It appears as if the OS currently on that machine was not the original OS? If so, you are running into this problem because the seller did not do what he was supposed to do - he was supposed to erase the hard drive and reinstall the original OS. And, if he got either the OS or any apps at the app store, they are not transferable as they are tied to his Apple ID forever. That is why you will have to pay for them using your own Apple ID. And, if he obtained the current OS at the app store, you may also run into another problem: you may not be able to reinstall the OS if needed as that is tied to the original Apple ID as well.

I've bought an used macbook pro and want to change the ownership!

Basically i've purchased on ebay a pre-owned macbook pro that hasn't come with the original OS discs and I don't know how to change the ownership!
I've only have the ebay articule of the auction that I won and my credit card resume where I paid for the item that proofs my ownership on the macbook but nothing else!!
I just want to state somehow legally that this macbook is now mine in case i need apple care assistance or anything else (legal matters).

Which OS was originally pre-installed? You need this information, in order to receive the proper instructions on how to wipe it clean.
Macs that came with the OS'es 10.6.8 & earlier are not suppose to be sold w/o the DVDs that originally came w/them per Apple's license agreement. If this is the case w/you, then you purchased a glorified door stop. The system DVDs have troubleshooting tools on them and they are machine specific.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

Brand new MacBook Pro 13.3 - Where's the OS installation Media?

I just bought a 13.3" MacBook Pro for my wife for Xmas. As I went through the package, I noticed there's no installation CD/DVD.
This is the latest version of Lion. I know nothing about Macs. (so far I hate it, but my wife is so bad with computers, I was hoping that getting her a Mac would make her life easier with pics and media- so far I've been disappointed). I have managed to update iTunes and the OS, including the firmware update.
If I wanted to upgrade/replace the hard disk, how would I recover the operating system? I've been a Windows/IT guy for 16 years....this is all foreign to me. At this point, I'm strongly considering returning the MacBook, saving $500, and getting a PC that I can support.

Yes, a Windows PC will certainly need support (...and I think that PC's are also moving away from including "Install Media")
You should consided getting AppleCare. You don't have to get it right away, you can purchase it within a year or the MBP's purchase. I got mone at LA Computer

My MacBook Pro gets hot, where's the fan???

Anyone know when the fan in the MBP should turn on? I never hear my fan, but since I got addicted to an online game, I've noticed that my computer gets very hot to the touch on the bottom side (as you look at the bottom, the heat is coming mostly from the right upper corner area). (There IS a fan, right???) I've been reading threads here about overheating, and it sounds like games and laptops don't mix very well, and also that it's "normal" for the MBP to get hot. BUT, I've also been seeing everyone mention their fans. My computer has never shut down while I'm playing. Should I be worried about my silent fan?
This is a mid 2012 model, OS X 10.9.4. I'm not tech-savvy, so not sure what other info to add that might be helpful.

Your fan always runs at about 2000 RPM and will increase up to 6000 RPM after 140 degreesF and higher is reached. This widget will show you continuos measurements for you to see

I'm still deciding whether buying an hdmi adapter would be worth the money or not. All I want to know, is if the macbook supports hdmi input (I'm well aware that it supports input) so I could use the laptop monitor as a gaming display and what not. All positive answers appriciated, thanks!

Registering a used Macbook Pro

Wanting to be certain in buying a used Macbook Pro, I've asked for the serial number of the machine, and now I want to check with Apple if this is a legitimate machine. I've checked with a site called Chipmunk which tells me where it was made, the model, etc. But not whether it has been registered. If I register the serial # with Apple, and it turns out to be stollen, am I then in the hot-seat? <Edited by Moderator>

What you are entitled to is the MBP and the original OS that the MBP came with which is Lion and the associated applications.
In order to install Lion, you will have to boot your MBP with the OPTION COMMAND R keys held down. That will connect you to the Apple servers and they will check your MBP. A 4 option menu will appear. Select the Lion installation option and install Lion.
Now your MBP will be registered in your name and you may open your own Apple account. If you want Mt. Lion, then you will have to purchase it from the Apple online store.

Bought Used macbook pro, don't have administrator password and don't have the OS disc. Is there a way I can reset or delete the password?

I recently bought a used macbook pro. I can pretty much do everything I need on it until I want to change setting and such things. Then it asks me for an administrator password which I do not know or have. On top of that I do not have the OS disc either. Is there a way I can SAFELY reset or delete the password so I can set my own without the possibility of screwing thing up. LIke I said I can do most anything. I figured this out when attempting to tether it to my smartphone for internet access (I do all the time from my desktop but my desktop is a PC so things are a little different) I am a very new mac user, I have always been a devoted PC user until now. I have to say I am really loving my macbook pro I may just stick with mac from now on (if I can get this problem figured out without too much stress.
I am looking for the safest and best way to fix this issue where nothing I do would mess up the laptop. I can use it now and I do not want that to change, I just want to be able to change my setting and set a password of my own. PLEASE HELP, THANX!

There actually is a slightly easier way in OS X 10.5 or greater.
1. Start up in single-user mode (hold Command-S as the computer starts up).
2. Type: mount -uw /
3. Press Return.
4. Type this:
passwd (user's short name)
Replace "(user's short name)" with the short name of the user account whose password you wish to reset. If you are not sure what the account name is, you can get a list of user names by typing: ls /Users
5. Press Return.
6. Enter a new user password.
7. Press Return.
8. Type: reboot
9. Press Return.

Green is a marketing term for a drive designed for lower power use, lower noise, and lower heat. The side effect is that it's not as fast. Black drives are designed for highest performance, so they might use more power and run hotter and noisier. I upgraded my Apple Time Capsule with a green drive, but I put a black drive in my Mac Pro.

Have you tried booting from the Recovery HD to reinstall Lion?
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
You will need the Apple ID and password used to purchase Lion. If you have not purchased Lion, then you will need to purchase the Snow Leopard DVD and install Snow Leopard then update it to 10.6.8 to access the App Store where you can purchase and download Lion under your own Apple ID. Or you can purchase the Apple USB Lion installer flash drive at any local Apple retailer or the Online Store.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.
