Using midi drums and Logic sounds

Hi guys
I have been looking at the different softwares to use with my Alesis DM10 and Logic Pro X using the USB as when I currently record it just catches the midi notes and no sounds
I have seen BFD, NI Drums and the various others but they cost money and would like to use built in sounds to logic, is this possible or can I map the midi to Drummer at all ?
OR if anyone has any other bright ideas
thanx in advance

Hi
Drum Kit Designer  includes several different note/CC mappings:

If this doesn't do it, you may need to remap the source module, or remap the MIDI within Logic

Actually I have found a way for at least the instrument plug ins to be accessed.
I was able to set up an instance of Sculpture in MS2 and record it in LE using Soundflower.
Route the audio from MainStage to Logic and record onto an audio track in Logic as follows:
If not already installed, get SoundFlower. After installing it.
    A) Setup the sound you want in MS2 and audio output to Soundflower (remember to Apply Changes or it does not hold).
    B) In Logic Express set the audio input to Soundflower and create a new audio track for recording. Important: set Soundflower's audio output to however you listen to your audio or you won't hear anything.
    C) Press RECORD and start playing, LE captures Mainstage's sound.
I have not tried to wire LE's output to MS2 to take advantage of Space Designer. but since this functions, I'm not sure why that couldn't work as well. It is still flipping though a few screens though...might just be easier to get Logic Pro from the App store....

    Hi, Nurlynn.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would need clarification on this issue to provide a better answer.  However, here are a couple articles that I would go through when experiencing issues with the Mic and Camera.

  • Using main stage and Logic Pro at same time?

    Hi all,
Is it possible to use Mainstage to play sounds and at the same time take the sounds and with a Firewire mixer record the out of mainstage into Logic Pro? I'd like to do this internally without using an additional soundcard.
I could use my FastTrack Pro to control the sounds in Mainstage and then use the Outputs of the FastTrack Pro to feed into the Firewire Mixer and then Record the performance in Logic Pro.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Earl Green

yep ... I do it like that all the time.
Soundflower is your friend for piping audio out of mainstage into an audio track in Logic.
    http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/
To capture midi, just create an empty software instrument in logic and leave it record enabled (i.e. uncheck "open library" when creating it, and then just never select a software instrument to go on the track). This will record all the midi messages you send to mainstage.
Granted, that only gets you so far. Playing that midi track in Logic isn't going to make any sound until you assign a software instrument to it, but it can be handy.
A lot of times I'll record jam sessions with my band this way. Usually I'm playing pretty simple patches. 90% of the time it's just the Steinway samples, or NI B42 for organ stuff. If we do something particularly brilliant, but I flubbed the keys, I'll go into logic and manually assign whatever patch I was using in mainstage to it, then edit the midi.
You could, in theory use something like the IAC device to route midi back OUT of Logic, into MainStage (and then capture the audio out of mainstage back into logic with soundflower). Essentially making MainStage into one big software instrument in Logic. I've never tried it, but others on this board have posted about doing this before, and I don't see why it wouldn't work.
I really wish Apple would just setup Mainstage to work this way out of the box. It'd be an incredibly powerful tool.

  • Has anyone had a problem using Mainstage 2 and Logic 9 with PreSonus fire studio Mobile?

I Still can't get Mainstage and Logic to play well with my setup. I'm using a Mac Pro 2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB ram and Logic 9.1.6 and Mainstage2. I have a PreSonus Firestudio Mobile and M-Audio Midisport midi interfaces. The only Midisport that works consistently is a MisiSport 2X2 sith a thru/merge switch set to merge. I am playing all of this with a Roland A-90 keyboard. Logic sometimes starts, but the audio interface doesn't work. Mainstage crashes on start-up. Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hi
There have been several reported issues on this forum about problems a) with Roland controllers (Sending MIDI Clock and 'All Notes Off' ???), and b) MIDSport interfaces

I suggest that you try a 'scientific' process of elimination:
Disconnect all external hardware, and try MS
Connect the hardware singly, one at a time, to determine which is causing the problem

  • Using Motu DP and Logic Together - More use of all cores on the PPC Quad

Since there's been some talk about how DP uses four cores on the PPC quad lately I thought I might add what I've been doing to take advantage of untapped processing power. If you have DP (I am running 4.5) you can run it alongside Logic Pro and use interapplication midi (built into Logic and DP) to play Logic's instruments from midi tracks in DP. This is fairly easy to set up in the environment.
With all of my audio recorded in DP I can use all my nice AU plugs there and benefit from DP's use of 4 cores - something I can't do with just the "node trick" in Logic. Logic is then just playing the role of audio instrument slave.
I tend not to like or use most of Logic's processing plugs for audio, but they are fine to process Logic's instruments with so this works well.
The exceptions are Space designer and the tape delay which I still use on recorded audio. To use these with audio recorded in DP I use Jack and/or Soundflower to virtually "patch" the audio through Logic and back to DP. I have no idea what this does to latency but who the heck cares with reverb and tape delay?
Of course I have and like DP so this is worth doing in my case.

Jack is more flexible than Soundflower. The latter sets up less output channels that afford you less possibilities. But, both have worked for me.
True that, in the beginning Jack was a little funky to use but that ended when I set up an agregate device driver for core audio.
As a new feature in one of the Tiger updates (I can't remember which one) you can now set up such a so called agregate core audio device and select that as your device driver in both Logic and DP. So for example I use a MOTU 828 as one of my tried-and-true firewire in/out boxes. So I setup an agregate device in core audio with this Motu unit and Jack (called it Motu 828/Jack OS)and then I selected it in Logic and DP. Otherwise I just had to select Jack (and not the MOTU) as my only output device in Logic and then route ALL audio through it just to get it in and out of the MOTU which was a pain since I couldn't have direct acces to my Motu ins and outs in Logic anymore. Jack became the go- between for everything. That was enough to make me give up.
But using the agregate device saved the day. I now see all of my old MOTU ins and outs in Logic and DP plus Jack's virtual ins and outs which I can then use to patch between the programs. This has worked perfectly fine.
Soundflower can be used similarly but you will just have less virtual outs and ins to deal with and you lose the intermediate step that you have in Jack where you connect the virtual ins to the virtual outs at will. It's done automatically. So this can be easier of course. Or, it can allow for less flexibility. Hope this helps.

  • Using Midi Mic in logic express

I recently bought a midi microphone and when I go to record, I cannot hear the instrumentals through the headphone. it is only letting me use one device at a time. When I choose to hear the music, I cannot record and the other way around. Someone please give me a solution. thankyou

You have to create an aggregate device:
    1. launch Audio Midi Setup;
    2. select the Audio pane and under the menu Audio choose Create Aggregate Device;
    3. in the new window type a name for your device;
    4. add (with the + button) the USB mic and activate Input;
    5. add internal audio and activate Input and Output;
    6. open Logic and, in the Audio preferences, choose the new created device;
    7. choose the right inputs and outputs.
    cheers

  • Faint distorted mid range and vocal sounds

My Ipod touch will not play clear vocal and midrange sounds instead producing them faint and distorted. This happens when using the headphone jack, bluetooth headphones and the built in speaker sound clear and normal.Changing the headphones has no effect.

Your headphone jack is bad. My iPod Touch had the exact same problem. I tried swapping out headphones, playing the songs on my PC didn't have any problems, the built-in speaker worked fine, I reloaded it, I did a reset, still not working. Finally I called Apple Support. They talked me through a number of things but still not working properly, so ultimately they had to have me send it back and they sent out a replacement. New one is working fine. Fortunately I had three weeks left on my warranty so shipping both ways was free and easy. Good luck!

  • Exporting Band In A Box Midi drums to Logic

I am trying to export Band In A Box midi to Logic Pro. I did the export, then imported the midi into Logic and I could define reasonable instruments, except for the drums, which were totally garbled and the midi note assignments simply didn't match anyting expected. But, the exported midi file plays fine in the Quicktime player, so I decided to try the Quicktime Instruments profile. This seems to work, but it's VERY quirky, with instruments seeming to change inexplicably. For example, the acoustic bass turns into a piano. It just seems buggy. I've had the piano inexplicably change to a synth too. There doesn't seem to be a way to reset it to the piano instrument when this happens.
But, the better way may be to figure out how to map the drum sounds correctly into a regular Logic drum kit synth.
Anybody have any ideas how to solve this?
    Thanks.

make sure the midi track you are going to import to has the 'no transpose' switched checked. Otherwise, Logic will sometimes try to transpose according to the chords in a song...
I'm not clear why this still happens sometimes. But turning the no transpose switch on should work. Make sure your using a GM drum instrument. All the ones that come in EXP are GM.

  • Can't use .mid file with Logic Pro 9

I've been given a .mid file from someone I know but I'm not having any success trying to access the file in Logic.
The file should just contain a piano piece he had written.
When I first downloaded the file it automatically opened with QuickTime Player. I closed this then tried various ways of getting it into Logic. Firstly I went to File > Open, and chose the .mid file. This was the result:
"Damaged project or not a Logic Pro project!
    "Search for fragments?
"Damaged projects might create problems and crashes!"
    'Search' or 'Cancel'
When I click 'Search' I'm told:
    "Read error!
"This is not a Logic Pro project!
    "No tracks found"
    'Continue'
So, is the file empty (no tracks found)?
Or, because it was not created in Logic, it can't be opened in Logic. (I think he is using a PC, not confirmed yet - I also don't know what DAW he's using, yet)
That's ridiculous though, I thought MIDI was a universal language?
I also tried dragging the file straight into a Logic project, which tells me:
    "No tracks found"
Can someone please give me a little hand!? Thank you

Two ideas, have your friend check and make sure the mid file plays on his/her system.
    and/or
If the mid file checks out good on his/her system have them compress (ZIP) the file and resend as it could have become corrupted during transfer. It can happen.
Your description of the file (zero length) sounds like it missed the last few bytes.

  • Triggers and control unit between drums and Logic

I have to purchase a trigger set and a trigger control unit to put on a Ludwig drum kit so that to connect to my Stylus RMX sets on Logic thru my AMT8 interface. I have heard about Ddrum for the trigger set, and for the control unit?..
    Any advice?
    Thanks

the d4 is ok, but unable to load in your own samples. the d5 has this option, but is discontinued. The Yamaha RM50 is my weapon of chioce and is leaps and bounds better in sound quality and options than anything I've seen from Alesis. Great audio out options, and of course, all the MIDI you need, plus the ability to load samples with a memory expansion, and ability to trigger sounds from any card in the R series synths. meaning, load a card for a bass guitar and trigger that from your kick drum, load some string and fx patches and trigger those from your snare. endless possibilities. Check out the RM50, I love mine and highly recommend it.

  • Using Midas console with Logic

    Hello,
I am kinda new to Logic and have a question. I am using a Midas Venice 32F console with Firewire output to record all 32 channels into Logic. Today, I tried to send those same 32 channels back through the board, which Midas will allow, but I could only get Logic to send a stereo signal. I set everything that I could find (audio/midi setup, Logic output, sound output) to reflect the Firewire connection as the output device for the program and the laptop. Still only a stereo send? What really frustrates me is that Reaper, the free solution, will do this with no problems which means it is a software issue and not my laptop or the board. Please help.
    This is my equipment...
15" MBP with Intel chip and 8 Gb's of RAM running Mavericks
    Midas Venice 32F console
    Logic Pro X
    Thanks again for the help.

For all of those out there having the same issue with Logic Pro X. I have figured it out and finally got around to making a video of how to make it work. Here it is so you can check it out, share it, comment on it, whatever. Thanks for the help in getting this issue solved.

  • Does anyone use MIDI loops in Logic Pro to compose music?

Seriously, if anyone out there uses the MIDI loops to compose music in Logic, how the heck do you do it? Especially if you are also using audio loops, it seems almost impossible to me. The chord transpositions that you get from the chord track are not even to the right pitch, and the transposition behavior is different according to whether you drag the loops into the arrange area before or after putting the changes in the Chord track. The signature track is no better, as it doesn't seem to affect audio loops. So how do you get the bass loops etc. to play in the keys you want them to without going through extraordinary contortions? I looked at one of the Logic Pro books, and it said to transpose by using the transpose function in the inspector, but that only lets you transpose by octaves! Do you really go in and edit the loops by hand to transpose each note?
Any pointers on this would be greatly appreciated.

    kent swearingen wrote:

Put the mouse pointer on top of the transpose number, which is zero, hold down the left mouse button and drag up or down to transpose by steps. At the beginning of either the getting started or Logic manual there's an explanation of the different types of mouse/key behavior, if you're not used to using Logic it's a good idea to go over these.
Also, Logic does not always use simplified Mac conventions (thank the stars for that), as a result you have a lot more variety of data input, it varies according to the task at hand.

  • Communication problem between USB MIDI keyboard and logic

Haven't used program in a while, but ready to record a bunch of new stuff and when I started up Logic I cannot get my keyboard to send logic a MIDI signal. I don't ever remember having this happen before. I have always just plugged my keyboard in through the USB port and it works fine but there is no signal at all in the transport window where it says 'no in no out.' Usually whatever chord or note is played is read here as well as note velocity. I thought I could troubleshoot this on my own but I'm stumped. The only thing I can think of that might be the problem is that I have upgraded to 10.5 from 10.4 since the last time I've done any recording. I also have an older version of logic (7) but I don't want to upgrade as I (at one point anyway) was pretty familiar with this version and I have the book to this version. Please help!
    Thanks

That seems like the most likely reason that it doesn't work now - you don't say what kind of keyboard it is, but I'd look on the manufacturer's website to see if there's a 10.5 compatible driver available.

    Hi,
I have a mac mini mid 2011 with a 2.7HGz intel core i7 processor and 8 GB of RAM. I have been using Logic Pro 9 in 32-bit mode and tried switching to 64-bit mode. I unchecked the "open in 32-bit mode" in the "get inf" section, but logic still opens in 32-bit mode.
My question is: Can my computer run Logic Pro 9 in 64-bit mode???
    Thankyou!

    Hi there jdtay2,
It looks like your model of Mac Mini does have a 64-bit processor according to the article "How to tell if your Intel-based Mac has a 32-bit or 64-bit processor"

As far as opening Logic Pro in 64-bit mode, you will first want to make sure that you have the most updated version, as 64-bit support was added in the v9.1 update. The article below has more information about Logic Pro and 64-bit mode.
