Using MBP in closed mode for extended periods

I use my MBP mostly in closed lid mode as a desktop computer and only use it as a notebook when I'm on the move. I was wondering, is this a bad setup considering that when the lid is closed it's covering up vents and holding heat in?

Hi,
I just installed Leopard on to my Macbook Pro (which is attached to a 19" Samsung monitor) and cannot get Spaces to work.
I was told it is possible to have Spaces work in closed mode though. I just have some concerns about keeping the MBP closed for extended periods of time, particularly when running programs that place a heavy demand on the processors (i.e. Second Life, Photoshop etc).
Is it not possible for the computer to overheat or for the screen to somehow get damaged with the top closed ?
I really want to use Spaces but it does not appear to work with dual screen set ups.

  • HT1657 I have rented 2 movies on apple tv. Both of them stop frequently by freezing on the screen for extended periods. My time is running out. I've yet to watch a film right through as a movie experience. Is this something that often happends? Is it fixa

I have rented two movies on appleTV. Neither play all the way through. Both stop frequently and freeze for extended periods. It has been more than 10 hours since I downloaded them. What should I do to watch a movie all the way through? My tv is a year old.

    Hello there billytea,
From what you are describing here, it seems as though we may need to look into the network configuration. Here is an article named Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Troubleshooting playback performance that I feel has great information about troubleshooting these types of streaming issues and recommendations to optimize it. You can find the article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3623. First a bit about the minimum requirements for streaming HD and SD content:
    Broadband Internet connection
For the best viewing experience when renting or purchasing iTunes content on Apple TV, you need a broadband Internet connection. A sustained 8 Mbit/s or faster Internet connection is recommended for viewing 1080p high-definition movies and TV shows, 6 Mbit/s or faster is recommended for viewing 720p content, and 2.5 Mbit/s or faster for standard-definition content. Internet connection speeds may vary depending on your ISP and other factors.
If you are not sure what your Internet speed is, you can ask your ISP, or use an online bandwidth test from a computer that is located on the same network as your Apple TV.
If your internet meets these requirements I recommend following the troubleshooting in the article.
If streaming performance issues occur even with a high-speed broadband Internet connection, consider these suggestions:
    Check your home network
Along with a broadband Internet connection, your Apple TV also relies on a high-speed local network to play media content quickly and reliably.Wireless connectionWired (Ethernet) connection
To connect Apple TV to your network wirelessly, Apple TV requires a wireless router or Base Station that is 802.11 a, g, or n compatible for streaming video.
Your Apple TV should also be within a reasonable range of your base station or router, and in an environment with minimal wireless interference. To verify the strength of your wireless connection on your Apple TV, from the main menu, go to Settings > General > About
If you continue to experience slow playback performance when viewing movies and TV shows, connect your Apple TV to your local network via a wired (Ethernet) connection. If streaming performance improves noticeably, then you should consider updating or troubleshooting your Wi-Fi base station or router.
If you are connecting your Apple TV to your network via Ethernet, you should use a 10/100BASE-T or faster Ethernet network.
If you continue to experience slow playback performance while connected to your local network via a wired (Ethernet) connection, consider contacting your Internet service provider (ISP) to increase the speed of your connection. You can also reduce the video resolution of the iTunes Store content as is described in the next section.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Can I use MBP 17" ac adaptor for my MBA 13"?

Can I use MBP 17" ac adaptor for my MBA 13"? Thanks.

Yes, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage then what is delivered with the machine.  Just don't use the MBA adapter on the MBP.

  • Where do changed data values goto if DB is in BACKUP mode for LONG PERIODs

Where does oracle write if put the database in begin backup mode for LONG PERIODs. Lets say I issued a "ALTER DATABASE BEGIN BACKUP" command in a busy database and forgot about it for a long time.
I understand that when the DB IS IN BEGIN BACKUP MODE, "the database copies whole changed data blocks into the redo stream." (Page 503 of 11.1 backup and recovery guide). But the redo stream is limited by the number of online redologs. After some time redologs also wont be sufficient for the changed data values after a begin backup is issued. I understand that there are archived redologs.
Lets say there are 2 redolog groups in this database and Lets say 10 archive log files got generated since the ALTER DATABASE BEGIN BACKUP was issued.
When i finally issue the "ALTER DATABASE END BACKUP" command, will Oracle sync the datafiles with the changed data blocks reading the data from these 10 archived log files ? What happens if i delete these archive redologs from the archive log destination. ??

Caution : If you fail to take the tablespace out of backup mode,
then Oracle Database continues to write copies of data blocks in

Any answers ? I am sure this question would have popped to some of you senior DBA people out there.

The redo stream is not limited by the number of of redo logs, only the volume of data. When a log fills up, it gets archived. If all the logs get filled up before the first one is finished archiving, the db will stall until the next redo becomes available. The only limit to archiving is disk space (and bandwidth if that is an issue, which it can be in some configurations).

You do not understand archive logs, read the concepts manual.

When talking for extended periods of time, will plugging in my phone extend battery life?

If you mean can you talk longer without running out of battery, yes, it will probably last longer.
If you mean will it have an effect on the long-term life expectancy of your battery, I don't know.

  • Issues with Shared Variables in Systems Running for Extended Periods of Time

I am designing a large SCADA system using LabVIEW DSC and cRIOs. My plan is to use shared variables to communicate the majority of the information across my network (much like "tags" in a normal SCADA system).
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced issues (connection failures, etc...) with shared variables running on systems for months (both real-time and windows based PCs) without the cRIO or PC being restarted/redeploying the variables. What is the stability of the Shared Variable Engine over extended periods of time?
    Thank you for the input.
    --CLD--
    LV 6.1, 8.6.1, 2011 SP1, 2012 SP1

I have a system with 2 cRIO's each with Ethercat extension chassis.  Each cRIO hosts ~100 NSV's and is running the scan engine at 40 Hz.
Each cRIO is coupled to a HMI that has front panel control bindings to NSV's hosted on the cRIO as well as a windows hosted mirror library (used for citadel db logging) that is also bound to the cRIO NSV library.  The cRIO's have monay months of contiguous run time without reboot and I closely monitor cpu and memory usage and also rt performance metrics and will log faults if there are any such events.  I also use NSV's for messaging from the HMI to the cRIO for such things as setting zero offset values and deploying configuration parameters.  My overall findings are that the SV engine and the PSP are stable and efficient (especially NSV<->NSV and NSV<->HMI binding)

  • Closing Stock For Each Period in Inventory Infocube

    Hello Guru's,
Can we have closing stock of each material  for entire period in Invnetory Infocube ? or through any logic or transformation routine can we create this keyfigure  at infocube level ?
I know that to get Closing Stock  ( Opening Stock + Goods Receipt - Goods Issue), we have to have Opening Stock as well for each month. in 0IC_C03 infocube, we only have Goods Receipt Qty and Goods Issue Qty keyfigures. We don't have Opening Stock and Closing Stock keyfigures as those are calculation which works during run time of query but still we want to have this information at Infocube Level.
Do please let me know your thought as i appreciate your help in advance.

  • 6500A Plus print jobs sit in tray, and do not print for extended periods

Printer is connected to two computers wireless and has been working fine. Recently began just sitting there after you click on print. Icon comes up in tray, but printer does not start print job. Often get pop-up message that says print job failed, after it finally prints the job. We sometimes have to wait several minutes for it to begin printing.

Let's set a static IP address for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Closing material for previous period (CKM3)

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem, which im going to close a material for current period with status "quantities and values entered".
But system wont allowed it, because the previous period hasnt close yet, and the status also "quantites and values entered"
Logically i need to close the previous period first.  But if i do that, does it comes with an inventory journal impact?
How if i just want to close for the current period only..
    Regards,
    Beto

    Hi,
First of all go to t code MMRV and check what period it shows there. If its a previous period then go to MMPV and close all the periods one by one.
Secondly check if your system has been  Configured for Price Change in Previous Period/Previous Year  in the IMG settings under MATERIAL MANAGEMENT - VALUATION AND ACCOUNT ASSIGNMENT.
    Thanks,

  • HT3131 In terms of cooling, is it OK to use demanding applications for extended periods with the internal display of my MacBook Air closed?

I'm using a Thunderbolt display when in the office and often run one or two Parallels VMs concurrently, which makes the fans spin a lot. I'm worried that the 13" 2011 MacBook Air isn't being cooled enough with the lid closed so I tend to open it up - am I just being paranoid?

The cooling of the MacBook Air is accomplished via an internal fan which draws in and exhausts air in the rear gap area below the hinge. This gap remains unimpeded whether the computer is open or closed. In fact, Apple has specifically designed the notebook to operate in a "normal" open screen configuration, as well as a closed (clamshell) mode. As long as you retain an adequate clearance and allowance for clean cool airflow at the rear of the Air, there is no recognized issue of whether the unit will adequately cool.
This does not preclude that the user can also "enhance" cooling with external conduction cooling devices designed to extract heat from the heat conductive aluminum case But in normal circumstances it is not required, nor even mentioned by Apple that it is necessary to do so. In fact, Apple even sells a stand for operating the MBA in a closed, vertical position for space savings. This does in face preclude use of a cooling pad, and still it is not a problem.
While there may be those who observe that the open case affords more surface area for direct case to atmosphere heat transfer, one must also recognize that this is probably more than offset by the fact that the device does not generate extra heat supporting a operting and lit display when closed.

  • Extend Verizon 802.11g router using AEBS in bridge mode for better reception by Airport Express at other end of apt.?

I connect to the internet using a Verizon FIOS router, 802.11g. The brand name is Actiontec MI424-Rev. D. I stream music from my MacBook Pro and/or iPhone and use an Airport Express to connect to my stereo receiver, which is wired to in-wall speakers. The streaming experience is pretty uneven. The Apple Store recommended an Airport Extreme to beef up the network. Note: this is an average Manhattan apartment, not a vast mansion, but there is lots of interference due to a couple dozen other wireless networks in my building. Which is the best way to set up the network for more robust streaming and fewer dropouts?

Ok, then let's start with the following as the basic configuration of your "single" wireless network.
The Actiontec will be the main Internet router; no configuration changes would be required.
Connect the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) directly to the Actiontec router by Ethernet; reconfigure the AEBSn as a bridge, and also, reconfigure the AEBSn as the "main" base station in the extended wireless network.
Connect the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), by wireless to the AEBSn. Configure the AXn to extend the wireless range of the AEBSn.
The following are step-by-step instructions on configuring the AirPorts for an extended network:
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
Temporarily connect the AXn directly to one of the available LAN ports on the AEBSn during the setup phase. Once completed, disconnect the AXn and place it at the desired location.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the AEBSn.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click Internet in the toolbar, and then, click on the Internet Connection tab. Change Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)."
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click on the Wireless tab.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the AXn, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Computer does not put itself to sleep when used in lid-closed mode

Hi. I'm having a small problem when using my macbook pro with the LED display, lid closed and with external keyboard and mouse. If I leave the computer unattended, the display goes to sleep at the time specified in system settings under energy saver. The computer, however, does not go to sleep - the white power indicator remains solid and noises for new email etc can still be heard.
I should probably just try to remember to put it to sleep manually but I keep forgetting. Does anybody know what settings I need to adjust?

I tried cycling the old battery many times, and the computer would still shut down unexpectedly instead of going to sleep when it ran out of power. I got a free replacement from the supplier [http://myworld.ebay.com/cbkusaelectronics>, but I have cycled this new battery twice now, and it still does not go to sleep when it runs out of power. The capacity of the battery is fine (4.9 Ah), and the timing calibration seems fine as well. I have two older batteries from NewerTech and they allow sleep every time, so I think my computer is fine. Can anyone enlighten me about the cause of this problem? Does my battery lack some 'sleep battery' cell in it for use after the other 4 cells discharge? Or does my battery lack a chip that communicates with the computer? Is there any hope of getting this battery to support sleep when discharged?
Has anyone else seen this problem consistently in a brand of battery? Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheaper battery that does not exhibit this problem? I have been happy with NewerTech, but they cost over $130.
(I only paid $44 plus $10 shipping, so I probably got what I paid for. It is maybe still worth it to have a high capacity battery for such a low cost, but I can't rely upon it in those last few minutes or I may lose work.)

  • MacBook Pro won't start after being powered off for extended period of time

Hi all, I have a 2013 MacBook Pro (OS X Mountain Lion) that I've owned for about fourteen months.  I have just been away for several weeks, during which time my computer has been left completely powered down.  However, now it will not start up again.  When it is plugged in, the startup sound will play, but the screen stays black.  The indicator light on the charger switches back and forth from green to orange several times.  The battery indicator lights on the side of the laptop all blink at first and then one lights up a solid green when the button is pressed.  I left it plugged in to charge overnight, but nothing has changed since yesterday.  After reading several other forums, I have tried starting it up using (ctrl+opt+shift+power) as well as (ctrl+opt+P+R+power), but I got the same result both times.  If anybody has any suggestions, I'd be very grateful.  Thanks!

    • Already tried that.
Yes you did, and you said so in your post. Sorry - my fault I did not read the complete post.
What model MBP is this? Removable battery?

  • Trying to use SCXI-1128 independent mode for 64x1. Demo doesn't correct issues

I'm trying to use the SCXI-1128 with the independent topology as both a 32x2 and a 64x1 switcher. I have no problems using it as a 32x2, but when I try to control the HLSELECT and 1WIRE relays, I get errors. I can see them as "open", but if I try to "close" either of them I get an error or a no path exists message. I've tried to use the demo from a previous post:
"How Do I Program the SCXI-1127/1128 in Independent Mode as a 64x1 Multiplexer?"
but it still doesn't allow me to utilize the 64x1 configuration. Am I missing something here? Why won't LabView allow me to connect HLSELECT and 1WIRE and how can I get around this problem? Has anyone had success with using the 1128 as a 64x1 m
ux. Just to fill in the rest of the hardware blanks, my communicating device is a 4060DMM and can only be used as a traditional device. I also have a SCXI-1331 attached to the front end of the 1128. Physically, I have a 1k resister from ch0+ to 1_wire_lo_ref and that's what I'm trying to measure with the DMM. As I said before, I have successfully measured voltage and resistance in 32x2 wire mode. Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Andy

Do you know of a good way to cancel the path resistance?
It sounds like you may have solved my problem here. I'll have to try this out and see. Basically what you're saying is I have to configure all the channels (using MAX) to 1wire. Then I can freely use the independent mode to make 1,2, or 4 wire measurements with full relay control??
If that's the case then you may ignore the following. If that isn't the case, let me describe what I'm trying to do.
I'm glad you pointed out that last piece of information. The reason I want to use this device in independent mode is because I plan to account for the 400 to 800 ohm path resistance of the 1128 (and not have to buy a 4070). I think I can do it, but I'd have to be able to use any channel (ch0 for example) as both a 1 wire and a 2 wire terminal (no need to do it simulataneously, I just have to be able to go back and forth). If I phyically connect ch0+ directly to 1wire_lo_ref and connect ch0- to my 1K resistor and then connect the other side of the 1k to 1wire_lo_ref, I am hoping to be able to determine the path resistance of the entire switch. In order to do this I'd have to take three 2-wire measurements. One from ch0+ to the ref, one from ch0- to the ref, and then I'd have to set up ch0 as a 2 wire terminal and measure the entire path resistance. By using the first two measurments I can calculate the parallel resistance of the ch0+ and ch0- and then I can do some math to cancel out the path resistance. Long story to come to my ultimate question, but I guess what I'm asking is:
    Can I use the 1128 in independent mode and configure ch0 as a 1 wire channel (i.e. ch0+ and ch0- with 1wire_lo_ref as a common) and then configure it as a 2wire channel(simply ch0)?
Here's an ascii of the circuit:
    |=== 1wire_lo_ref
    |
    Rpath(1wire)
    _____|___________
    | |
    1K |
    | |
    Rpath ch0- Rpath ch0+
    | |
    ch0- ch0+
    | |=============com0+

Thanks for the help, I hope configuring all channels to 1wire will solve my problem.
