iMovie really does make it very easy to generate family home movies).  Sometimes it is running away from the constant Malware and paying over and over again for an anti-virus package (although I'm told the stuff shipped with Windows these days is pretty good).  Sometimes it is because a family member forced it on them (Mac using kids that are frustrated trying to support Mom and Dad; Mom being 300 miles away can be a bummer with the system is out of service).  Sometimes they get a iPod/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and see how nicely it works, and start to wonder if maybe other Apple produces are this well made (iPod/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touchs are a gateway drug).
There are as many reasons for why people switch as there are people that have switched.
If you wish to find out if you have a reason, you really need to play with the Mac for an extended period of time and see if it suits you.  If it doesn't and you still feel like you need a change of pace, try a Linux distribution (Ubuntu for example).

  • How to use Mac formatted ipod in windows

    Hey all,
I'm trying to transfer files i backed up to my ipod to my windows laptop but it's asking me to format the ipod first correct me if im wrong but won't that wipe out all the info in the ipod and if so is there a work around i wanna transfer docs/pics/tunes to my pc as my mac is in for repairs. Any thoughts?

If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • How could i use mac look & feel in windows?

as it's restricted by licenses issues
    and no specific lib available
    anybody knows?
    thx
    max

Well, actually the Mac look and feel available in Apple's standard JVM is native to the OS and may not work correctly under OSes other than OS X.
If what you are looking for is a high quality look and feel package, then consider JGoodies Looks(at www.jgoodies.com). Looks is free and open source. There's also a very elegant, but commercial, look and feel called the Alloy Look and Feel (take a look at www.incors.com.)

  • How to switch two languages in wireless keyboard in window 7 in imac?

I bought Imac in Canada and bought wireless keyboard which has Korean and English in Korea. Now I connect and use English Korean keyboard in OS X  succesfully. But I can't use English Korean keyboard in window 7 in Bootcamp.. The English Korean keyboard is already connected but can't type Korean. I tried command and space bar, and alt key when I want to switch that. But It just doesn't work. Please let me know how I can use Korean in my keyboard. Thanks

That is obviously a point of view that many would share. However, it does not really answer the question :-).
When using multiple Desktops with many open apps using Cmd + Tab can require a lot of keystrokes - even if you use Cmd + Shift + Tab to move backwards.

  • Using mac keyboard on Windows, how to get all CS shortcuts working like on OSX?

    Hi!
Firstly, thanks all for any tips/help, it's very much appreciated!
My girlfriend is using a mac at work to design with CS 5. At home she has a windows 7 laptop though.
It seems one of the biggest issues is that the shortcuts aren't working the same, which reduces her productivity so much that it does not make any sense to work from home.
So we still have one of the fancy apple USB keyboards at home and I was wondering if it's possible to get CS working with an apple keyboard under windows so that she can use the same shortcuts which she uses at work with CS5 under OSX?
Thanks for your help in advance!
    Thomas

Using a Mac keyboard for the PC won't help. It will probably map the command key to the Windows key. Bob's answer is right on the money. She has to retrain her muscle memory, when at home use control, when at work use command.

  • Problems with using non usa keyboard (Mac OS X 10.6.7)

    Hi,
I have MacBook Pro, (Mac OS X version 10.6.7), slovenian keyboard and when i type in Code View or Design View one of slovenian characters (š, č, ć , đ, ž) it is not written correctly. They are all written correctly if i for example write them in Find Window (Edit --> Find and Replace) etc. This is extremly annoying and i don't know what to do. I don't have similar problem with any of other mac programs only with macromedia ones. Any suggestions what can i do?
Thank you in advance for any answers.

Is the language (regional time zones and languages) correctly set?  If not then you need to make sure it is Slovenian to matcvh your keyboard.
It is my experience that you can't mix and match the keyboards.  For example, you can't use US standard Keyboard on a UK set system because the currency and date formats are all different in these two countries and so the pound sign £ and # will interefere with your work.  This is just one example but I am sure there are many.  The puctuation marks are all mixed up etc etc.

  • Using ALT+cursor function of apple keyboard for windows program

Not sure where to ask this question, but here goes. My company uses a web based transportation routing program I can access from my home computer, (which is a Mac using Mac, not windows).
Using the program requires the ability to often select or deselect lines from a group of lines to send to be routed. Using a Microsoft keyboard I would simply press ALT and then select with the cursor the lines I want. When I am using my apple keyboard this does not work.
I know that the command key takes the place of the ALT key, so you would think that I would simply press Command and select with the cursor, but this does not work. Therefore all I can do is select all or none.
Anyone have a idea of another combination of keys that will work for this?
    Thanks
I am using the standard apple keyboard with the numeric keys

Not sure why that isn't working. I have a page displaying below from the Apple Support website, with three different lines selected:
The purple highlighted lines are all selected independently of one another. Maybe it is the type of webpage or data?
