using macbook in clamshell mode?

Yes, if you've an external display, keyboard and mouse. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131.
That seems to be the mode I run in 99% of my days and night now that I bought an external display (and keyboard and Magic Trackpad).

  • Unresponsive MacBook in clamshell mode

My morning routine no longer works. Every day I wake up and turn on my MacBook that is connected to a monitor, firewire external hdd, usb printer, and speaker. After it has booted, I open Mail. Once that is loaded and my Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad are working, I close the MacBook into clamshell mode, touch the touchpad, and wait for it to wake back up. Once awake and reconnected to wifi, I open Chrome and start my day.
For some reason, my MacBook is now unresponsive once I enter clamshell mode. That is, after I close it and wake it back up through my touchpad, I can no longer do anything on my MacBook. It is NOT frozen and the cursor still moves around the screen when I move on the Bluetooth trackpad. But clicking doesn't open any applications or register anything. The image is static except for my cursor moving around. The clock time does not advance and no keyboard shortcuts do anything. The screen still goes to sleep after a bit and is wakened by touching the touchpad. But nothing else registers.
This morning, I left it on for a while and the cursor turned into 2 eyes. Then it went back to a cursor. It even turned into a spinning beach ball for a moment.
Only solution is to open the clamshell to force shutdown. If I leave the MacBook open, everything works fine. That is how I got through work yesterday. But today, the clamshell problem persists.
Any ideas as to why this would start happening after years of successfully using clamshell mode?
    Specs:
20007 Black MacBook 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo (3,1), 128 GB SSD and 4 GB RAM, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

This is easy to do and does not require an external keyboard or mouse. Before you close the MacBook set your energy savings time to however long you want the computer to stay awake. Then close the lid and you will be able to wake the MacBook with only the remote and it will stay awake for the period you have set in energy saver. Use the menu button to awaken it and the push it again to start front row If you wish you can set the energy saver to never sleep and it would stay on indefinitely once you wake it with the remote.

  • Macbook Pro clamshell mode issues!

    Hi All
    I have a 15inch late 2011 i7 MBP running Lion, I'm using it like a mini desktop on a stand/closed &
hooked upto a DELL 2408WFP monitor.
Problem is, behaviour is eratic especially after waking from sleep. Desktop image will have reverted to plain grey, windows
will shift position etc etc & worst case it wont wake to the external moitor or just hang!
Anyone else having the same kind of problems or miracle cure ??????
After upgrading from an old G4 mirror door running Tiger which all ran super smooth, my experience with everything
new has been terrible! Lion seems more like a Skunk !!
    Cheers
    Saul

Anyway I don't see how this is relevant to my current predicament.
If you intend to use the MBP as a portable computer on occasion, running it on battery power when you do, you won't need to worry about your original strident objection to the AC power requirement for clamshell mode:
There is no denying that this will ruin the battery life on my MBP because it will remain plugged in 24x7.
Of course if the machine were to remain plugged in all the time, it wouldn't make the slightest difference to you if its battery was ruined. You'd never need the battery.
So use it in clamshell mode most of the time, and once a month, unplug it, run the battery down and recalibrate it. You will be within the letter of Apple's advice on managing the battery, and you'll have nothing to worry about. It's only if you can't manage this minimal inconvenience that you'll have to regret your decision to buy a MBP instead of a Mini.
An anti-sleep hack won't turn off the built-in display when it's closed, as clamshell mode does, and it may prevent the machine from going to sleep for its own protection if it ever overheats, which is more likely with the display closed than open.

  • Using RMBP in clamshell mode w/ Remote App music stops

    Hi,
I've got my MacBook Pro connected to the internal DAC in my Peachtree Audio nova125 integrated stereo amplifier via USB. This allows me play music in iTunes on my MacBook Pro via my stereo speakers.
    Excellent, but there's a problem...
I keep the MacBook Pro closed (I.e. It's running in clamshell mode) and use the Apple Remote app from my iPad to access my iTunes library and play music on the MacBook Pro.
This works great for about 20 seconds and then the music stops.
If I stay in the Remote App on the iPad I observe the screen refresh when the music stops, like the Remote App is re-connecting to iTunes. If I close the Remote app or switch to a different iPad app the same thing happens... The music keeps going for about 20 seconds and then stops.
After the music stops, when the Remote app screen refreshes if I left the the Remote app open, or when I re-open the Remote app if I closed it or switched to a different iPad app... The screens comes back with the same view of my iTunes library it had before, with the same song selected and paused at the same spot it stopped at.
If I then press play the music starts again and the cycle repeats.
    Why?
    This is clearly a flaw.
I want the music to keep playing until I go back into the Remote App (or open the MacBook Pro and go to iTunes directly) and stop it.
Any insights as to why this is happening and how to make it work properly would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

As you can see no one has provided any info here, but I'll post what I've learned in the hopes it may help you.
Short answer: According to a local Apple Store genius, Apple does not support running a RMBP w Mavericks in clamshell mode unless the RMBP is connected to an external display.
    Other info:
-I tried selecting the "Prevent App Nap" checkbox in iTunes.app>Get Info, but this doesn't make it work.
-I also Googled some info that stated there's a 3rd party app available you could install that might/should make it work, but it sounded like an inelegant solution so I didn't try it and don't have any more info on that.
-Now I either plug the RMBP into my TV via HDMI if I want to run it in clamshell, or if I don't mind leaving the RMBP open I just turn on the iTunes visualizer in full screen mode.
    I hope this helps.

  • Using macbookpro in clamshell mode with Ipod touch as mouse/keyboard

I have a 2G ipod Touch and a Macbook Pro laptop (purchased 12/2009). I recently connected my MBP to my Samsung LCD HD TV. I am able to get the picture to work correctly (mirrored the displays). But i was sitting on my couch wondering how to manipulate the screen without using the laptop keyboard/touch pad...Then i found out that the itouch has an APP called Air Mouse PRO and your itouch can be used as a keyboard/touchpad for your computer.
This works great, until i tried to close the lid and put my MBP in "clamshell mode" and the MBP will just go to sleep! there is no way of having the MBP be responsive to the itouch while in clamshell mode.
My question is, " is there a way to wake up the MBP while in clamshell mode?" remember that the connection i have with the itouch is infrared and it is unresponsive while in clamshell mode.

I really don't use Rowmote much any more. I turned my old MBP into a media center and control it with Remote Buddy and an Apple remote. While I can do the same thing with Rowmote, it's easier with Remote Buddy. You can't move the pointer around the screen with it, but it controls media applications amazingly well for using something with only six buttons. http://www.iospirit.com/products/remotebuddy/

  • HT1338 early 2012 macbook air clamshell mode not working after mountain lion update

Can't make 2012 MBA 13" work in clamshell mode after updating to Mountain Lion.  All peripheral devices are connected, as is AC power.  Closing lid causes external monitor to enter sleep mode (presumably, the MBA is going to sleep as well).
Power settings are set to stay awake when on AC power.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
The two may be linked as there is a common support app called IMAgent that helps with both Messages and FaceTime.
    Shut down both apps.
With the Finder as the Front App > use the Go Menu > Hold down ALT key and select Library.
In the Library find and open th Preferences Folder
Find com.apple.IMAgent.plist and drag it to the Trash
Before restarting the App now go to Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities.
Find imagent (it  is in lower case).
Highlight and use the Quit button.
    Now restart the app(s).
This will recreate the .plist  from defaults.

Command-F1 invokes screen mirroring. Does that work? Otherwise you could do a network install of OS X.

  • HT3131 Why doesn't Apple mention using the Display control panel's "Arrange" feature to move the menu from the Macbook's display to the EXTERNAL display? THAT'S the real answer to make Clamshell mode work, but it's not mentioned in any Apple documentation

After a recent OS update, Clamshell mode quit working. I couldn't find any Apple documentation
that would help. So many people were stabbing around in the dark, until I finally found the following information
that is lacking from any Apple documentation that I've been able to find.
Here's what I found to be the most helpful:
Forcing a MacBook to use the External Monitor:
I tried about everything: Rebooting, switching off completely, removing and inserting the Thunderbolt->HDMI adapter etc.
The only thing that finally worked was the following:
    1. Take it out of the dock and connect to Power and HDMI to the TV.
Shut down the Mac. Turn it on and close the lid. It will now boot up on the external screen.
Log onto the Mac, and put it in sleep mode (Option-Command-Eject).
Put it back into the dock and wake it up with the spacebar.
It should be OK now... until the next update...
Note: One indication that you’re going to have extreme trouble with this is when (occasionally and without reason) the Mirroring Options icon shows up on the top icon bar.
    Other useful commands:
“Command + F1” puts PC in Two-Screen MIRROR mode.
If it’s REALLY being stubborn, do the following (Clamshell Must be open
    to see the arrangement tab.):
In System Preferences > Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor (Yes, I know, it’s hard to grab ahold of it...) That will make your EXTERNAL monitor your main screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV, make sure it’s asleep (Option+Command+Eject buttons) or your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.

  • Using macbook air in clamshell mode

I have a MBA running Lion, and when I try to use it in clamshell mode, the screen on the external monitor doesn't do anything. There is a Logitech USB keyboard and mouse plugged in, but nothing happens when I move the mouse or type on the keyboard when the MBA is closed. I've read that this SHOULD work, but I'm not having any luck. Ideas?

    Hi
This is a low-tech solution and way out of the time-frame, but, because this is the discussion that surfaced when I went looking for a solution to the problem, I'm going to add to the discussion.
I'm a low-tech but persistent person so when all the instructions and advice didn't work and my external monitor screen went black 10 seconds after closing MacBook air cover, I looked again at the instruction which said, with computer turned on, connect external monitor and then close lid on MBA.  Humh, what it should say is with POWER SOURCE CONNECTED and computers turned on, connect external monitor and then close lid.
    Happy person

  • Macbook Pro 2011 clamshell mode broken by latest software update?

After installing the latest MacBook Pro software update and EFI update through Software Update in the evening May 4, I am unable to enter clamshell mode any more. It used to work before. After waking up in the clamshell mode, the machine promptly goes back to sleep. On subsequent attempts to wake up the system, the laptop itself appears to wake up (at least the sleep light stops blinking) but the display does not even wake up. I can still work with external dsisplay with the lid open but this is highly annoying. I have reset the PRAM with no effect. The machine is a 2011 MBP, 15" inch, 2.2 GHz quad i7. Keyboard and mouse are wireless Microsoft desktop but the problem is also present with wired peripherals.
Does anyone else see this problem after installing the latest patch?

Okay, I'll add my frustration here as well.
I've had this problem too, and more noticable since the 1.4 update.
I posted a thread similar to this here.
But I'll just copy over what my main problem was...
Whenever I plug my computer into my Cinema Display (with the computer closed) it won't wake up fully. The status light will come on, any external hard drives will spin up, but the display won't turn on and the computer will go back to sleep.
I have to restart the computer manually to get it to work normally, and if I disconnect it while it's between the sleep and wake mode and try to open it, the backlight will come on but the screen will remain black, causing me to have to force restart it.
This is in addition to my first problem with the backlit keyboard not coming on automatically after sleep, which was temporarily fixed by resetting the SMC, but it goes back to the problem after a week or so.
What could be causing either of these problems? Could it have something to do with BootCamp since I have it installed, or is there a defect?
I would bring it back to Apple, but there's a small dent in the front right corner, and I'm afraid they would deny any problem I have.
I took my MacBook Pro (2011, i7 2.2, 17") into the Apple Store on Monday, and after about an hour of attempting to replicate the problem with a different monitor, there was only one time where there was any sort of problem.
The employee told me to see if there will be a fix, or otherwise they will replace the logic board for me.
One thing I'd like to add as a note...
It seems that the problem is more prominent when I have my computer with everything on it as usual. As in, before I took it to the Apple Store I performed a clean install of OS X, and that may be related to how bad the problem is, any opinions?
I had attempted at reinstalling OS X from a Time Machine Backup, but the problems continued shortly after completetion. In addition to this, I clean installed OS X, and manually reloaded my applications and media, hoping that the problem had stemmed from some kind of broken file system that could be repaired by a new install.
But no matter how I do it, the problem comes back despite the method. It is really something I want fixed, as I pretty much only use it in clamshell mode when home...

  • HT3131 can i turn my computer on and off in clamshell mode will useing with a thurderbolt display?

I have an early 2011 mackbook pro 17inch and love using it in clamshell mode with my thunderbolt display.  Is there a way to turn power on and off with a thunderbolt display?
    regards,
    floyd.

I have my Power Nap enabled but my sleep is still an option along with restart or shutdown when I click on the little Apple.
When I click sleep it puts everything to sleep as if turned off except it activates when I touch my keyboard and comes on again with everything up.
My external Lacie SSD does everything the same as the computer and monitors.
Except it shuts all the way off and on.
    Not good I don't think.
If it's not good for internal SSD to be turned on and off, I expect it to be not good for external SSD either.

  • External Display won't work in clamshell mode

Hi - I can't get my external display to work with the MacBook in clamshell mode - It works fine with the lid open.
I'm using it with the apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
I've obviously changed a setting without realising - can anyone help.
    Thank You.

Sorry - I've now got it to work.
I don't know how - I just went through all the settings one by one, switched them off and back on again and it now works - I have to assume it is 'user error' but I can't work out which bit

  • How to switch on MacBookPro monitor instantly after being in clamshell mode

So I use Skype Video a lot, and I use a Samsung external monitor.
The problem is that I have my MacBook in Clamshell mode nearly all the time, and at the moment, when I get a Skype video call, all I can do is open the screen on the MacBook and just have a black screen, (all video goes to the Samsung) so that when I want to look at the person I am talking to, I have to look away from the camera because the MacBook sits to the side of the Samsung.
My question is, how would I instantly switch on the MacBooks screen when receiving a video call and then have the Skype Video immediately under the camera?
Would this involve writing a script of some kind or does anyone know of any apps to download?

I'm not sure that there's a reasonable fix for you. However, I would suggest that you use your MBP in a dual monitor mode. It gives you a ton more desktop space, and would immediately solve your problem. I use Skype video that way (although I have an Apple LED monitor, so it has an iSight camera on it).

  • Clamshell Mode With 30" Apple Cinema HD Display

    Hello,
How can I use my 17" MacBook Pro with my 30" Apple Cimema HD Display in clamshell mode (with lid closed). I can only use it in clamshell mode when the AC adapter is plugged in. When I try to wake the computer from battery, it turns on but then goes right back to sleep mode.
    Thanks in advance,
    Edwin

That's normal behaviour… clamshell mode will not work when your MBP is running without AC power.

  • Clamshell mode - Cinema display

I have a 20" Apple Cinema display. Can anyone confirm that plugging the mouse/keyboard into the USB ports on the display is compatible with operating the MacBook in "clamshell" mode?
    Thanks-

    Hi,
Do you have to set any preference in your MacBook to make this work? I had my MB connected to Gateway FPD 2200, keyboard and a mouse connected to MB through a USB port. But I could never get the Clamshell mode to work.
When I close the lid, the MB goes into the sleep mode, so I just click a mouse button to wake it up. My MB seems to be coming out of the sleep mode because it asks me to type in my password, but as soon as I type the password, the external display goes black and I see the sleep indicator on my MB blink, meaning it is in the sleep mode.
    Thanks.
