Using Mail in Tiger, Messages in .mac account not deleted

I have recently upgraded my Slot loading iMac to Tiger. I have had a .mac account for many years.
I'm just starting to use Mail in Tiger to see if I can filter the Junk mail. The filter training seems to work OK, but once I delete the Junk messages in Mail, a copy of the Junk stays on my .mac account.
To delete the Junk on .mac, in Mail I have clicked "synchronize .mac account" and also "Erase deleted messages .mac account", but it dosen't seem to work.
What am I doing wrong? Do I have to wait? Is there a time lag? Or am I just using the wrong tool?
I searched the discussions for this but could not find a smilar question.
Thanks!

Carlson,
I was not recommending any change, but only what was selected, to see if it might provide a clue -- it did not.
Create a New Mailbox, as On My Mac. Open the troublesome message (or highlight in the list of messages), and click Message, and in the pull-down choose Move Message, and target the New Mailbox you have just created.
Close Mail, and in Safari see if the message remains in the Inbox, on the server. If not, then in the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and find the New Mailbox you just created, and delete it.
Relaunch Mail, and see if any trace of the message remains. I have been researching some similar behavior with some bad acting messages, but not with an IMAP or .mac account, so I don't know if this will work, or not?

  • Can you move mail folders from an old .Mac account to a new .Mac account?

I hope someone can help since even the Mac Genius at the Apple Store nor Applecare seem to know.
Due to massive spam to my .Mac account & it's alias accounts I opened a new .Mac account before my old account died. However, without any answers my old account died last night. Which probably doesn't help.
    1. Is there a way to move my mail folders in 'mail app' from my old .Mac account over to the new .Mac account?
    2. In 'mail app' > preferences > add account > the pop-up box for the new account automatically shows my old .Mac account information, full name, description, user name. But, if I replace that information with my new .Mac account name and info no one can tell me if that automatically delete any mail folders/information from the old account.
Basically I'm lost because no one seems to understand how the system works, not even the Mac Genius.
    Any ideas?

    You're welcome.
Second, because I couldn't get any real answers somehow last night I managed to drag & drop my 'mail app' mail folders onto my desktop. At least I have it there, LOL.
What do you mean by Mail.app mail folders? There is a single Mail folder which contains all Mail.app data (account folders, mailboxes, rules, junk mail learned settings, etc.) except for the Mail.app preference file which stores all account information and is stored in your Preferences folder.
Did you place a copy of the entire Mail folder located at Home > Library > Mail on the Desktop?
The question is can that mail folder from the desktop be placed into mail with the new .Mac account? Some of the old folders were from "on my mac" and some with .Mac & the server so not really sure what moved to the desktop. But, at least it's something.
The answer to this question is no. User created "On My Mac" location mailboxes are stored locally on the hard drive and are not associated with any account. User created "On My Mac" location mailboxes are located in the Mailboxes folder at Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes are are not deleted when deleting an account or changing existing account information with Mail.
When creating an account with Mail, an account named folder is created within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account. The associated account mailboxes are located within the account named folder with the exception of locally stored mailboxes for a .Mac type account or IMAP account. Locally stored mailboxes for a .Mac type account or IMAP account are located in the Mailboxes folder at Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes. This would be the account's Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk mailboxes if these mailboxes are not stored on the server which is available under the Mailboxes Behaviors tab for the account preferences.
Since a .Mac type account is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way, you have the option to store Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages locally on the hard drive with Mail for the account preferences.
Were you accessing your old .Mac account as a .Mac type account with Mail and if so, what were/are your settings under the Mailbox Behaviors tab for the account preferences for Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages - storing these messages on the server or locally on the hard drive?
Since a .Mac type account with Mail is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way, messages in the account's Inbox mailbox remain on the server and since Apple/.Mac has now cancelled this account, messages in the account's Inbox mailbox on the server have been deleted.
When you open the 'mail app' >file>add account> the pop-up box automatically has the information in there from the expired .Mac account.
Is your old .Mac account information still available at System Preferences > .Mac under the Account tab?
If so, this is where the Mail.app is getting the old .Mac account information which needs to be changed to your new .Mac account information.
If you placed a copy of the Mail folder on the Desktop for backup purposes, you can can create your new .Mac account with Mail which should not change or affect your existing .Mac account with Mail but you cannot "merge" account named folders and mailboxes between two accounts.
You can use the Import Mailboxes feature to import the old account's Sent mailbox if you did not store Sent messages on the server for your old .Mac account preferences.

  • Do I need to use mail if I have an iCloud account?

Do I need to use "mail" if I have an iCloud account?

Mac Mail should be called Mac Mail Reader. It is intended to make picking up, sorting, organizing, and sending mail through one or several mail accounts (one of which could be iCloud) easier.
You can use WebMail (not an Application, you just navigate to the iCloud mail repository with your Browser).
You can use a different mail reader. I think Mozilla was providing one if you like their stuff.

Whenever I updated or downloaded a new app from the App Store, a message appears saying:
    "Account Not In This Store
Your account is not valid for use in the U.S. store. You must switch to the Swedish. store before purchasing."
I made some research online and asked a few of my friends with the same problem. All they did was sign out of iTunes from settings>iTunes & App Stores or from the App Store itself and signed back in. It worked for many of them but not with my iPhone 4s. It really does get on my nerves to always sign out and back in to the App Store as it sometimes works and allows me to update and download or most of the time it doesnt.
When viewing my Apple ID account on my iPhone (after entering the password) it either views my account or says:
"This Apple ID is only valid for purchases in the U.S. iTunes Store. You will be switched to that Store. Try your purchase again."
So I press on OK then either switches me to the App Store app of its choice, or says "Cannot connect to iTunes Store".
I tried restoring iOS6 hoping it was a bad installation, but i still have the same problem.
    Can anyone help me please?
    Arian

Are you sure your AppleID is NOT tied to the US store? If you are trying to buy an app from the Swedish store you will be unable to do that. Some apps are only available on certain stores. That is why you get the "Cannot connect to the iTunes store" message when trying to buy that app. Your updates are being done from the US store ; thats why you can update sometimes and sometimes not.
If you keep encountering problems contact iTunes support. They will help you sort it out.

    Change App Store
    1. Tap "Settings"

  • "On My Mac" account inbox deleted

This a question concerning my wife's Mac - she's using 10.3.9 on a PowerMac G4. She is using Mail 1.3.11.
We think she deleted the "On My Mac" account that is listed under the "In" mailbox. As she recalls, she was trying to delete something in Address Book, got that app mixed up with Mail, and probably deleted "On My Mac" instead. In any case, it is no longer there.
She has an email account inbox which indicates 88 messages in it, but when she selects the account inbox icon, there are no messages listed. I have sent her email to that account, and the message count increases, but no mail shows in its inbox. Also, this account is showing the triangular icon that indicates a subfolder, but there has never been a subfolder for that email account, and none shows up when the folder is opened.
We got desperate and tried to create a new "On My Mac" mailbox, but it doesn't put it under "In", it places it at another level.
Any suggestions? Would "Rebuild" help in any way?

I've been using the Mail.app exclusively since Jaguar was introduced, thru Panther and now Tiger and I've never had an "On My Mac" named mailbox under "In" in the mailboxes drawer.
The only place an "On My Mac" named mailbox should be located is under Trash which is created automatically by Mail and used when selecting a message for deletion that is located in a user created "On My Mac" mailbox.
I don't know how the "On My Mac" named mailbox became available under "In" but since you cannot create mailboxes under "In" in the mailboxes drawer. Mailboxes under In, Drafts, Sent, and Junk are account named mailboxes only and are created automatically by Mail when the function is used by an email account.
She has an email account inbox which indicates
88 messages in it, but when she selects the account
inbox icon, there are no messages listed.
If a POP type account, using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account).
Within a POP type account named folder should be the following mailboxes in mbox format as follows:
    INBOX.mbox
    Drafts.mbox
    Sent Messages.mbox
    Deleted Messages.mbox
Junk.mbox (If Junk Mail is set to automatic.)
    And a MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded file.
    There should be no folders.
Before making any changes, post back listing what is available within this account named folder.

I cleared a conversation in my messages. I do not delete. How do I get all the messages back from this sender?

Clearing a conversation is the same as deleting the messages, so unfortunately they're gone. You could always restore from a previous backup, but you would lose anything that you've added/changed etc on your phone between the last time you synced your phone and now.

  • Mail app won't send mail to my .me or .mac account

My ISP is roadrunner in Rochester, NY.  On my iMac, running Tiger, my wife, in her account, can send and recieve email just fine using her roadrunner mail account with the mail app. The problem is that wen she sends email to my .mac or .me account, it doesn't reach me. There are no error messages and the mail successfully shows up in her sent folder. In comparison, I have my roadrunner account set up so that it forwards all my mail to .me. If she sends me mail using my roadrunner address, it reaches me.
Does anyone have any idea why her account is failing at sending mail to .me or .mac but works with everything else?

Most if not all internet service providers (ISPs) now block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP on Port 25 which is the default or standard port for SMTP servers.
Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only (such as the .Mac SMTP server) on Port 25 but some block its use regardless.
These restrictions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
.Mac's SMTP server and Gmail's SMTP server are what is called Password authenticated. I don't know if the SMTP server for your school's account is authenticated.
Do you not know who your internet service provider is which would be the ISP you use when connected to the internet at your apartment?
If you weren't having any problems before, sounds like all these different networks with different ISPs that you use to connect to the internet don't block the use of an authenticated SMTP server and if you send messages with all three email accounts when connected to the internet with different ISPs, the SMTP server for your school's account must be authenticated also.
Lets check the settings for .Mac's SMTP server. Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below.
The settings should be as follows:
Outgoing Mail Server - or SMTP server: smtp.mac.com
    Server Port: 587
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Can be selected or not selected.
    Authentication (Type): Password
User Name: The portion of your .Mac email address in front of the @ sign only.
Password: The account's password - the same password used to check the account for new messages.

  • How to use Mail to sent messages when away from home

How do I have to configure my "Mail" on my PowerBook G-4 (OS 10.4.5) in order to use it in a WIFI enviroment?
At home when connected via Airport to my own Outgoing Mail Server (smtp 8. sympatico.ca) I have absolutely no problems. However, last year I was on a Cruise Ship and tried to use the existing WiFi System. I could receive messages using Mail, but I could not send messages using Mail.
At the moment I'm visiting my son in the Boston area and I'm having the same problem. I was forced to use the Sympatico Web Mail in order to sent E-mail messages. (receiving mail using "Mail", represents no problem)
There has to be a way to configure Mail to originate messages and sent them as well, but I cannot find anything which tells me how to do that.
The version presently installed for Mail is 2.0.7.
Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated!
    Best Regards,
    Hank
    iMac 20 G-5, 768 of RAM; 12 PowerBook G-4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hank,
The problem here is your ISP (looks like its Sympatico) blocking connections to their mail server from computers not connected directly to their network. I wouldn't blame your ISP though b/c as I understand it almost ALL ISPs block these type of connections to cut down on SPAM being sent.
What you need to do is to find the outgoing mail server for the network you are on.
For example, if you look on the "Mail" settings on your Son's computer and note his "Outing Mail Server" (in the "Accounts" pain of "Mail" prefs) settings and then go to your machine and put in that same "Outgoing Mail Server" info then you should be fine.
You can do this on your machine by selecting "Add Server..." from the "Outgoing Mail Server" drop down menu. When the window comes up just type in the same settings your Son uses. If he does not have a machine with mail setup on it then you can call his ISP and they'll tell you.
Remember to switch the "outgoing mail server" back to your home server when you return home. By the way, most places (like hotels) will give you their outgoing mail server info if you ask them, so next time you're on a cruise with wifi you might try asking the IT people.
    Best of luck,
    Allen

  • Using Mail with both pop and imap accounts

I have a Q to better understand how the Mail app. works in Lion so there is better coordination among my devices and mail = I'd like to lay out how it is now set up and see whether or not I'm right about how to handle them - and how to do things better.
    1.  I have a .mac account and no problems with it = if I read and delete on iPhone it deletes off iPad and computer fine.
    2.  I have an email account that is an IMAP account but at another host [I use Mail to get email from it] - so what I think happens is that it's sort of the same thing but operating on that other host as an IMAP so that the same thing happens more or less - email comes in on all 3 devices and when I delete from one it deletes from others = but maybe not as fast because it's going thru the Mail intermediary.  My need/wish is to use one email program [Mail] to get all my mail and that's why this and others all go thru Mail.
    3.  I have a 3rd account that is a POP account and can't be made IMAP because of the nature of the plan/host - in that I've noticed that I'll have 100 messages on my main computer and delete 75 of them but the 100 are still left on the iPhone and iPad = so far I don't do much about it but I hope/assume I'm right to think that if I know I've read and dealt with the 100 messages that if I want to I can just delete them all quickly off the iPhone or iPad...I'm not sure how to handle a Pop account to minimize all the hassle.
Does this seem like the right way to go or is there a better way to manage these 3 diff. accounts ???  I noticed some of the problem when I checked Mail on my iPad and saw there were loads of old emails 'unread' on it that I had dealt with on my computer so I knew things were out of whack.
Last thought = I do go to Synchronize all Accounts from time to time but really don't notice it makes a difference but maybe I don't understand tht either.
    thanks much

Okay, it just fixed itself without me doing anything, or even quitting the program again. It still seems like a bug.
