Using Macbook Pro to do HD video editing?
Hi all,
I recently purchased Sony's HDR-HC1 high-definition camcorder, and I found out my current computer is way too slow for HD video editing. I want to purchase a brand Mac to get the job done. I am wondering if the Macbook Pro is powerful enough? Anyone has any experience editing HD video footage on Macbook Pro?
Yes it is. I have the HC1's bigger brother the prosumer HVR-A1U and I just received my universal final cut studio yesterday and just played a little, but yes it can. I have the 17" MBP and have both played high def. H.264 quicktime movies on it and have also imported some HDV content and that too plays fine. The only problem I have is that I went with the 7200 RPM drive so that I can edit on the go with just my laptop, but between the system software, and my document from my current machine, I was down to barely any space available. What I'm gonna do now is keep my old machine and the documents on that, and so I can keep the majority of my HDD open for video editing.

buy more RAM or faster cpu for video editing?
Thanks mate but it doesnt, answer the question about performance.
In terms of screen real estate, I don't care much for it as I usually work relatively close to the pixel sizes and I generally work in very dum conditions so the antiglare is something I also dont care for. If mac offered a Matt finish screen again it would be a dream lol.
Retina though sweet is really just a gimmick, stare at one screen, starred at them all, so I'm fine with the regular MBP.
And size does matter.

What Macbook Pro to get for video editing?
For software like adobe after effects cs5, what macbook would be the best, I have pretty limited money so is the base model ok? if not whitch one works well?
Thanks! The top end non-retina, 15" anti-glare is the best. SSD preferred, has a Superdrive. RAM and hard drive upgradable later by the user.
The retina has a glossy screen which is hard on the eyes and using in various places, it's battery life is terrible and the images are not correct as it's blowing things up to mach the higher pixel rate. No Superdrive. You can't open the machine up, you can't clean the fans of dust you can't upgrade it later, you will have to max it out at purchase for a small fortune and go way over budget. Plus there really isn't too much difference in the quality of the screen with regular MBP's anyway, just eats battery life to drive that huge pixel screen. You'll be replacing it a lot sooner than the standard 15"
Don't waste your money on the 13", it lacks a dedicated graphics, the CPU does it thus it's HOT. Won't 3D game well if your also into play.
Top end 15" antiglare is perfect.

Actually the MacPro is the perfect choice of power and performance for video editing, with it's substancial cooling. But you want a laptop , just know things will take longr and the machien will be hotter as a result and wear out sooner if your doing 3D gaming or video often. -
Hi there.
I'm buying a new Macbook Pro and would like to know how well the different specs would handle editing HD videos from a GoPro. I've mostly been filming in 720 because my current white macbook (2008) is dying, but wouldnt mind filming in 1080.
This is what im consudering
http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=ME865LL/A&step=config
2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
Intel Iris Graphics
Will it be powerful enough? Would it be very future proof?
Thanks for your help in advance.
ChrisI would agree that the $200 upgrade to the i7 would probably be the best choice if you want the 13" form factor. If you're able (and since these systems are so new, I've not seen many heads-up comparisons), I would ask to load Premier on both an i5 model and an i7 model and see which renders video more quickly. Usually, a lot of rendering depends on the GPU but, as I said, I don't know enough about the Iris built-in GPU to know if it's a lot faster than the old Intel 4000 or not.
If you can't get a hands-on Premiere comparison, surely you could ask for a FCP X demo on both machines!
Good luck with your choice,

Best value in a used Mac Pro combo for heavy video editing (FCP7 + AE)?
Scouting a used system to handle heavy Final Cut Pro 7 editing and After Effects animation -- would like to stay 100% Mac, but need some advice regarding the various models of Mac Pro's, core/ghz combos, video cards, and other specs to consider. Looking for a recomendation for a base model to start with (ex. Mac Pro 4,1 quad-core 2.8 vs Mac Pro 3,1 8-core 3.2) and opinions on the minimum threshhold for RAM and preferred video cards for animation. The system I'm trying to build needs to handle more complicated animation, layers, and larger video and PNG files without lag on playback. Also, it'd be great to speed up render time.
I know there are 8, 12, 16 core systems out there that can dominate these tasks, but general impression is I don't need to go so big to get the performance I'm looking for. For this reason I'm setting a budget of $2,000 for the tower and now it's a matter of finding the best used model for the money, with room to upgrade things like video card, RAM, for optimal performance.
I am upgrading from a 2008 15" MacBookPro with dual core 2.66Ghz, 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 that is slowing to a crawl when I'm animating mulitiple elements in FCP and AE. It's what I learned FCP and Adobe on.
Thanks
AnthonyThe processors are fast. And there is still lots of space on the silicon.
But the memory... it's too slow. "Why, in the times we are waiting for stuff from memory, we could practically execute another instruction stream! All we would need is a second set of registers."
So that is what they did. It is called Hyper-Threading. It lets each Xeon Nehalem and later processor (2009 and later) take on an additional thread (not quite a full additional processor's worth of compute power). It makes them benchmark quite a bit faster than the previous generation. Along with changes to memory and Bus Architecture, it is nearly twice a s fast at the same number of processor at same nominal speed. -
Witch software can i use to do split screen on video editing on a macbook
witch software can i use to do split screen on video editing on a macbook pro
please apple people without using the very expensive final cutiMovie 11 has split screen. Enable the Advanced Tools in iMovie Preferences. Then drag one clip on top of the other and choose split screen.
Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro will allow you to do this with a lot more control. -
I am new to iMovies. When I make a video using the mic and camera in my Macbook Pro, the audio and video are not in synch. Very annoying. How can I fix this?
DVD drives read the bottom of the disk, not the top. Smooth out the paper & try again.

Seeking advice on used Macbook Pro
Hi. Have a pretty simple question that some of the experts here might have an opinion on. I'm looking for a used Macbook Pro 17-inch for portable video/photo editing (Final Cut Studio, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.). I have my eye on two MBPs at the moment. One is a mid-2010 with a core i5 processor and 8GB RAM for $1000, and the other is a 2011 with a quad-core i7 processor and 4GB RAM plus Thunderbolt port for $1400. Both come with all the original accessories and discs. Basically, I'm wondering if the performace upgrade to the 2011 model is worth the extra $400. Thanks in advance.
I have both a 2010 17" MBP and a late 2011 17" MBP. Both have i7 CPUs.
One advantage that the 2010 MBP has that, theoretically, the battery run time is longer than that of the 2011 MBP. I have never tried to measure it.
Advantages of the 2011 MBP are the Thunderbolt port and the capacity to have up to 16 GB RAM installed.
As far as the CPUs are concerned, a quad core will perform more efficiently IF the application is designed to take advantage of all cores. Other wise it becomes a question of CPU speed. That I have tested.
Given the choice, I personally would opt for the 2011 MBP, but it is your money, not mine that is at stake.

What to look for when buying a used MacBook Pro? Tips
Here to acquire a few tips on purchasing a used Macbook Pro. I am not graced with an Apple Store in my area, so I must rely on my own sub par geek wit and with the help of yours.
Tips I know.
Checking Battery Cycles and mAh capacity.
Looking for third party applications.
Request the original StartUp/Install Disks.
Checking memory ratios...Shop your local and nearby Craigslist websites, starting with:
http://tampa.craigslist.org/
Read this excellent post by frequent contributor JasonFear about buying and selling through Craigslist:

Avoid Ebay.
If third-party applications or other software are included, they add nothing at all to the value of the machine unless you are given the original installer discs for them. Otherwise, they are just pirated software that you can't reinstall if you ever need to.

I need help to decide which macbook pro is best for photo editing, editing movies and doing all the rest too like microsoft office products ...excel, word etc. I am new to the apple world and have liked the idea of the MAC Book Pro 13" but really dont know if this is good enough or if the computer will soon crash?
13-inch: 2.6GHz
with Retina display
Specifications
2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
512GB PCIe-based flash storage1
Intel Iris Graphics
Built-in battery (9 hours)2That's a fine machine and, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB flash storage should serve you well for light video/photo editing as well as for 'normal' usage. And it should last you for years to come.
Good luck in making your decision!!

Software update on used Macbook pro
Hi all.I recently purchased a used macbook pro. When I tried to update pages, numbers and key note, the apple ID of the previous owner comes greyed so I cant edit the area to put mine. But I can update the OS(mavericks 10.9.1 to 10.9.2) and itunes.Does this mean the OS was not registered in the previuos user's apple ID.Can I just delete the apps I can't update and reinstall using my ID?
OK, here's what will happen
If Mavericks was installed by the previous owner you will be able to update it, but not reinstall it, not a safe place to be in.
Erase the Mac, reinstall the original version of OS X (the one it came with) and then install the things that you (rather than the previous owner) want.
Use Internet Recovery to erase and reinstall. Make a backup before you do. -
