Using MacMini (2006) with CRT television

Hi all. I've been a mac owner for a while now, and decided to purchase a MacMini the other day to use connected to my tv using front row and eye tv.
I have a Sony 32inch widescreen CRT tv. With the Mini I purchased a DVI to Video adapter and hooked it all up with composite video to start with just to test it.
I wasn't expecting great quality, but I was expecting to set it up to suit my wide screen telly. But it's just rubbish! The picture always has black lines at the top and bottom, and all the resolutions available to me are 4:3 style and not 16:9. If I choose overscan It goes too large and the menu bar is lost.
It would be nice to use say 1024 by 576. This is a PAL tv by the way as i'm from the UK, but it support NTSC if required.
Thanks all in advance, and I don't know who else to turn to!

Ok, I tried swtichresX and had no luck. I've played around with it for hours now. I've even tried to copy the original screen formats number by number, but it won't let me put all the frequencies in the same.
For example if I want to copy the standard 640x480 setup that the mac uses for this adapter, when I copy the values and paste them into a custom set up it instantly changes some of the frequencies etc. Also the standard set up as you suggested doesn't work either.
Thanks again for your help, but is this at all possible? Can't really see how they can advertise it as being able to run on a telly, when it clearly cannot.

  • Can I use Front Row with macMini (PowerPC)?

Is Front Row compatible with macMini PowerPC version and Tiger? Or does it need Intel?

Do you think that I can successfully emulate an Apple TV by setting up my MacMini (PowerPC) with a third party (someone suggested Keyspan) remote, Front Row application, and using Front Row to access iTunes music, TV shows, and videos (same as APple TV),and using Safari to access .mac web gallery (now available on Apple TV2)? The interface on the AppleTV is probably more elegant and seamless, but really, I could access the same content with the macMini, right? Also YouTube videos and Picasa photos can also be accessed via Safari. It will just look and feel more like a computer if I use Safari, vs a Media Centre! Do you think it's worth giving a try?

If you need to extract the drive's content you can remove it and install it in a $10 USB enclosure. It will be readable by any recent Mac.

  • I have a mac book pro, 2006 with an 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, can I update to Lion? to use icloud.

Apple keep telling me I need to update to icloud but I'm not sure if Lion will work on my Mac. I've upgraded to snow leopard which seems to have knackered my .me or .mac account (whatever it's called now), so I don't seem to have any option but to upgrade to Lion if I every want to see my emails again.
Apple say I must have a Intel Core 2 processor for Lion to work...... at least I think that's what they say.
I have a mac book pro, 2006 with an 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, can I update to Lion?

    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
If you have a Core Duo model then you cannot upgrade to Lion. You can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but iCloud is not available for Snow Leopard.
Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. Look for the Model ID in the displayed information. If you have a MacBookPro 2,1 or later then you have a Core 2 Duo model and can upgrade to Lion.

  • CRT Television problems

    Hi
When I connect my MB to a regular 28" CRT Television with either a S-Video or Composite, I get a black border around the image on the TV. Is there any way to adjust that?

There used to be an option to "Overscan" in the display settings that would handle that, but now that I look, I can't find it in Leopard.

Problems like slow refresh or other problems..
I answer this because MacMini has only 64mb video shared memory...

Yes, you can use a switch. I do. I had to experiment to find one I liked. So I recommend that you buy from a store with an easy return policy.

  • Need Help - Mac Mini no longer works with LG Television

Sometime ago (maybe about two months), my Mac Mini quit working with my LG Plasma HD TV. Currently, when I try to use the Mac Mini with the television, the screen displays a "no signal" message.
The Mac Mini is a one year old Intel Core Duo and is connected using a DVI to HDMI cable.
    I've troubleshooted:
    1. Connected the Mac Mini to our 42" Sharp Aquous LCD - it displays fine.
    2. Taken the Mac Mini to the Genius bar. It displayed on the genius' Apple display w/no probs.
    Since then, I've tried:
    1. Reinstalled/rolled back to Leopard DVDs (no updates applied) - No luck
    2. "Driving" the Mac Mini via Screen Sharing using my MacBook and monkeying with the Display preference pane. While screen sharing, I tried using SwitchResX, too (not too certain of the settings though) - No luck.
    Of note:
    1. Before the trouble began, I was pleasantly surprised to see "LG" (automatically) listed as the display in the Display preference panel. Support was literally plug and play. Currently, when I drive via Screen Sharing, "LG" is no longer listed. Alternatively, when I connect to the Sharp Aquous, the Display preference panel DOES list "Sharp" as the display.
    Any ideas?

I'd be interested in any resolution here. Here's my story:
I have a Mac Mini model MA723LL/A and a Haier P42LV6-T1 42" HDTV plasma with VGA and HDMI inputs. I first attempted to hook the Mac to the plasma TV using the DVI->VGA adapter that came with the Mac. I got no image at all on the TV, and the TV claimed 'No Signal'.
Then I used a DVI->HDMI adapter, and hooked the Mac to the TV thru the HDMI port. I got a picture and was happy. I setup iTunes, got the wireless working, surfed the web a bit and all was OK except the resolution seemed wonky. So I opened the Mac's settings panel to adjust the resolution, and as soon as I opened the settings panel, the screen went blank, with the TV claiming 'No Signal'. I shut off the Mac and rebooted, and from that point forward, what happens is this:
    press On Button->
    Apple Boot Screen->
    MacOS 10 loading->
    desktop For About 1 millisecond->
screen goes blank with TV claiming 'No Signal'
I hooked the Mac to my Dell 20" LCD monitor thru the monitor's DVI input and got a great picture. I tested all the resolution settings, and everything was fine. I have tested the Mac on the TV with all available resolution settings and it's always the same story (see above for sequence)
I'm kinda at the end of my rope. The Mac seems to be changing something on its video output at the end of its bootup, but I have no clue what. Has anyone seen anything like this? Any advice at all?

  • How to boot new/used MacMini from external drive?

Last week I purchased a used MacMini (2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3) that had OS X 10.5.6 pre-installed. I was starting up from my OSX 10.5 install disk so that I could change the password, but the disk drive got noisy and repeatedly restarted until I ejected the disk.
Starting up from my desktop LG super multi drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GE20LU11) results in the same loop, even though the LG was selected as the startup disk.
How do I get the computer to give up on the broken internal drive and use the LG?

Then your DVD may be dirty or defective or boots a version of OS X that isn't compatible with the Mini model you have. For example, if it was initially released with 10.5.6 and you have a 10.5 DVD, then it will not start that computer. Your DVD also may not work if it is not a retail copy of Leopard, but an OEM disc that only has a PPC version of OS X.

  • Using 2G shuffle with speakers while simultaneously charging

I currently listen to my 40GB iPod photo at work through logitech mm50 speakers for 8-10 hours a day. I bought a 2G shuffle to use at work instead, because I've already dropped the big iPod from 30 feet up (I'm a carpenter...was working on a church bell tower...) and decided that my 400 dollar iPod was not worth risking at work any more.
I'm looking for a solution to using the shuffle with my speakers that will also charge the shuffle while in use. I know can plug the shuffle into the mm50 using the headphone jack to the line-in jack on the speakers, but then the shuffle is always running off the internal battery. That'll burn up the battery faster that I would like to.
I make of practice of using it plugged in with the big iPod, and once a week or so running off of batteries to keep the batteries excercised, and would like to do the same with the shuffle. I can see no way to do that. Does anyone know of any kind of adaptor that'll turn the usb cord from the shuffle dock into a full-blown dock connector? I saw that Altec Lansing had a cradle type of thing for using the 1G shuffle in their docking speaker sets. Ideally something like that for the 2G would be great.

  • Can I use aperture 3 with 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo?

Can I use Aperture 3 with an imac with a 2.4 ghz intel core duo processor?

Yes. I still use a 2006 2.33 GHz C2D MBP with 3 GB RAM as a backup box, and it "works." Be aware that iMac is underpowered overall for Aperture usage, but some folks do OK with it (4 GB RAM minimum). Like DLS said, more RAM is better than less RAM. 8 GB RAM is generally appropriate, but I can even overload the 8 GB in my 2011 MBP when running an aggressive Aperture/Photoshop workflow.
Also the stronger the GPU the better, and an SSD is far far preferable to a hard drive for boot, because any page outs go to SSD instead of to the horribly slow 2.5" laptop drive.

  • How to use Flex Components with Flash?

    Hi!!
I found a lot of very useful components in the web, but they are all for  Flex, is it possible to use Flex Components with Flash IDE?
    Thanks !!!
    jenry
PS: this is one of the components I need to use (a tree with checkbox  nodes)
    http://www.sephiroth.it/file_detail.php?pageNum_comments=30&id=151
    another one:
    http://www.darronschall.com/weblog/2006/09/a-flex-2-checked-tree-control-component.cfm

Flex components are delivered as SWCs just like Flash components, but the
SWC format is incompatible with the Flash IDE.
Also, the default fl.. components in the Flash IDE are incompatible with
    Flex components.
You should be able to load a Flex SWF into a Flash SWF as long as you aren't
using fl.. components in the Flash SWF.  If the Flex SWF overlays things
in your Flash SWF then it might block interaction, but otherwise it
shouldn't.  I don't think the statement you quoted is true for all
    configurations.
But loading a Flex SWF into a Flash SWF isn't going to help you use those
Flex components from your Flash IDE.  Try Flash Builder 4 to build out the
Flex portion of your application.  I haven't tried it myself, but it I think
it is supposed to have better integration with Flash.

  • Hi, I use facetime regularly with my parents who live outside US and it stopped working. Their ipad2 rings, says connecting..and then 'call failed'. Upgrading their iOS5 (or 6) is not a option as my parents do not know to do this. Please help

Hi, I use facetime regularly with my parents who live outside US and it stopped working. Their ipad2 rings, says connecting..and then 'call failed'. Upgrading their iOS5 (or 6) is not a option as my parents do not know to do this. I came across forums where this issue is mentioned on apple support and cnet.
Is there another option apart from upgrading ?

Well, in his defense, his parents bought him the player so I guess we can't blame him. Though the 6 GB versions were available in November so I guess they really did get 'nervous' about Christmas and like to get their shopping done early! Kudo's to you for trying to remain with the Creative line but for what you're looking for it's obviously not the player for you. Creative seems to be fine-tuning their line for the audio crowd. I'm into mp3 players for the audio. Sure, the ability to watch video's and look at pictures on a decent screen is a plus but for me at least, it's all about the music. And with music, 6 GB is more than enough. Heck, 8 GB would have been more than enough for me. I'm a subscriber to Napster-to-go, so I don't feel the need to carry 00 plus GB of stuff on my portable player. I honestly don't understand the desire to watch movies or TV shows on tiny little screens. But you're also talking to a guy who doesn't watch television. What a complete waste of time and brain cells. Probably the **competitor products we can't discuss here** or one of those players would better suit your needs. Companies are definately picking their niche markets carefully and Creative's decision to not offer hard dri've players any more seems to definately be saying bye-bye to that market. I can't say I blame them. Hard dri'ves eventually give up the ghost and are quite delicate for people on the go. Good ridance, I say. Let Apple, Zune and all the others cater to the Z generation's need to be spoonfed their video/TV addictions anywhere and everywhere. I'll pass. It's one thing to be able to enjoy some music on the go and enhance an otherwise dull work day or dri've. But movies/TV shows at work, school, or wherever? Please. Cut the cord! Just my $.02 - YMMV! This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
