Using MacBook Pro as a monitor for video camera using HDMI

I want to connect my Canon 70D to HDMI port on MacBook Pro so that I can use the MacBook Pro as a monitor while shooting video with the camera? AppleCare unable to provide a solution.  Is there a way to do this....and/or an app for that?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You cannot use a MacBook Pro as an external display. To do this, you need that Target Display mode is included in the firmware, and this is only available on iMacs.
However, you can still use your MacBook Pro as an external display for another Mac by using ScreenRecycler

No.  The iMac line can act like a second monitor but not a MBP

Can I use my Macbook Pro as a monitor for my G4 tower? I am trying to see if the existing monitor I have is causing my kernal panics on my G4 tower....

Monitors don't typically cause kernel panics. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.
Open your Console application and locate the last panic log entry. Copy it and post here. Perhaps we can help if you provide more information about your kernel panics.

  • MacBook Pro as second monitor for 27" iMac

    Hello,
Yesterday I purchased a 13" MacBook Pro and a Thunderbolt cable. I figured out how to use my 27" iMac as an extended display for the MacBook Pro by clicking cmnd F2 on the iMac's keyboard but how do you use MacBook Pro as an extended display for the iMac? Clicking cmnd F2 on the laptop doesn't work.
I've come up empty with my searches.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! Really, it's opened up my way of looking at it and I can see how these suggestions could come in handy. What I've done for the immediate is install Air Display. It's not ideal as the image fragments somewhat when areas of an image are selected using PS on the external display (MacBook Pro). I'm an animation BG artist so detail is important but once it goes into the main iMac display it seems fine.
I mostly wanted the second monitor as a reference point for what I'm 'painting' on the iMac and to have the ability to select colour, ect. Since I HAD to buy a MBP recently I figured I might as well get the the most from it!
    Cheers!

  • Which 15" MacBook Pro will be best for my planned use?

I am heading back to school and am required to get a MacBook Pro for class (I am a Design, Art & Technology - AKA Multimedia - major).  The suggested specs from the school are as follows:
    15-inch MacBook Pro
    2.7GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB GDDR5 memory
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
I am in the process of researching if this is the best computer for my needs.  I am upgrading from my current laptop - a 2.53 GHz 15" MacBook Pro from '09 with 4GB of RAM and 7200 RPM 750 GB HDD (upgraded from a 5200 RPM 250 GB HDD) running 10.6.8 - which has been holding up great for four years.  At this point though I need a second computer that has a quadcore processor.
    My normal/expected usage:
I will likely be working on projects in web design, some light game design, app design, interactive installation, etc. for class.  I anticipate working on video editing software and Photoshop as well.  I regularly use Ableton Live with an external audio interface, MIDI devices and third party plugins for music production (20 to 40+ track mixing & mastering) and may start to use it for live or interactive projects.  I run an external monitor as a second screen when at home and do a good amount of multitasking work with the second display where quickness switching between applications is key.
I stopped by the local Apple store today and had a conversation with one of the sales reps exploring the possibilities of deviating from my school's suggested bundle above.  We talked about the benefits of SSD's on performance but the drawbacks on storage size to $$ ratio (I need at least 500GB of storage space, preferably 700GB).  The rep suggested multiple times that the Retina display model would be best for me because it is a more durable computer and makes more sense than dropping the 2.7 GHz processor to a 2.6 GHz on the above recommendation and using the money to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD (since it would be a similar computer but without the hi-res screen).  But the Retina models were in stock, while the custom non-retina model I was considering building online was not, so I do not know if the rep was just doing his job as a salesperson and trying to move what the store had in stock...
What I am hoping to get opinions on is: Given my planned usage, will the school's suggestion be sufficient/will my downgrade of proccessing power to fund an SSD be insufficient/does it make sense to really stretch my budget and get the Retina 15" 2.7 GHz with 8GB RAM and 512/768 GB SSD?  Even with the educational pricing and my usage, I don't know if the upgrade to the Retina 15" is justified - but I am not very experienced in comparing computers.  Any thoughts or suggestions?  Thanks!

I say DITTO to what Clinton just told you, AND what woodmeister said.
As to use of the External HD  use same for all large media files, PDF , pics, movies etc.
Keep your internal SSD for programs and primary (use it every day) working files of small size.
Yes, I would replace the SSD as upgrade and RAM myself.
Ram takes 30 seconds to do, anyone can do that nearly with eyes closed.  EASY
SSD, youd need to use carbon copy cloner or likewise, clone your internal HD to the SSD, check with a boot to make sure all ok........then install the SSD, very easy, like Clinton said, .....done it many times.
    You asked:
Are you able to reference info on them without moving the data to the internal SSD?
Yes, you can alter, open close etc files off the external HD same as you can the internal SSD, however access speed will be slower, but plenty fast enough for anything you want to do, watch movies off same, work on/ alter/ create files on internal and then backup to external
You need an external HD at any rate for Time Machine backup, and backup in general. NEVER trust any internal HD, or a single copy of anything.
In fact you should always have at least 2 backups for data, in which case a 2nd external HD is highly recommended.

  • MacBook Pro retina as monitor for AV receiver

    Hi
    Is this possible:
Connect AVReceiver (in this case latest Denon Av2113)  to MacBook Pro and route the video to MacBook Pro (or iMac 2012 27") screen.
For example show bluray (or any other video source that Denon can route) video on the MacBook Pro screen.
Scenario I am trying to make is to avoid purchasing extra tv or monitor for the work room and just use the screen or one of the Apple monitors connected to the computer for video display.
If this is possible how should I connect the devices.
Do I need 3rd party software for this to happen.
I have tried: Mac connected via the HDMI port on Mac to HDMI out of the Denon.
The other way round I can easily play music from Mac  or Mac sounds on Denon connected speakers either via HDMI in or via optical.

  • What preset MacBook pro would be better for video editing and eventually college?, What preset MacBook pro would be better for video editing and eventually college?

    Hi,
I am thinking about getting a MacBook Pro.  My current computer is very very old and can not be used.  I would like to use it for video editing and eventually to use when I go to college.  I want to get one of the preset 13 inch MBPs.  I do not know which one will be better for my purposes.  Could anyone please help me??

Any computer made today, Windows or Mac, will be MILES ahead of what you are now using.
Raw CPU speed is not the total benchmark of a computer. Look at it this way. A 2.6GHz CPU made today is much faster then a 2.6GHz CPU made just a few years ago, like 3 years ago. the difference between a 2.6 and a 2.9GHz CPU is 3 tens of 1 GHz, 300MHz. The percentage difference is about 8-9 percent (.08-.09). Back when CPUs were listed in MHz, 120, 300, 600, if you have a 300MHz CPU and you replaced it with one that was 300MHz faster that was a Big Jump. You doubled the computing power. Today 300MHz, .3GHz, is next to nothing. Especially for the price jump.
Note that when you make the switch you will either need to update your program, that means Re-Buying most of them, to work on the Mac OS or install a version of Windows in either a Boot Camp partition, Dual booting the Mac, or into a Virtual Machine software program to run the Windows version of those program.
If you decide on a Mac buy the BASE model that is offered for the CPU speed you want. The RAM and hard drive can be upgraded by you for much less then what Apple charges for those upgrades. With the hard drive if you upgrade it to a larger and faster drive, Apple supplies 5400RPM drives, like a 7200RPM drive you get to Keep the original drive to use in any way you like. Like an external drive.

  • Using MacBook Pro As Secondary Monitor?

Just purchased a MacBook Pro (Intel Duo-Core i7 w Lion installed) and own a Mac Pro Dual Core Intel for my work.  On the tower I am running OSX 10.5.8.  Would like to use the the MBP as a secondary monitor to the tower.  Have looked around trying to find out if/how to do this but have only been able to find how to hook up a secondary monitor to the MBP and not vice versa.
Newbie at this so if there is any information or additional info required, just let me know and I will get it.  Appreciate any and all help  Thanks!

Have you looked in the App Store? (Mac App Store)
I know there are Apps available to let you (at least) mirror your display on other computers, MAC or PC.
If you are trying to have it do more than just mirror and use it like a true secondary display (an extension of desktop, etc...) I'm not entirely sure if their is anything available to make that happen.

  • CAN I TURN MY MACBOOK PRO INTO A MONITOR?

Help I want to turn my Macbook Pro into a monitor for my Playstation 2 so that way I can record on my screen using quicktime. please help I used a vga adapter from apple a AV to vga converter, and is their any way for me to use an iphone on a mac to play ios games while recording?

I don't think you can without some sort of capture card (very expensive, and because most MacBook Pros don't have a card, you need to use the FW800).  MBP's Thunderbolt port only sends video signals out, you can't attach an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable from your camera to the MBP and expect to show video.
You could try a utility like Sofortbild.

  • Registering a used Macbook Pro

Wanting to be certain in buying a used Macbook Pro, I've asked for the serial number of the machine, and now I want to check with Apple if this is a legitimate machine. I've checked with a site called Chipmunk which tells me where it was made, the model, etc. But not whether it has been registered. If I register the serial # with Apple, and it turns out to be stollen, am I then in the hot-seat? <Edited by Moderator>
