Using MIFI with airport

Has anyone figured out how to use airport extreme with Verizon's MIFI devices to extend a wifi network?

Hi smokymtntraveler, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
Try this cure for Security update...

The locations are actually...
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.nat.plist
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

  • Cant use skype with airport extreme

i am exploring the idea of using skype for calls to canada from my iphone and eliminating my land line. i subscribed to the service and am having difficulty with connecting via wifi at home over airport extreme. Getting a connection seems to be hit or miss. i was connected a couple of times. i read in the skype support pages that airport is a closed network and will not support a skype connection. i found information about opening file sharing and modifying some port access. before i start playing around with that, i thought somebody out there has figured this out.

I don't know where you read that, but I'd question the source. The term "closed network" in this context is a non-sequitur.
Skype works fine with AirPort, even the older 802.11g version. It requires no special configuration. I haven't used it with an iPhone, but Skype worked with an iPod Touch (no mic though ) and runs fine even on my ancient G3 iMac. I'd speculate your internet connection might be too slow for reliable voice communication, but it is also possible the wireless connection to your iPhone may be a limiting factor.
What kind of service do you have?

  • Can't Use Safari with AirPort Internet Sharing Switched on

Happy New Year All (for tomorrow).
Just got an IPod Touch and a brand spanking new G5 iMac with AirPort built in (and what a beautiful machine it is...). I have switched on Internet Sharing i.e. "Internet Sharing: On (Sharing your Built-in Ethernet connection)". At the moment, I'm taking my ADSL into the iMac via a DSL Modem Router and then ethernet cable into the back of the iMac (until I get a wireless modem router). However, my iPod touch doesn't seem to be able to connect to share the internet connection over AirPort. A couple of nights ago, it connected and worked fine for about ten minutes then gave up. I haven't been able to get it to work since.
The Airport Symbol in the status bar (top right of screen) shows an arrow pointing upwards (I assume this means internet sharing is "On"). I'm running 10.5.1 And on another note, my wife's iPhone has the same problems.
If I get a wireless modem router, will this problem go away?

I've never messed with interne sharing. However, reading your post would seem to give a clue: Internet Sharing: On (Sharing your Built-in Ethernet connection). It sounds as if it's only sharing the ethernet (cabled)connection, not the Airport (WiFi) connection. I'm not at a Mac right now so I don't know if there's a way to change that setting. Also, if I recall correctly, people have reported problems sharing an Internet connection with a Mac. I don't remember the details as it wasn't an issue for me.
I have my DSL plugged into an Airport Extreme Base station. Service is distributed both by Ethernet cable and by wireless from there. The Touch connects beautifully.

  • How to use VNC with AirPort?

    Hi,
I used to have an old iMac G3 DV at home, and I always used VNC to access it from my work computer. No problem.
Now, I recently bought a brand new MacBook and a brand new AirPort Extreme base station, and I can't connect using VNC anymore. I tried every single configuration I could, using the AirPort Utility, but it was no use.
I am not really an expert though, as this is my first time using wireless. So, please, anybody there, with greater experience about configuring AirPort for it to allow VNC connection, if you could please help me solve this problem, I would really appreciate it!
I've been told that I should make the gateway IP redirect all VNC requests to my MacBook, but I have no idea of how to do that.
I'm using Vine Server 2.1 at home (former OSXvnc) and VNC Dimension 0.7.1 at work, as the client. My MacBook is the only computer connected wirelessly to that AirPort station back home. At work, I use an older iMac G3 Indigo, with 384 MB RAM and Mac OS X (10.1.5).
Any ideas? I'm sure it should be easy to do...
    MacBook 13" 1.83 GHz 512 MB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.9) AirPort Extreme 802.11n

    Hello Duane!
Thanks for the quick response, and thanks for the PDF document you provided.
I remember I tried out a lot of different configurations using port mapping under NAT, and none of them worked. But I believe the problem was precisely that my local IP address for my MacBook was not static, it was always changing between that range 10.0.1.201-10.0.1.255.
So I will try setting up a static IP address and see if it works. Now, how do I do that? I can just go to somewhere in AirPort Utility and type in an address outside the default range (let's say, 10.0.1.300) and it will remain static? Where is the place I can change that?
Sorry if I sound too much of a newbie, hehe! And thanks again for your help.

  • Is there any way to get around the limitations caused by having to use FAT32 with Airport Extreme (32-Gb usable on 1-Tb drive)?

Why offer AirPort Extreme as a PC solution and limit it to FAT32? It's virtually good only for thumb drives? It's a waste of time and money with the 32-Gb limit of FAT32. 32-gb thumb drives are inexpensive and portable. They can easily be moved from PC to PC. In my opinion, there is no discernable value to the Windows user. We can already share printers and USB drives in our home networks.
I was hoping to get faster, more reliable access from my iPad to a USB drive that stores my music. Works fine with a thumb drive, but the 32-Gb limit is a deal breaker. Here's hoping someone can offer a solution.I do have a usable copy of Partion Magic.

Sorry that this may not seem like an ideal solution, but one option is to use an application that runs on a Windows PC that allows you to format HDDs for HFS+. Once formatted as such, it can be shared out to either OS X, Windows, or Linux users from an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule. HFS+, like NTFS, supports much larger HDDs.

  • Choppy sound when using airplay with airport express

    Hi everyone,
This is my first posting and I hope I can get some advice with the following situation:
Setting: a CISCO router with WIFI for my apartment, a mac mini, an iphone and an ipad all connected to the network. I also have an airport express that is attached to a set of speakers (the airport express is connected to the network as a client).
When I try to use airplay from ANY device and play music to my speakers connected to the airport express, I get choppy sound (volume goes up and down) and bad sound quality.
Any advice and how to go around the issue?
I've updated firmware but the issue doesn't seem to be that.
    Best Regards,
    Will

    Hello WillMendoza,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iOS: Troubleshooting AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4215?viewlocale=nl_nl&locale=nl_nl
Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
Turn off Bluetooth on your iOS device by tapping Settings > Bluetooth.
Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
If possible, try to locate your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your iOS device and Apple TV.
If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
If the Wi-Fi router has an external antenna, check to see that is it connected properly and in good condition.
Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Loss of privileges to external disk after using it with Airport Extreme

My wife and I both have MacBook Pros, dual 2 cores running OS 10.5.8. I bought an Airport Extreme to see if we could share songs & pictures wirelessly from the same libraries. I connected an external hard disk to the AEBS and got it set up as a "server". The songs in iTunes worked well, but the photos were a problem because we don't use the same version of iPhoto, also it was slow to process photos wirelessly and the AEBS seemed to randomly kick one or both MBPs off the network, necessitating a restart of all devices. Anyway, I've decided to do away with the AEBS.
Problem is, now when I connect the external hard disk to either computer, I don't have access privileges. How can I fix this without wiping the drive?
    Thanks

Well, I guess I should've explored the Get Info window before posting. I was able to rectify access privileges.
Anyone got a handle on the whole AEBS knocking users off network?

  • Any possibility to use Isight with Airport Extreme??

I wonder if there is a way to use the Isight over the Airport Extreme Basestation remotely from another connected computer, like you would for monitoring.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Sure is, currently doing it.
Have an iSight hooked up to a Pismo (using iGlasses) the is positioned over my newborn. Using iChat over Bonjour through an AirPort, I am able to monitor his lack of sleeping from either the iMac G4 (again with an iSight) or on the MacBook Pro.
I initiate the video conference request from the MacBook or iMac G4, and the Pismo auto-connects.
The Pismo required the "AutoAcceptVCInvitations 1" line added to com.apple.ichat to automatically accept all Video Chats. Then for security, I restricted all users NOT on my buddy list to not see my status.
    Works pretty well.

  • Use aircard with Airport?

I have a Verizon (usb) air card for access with my laptop. Is there a way to use the air card at home with my Airport Extreme so that my wife and I may share the connection?

    Hi,
You could try a special adapter (similar to this one) in order to transform the output to Ethernet (to be connected to the WAN port of the AirPort Extreme base station). Make sure that the adapter has support for the USB mobile broadband modem in question.

  • Can't use aircard with airport on

I use an aircard (wireless modem) hooked to a Usb port to access the internet and I have an airport express hooked to my stereo and a printer to stream music or print from my laptop. They both work fine alone, but if I have my airport on to print or stream music, my aircard doesn't work. If I turn my airport off it works just fine. How can I use my aircard and still listen to music or print while I'm online? I'm new to Macs, so hopefully it will be something simple.

You probably have your networks set up in reverse order. Go to Sys Pref, select Network. You will want your aircard listed first and airport somewhere after that. If they are not, click on the little daisy wheel down at the bottom of the list of networks. A menu will pop open, select "Set Service Order". Drag your aircard to the top of the list. Safari will start at the top of the list when looking for an internet connection. right now it is trying to connect through the aircard since it sees it as an active network and never goes past it to the others.

  • Using itunes with airport

I have the portable airport plugged into my stereo that I run my itunes through to play music. I just downloaded some videos through itunes and they will only play on my computer, is there any way to have the audio of them play through my airport and my stereo?

If you're viewing the videos, then I'd say no as it appears Quicktime takes over and QT won't send audio through AirTunes.
You could try changing your preferences to Play Videos in Main Window.
It means you can't really watch them without squinting, but you should be able to listen to them.
It's only a suggestion - I don't have wireless at home - but it just might work.

  • What Vonage router to get with Airport Express?

After a recent lightning strike , I'm in the market for a new Vonage-compatible router that I could use along with Airport Express. I used to have a Linksys RT31P2 for Vonage and I plugged an Airport Extreme base station into it for wireless, but both boxes got fried. Given that I want to use an Airport Express box which will provide wireless, I figured I could get a Vonage-compatible router that isn't wireless (like the RT31P2) and save some money, but I'm having a hard time finding one (it seems the RT31P2 is now obsolete). Best Buy and Comp USA carry two Vonage devices, the Linksys PAP2 and the Linksys WRTP54G. The PAP2 doesn't have an ethernet port in which I could plug the Airport Express so that's no good. And the WRTP54G is a wireless device (which I don't need) that costs $110 (I thought I'd be able to find something around $50).
Any suggestions? Should I just buy the old RT31P2 on amazon or Ebay?
If it matters I have a Scientific-Atlanta PSC2100 series cable modem, and my computers are Mac laptops (Powerbook G4 and iBook G4) with Airport Extreme cards.

Best Buy also has rebates available on both of those devices. If you qualify the devices will be much cheaper.
Since the AirPort Express has a single Ethernet port, your options are limited.

  • Epson RX560 with Airport Extreme N

has anyone tried this printer model (Epson RX560) with the new airport extreme via the USB port?
looks to be a nice printer but want to be able to use it with airport.
    thanks in advance

If you want to connect them via Ethernet, the directions start on Page 48 in Apple's "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility" (direct PDF link).
If you want to connect them wirelessly, the directions start on Page 42 in Apple's "Designing AirPort Networks Using AirPort Utility". This will force the 802.11n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to operate in the slower 802.11g.

  • HP DeskJet F380 won't work with Airport Express

    Hello,
I just purchased a HP DeskJet F380 AIO printer to use with my PBook G4 12". It works fine when connected directly to the PBook through USB, but when I try to use it with Airport Express it won't work. The printer setup utility recognizes the printer as a Bonjour printer but then the specific model won't show up in the pull-down menu. I've tried picking other HP printer models, but when I try to print the printer won't do anything at all. I asked HP support and they basically threw up their hands and gave no assistance.
How can I make this printer work with Airport?
    Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the Discussions
    Try the process outlined here:
HP Printers (and others) not on compatibility list and Airport Extreme Printing
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html
If the supplied HP driver won't work (and as there are no third party alternatives available) then no it won't work with Airport.

  • How do i use my time capsule and extend the network with airport express

I have a new iMac and Time Capsule, how do i extend the network with airport express. My time capsule does have a guest net work, and logins and passwords? I am no computer person. So for me it would have to be spelled out.

This has been automated in the v6 utility. I am used to doing it manually in v5 utility which is also fairly easy.
Apple doco is also good to read.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
    Note.
You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.
