Using MBAir as main computer?

Anybody doing this with external monitor and drives? Thinking of top end Air, 256GB etc with 27" display.

I have a 24" Samsung display that I connect mine to (at home & work) and at both locations I connect to a USB drive but that's for TimeMachine. At work I connect to the network and at home I have a NAS. But connected to the external display or not, for personal work the MBA is my main computer and at work the only thing I don't use it for is video editing. That's 100% due to not enough drive space on the SSD and the as yet missing reliable thunderbolt <-> firewire converter.

  • Thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?

We have a 2009 MBP, 2010 MBP, 2011 MBA, an IPAD 2, and several ipods.  Currently, my 2009 MBP is the main computer, holding all the music and pictures.  This has used up the majority of the available storage and definitely slows it down some.  I do back up the full computer to a backup drive and also remove the large movie files to another external drive.  I'm thinking about getting a new iMac to use as the main computer.  Has anyone done this?  What is your experience and recommendations?
I look forward to all responses.
    Thanks,
    Brad

Thanks for your response.  I look forward to hopefully learning something new here.
A good share of my music was added via my CDs, but now everything is added via itunes and occasionally amazon.  Almost all my pictures and video are added through my cameras via iphoto although I have added some with the 'add image to iphoto library' function also.

  • Partitionning iMac internal HD in order to use MBA as main computer?

I'm planning to use my late 2011 MBA (with the lid down) plugged to the Thunderbolt equipped iMac I'm buying now.
The MBA would therefore become my main machine (I'm actually replacing my actual iMac which is not Thunderbolt equipped. The new Thunderbolt equipped iMac will be used only for tasks I can't perform with the MBA and as a replacement machine in case my MBA goes to repair, right).
I would like to store all my data (pictures, films, websites projects, documents, iTunes & Aperture libraries, and so forth) on the new iMac's internal HD, the advantage being I could access the mentioned data at Thunderbolt speed without having to purchase an external Thunderbolt HD.
I'm thinking of creating 2 partitions on the iMac internal HD:
    - one partition for the iMac
    - a second partition the as my data repository I would access mainly from the MBA - and also from the iMac when needed.
    Hence my questions:
    - is it a good idea? if not, what could be the problem?
    - if somebody has a better solution, please let me know.

If your backup external drive has a power brick the Thunderbolt<->FW adaptor will work, many bus powered drives require more power than Thunderbolt provides. However you may be fine with USB. Your first TimeMachine backup will take a while, subsequent backups are shorter because they are incremental. I tend to connect my MBA to its external USB TM drive once or twice a day at home and the backup takes just a few minutes unless I install a big OS or program update. I strongly recommend against connecting the drive to your base station - for whatever reason at some point - days, weeks or months later - the backup session will fail and after that nothing will get it going again except formatting the drive and starting over. Apple doesn't support this form of wireless backup.
Take a good look at your current drive use and try to think back to estimate how your drive has expanded over the last couple years. Adding a larger drive to the MBA later is expensive and carrying around an external drive isn't particularly fun. Will 256GB be sufficient 2 years from now? Remember, you need to keep 10-15GB free for temporary files.
Finally, remember that a computer you carry around is at greater risk than the one sitting on your desk. A single backup drive is better than most have but two is better. A third kept somewhere other than the home is best. I like having one of those backups being a clone because I can boot up with it and get right back to work.

Help needed. I have a 3TB external hard drive partitioned into 1TB's. I used one partition as backup for the main computer hard drive. But now it is greyed out as shown in the disk utility and its name changed, i dont know how that happened, i tried verifying and repairing it but had no luck. I also tried mounting and unmounting it but still no solution. Anyone to help please?

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes apps and songs using my apple ID to our main computer which already has my husband's apple ID on

I have iTunes on an old laptop with my own apple ID for my iphone and ipod.
My husband has iTunes on our main computer with his own apple ID for his iphone and ipod.
I am shortly purchasing an iPad using my apple ID.
How can I transfer my songs, apps and videos from my iTunes onto the new computer using my apple ID, not his.
Is it possible to create a new account on his iTunes?
How do I ensure all my apps and songs come over from my iTunes?
I have searched on here and online but have not been able to get an answer.
    Thanks

    Thanks
Are you sure that if I use my windows log in rather than my husbands, then open itunes it won't delete all his hundreds of songs and overwrite with mine?
I want to maintain my own apple ID login and he wants his but without losing his songs.....
how do i transfer the content of my itunes including apps and songs to the new computer.  There doesn't seem to be an easy explanation on here. Do I just plug my iPhone in and it will all transfer?

  • How do I make it so that the one computer that has the main itunes account on it be used on other computers, when it comes to backing up phones and not deleting data off of phone that isnt on that computer itunes becasse its all on the one main computer

how do I make it so that the one computer that has the main itunes account on it be used on other computers, when it comes to backing up phones and not deleting data off of phone that isnt on that computer itunes becasse its all on the one main computer. Baiscally the problem is that one comuter and one account has always been sued for eey persons itunes. Now if we want to be able to backup and use itunes on our own computers fro our iphones and such, how will all he data that is on our phones not be deleted once its plugged into a new computer? Also, is theere a way to get all the stuff on thw current itunes onto each computer, via differtn account name?

option discovered in preferences. Really this and any feature that moves deletes or edits a users data should as far as possible be OFF BY DEFAULT. It shouldn't by default and without the users specific say do this dangerous and unnecessary thing without even letting the user know what it's doing!!! And then cause me a few hours (as i'm new to mac) searching for the option so as to switch it off. If i hadn't noticed the status cage declaring that it was copying files then i might never have twigged that this insane thing was occurring. And if i hadn't of noticed i would have been left maintaining the contents of the folder i copied the files to, the folder which as far as i was informed and so believed was also the location of the music files i was playing. How does Apple justify this 'genius' piece of software non-design? Surely it will hurt no one if this was off by default for new users - overall at least i dare say it would cause a lot less distress in the future for the unsuspecting public at large. Thanks for the support.

  • My main computer broke, can i use one of the 5 authorize computers to purchase and download songs

My main computer broke, and I want to know if I can still purchase and download songs to my apple devices using one of my five authorize computers? It is my wife's computer and she also uses itunes. Can I log her off and use my log-in?

Thanks for your reply, Niel. Basically, I can log in into my wife's computer, log in and download new music I purchased or from a CD into my ipad/iphone/ipod with out a problem since is one of my 5 authorize computers? Sorry for being so inquisitive but I'm not the best when it comes to itunes.
Will all my music load into itunes if once I sign in? or will it just load the songs I've downloaded from the itunes store?
    Many Thanks!

  • Using lightroom on laptop as well as main computer (Mac)

Does anyone know if you can use the same serial number to install on both main computer and laptop or is a separate serial number required .
    Thanks

I'm very interested in this answer too. More importantly, I'm running a mixed Microsoft/Apple environment and my desktop is still a Microsoft XP machine (Will change pretty soon tho).
I've always been able to run the same serial number for Photoshop on my Desktop AND my Laptop. But, I've understood that Adobe is very resistant to allowing people to run cross platform with the same licenses. AND, to make matters worse, the answer you get seems to vary with who you talk to at Adobe. Its like they have not really made up their minds about this.

  • How can I make another computer my main computer for sync use

my main computer is going to be the one that generates the change to book marks and tabs. when I first
set up sync I used a secondary computer not realizing it would be the main computer. how can i change
the status of the computers. now that all of my data has merged I need to clean it up and maintain it for
the new main computer. Thank you Miles

If your secondary system don't want to SYNC. then try the following method to stop SYNC
Type '''about:config''' in URL and search for '''services.sync.prefs.sync.''' and set the value as "fasle".

  • How can I use home sharing? (main computer)

Well, I have a Windows PC and almost on my music is in Home Sharing with my sister (her computer is the main computer, I'm pretty sure) . When her computer is closed, the home sharing disapeers.
Is there anything I can do so that I can always have home sharing or move the music to my music folder? Something like that?
    Any help will be appreciated!
    Thank you!

First, make sure you've got the home share set up on both computers, as per the following document:
iTunes: Setting up Home Sharing on your computer
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.

  • My main computer I have my itunes with died, I had all of my music there. I do have all music on an ipod nano but when I connect it to one of my other computers it wants to erase what is there, can I use the cloud to upload all my music from the nano?

My main computer died where i was keeping tohusands of songs, never had a icloud account to share with all my computers I authorized for my account. I do have just about all of the music ononeofmy ipod nanos. Can I set up a cloud account and then upload all of my music from the nano? Right now it will not allow me to "push" my musicfrom thenano to one of my working computers that I have Itunes on. What can Ido?

No. An iPod Nano has no internet access.
Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • I want to download the new software on my ipod touch on a different computer to what i normally use, but it keeps telling me i will loose all my downloads. Is it possible to make this computer the main computer to sync my ipod?

I want to download the new software on my ipod touch, on a different computer to what i usually sync my ipod to, and it keeps telling me i will lose all my downloads. i it possible to download the update on this computre, without deleting my information, and making this computer the main computer to sync my ipod to?

A manual backup will help in your situation.
Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your iPod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in iTunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
Apps can be downloaded again for free, in some countries music as well: Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Can I use same code to download on to my laptop/iPad as well as main computer. I have already purchased Elemenats12?

I Have bought Elements 12 on a software card from PC world. I have registered it on my main computer. Can I also download it on to my laptop/ iPad?

Laptop, yes providing it meets the technical specs required to run Elements
System requirements | Adobe Photoshop Elements
Download the trial version from the Adobe website, install then enter your serial number.
iPad, no. Elements will not run on iOS, the Mac mobile operating system.
The only way to get software on to your iPad is via the Apple App Store. There is no version of Elements for the iPad.

  • There are three apple iphone users in my household with one main computer.  How do I set up each iphone (and istore account) so that we don't corss sync contacts, calendars etc. also can i do this through icloud? so that

There are three iphone users in my household but only one main computer. I am the primary users and have all my business contacts on my iphone and computerr.  The other two in the household also have iphones with their own contact lists.  is there a way to set them up so that we can share some music but not contacts.  Aosl need to be able to back up their data which I presume would be through icloud and a separate iapple itues id.  how do I go about setting this up?

There is only one solution. Each user must have their own separate user account. All of their respective data would be contained in their separate user accounts. This also means each will have a separate iTunes Library. If you all use the same third-party apps, then each will have to purchase their own copies under their own Apple IDs. Some data sharing is possible. See:
iTunes- How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one
iTunes- How to share music and video
iTunes- How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
