Using macbook as a desktop...is it dangerous?

my doubt is about the battery life,if i use macbook with the battery in and also with the power adapter; is it a risk for the battery?should i use the macbook withouth the battery inserted and only with power cable?
Thank's!

No, you should always leave the battery in. The reason is that under peak load the MacBook actually require more power than the power adapter can provide and it gets the added power from the battery. if you remove the battery the processor will step down in speed… to 1GHz I believe.
While there is no problem with using your MacBook as a desktop, many of us do, just be mindful to use your battery regularly. The more it's used the better it will stay in top condition. And remember to calibrate around one a month.
You may want to read Apple's battery web pages for more information…

  • Have HP 4580 all in one and it worked excellent before Lion.  Could print using Windows on desktop and using Macbook Pro.

Before upgrading to Lion on my MacBook Pro I could print on the HP C4580 All in One using HP Desktop with Windows 7 and using MacBook Pro with no problems.  I upgraded to Lion now can only print when I shut down and restart my MacBook.  If using the desktop or the Microsoft Office on my MacBook it kicks the printer offline and I have to restart my laptop.  I called Apple and they said they did not support 3rd party software.  I had previously purchased the printer through Apple with a desktop.  I installed the new driver from HP and removed it, reinstalled.  Guess what, same problem.  Can anyone tell me how to make lion work.  Apple will not provide help.  Have a iPad and with a small app for $7.00 it prints great.  HELP

You must work for Apple.  Contacted the vendor downloaded their app.  Everytime I open Microsoft Office for Mac it kicks printer off line and if I print from a Windows computer (which printer works perfect) it kicks printer off line.  If I restart Mac it will print the item in the printer.  Don't care what Apple says, prior to loading Lion never had any problems.  Sounds as if Apple programers goofed up and just don't want to admit it and correct their problem. Your comments did not solve any problems, asking for help not Apple support.

  • HT201380 I AM USING MACBOOK PRO RETINA. DO I NEED TO INSTALL REMOTE DESKTOP 3.7.1 ?

    Hi,
i am using MacBook Pro Retina 15 , 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7.
Can anyone tell me about Remote Desktop Client Update 3.7.1 neccessary to install in my MacBook pro Please

    Hi
Apple Remote Desktop is part of your OS and just as other system updates you should install it as it fixes some issues as listed here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1710
Apple Remote Desktop is not a virus, malware or anything else that might be seen as 'nastyware'. As with any update you should follow Apple's advice prior to running the update and make sure you have a full and complete backup of any data you can't do without.

  • Can I use my macbook as a desktop

Can I use my macbook as a desktop in my office, connecting it to bigger screen and with a keyboard?
How it will work. I know IBM laptops have a dock devise, does anything like that exists on Mac?
    Thanks

So what you do is close it up let it suspend and then wake it up with the bluetooth device. Its a possibility the one i use, maybe there are better ones.
If left open you can have 2 screens for more desktop space. I use mine this way I have some stuff on one and other stuff on the internal screen.
Other thing i recomend you is to take of the battery if you are going to have all day on. Just connect it to the power and that way the battery doesnt suffer.
Please do not take the battery out. The MacBook is designed to have the battery installed and it will not suffer as long as you calibrate once a month.
If you take the battery out this will happen.

  • Is it dangerous using macbook pro while charging?

Hi,did anyone experienced any electric issue when using macbook pro unibody while charging? When I use it during the recharge process the electricity pass trough my body.I can say that because one day when I was using it (with the hands on the keyboard) my girlfriend came and touched my face moving her hands on my cheeks and I felt a weird sensation like a vibration on my face so I unplugged the power cord leaving the hands on the keyboard (with palms near the trackpad) and I didnt feel it anymore. It is known that the electric fields can cause cancer.Am I in danger?I don't think it is a good thing that electricity pass trough my body anyway. There is any way to fix this problem?(a part of not using it while connected to the wall charger).Thank you

Some people are more sensative to EMF's then others. If there is a bad connection in your house or in your computer, then you may experience this more then others.
My guess is your house may have some faulty wiring somewhere and needs to be addressed. Get an EMF detector and see if you get spikes in the area of where your plug in your computer. Or rather, call an electrician who can check for these spikes around your house. Some houses, especially older ones, will have electrical problems, but even newer ones can have these since someitmes the laborer who installed it didn't know what they were doing or didn't bother checking.
get a surge protector for your electronics, especially your computer deivces.

  • Bought Used macbook pro, don't have administrator password and don't have the OS disc. Is there a way I can reset or delete the password?

I recently bought a used macbook pro. I can pretty much do everything I need on it until I want to change setting and such things. Then it asks me for an administrator password which I do not know or have. On top of that I do not have the OS disc either. Is there a way I can SAFELY reset or delete the password so I can set my own without the possibility of screwing thing up. LIke I said I can do most anything. I figured this out when attempting to tether it to my smartphone for internet access (I do all the time from my desktop but my desktop is a PC so things are a little different) I am a very new mac user, I have always been a devoted PC user until now. I have to say I am really loving my macbook pro I may just stick with mac from now on (if I can get this problem figured out without too much stress.
I am looking for the safest and best way to fix this issue where nothing I do would mess up the laptop. I can use it now and I do not want that to change, I just want to be able to change my setting and set a password of my own. PLEASE HELP, THANX!

    Hi
There actually is a slightly easier way in OS X 10.5 or greater.
    1. Start up in single-user mode (hold Command-S as the computer starts up).
    2. Type: mount -uw /
    3. Press Return.
    4. Type this:
    passwd (user's short name)
Replace "(user's short name)" with the short name of the user account whose password you wish to reset. If you are not sure what the account name is, you can get a list of user names by typing: ls /Users
    5. Press Return.
    6. Enter a new user password.
    7. Press Return.
    8. Type: reboot
    9. Press Return.

  • Hi, how do I get my calendar to update across Macbook and iMac Desktop?

I have a Macbook and an iMac Intel desktop.
I want to use iCal on my desktop so that my macbook can be updated at the the same time. How do I do this?
If anyone has any ideas how I can also access the same docs online from both computers (iMac not big enough to run iCloud) I would also be grateful.
    Many thanks...
    Neil

Prior to iCloud being available I used an app called SyncTogether with pretty good success. While it's not as reliable as iCloud it did work.

  • A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
    1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
    2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
    3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?
    Thanks
    Keith

    1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
    2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
    3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.
    Good Luck

  • Set up home sharing between macbook pro and desktop pc. tried to sync music in library but ipod is not syncing the library. why not?

I set up homesharing between macbook pro and desktop pc.  I have attempted to sync songs on my mac and pc, but the ipod will not sync the full library.  why not?

    Hey harold WD!
You will want to consolidate your entire library onto one computer using Home Sharing in order to sync all of these items onto your iPod. Use the following article to help you accomplish this:

  • Ipad or used macbook?

So we have a family desktop and i don't have a laptop or anything so i was getting ready to purchase an ipad because i didin't want to shell out 1000 buks for a new macbook and i figured an ipad would be better than a 500 dollar pc netbook thing. before i was going to buy it though i searched used macbooks to see if there was a cheap used macbook i could buy. I found a lot of Macbook 13.3" 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, for a bout 500 buks used. I don't really know anything baout this computer and what ilife it comes with and os and what os it can be upgraded to. basically i am looking for all you smart people out there to give me some information and also opinions on buying this or an ipad2. by the way i am in 9th grade if that would change any opinions.

I'd go with a laptop not an iPad for school but instead of purchasing used from an unknown source, check out Apple's refurbished Macs first. If you are looking at Craisglist or eBay for a used Mac, you could be throwing your $$ away. You really don't know what you are getting.
If you are going to buy used then better to purchase a Mac from Apple so you have the one year limited warranty.

If you purchase an iPad you will need a computer to activate, update, sync, and restore with.

No, that's not true. This is one of the 'benefits' of Lion (if you want to see it that way). The OS is on a separate partition and you can reinstall the OS without another physical drive.
What you do is reboot the computer while holding down the 'option' key. From the list of disks that show up (you can release the 'option' key now), choose 'Recovery HD'.
When you get to what looks like a Desktop, choose 'Reinstall OS X Lion'.  Shortly after this, you will get asked for your Apple ID. Put your own Apple ID in the box and everything should proceed smoothly from there.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

How can i copy files from one external hard drive to another using macbook pro with retina display?

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • Can I move my iTunes music to a device with a different Apple ID using iTunes library on desktop?

I'm going to be getting a new iPhone real soon and I'm going to create a new Apple ID. The one that I'm currently using now will be handed over to another with respected agreements. I was just wondering if I could still move the music purchases with this ID to my phone that will have a different one using iTunes library on desktop.
    Possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. No "yeah, I have this problem too" posts because that is completely unhelpful, thank you.

You can move the song files into a different iTunes library and sync them to a new device, but they will remain associated with the original Apple ID.
