Using Mail in Tiger 10.4.6 and no replies allowed

Hello all,
I just bought a new powerbook5,8 g4 1.67 mhz 15" that is updated to os 10.4.6 . I'm trying out the Mail program that is installed which is nice in some ways, but right away I noticed that I can't 'reply' to any posts I've received. If I hit reply button, when I try to send the post with the info for sending setup as Mail has done, I get an error message saying that the message can't be sent, and will stay in the out folder until problem is fixed or whatever. If I cut and paste the appropriate info (to: address, subject, message body, from: address and 'send' the message instead of replying, the message will send. Just will not go out if it is a 'reply'.
thanks for your help,
charles

You need to set up the outgoing server in the Mail
preferences. So, Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Outgoing
Mail Server (SMTP). make sure you've set up the
address the way your ISP requires.
I do have the settings the same as in my imac. the problem isn't the outgoing server settings, at least from what I can tell, the message sends if it is a straight sent message. If I've read a message, then click the reply button, and send the message that way it won't send. Manually inputting the info into a new message with the same text allows it to be sent.

  • Using Mail in Tiger, Messages in .mac account not deleted

I have recently upgraded my Slot loading iMac to Tiger. I have had a .mac account for many years.
I'm just starting to use Mail in Tiger to see if I can filter the Junk mail. The filter training seems to work OK, but once I delete the Junk messages in Mail, a copy of the Junk stays on my .mac account.
To delete the Junk on .mac, in Mail I have clicked "synchronize .mac account" and also "Erase deleted messages .mac account", but it dosen't seem to work.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to wait? Is there a time lag? Or am I just using the wrong tool?
I searched the discussions for this but could not find a smilar question.
    Thanks!

    Carlson,
I was not recommending any change, but only what was selected, to see if it might provide a clue -- it did not.
Create a New Mailbox, as On My Mac. Open the troublesome message (or highlight in the list of messages), and click Message, and in the pull-down choose Move Message, and target the New Mailbox you have just created.
Close Mail, and in Safari see if the message remains in the Inbox, on the server. If not, then in the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and find the New Mailbox you just created, and delete it.
Relaunch Mail, and see if any trace of the message remains. I have been researching some similar behavior with some bad acting messages, but not with an IMAP or .mac account, so I don't know if this will work, or not?

  • How do I send Windows-friendly network drive links using Mail (in Tiger)?

I'm in an office with mostly Windows users (and Windows NT servers). Most folks use Windows email applications such as Outlook and Outlook Express. I use Apple Mail 2.1.3 (753.1) in Tiger v10.4.11. But I want to send links within my emails to files on our various network drives and have the receiving Windows/Outlook users click the links to automatically open the various files, but I can't get this to work. Any ideas on how to format the network links so they work this way?
I don't log into the network drives normally until I want to access things, perhaps I should. But I've tried this and still no go.

Thanks, but I've tried this in a variety of ways, none of which seem to work. So there's more detail required. Here's some background and examples of what I've tried without success.
The Windows WORKGROUP is, say, "JAMESCORP" - but what's the equivalent in Apple networking to a Workgroup? And does this even matter? It seems to not matter?
The Windows drives are mapped on Windows machines as, say, F: G: H: I: etc... But I don't know what the equivalent concept of mapping drives is on an Apple (more on smb, below). I typically don't map Windows' network drives (I use VMWare Fusion) on the Windows side since I did not like the constant Windows messages reminding me each time I'm out of the office that it can't find the Drive F:. Then it can't find Drive G: - etc. ad infinitum. What a pain.
On the Apple side, I use Finder's command-K to smb into the server that contains all the partitioned drives. In the smb list, the drive names are, say, mapp-cdrv and mapp-ddrv etc (which, in Windows map to F: and G: respectively).
So when you type "servername" - I'm lost regarding just what the servername should really be? Is it:
    a) F: (which does not work for a Windows user once it's delivered via Apple Mail to an Microsoft Outlook email) So this seems to not be the proper servername - or if it is, there's a translation happening in the delivery mechanism that makes it not work. (I "Add Hyperlink" from the Edit menu to get the link into an Apple Mail message.)
    b) mapp-cdrv (which works on an Apple, but when sent to a Windows machine's email (e.g., Outlook) does not work - so this isn't it. This servername is not something the Windows machines understand
    c) cifs://workgroup;""me@<ip address of server>/mapp-cdrv (which, again, doesn't work on a Windows machine once sent thru Apple Mail).
I've tried a variety of other permutations of "servername" - both Windows-like server names and Apple-like server names - but none seem to work once delivered the way I'm delivering the links (thru Apple Mail to Outlook.)
Any other ideas? Thanks for the help! ; )

  • Exchange invite is not appearing in email (using mail)

    Hi,
I am using Mail under Tiger for my email system. I have just been sent an ics invite email from the office exchange server, however mail is not showing me the attachement, so I cannot add it to iCal. If I look at the raw message I can see the ics attachement, but for some reason mail isn't picking it up!
I have mail set to not automatically add invites to iCal, although setting it to automatic doesn't make a difference. As far as I am aware this invite was sent directly from the exchange server.
    any help ?

same is happening with me. my girlfriend sent me a few invites for events she has in her outlook calender at work in exactly the same way she has always done. I had the option to accept the events before, now it just shows the text part of the mime message (again I can see the ics in the raw message) in Mail and does not create a new event in iCal. I have turned the option in the mail general prefs on and off again to no avail, could it be that I have multiple calanders and there is no option in Mail to choose qwhich calaender the mail events go to? I dont really want to trash my mail prefs unless absolutely necessary

  • Using Mail to download from AOL, can't see photos in messages, help

We are using Mail to download our AOL account and can't seem to see photos in the emails even though they are being sent by another mac user. I did a search and saw this question was posted last Oct but no responses. Is there a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Zeke,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
I do not have an AOL account to test with, but have you set your account up as an IMAP account?
At the top of the email, is there any banner about images not having been yet downloaded? In the Mail Preferences/Viewing what is your selection about displaying remote images in HTML messages?

  • Why can't I use mail?

Every time I try and use mail I receive a prompt asking me the password to "smtp.mac.com:frmamone". I enter every password I ever had and it doesn't seem to work. I'm not sure why but it would sure be nice to use mail when clicking on email links and importing my mail from a web based service. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks
    Frank

First you must know what password you used to set up the email account, which I am sure you do.
Go to preference>accounts> next to outgoing smtp>click on the blue up down arrow on the right next to where it says ""smtp.mac.com:frmamone", at the bottom of the list go to edit server list> when the next box opens go to Advance>set up Authentication "Password"> user name> password
click ok. You should be asked if save the settings
Who is your internet provider, you can always check with them for the correct set ups also

  • Have entrourage and want to use Mail. Can't get it to work.

I had a macbook and purchased the Microsoft office for Mac which included Entrourage.
I have now purchased a new macbook Pro and want to begin to use Mail rather than Entrourage.
I have Entrourage on my new computer but i can't get it to transfer my information to the the Mail program
I am on Charter.net at my office and sbcglobal.net at home.
How can i get this to work.  I can receive on Mail, but i can't send.

check your outgoing port settings and make sure it's using a specific port and not the default port, also you might want to check to see if it is using SSL, TLS or any other encryption.  Verify the setting from your old machine setup.

  • I am using Mail with OS 10.9.1...I used to be able to drag and drop contact addresses from my address book to an e-mail header.  Now I have to type all the names and can't drag and drop.  Is there a setting for this?  Thanks!

I am using Mail with OS 10.9.1.  I used to be able drag and drop names from my address book into the address header, but can no longer do that.  I now have to type each name in.  Does anyone know if there is a setting for this or is it a feature of the updated software?  Thanks for any info!

Yes, that appears how Mavericks works right now. However, you can open the Address Panel, select all your contacts, then click the To (or CC, or Bcc) buttons to move the selection to the address field.
If it is not already in the Toolbar, right-click on the Toolbar and select Customize Toolbar…
Then, drag the address panel up to wherever you want it.
You may also want to add it to the New Message window in the same way.

  • How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8)

How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8) since November until now.  Mail will no longer download on the MacBook Pro and keeps asking for my password.

Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.

  • I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account. Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my account every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail. I cannot edit the outgoing server; how can I send emails?

I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account (3 email addresses). Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my accounts every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail (the message says that the outgoing server was rejected. I cannot edit the outgoing server, and the keychain will not save my passwords (the ports are valid). How can I change the outgoing server to send emails, and how can I avoid having Mail request my passwords every 2 minutes? Verizon, as usual, will not provide support to iMacs.

Is there an email saved in your drafts or outbox folder?  I suspect that Mail is continually trying to send it, and each time Google is rejecting the email message.
You can open the message and then delete it from your Outbox folder.  Then try removing all @gmail email addresses from it and seeing whether you can send to the other folks.  I suspect that will work.
With email, if an SMTP server *can* verify email addresses, sometimes it will and it will refuse to send messages.  If a message has to be relayed across servers, no verification is done, and you'll get a bounce if an email address is bad.
