Using MBP video out with with 2 adapters

I have the an early 2011 MBP (15'', 2.2GHz, 10.6.8). This video output connector this computer has is a MiniDisplay port (Thunderbolt digital video output). I often need to connect it to a projector at college. Most of these projectors still use serial (VGA) input.
My problem is, I don't have a MiniDisplay port to VGA adapter. But I do have a MiniDisplay port to DVI connector and a DVI to VGA connector (came with my previous 2008 MBP). I tried using both connectors but it didn't work. The MBP doesn't recognize the external display and doesn't allow me to output video to it.
Have anyone had any previous experience doing this (using two adapters to get video output form MBP)? Is it possible? Any ideas?
Thanks.

I've never tired it, it may work, or not. I'm not sure on the specs, but if the mDP>DVI is expecting a return signal, the DVI>VGA may not return one, in which case no signal will ever be sent out of the the MBP if it doesn't see a monitor attached.
A straight Mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor is available from Apple as well as store brands. My local big box store had both to choose from.

  • IPod Touch 2nd Gen Video Out Problem with Apple Component Cable

I'm trying to get video out working with my iPod touch connected to my TV. Here's the information.
32 GB iPod Touch 2nd Gen
    Apple Universal Dock (current version.)
Apple Component Out cable for iPod (current version that connects with a dock connector.
I've connected the component cables into the component video input on my TV. When I start playing any video (purchased off iTunes store in Standard Def,) I get a scrambled picture that appears to be the video, and no sound. I purchased the TV in South Korea and haven't gotten to test it yet on a TV back in the US. I have my video out settings with wide screen turned off and set to NTSC (South Korea uses NTSC.) I've also tried every setting combination, and switching the cable connections with the same or similar results. Sorry if a similar problem has been posted elsewhere, but after searching, I couldn't find any similar behavior. Any ideas on what might be the cause? I don't have any other component devices to check if the component on the TV is bad.

I've got that same problem: iPod Touch 2nd Gen, Apple Component Cables, and an HD TV.
The funny thing is, the cable works fine with an iPod Classic (160 GB) but not for the iPod Touch. Can anyone explain why that is?

  • MBP video out to TV using DVI - both analog and digital?

I have a Macbook Pro 10.6.4 2008 Model with details are below on graphics card and display options. I am trying two hookups to televisions which may or may not be possible. Can anyone tell me if my DVI output on the macbook pro is capable of delivering an analog signal to my old sony tube tv with component inputs? Second part of my question is do I have the right dvi cable. I purchased a cable with 24 + 5 pin. This cable does not produce a picture on my analog or digital television. Just snow on the analog and no input on the digital. The cable that came with my macbook pro is a DVI to VGA converter and seems to be an 18 + 5 pin plug....with a few pins missing in the middle. Should I buy another cable with the 18 + 5 pin DVI to component or buy a cable to connect the supplied DVI to VGA converter - VGA to component. Please help I'm confused on many fronts.
    Thanks

I made an account and am replying to this because i have the exact same computer as you and i was also at best buy at around 3pm wondering the exact same things you were! The DVI port on our MacBooks are different than the standard DVI ports. Freaking weiiiiiiiiiiiiiird! Get out of my head!!!!
I ended up buying a VGA cable and using the converter that came with my MBP because the DVI to VGA cables at Best Buy had a different VGA than what the MBP has.
Our goals were slightly different though, I wanted a cable so i can connect the MBP to my Toshiba 42inch HDTV. VGA works but doesnt support 1080p, only 1024x768, which is not a fullscreen resolution. So i will be returning the VGA cable tomorrow and looking for a VGA to HDMI cable, if that exist.
So, to answer your question, YES, buy a cable that has the same ports as our adapter, or just use the adapter that came with the Macbook.

  • CAn I use MSI Tv-Out card with my ASUS

Asus has no optional Tv-out card or sth like that.(I'm using the ob GF2MX)
Can I use the MSI tv-out card with my Asus a7n266-vm or it is just for MSI nforces.
Here in Turkey it is 17US$+VAT.Is is high or normal?

Hi...I did a little price search on internet before, for msi`s tv-out card...Its even selling with a price of 22$ in usa...So Turkey`s price is good....But I dont have any idea about it works in asus boards or not....But My friend bought the addon card for his msi board and It doesnt have any markings like it only works in msi boards n its manual....I think ıt should be work on other nforce boards....Just a reminder...He is unhappy with the tv-out adon card...because somehow detonators detect it but doesnt lets you play with tv-out settings in advance display settings section....You got tv-out screen , nothing more....No output on start-up the computer(Post section)....Only with windows....You need programs like tv tool for tweak its settings...

  • Using s-video out on my Satellite L300D-13Y

    Hello there,
i hooked up the laptop with my tv using a s-video cable (4metres) and a s-vhs to scart adapter.
I chose the s-vhs input on the tv but when i choose "extend desktop to this monitor" i get the "do you want to keep this setting" confirmation dialog but the checkbox is automatically disabled. the tv doesnt show anything.
in the screen chooser it got the two options
    1. pnp monitor (standard) with ATI mobility radeon HD3650
    2. not-pnp-monitor (standard) with ATI mobility radeon HD3650
    i got windows vista.
Sorry for the poor translations my OS is in german.
    Other questions:
What options do i have to get a s-video in and HDMI out on my machine, i only got s-video and VGA out.
    thanks a lot

    Hi
If you connect the notebook to TV using s-video cable then you have to choose TV icon (and not external monitor) using the key combination FN + F5.
    >What options do i have to get a s-video in and HDMI out on my machine, i only got s-video and VGA out.
This is not possible you cannot convert the analog signal in digital signal (s-video= analog; HDMi=digital) this is no possible.
You can convert digital into analog but not analog to digital.
You can try to use an VGA to HDMI converter. Google for that!

  • IPod Touch video out broken with 3.1.3

Anyone else experienced this? I updated to 3.1.3 this afternoon, and now when I plug my iPod into the dock in my LG Home Theatre the iPod displays a message about it not being compatible with that accessory. I get the same result when trying to output a video using the Apple branded component iPod cables.
47 hours remaining on the movie rental -_-;; would like to watch it on the bigger screen.

Downgrading the iOS is not supported by Apple.
What cable are yu using and what is the source of the videos?
Have yu tried another app that supports TV out?

  • Video out problem with Dynex 32" 720p TV

Hi folks.  I bought my new Dynex TV a few days before New Years.  It's great, really sharp, and I've had no problems with it.  However, I do have a DVD recorder so I can record my games.  Tonight, I attempted to use the A/V output on my TV and connected them to my DVD recorder (which plugs into my computer).  I clicked "capture" and got an error telling me that a connection could not be established and that I should double check my cables.  I could hear the audio playing through my laptop speakers just fine.  I couldn't see the video, for some reason .
It's not the cables, I just took them off of my old TV to use them here.
What can I do?  Should I return my TV?

What about output from a gaming console, like a PS3? Is that only digital sources or does it matter how the PS3 is connected to the television to determine if's its a digital or analog signal?  Right now I get no output when I try to send the video of my PS3 to my composite video in on my computer's TV tuner card.

  • Using HDMI video out on iPad 2

Quick question that it seems to be hard to search the answer to (everything leads to Airplay or video playback...)
    - Can you enable video mirroring to a TV connected with the HDMI adapter from an iOS Air App?
    - If so, what's required to make this work?
    Thanks!

I tried those things. If you're using mirroring, then you see either a 4:3 or 3:4 copy of the iPad screen, and it's safely in from the edges of the TV screen. Probably to be compatible with old CRT TVs. If you play a video in Safari, it will initially be in the same mode, but if you touch the full screen button, the video zooms up in a mirrored state until the moment that it becomes full screen. Then the internal display on the iPad just shows the controller, and the TV shows the 16:9 video right out to the edges of the TV.
If you're using StageWebView, or the native player, from a Flash app, I think it would behave the same way.

  • Gray display using S-video out on Satellite A200-24B

    Hello every one
I have Toshiba Satellite A200-24B , provided with S-Video port,
when i connect to my TV, at always display in Gray scale mode ( No colors )
I tried to use other Cable and other TV, but still with the same problem.
the cable i used is S-video to video (A V).
anyone have an idea for this problem ????
    Thanks

    Hi
There are different reasons why you get only a black/white picture on the TV.
I had the same issue because I used a s-video-to-scart cable and the pin assignment didnt match with the TV port pin assignment.
But the same cable worked in another TV.
A second reason could be the wrong PAL/NTSC setting.
    Please check this!

  • Using the video out on an iMac...

Can you disable the iMac's monitor?  I have the iMac connected to my TV, but I only want to use the TV as a monitor.  It looks weird having the TV and the iMac showing the same thing, and I'd rather turn off the iMac display.

Is this for the iMac in your signature?  Because if it is, you are asking about an Intel iMac, not a PPC iMac.  The Intel iMacs have the option of extended desktop which lets you put anything you want on a second display.  Just go Apple menu -> System preferences -> Displays and uncheck Display mirroring.  This way, your iMac's display can have a wallpaper of your choice, where the attached TV can be its own thing.

  • Visual blurring with video out

I am using the video out to a 22" CRT monitor and am seeing a lot of blurring. I use the same monitor all the time with my desktop PC and have no issues. But when I run it out from my Power Book I see all images repeated a few times, slightly to the right. Not sure the best way to describe it, but like little echoes of the image repeating to the right and fading. They are close, and only repeat a few times, but it makes for tough reading and difficult detail work for the fuzziness.
Is there an easy solution for this? A hardware repair?
I am using the converter that came with the Power Book (not a digital connection on the CRT).
    Thanks.

I am still having this issue. Am I the only one? Any ideas for solutions? I have tried different resolutions, different refresh rates. The monitor is fine, it works great with my desktop. But when I switch to the G4 I get these repeated images. Each icon, line, letter, everything is repeated and fades away to the right of the original.
Thanks for any thoughts here. It is very frustrating doing any kind of reading or detail work.

  • Possible to charge iPod while using Video out option?

I've read that you can use video out while maintaining its charge by simply 'ejecting' the iPod from Windows (but maintaining the physical cable connection).
But what about using a generic wall charger? Such as this one:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009T81YE/qid=1146811575/sr=8-1/ref=pdbbs1/103-4014541-7815810?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=301185
Or even using apple's official wall charger? With one of these pieces of equipment is the iPod locked in "do not disconnect" mode? Or is it free to be used?
I hope someone can get back to me soon! Thanx
      Windows XP Pro

using the wall charger does not put up the "do not disconnect" screen. thats only wen its connected to a computer. so yes u can keep ur ipod on charge while using the video out.
