Using Mail to mimic Gmail's "smart" reply-to behavior

I've done some searches with no luck yet. With Gmail, I have other email accounts authorized on my account. So [email protected] and [email protected] both forward to [email protected] But if someone sends an email to [email protected], when I hit reply it fills [email protected] as the "from" address automatically.
I'm now using Mail.app with Gmail IMAP on this account and the only way I can see to do it is to manually select the "from" field every single time.
Thanks so much!

> 1. Regarding the message, is that a problem with my employer's
server or something I did?
Most likely, you haven’t set up the account correctly. Are you sure it provides POP access and uses SSL, which is how you appear to have configured it?
2. When I compose a message in Mail, how can I choose whether it
is sent from my personal Mail account or my employer's account?
This is explained in Mail Help’s “Setting the account your email is sent from” article.
3. When I reply to a message, is it automatically sent from the
same account it came into?
This is explained in Mail Help’s “How is the "From" address determined in a new message or a reply?” article.

  • Using Mail Program with Gmail, Mail automatically bcc:s me on every email

I am using the Mail Program with my Gmail acoount. It works fine except Mail automatically bcc:s me on every email I send. I checked the Mail preferences and the box is unchecked in the composing section "Automatically cc: myself".
This does not happen when I use the Gmail.com web access, only when I send emails through mail.

  • How should I mark a message as spam when using Mail with IMAP Gmail

    Hi,
I've been using Apple Mail 3.2 with Gmail's IMAP for several month's and am very happy with the setup. One feature of Gmail that's great is the spam filtering, however, every day a couple spam messages get through the filtering. My question is this: What's the best way to train Gmail of a spam message?
Accessing Gmail through the Safari allows you to mark a message as Spam. I assume that Gmail then does something to train its algorithm that spam has been received so that a similar message will go direct to the Spam folder the next time its received.
I prefer to deal with my email via Apple Mail or via the iPhone Mail and have been moving spam messages to the Spam folder. Does this action do anything to train Gmail's spam filtering so that a similar message will go direct to the spam folder?
    Thanks

    Hello Hal:
I think you will get a better answer to your question by contacting G-mail. In my case, I use AOL mail in Apple's mail application. AOL catches the vast majority of spam/junk and it is placed in a spam folder. The few that get through seem to be trapped by Apple's mail and placed in the Junk folder.

  • Using (Gmail) IMAP account from 2 different Macs using Mail ?

Would it be feasible/useful to access an (Gmail) IMAP mail account from 2 different Macs using Mail on each Mac?
    My current situation:
    - My main computer is an iMac in my bedroom on which I use Mail for my Gmail IMAP account.
    - Sometimes (ex: late at night) I can't work from the bedroom and use a PowerBook and the web interface of Gmail. However, I don't like the threaded view for managing emails and therefore prefer the Apple Mail interface.
    Question:
Would it make sense that I use Apple Mail on the PowerBook to access the Gmail account instead of using the web interface?
    What would be the inconveniences?

Doing so is pretty easy, and standard. That is what IMAP accounts are for, and many computers can access the same account, and what email client they choose doesn't matter.

  • I upgraded to Firefox 4.0 on my Windows XP laptop, and now I can't compose mail or send reply mail on my gmail page. What do I do?

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0 on my Windows XP laptop, and now can't send reply mail or compose mail from my gmail. It just says "loading". I tried the repair using "about:config" and resetting default preferences and nothing happened. I updated all of my plug-ins and nothing happened either. What do I do now?

    Hi,
Tried compatibility mode on Win 7 and it did not help.  Will use Microsoft Word and Adobe Reader and convert doc to pdf as needed.
    Thanks anyway,

  • How can I use apple mail (linked to gmail) and get it to only do autofill on the contacts that I have in apple address book?

How can I use apple mail (linked to gmail) and get it to only do autofill on the contacts that I have in apple address book? Everytime I write an email on the Apple mail app (as well as in Gmail) it recommends a bunch of emails that are not my contacts. I want it to just autofill for the contacts that I have in my address book. Is this possible? Thank you. I have an Imac Intel version and an Iphone 5 phone.

  • Using Mail with GMAIL (Pop)

Has anyone experienced the following issue? I have set up my two gmail accounts to work with Mail on my new MacBook and for some reason the Mail program is not receiving all the mail. I know I am getting more mail than what is showing up because GMAIL is also set up to work with my blackberry. My BBerry will jingle with a new email message and then I'll sit there and wait for Mail to receive the message and it will never arrive. I have Gmail set up to work with Outlook on my Dell PC and it is working fine. For some reason all the bloody messages are not making it to my inbox on the MacBook and I can't think what it is. I'm using PoP on the Gmail end because the Imap seemed to slow.

Okay, things are progressing somewhat. Mail has now imported my messages on from my primary account and seems to be okay (using IMAP). I decided to add my secondary gmail account that I use for work related messages and that (also using IMAP) doesn't seem to be working so smoothly. So far Mail has crashed 3 times and had to "re-import" all 13,000+ of my messages. I have no idea why. Also, any mail sent to the second gmail account is not showing up in the primary inbox and isn't giving me a "new mail" notification via the red number that shows up in the top right hand corner of the postage stamp. Any ideas?

We use the Apple mail server to get e-mails from our gmail and comcast mail accounts. Recently we have been getting spam that claims to be sent to a gmail address, but when I check that address directly, there is no such e-mail, either in the inbox or in the spam folder. Is it possible to bypass the gmail account and send directly to the Apple mail server, spoofing the gmail address?

Maybe some info here for you about spoofing. (and much additional info)

  • Use Mail to send from a different account linked to Gmail

I use Gmail as my main personal email account and usually use with Mail via POP.
I also have Gmail set up to send from another account (my work address) which I can do by selecting a different "From".
This second email address is actually a MS Exchange Server mailbox, and I think the Gmail is just sending 'on behalf of' and getting replies sent to that address.
Is it possible to get the same results directly within Mail? (Not a huge problem if not, I can just log onto the Gmail website, but it would be nice to use Mail if possible).

    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-573678.html
I've had the same issue as you, and found this helpful.
Basically go into the Mail preferences and under accounts add the accounts (which Gmail gathers) that you want to send from to the "Email Adress" bar using a comma. For example:
Email Adress: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]
Then a drop-down menu will appear when creating/responding to mail that allows you to select which account to send from.
It can't seem to automatically respond to emails using the address it was sent to unfortunately, which Gmail cleverly does. But it's a step closer.
Anyways, check out the link. It was helpful for me!

  • I keep getting "Error 1046" messages when using Mail.app to send Gmail

The specific error is: MCMailErrorDomain error 1046
I'm using an early 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina display, running the latest version of OS X Mavericks. Nothing I Google brings up anything related to this, so I thought I'd pick your brains :-).
Any idea how to fix it? I've already removed & added the account. I'm using Postbox for right now, but I'd rather use Mail.
    Thanks!

I removed @gmail.com after my username at
    Mail->Preference->Accounts->(Select Account)->Outgoing Mail Server (Drop Down)->Edit SMTP Server List->(Select Account)->Advanced
And then it worked. I use Yosemite 10.10
Thank you very much for helping me resolve this annoying problem

I am using Mail 5.3 with two separate gmail addresses.
One is personal the other is business.
When I send emails from the BUSINESS address, any auto-replies/out of office notices I get come to my PERSONAL INBOX.
I imagine that this is a setting? Please help!

Edit the SMTP server list. Add a new one for the business account. Put the correct password and information for it. Give it a description so you will know which server is which. Mke sure the correct server is highlighted in the account selected and check the box to use only that server for that account. Do that for the other account also.

Until yesterday I was getting mail through my gmail acount on Apple Mail. I am now not getting any email. No settings have been changed, using a valid password. Any thoughts?

I found the following advice at: http://kb.mediatemple.net/questions/230/Common+issues+with+Apple+Mail#gs/not-rec eiving-email
    Not receiving email
Once in a while, your Mail.app (sometimes referred to as "Apple Mail" or "Mac Mail"), stops receiving new mail. You may be able to verify that you are getting new mail via webmail, another email client or computer, or even via a mobile phone. When this happens, the fix is extraordinarily easy!
Here's how: From inside the Mail.app, click the Mailbox menu (see Figure 1):
Choose "take all accounts offline", and wait 10 seconds.
    Choose "take all accounts online".
Figure 1: Follow these steps to refresh your Mail application.
You should begin seeing your new mail flow into your inbox.
    It worked!

  • Advice on archiving mail using Mail and Gmail?

I use webbased gmail most of the time, but I do have the Mail app set up through imap, mostly as a backup (so I can access my mail when offline, so if gmail ever accidentally loses all my email I'll have it, etc). When I first configured it, it downloaded all my old mail (I think). I'm pretty sure that includes attachments, sent mail, everything. The only problem is my hard drive is getting kind of full and I want to clear off some space by moving stuff to my external drive. I'm thinking about moving a lot of my old email to my external drive, but I'm not sure the best way to do it. Will I still be able to access it through the Mail app? Will removing it make the Mail app just want to download all those messages from gmail again?
Ideally I'd like to set it up the way I use two iPhoto libraries and iPhoto Library Manager, but I have no idea how to do something like that for mail.
    Help? Thanks!

I thought there were problems with POP downloading duplicate messages or failing to download messages, that's why I wasn't using it. Does it work ok with gmail's archiving rather than deleting thing?
POP does not mainain any syncing once the messages have been downloaded so you can just move or delete any messages from a POP mailbox without fear of this happening on the server.
What if I archived my current mailbox, moved it to an external drive, and then switched to Pop. How would that work?
that could work and is an option. you can set gamil to only download POP messages that arrive from now on. that's done in gmail webmail->settings->POP/IMAP. you can archive your current IMAP gmail mailbox. then delete the gmail account in Mail and recreate it as POP.
but as I said, another option is to keep gmail IMAP but change what it keeps locally.
If I wanted to open one of my old messages from the archived mailbox, what program would it open in?
you'd have to import the whole archive back into Mail.
Would it all still be searchible through spotlight (when the drive is plugged in of course)?
no. Mail archives are not spotlight searchible. if you want that option instead of archiving using mailbox menu->archive mailbox you can do the following. quit mail. then go to the folder homedirectory/library/mail. locate the gmail imap folder inside and copy it to the external. it will then be searchible via spotlight and you could open individual messages too assuming you do have all messages completely downloaded to the hard drive now.

I don't quite understand what you've posted. Have you cancelled your Gmail account?
If you've just connected Mail to Gmail, and you've used IMAP to connect to it, you'll probably have an "All Mail" mailbox towards the bottom left of the screen (under the GMail mailbox). In there should be a Sent Mail box. All your Sent mail should be in there. To have it appear in the Sent mailbox at the top left of your screen, highlight Gmail's Sent Mail mailbox, click the Mailbox menu at the very top of your screen, and click "Use this Mailbox for - Sent".
