Using MBP on soft surfaces

I usually try to use my MBP on a hard flat surface, as opposed to on a bed or sofa. Does using it on a softer surface make it heat up faster or cause any damage? Thanks.

All of the above is true. it's a common misconception that using a portable machine on soft surfaces is bad for heat. Using it on insulating surfaces is bad, as it'll heat up more, but anything that will conduct the heat away quicker is better for it. Just make sure that airflow around the back of it is good where the vents are.
Generally, hard surfaces allow some airflow to remove heat, versus the normal insulating couches or blankets that people curl up in during winter with their overheating computers!

Difference in sensor accuracy on soft surfaces (barkdust trails)?

I read in one thread that the sensor is less accurate on soft surfaces. I do most of my running/walking on barkdust trails. Some times the barkdust is so thick that you feel like you're sinking. But many, if not most, of the traiIs in Eugene, Oregon are barkdust and Nike is huge here, so I have trouble believing they didn't factor in soft trail surfaces.
Anyway, I'm just wondering, do soft barkdust trails reduce accuracy of the sensor?

I've noticed this as well on treadmills. At one gym, with treadmills that have a very slightly "softer" feel, my run graphs look mountainous, with variation between miles of 10-20 sec/mile, although the treadmill stays on the same speed throughout. At my new gym, which uses Precor machines that are noticeably more stiff (I can feel the onset of minor shin splints), the graph is like a straight-edge - almost uniform and perfect consistency throughout the run.
However, in the end, final results on both treadmills are within 0.1mi of the treadmills' readout.

Not a good idea. Such surfaces and material hamper air flow and ventilation without which the computer could burn up. Either turn it off or put it on a flat surface like a desk or table.

Yes, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage then what is delivered with the machine. Just don't use the MBA adapter on the MBP.

Menu Creation and Using the SELECT soft key

Hi,
I am trying to design a menu similar to the thumbnail menus available in most phone these days.what i want is a set of icons placed in a tabular format ie rows and colums. the joystick control can be used to navigate thru the icons and using the select soft key ie the middle button of the soft keys, the next set of forms can be displayed.
so far, i have created a form, used a few image item and used the Item's layout directive to arrange the imageItem as i want on the display. I can get the joystick to navigate between the imageItems however the select button doesnt fire any event.
I have added a command to each of the items and set an ItemCommandListener.
That approach seems to be working fine but it defeats my purpose. the reason being i had problems with the mapping of the command keys. For each display i had an option of going to the main menu and to the next screen. On the emulator it maps perfectly with the left key having the main menu and the right key having the "next form" button. But while implementing on the phone, the left key has the main menu but the right key shows "more options", when u click more options you get the "next form" button. This is happening in every form on display and makes it more tideous to use.
Thats why i was hoping to get the select button working if possible. Any help would be much appreciated.

It's possible that when you dragged those "non-iTunes" files on the iPod to the Trash, you did not empty the Trash. At least on a Mac, if you do that, the files are still on the iPod's disk (not visible) taking up space as "Other." You may need to connect the iPod with disk mode enabled, then empty the Trash.
Or, if you don't mind erasing it completely, you can do a Restore on the iPod in iTunes. The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes. That will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings. That should clear up the data under "Other."

Advice on used mbp for photo/ video tasks.

Good afternoon everyone. I'd just like to pick the brains of some of the experts here regarding purchasing a used mbp for photo/ video. for about $1300 (preferably less) which models would you look at? I'm open to 15 and 17 inch variants. The 13 is just too small. I've been trying to find a 15" with 2.4ghz and 16gb ram but they are very hard to come by in my price range. Is there going to be a huge difference in speed between a 2.2, 2.3, or 2.4 i7 quad core processor? I'm also aware that some models came with superior graphics cards although I can't remember exactly which ones.
one more question, regarding the high res matte screens, are these going to make my guis look weird? I actually had a 2014 13" mbp retina and was hugely disappointed in its performance and took it back. The retina display was not compatible with photoshop And made it look awful. This happened with some web pages as well. Is this going to happen with the high res screens available previous to the retina technology?

One last thing. Am I better off waiting/ spending a few hundred more and looking at more recent units such as a 15" retina? I don't like that the ram can't be upgraded and that they can't be repaired by the user as easily but the lighter weight is certainly a nice feature.

I suppose what I'm asking is whether there are particular configurations that were better than others that I should look out for. you illustrated my point when you mentioned your friend's older but faster mbp. I believe sometimes there are configurations that seem to work better than others despite one being newer or having 'faster' or 'superior' hardware. I'm aware of the advantages of ssd's and had one in my last mbp along with maxed out ram.
Regarding the newer mbp 13 retina model my solution was to take it back. I simply was not happy paying more for a computer that was more expensive but didn't perform as well as my older model I had just sold. Also the size was not going to work.
Out of interest can anyone explain these anomolies in speed between newer and older models. Logic suggests that a newer model with faster processor and more ram should be faster but why is this not always the case?
Here's my predicament: 15" mpb with 2.4ghz i7 quad core and 16gb ram and ssd are running around $1400 used. This is more than I would expect to pay for a mid to late 2011 laptop but they seem to hold their value very well. There is a significant price jump between say a 2.2ghz model and a 2.4. Am I going to notice more performance on the 2.4 or is it not a big deal to save a few hundred bucks? Or do I just spend a few hundred more for a newer retina model? I just don't want to end up with a computer I cannot upgrade or work on myself and that is not a significant performance upgrade from my last model And doesn't even have a SuperDrive or additional HDD. I hope that makes sense.
So with all that said and considering that I use my laptop for photography and small amounts of video are there any particular models anyone would recommend Around the $1300 mark? Or other suggestions?

In general, Adobe does not pre-announce plans or products... BUT... Adobe has their own site to sell Cloud plans, so my personal opinion is no, the Cloud will not be on the Microsoft store... just as Microsoft Office is not sold by Adobe

Do you have an external drive connected?
If you do has it gone into sleep mode? There is a setting in the OS to put drives to sleep if they aren't being used. Energy Saver "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".
Also most external drives have a built in sleep function that if they aren't being accessed for a period of time they go to sleep by themselves.

Tried select all, copy, paste into pages, but it didn't display date modified, size & kind, and also included images of selected files, which is too large.

I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:

In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

Help! Purchased used MBP with admin password, want to install OSX Leopard!

I purchased a used MBP with Tiger. The seller sold me a laptop with a password! I can log into the computer but I can't install programs (it asks for the password).
I don't have the original Tiger disks.
*If I purchase OSX Leopard tomorrow at the Apple Store, will I be able to install Leopard? Will it ask me for the password? Is there ANYWAY to get around this?*
*Do I have to buy a completely new hard drive to install to?* If I do I'll be really upset. I thought this was a good deal but I guess not if I have to pay for all this...

The machine is set to use "automatic login" that is why it does not require a password on boot up.
Boot from the Tiger Install DVD and choose Reset Password under the drop down menu on the top menu bar. You did get the OS disks with the machine, correct?
It will search the machine for all admin accounts and you can choose which one you want to reset.
And FYI, you always need the password of an admin account to install software. It is one of the safety features of OS X.
Installing 10.5 (Leopard) is your choice but it is not required to get you out of this jam if you have the 10.4 (Tiger) DVD. But you will need to boot from the 10.5 DVD and then decide what kind of install you want to do. If it was me, I would erase and install and start clean with legal software and applications.

It is not possible to delete an apple id completely. You can only delete information like credit card, adress, name... To do this, go to iTunes Store, click on your email adress in the upper right corner and enter your password. Now you can manage your account.
An apple id without password is not possible.
