Using MacBook Pro as a display for external media via Thunderbolt/Displayport
How do I enable Thunderbolt display input via HDMI to use my MacBook Pro late 2011 as a display for other media? I have HDMI connected by a rocketfish adaptor and their company website Q and A seems to indicate this should work.

You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler

That's odd - if you open Disk Utility (Applications->Utilities) and select the disk(s), how are they formatted? If you're only going to be used with your Mac, they should be formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

My 30" Cinema display on my MacPro was flickering and now is completely off. Is there a way to hook up my MacBook Pro as a display for a temporary fix?

When I connect my headphones to my Macbook Pro, the sound continues to come through the Thunderbolt display instead of the headphones. Any help would be appreciated.
To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them -
I am currently sick with the flu and in my room I dont have a tv. I tried plugging my xbox one's hdmi into the hdmi port on my macbook pro late 2013 retina display. I would guess that the HDMI port on your mac is for output only - no input, and that's what your'e attempting to do when you attach the mac to your xbox. I looked in Mactracker and it lists the HDMI port as video output for both the 13" Retina MacBook Pro and the 15" Retina MacBook Pro (your post didn't say which one you have), so looks like that is the issue..

Use Macbook Pro as keyboard/display combo for desktop CPU?
What I want is the power and upgradability of a desktop, but I want to be able to work from my recliner, as I am accustomed to doing with my Macbook Pro. I would love to be able to hook up my Macbook Pro to a desktop (ideally via wireless, but a cord would not be a deal-breaker) and use it like a keyboard/display combo. I've searched and searched but never have found anything I'd consider "definitive" on this, though there does seem to be quite a bit of general interest in lazing about on on comfortable furniture to work. Do any of you know if this is possible? If so, how?
PS: PLEASE no lectures on how working from a recliner leads to back problems
Thanks!No. Target DIsplay Mode is only available on the 27-inch iMacs, and for those with a Thunderbolt port, the video output must come from a Thunderbolt source.

I want to connect my Canon 70D to HDMI port on MacBook Pro so that I can use the MacBook Pro as a monitor while shooting video with the camera? AppleCare unable to provide a solution. Is there a way to do this....and/or an app for that?

The MBP w/ Retina Display is 2.3GHz but the other without Retina Display is 2.6GHz. So I don't know which one would play games absolutely flawlessly. I wont have the screen resolution so high on the games though. So can someone reply and tell me which one I should get and why?
Mac's are generally not 3D gaming computers and laptops especially are not because 3D games require a upgraded video card to take advantage of newer games and more feature rich updates.
Only the Mac Pro can one change the video card, if one can find a upgrade for it.
If you really love 3D gaming, a Windows 7 3D gaming tower is your machine.

3D gaming on a Mac is sort of a second hobby, it's rather short lived as one can't replace the video card once a year, only with a new machine purchase.
Most 3D games are for Windows anyway and Apple almost demands OS X be upgraded to newer verisons annually now, so that sort of throws a monkey wrench into a Mac gaming rig with software upgrades and all. On the other hand Windows 7 is supported for a decade.
Mac's just don't work well with 3D gaming, perhaps a Win 7 tower and a iPad or something. -

Backing up macbook pro to time capsule for first time via ethernet
I set up a new 2T Time Capsule / Airport, let it run overnight, only about half way backed up. I deleted first backup file, and want to do the backup via ethernet. How do I do this?

This will depend on how you have the Time Capsule connected to your network.
If you have it connected from your modem or modem/router using an Ethernet cable at the present time, you are already set. Just connect another spare Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to your Mac....and be sure to turn off the wireless on the Mac before you start the backup.
Normally, about 25-30 GB of data will transfer per hour this way, so if your Mac has say, 60 GB of data loaded, the backup should take approximately 2-3 hours. Once the backup is complete, disconnect the Ethernet cable and turn the wireless back on at the Mac.
However, if you have the TIme Capsule configured to connect to your network using wireless only, then the Ethernet ports are not enabled on the Time Capsule in this type of setup. It is not possible to backup using an Ethernet connection unless you are willing to reconfigure the Time Capsule for the backup...and then reconfigure it again to get it back to its current setup. -
How does Autodesk Maya run on the MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

Thanks!One thing I do know, is the the UI is very small and menu items/buttons are hard to see. Someone posted a video of a now removed autodesk forum response on how to adjust font sizes .cfg file style, but I tried and it did nothing to the small text in Maya 2014. If you plan on it and don't have button and menu locations memorized by feel, I wouldn't use this software on a macbook pro without an external display, or change the resolution out of retina to use Maya.
