Using MBP 15" with Griffin Elevator, Display is "wiggling"

Hi Apple Support Communitiy,
i just bought the Griffin Elevator for my MacBook Pro 15" late 2012 to work more ergonomically.
At the first view I liked the Elevator very much but trying it out I now see that the Notebook Display is "wiggling" while I'm e.g. typing at my wireless Keyboard on the same table on which the Elevator stands. The "wiggling" is not really disturbing except of FaceTime but my question is: Can the wiggling come along with Disadvantages for my hardware, for example that the hinges begin to slack or that my harddrive suffers from wiggling or is it just normal and all right for my MacBook?
Thank you in advance for your help,
regards
Niklas

YES. In contrast to the sedate and safe life of a desktop, a portable is much more fraught to damage. Just note that AppleCare needs to be purchased and activated while the base warranty is in effect. Meaning you buy the box when you have about a month left and hence don't have to plonk the cash up front.
Since you will inevitably have the joy of the Lion (or even the Mountain Lion if you don't purchase before the summer), I can now tell you that 64-bit fat cat does not run well in 4GB. At least not for normal use, much less for power use. So RAM will probably be the first order of the day, upgrade-wise. I just put in a Corsair 8GB upgrade kit that cost $45. Had I ordered mine with 8GB from Apple, that would have set me back $200. OR, I could have spent the $200 on a Corsair 16GB upgrade kit. Yeah, I know, Apple says 8GB is the max, but for the current model ("Late 2011"), the 8GB sticks work just fine, though they're still pricy. I'll stick with 8 for now (2x4GB).
Another thing to note is that the only way to get the antiglare finish is with the widescreen option. And that will add to the cost, unfortunately.

  • Unibody MBP owners with *working* external displays, please chime in.

I'm trying to determine if there's any use at this time to try to exchange the MBP (unibody) I have now with another unit in the hopes of getting proper external display support. (To be clear, I'm referring to the external display problems many of us are having, like in this thread, and this one, and others.)
I'm sure there are others suffering from this problem who are simply seeking another datapoint in determining whether or not exchanging one's unibody MBP for another are of any use at this time. So the question here is:
If you have a unibody MBP, and you are successfully driving an external monitor without issue (using the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter), can you kindly post the following information?
    1) External display model (manufacturer and model)
    2) External display screen resolution
    3) Any information about DVI cable, length, brand if applicable, etc.
    4) Have you confirmed proper operation in both 9400 and 9600 GPU modes?
    5) If you know, is your MBP equipped with the 9c84 or 9c85 built-in display panel?
    6) If your setup wasn't originally working, but now is working due to a unit swap or swapping out of the Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter with a new one, can you kindly note that?
Please do not consider yourself representative of a properly working external display setup if yours looks mostly good, with just minor artifacting--that is, for the purpose of this thread, please consider "working" to mean only perfectly normal operation of an external monitor from your unibody MBP.
Are all of the above points necessarily relevant? I don't know yet, but I figured it's best to try to get as much information from those who have working units, to try to determine what's relevant and what isn't.
Why am I asking this? Because I've already wasted enough time with this unibody MacBook Pro, now on my third unit, and I do not want to waste time making trips to the store to exchange units (and the time necessary for restoring to the new unit, etc.) if it's not going to help things. (The previous two replacements had nothing to do with this particular problem, and I didn't have my external display until the third unit, so have no idea if the previous two suffered from this particular problem or not.) If it seems that an exchange from one unibody MBP to another isn't going to help, then those of us who need to resolve this might learn more information with which to make a decision. Right now, I'm seriously considering exchanging for the current 17" MBP with matte display, even though it's not the new unibody design, and doesn't quite match up in the specifications with the new 15" MBP--I just need to get my setup working, and figure the older style of the 17" might be more tested and worked out.
Thanks in advance to those of you who fit the bill and answer these questions.
NOTE: If you have more relevant information to ask of those with working setups, please do; but please avoid the discussion of your problems if you're among the ones (like me) with external display issues, as there are other threads for the discussion of that (like the ones linked above). Ideally, I envision this thread as more populated by the responses of those with working setups.

  • How can I get a video signal using IMAC 27 with only mini display port. I like to send the signal wireless to a TV using a TV/audio transmit system.

I have an IMAC 27 with a mini display port ( only this). I also have all the adapters ( mini display port to VGA, HDMI...).
Since I moved to UAE I like to transmit the signal frm my IMAC ( where I also look German TV on) to my TV. I will do so by using a wireless Transmit receive system with theree cinch inputs ( transmit system ( video, 2x voice).
The distance to the TV IS ABOUT 10m and one wall. I don`t want to use a cable.
Is there any solution for example mini display to VGA + VGA adapter to cinch so I can use the transmit system?
HDMI would also be an optiekn, bat then I have to by another Transmit receive system.
If somebody made already the experience I would appreciate to share the information
Is there may be any store in UAE where to get support. It is very diificult to get good advice here. They sell everything bat can not reaaly explain and have very often  no technical knowledge. With this problem nobody until now can help me.

I don't know what AppleTV can handle as far as bit rate is concerned, but increase the bit rate as high as it will let you. You are taking DV which is 25Mb/s and compressing it. If you're making an H.264, you should get great results needing no more than 6Mb/s. Bear in mind, the higher the bit rate, the larger the file size.

  • Using my Macbook with an external display

I would like to buy this 23" LED display:

I currently have a Macbook 13" aluminum unibody with the Mini Display Port. I'm not sure what cable connector and adaptor I would need to use this monitor to its best potential. HDMI? DVI? DVI-D? VGA?? I have never set up an external display before.
I would also like to be able to use the wireless keyboard and magic mouse. I would like my Macbook to act as the brains and have it closed sitting under my desk connected to my display and wirelessly use my keyboard and mouse over bluetooth. Is this type of set up possible?

HDMI and DVI will give you the best picture. Here's the various types of Mini DisplayPort adapters on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_sc_2_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mini+ displayport&sprefix=mini+displayport&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amini+displayport
Yes you can use it in clamshell mode http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
After you get your MacBook connected to the monitor and both screens working in System Preferences>Display there should be an Arrangement tab on the MacBook screen. Do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. When you disconnect from the monitor your Menu Bar and Dock will automatically change back to the MacBook.

  • Using MBP Speakers with output

is there any way (like when im running xp) that i can have my speakers on as well as my external speakers?

To use an external display with your MBP in clamshell mode, you must have the AC adapter connected, as this Apple article describes:

  • How do I use a MacBook with a Thunderbolt Display?

I have a new Thunderbolt Display which I use with a new Mac Mini. If possible, I would like to attach my 2008 era MacBook to the Thunderbolt Display to take advantage of the bigger screen. I understand that MacBook doesn't have Thunderbolt and the Thunderbolt Display requires it, but...isn't there maybe, just maybe, some sort of Thunderbolt to USB2 cable or something that might make this work?
Help me, Obi-won, you are my only hope.

There are Thunderbolt adapters you can use for the type of video port on your MB:

    1 - Mini-DVI (VGA, Composite and S-video with adapter)
But you may need to upgrade its OS X version at least to Snow Leopard.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

  • Trying to use PowerMac G4 with HD Cinema Display

I am trying to use a PowerMac G4 Digital Audio with an Apple HD Cinema Display (23-inch). I bought the Belkin connector so I could connect ADC to DVI. When I start up the Mac, I get the startup screen, gray with Apple logo and spinning startup ball, but then it goes dark. Any idea what the problem might be? Could it be a video card issue?  Thanks!

If you get something like the linked HP, you will want an upgraded card, minimum of a Radeon 9800 Pro.
The DA can use numerous 4x AGP options, of which the best overall performer is a Geforce 6800 GT (flashed PC version).
The main issue with the HP is the newer 16:9 ratio, for which most old OEM cards have no firmware resolution support (only 16:10 was available in the day).
Use of some software like SwitchresX will be necessary with a newer monitor and older OEM cards.
OEM options are all listed on my page here:
    8923D90A-7AD8-41F1-BD1A-FEA5E1780B95.html
All performance options are listed here:
    4B4B7BA2-7ABB-47F1-87AC-B03D37942BEE.html
Like Jon said, if you upgrade your graphics card, your DA will love it (and you, in turn, will love the DA more).

  • Using my MacBook with a broken display on my tv please help!

My MacBook Pro has a broken display. I want to use it on my tv but when I plug it in using an hdmi I cable all I get on my tv is my wallpaper. I have read that I need to take my macbook out of extended desktop mode to actually use it this way but I obviously can't. Can Apple wirelessly do this? I don't feel like spending 20 dollars to schedule a call if they can't.

  • Using MBP screen with G5

is there a way of connecting my G5 to my MBP so that I can switch between screens on MBP?
as i want to get rid of the crt monitor.
    it gives me headaches...

Not that I know of, people often ask a similar question regarding the iMac and the answer is the same. Because the laptop has not direct dvi/vga in port there's no way for you to feed the signal from your desktop to the laptop's display.
If the crt is giving you a headache buy a new lcd display. Apple (of course) makes an excellent monitor, but if you don't want to spend that much money samgsung has an excellent display for a lot less $$$

  • Using your plasma with front row

I am currently using front row with a second display (plasma Tv). While viewing videos or photos, is it possible to turn of the Imac's display ?

select arrangement, you will see two dispalys, theone on the left has a white line across the top of it. this is the minu bar. drag it across to the other and there you have it. all videos/music/ photos etc from front row will be on the plasma and the imac display will be off.

  • MBP doesn't work properly with Apple LED Display

I wasn't sure if this should go in this discussion forum or the one created for the cinema display but this makes more sense.
Recently I've been using my MBP (silver with black keys) plugged into my LED cinema display docking station and it's really been acting crazy and not working correctly at all.
Yesterday the computer got stuck in a vicious cycle of putting itself to sleep every 10 seconds or so. I could wake it up with the mouse or keyboard but it would just immediately go back to sleep. I eventually had to hard shut down because it wouldn't give me enough time to do it the humane way.
Today I plugged my laptop into it and the mouse was messed up. The cursor was able to move but the buttons didn't seem to register with the computer. I would hover over the close/min/max buttons but they would't change and I couldn't click anything. The keyboard and everything else worked. Just not the mouse buttons. I had to restart to fix this problem.
Does anybody else have these incompatibility issues with a MBP and the LED Cinema Display??? I don't understand why it's doing this all of a sudden. I've had the display for a year, used it sporadically, and never had issues like this.

I think I may have discovered the problem with my computer getting stuck in the cycle of going to sleep after 10 seconds. It just did it again a minute ago when I plugged my MBP into the display.
I think it's related to the power plug not being all the way in. I have a case on my MBP which makes the power plug fit only one way instead of both (i.e. the direction the wire goes...towards the front or towards the back). When my computer wasn't working correctly previously I had noticed the plug was going back and forth between connected and not because it's magnetic and there's no secure connection into the plug's socket. So today I noticed the same thing. I adjusted the cords so it wouldn't be teetering and now it works.
    Go figure....

  • About to move from Windows to Mac. Considering purchasing retina display MBP 15" with dual boot system as I need some of my programs. How is the display in windows for photoshop?

Has anyone got any thoughts or have you yourself purchased the MBP with Retina display and added the dual boot system with windows?
I desperately need to update my gear and want a MBP.
I'm a full time photographer at my local paper and freelance photographer - use computers A LOT, and only use windows. I've experienced mac and know I prefer it, the way it runs pleases me a whole lot more and for the amount i'm processing/working I need something that will keep up.
With 12 years of photoshop gear loaded up for all my photo processing etc, I'm wanting to add Windows and have use of both. Windows would run photoshop that I had already purchased some time ago - question is, how will it run?  what will the display be like running Windows on Mac with the retina display?
I use CS4 at the moment and can't afford to upgrade to CS6 just yet, plus i'd waste a lot of what I already have by starting again on Mac. I'd use Mac for everything else, need the use of Windows for portions of what I do.
About to head to Canada and want to get set up for the road. Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks heaps!

There are some drawbacks, running Windows 7 (only) on a Mac via Bootcamp yields less than stellar results, especially with the Retina display.
And of your traveling, the Mac's high power needs (especially the Retina display) and lack of removable battery are going to be a serious issue. The Retina display is glossy, not ideal for viewing on the road and in varied environments.
CS4 won't run on the OS X version that comes with a Mac, so your looking at purchasing CS6.
Support for Windows is more widespread than for Mac's, also if you ever need to redownload OS X to fix a issue, requires a fast reliable Internet connection of the broadband kind.
If your running Windows on your Mac, you can expect to be on your own and not get support as easily as if you were running it on a regular PC.
If you can't afford to keep up with CS upgrades, then you shouldn't be considering a Mac because there are more paid upgrades on that than on Windows 7, it's like a annual nightmare.
IMMO your still better off on a decent,  1920 x 1080 res, matte screen, removable battery (with extras), Win 7 Pro i7 machine (Pro+ runs XP programs) which will stay like it is and get security updates until 2020.
OS X changes every year and if you don't upgrade, + all your third party software, then about 3 years later your left behind for updates.
Also you will have to buy Win 7 to run on your Mac, the OEM disks won't work.
If your trying to budget, then a Mac is certainly not for you.
