Using Migration Assistant on external drive for moving new apps to Leopard

I'm sorry if this has been covered, but I searched and couldn't find the answer on any previous posts.
I am having the infamous "yellow triangle" problem when trying to install Leopard on my iMac. I created a bootable copy of Tiger and all my apps, etc. on an external drive (including Parallels/Windows) with SuperDuper, and I'm planning on trying an "archive and install", and then hopefully using MA to transfer all of my settings and files from the bootable copy of Tiger on the FireWire drive.
Obviously before I go ahead I want to make sure I can do this. Is this possible, and what would the basic steps be?

I didn't know I needed to disconnect the FW drive in the first place. That may be the root of all my problems.
I have been having nothing but problems with this Leopard install on my iMac (though it seems to be working on my Macbook Pro). Here's what happened:
* The iMac install was going just fine (though I had the external hard drive connected). I selected the internal hard drive (no yellow exclamation or anything like that) and it began to install. After about 2 minutes it kicked me out and said there was an error.
* ok. So I rebooted and tried it again. From this time on, whenever I tried to install Leopard on the hard drive there was a yellow exclamation, and I got the infamous "Can't install OS X on this volume without changing installation settings" (basically erase and install)
* Then I tried Leopard Disk Utility. When I tried to verify the disk, it gave me an error saying the disk has the incorrect number of extended attributes (should be 0 instead of 238) and it needs to be repaired. But it wouldn't let me repair it, even if I rebooted off the DVD.
* Next, I went back to Tiger's Disk Utility and verified the disk and repaired permissions. There seemed to be an error that was corrected, so I thought that would do the trick. Wrong! By the way, I checked the partitions and the disk is formatted with a GUID partition.
* Even after the repair and verification with Tiger, I still get the same problems. When I go to install Leopard, it doesn't work and I get the same errors if I run Leopard Disk Utility.
This is why I was going to do an erase and install, and import via MA. Do you know any way around this?

    Other info is available:
    Superdrive MFG date: Sept 2009
    Model: DVR-118LBK DVD-R/RW Writer Unit
My Macbook is: Mid-2010, running Mavericks
    Thanks in advance, God bless!

That's a nice Pioneer DVD±RW drive - and an upgraded replacement for the original optical drive that shipped with that G5.  For a finished look, you'd want to install it in an external enclosure for 5.25" IDE/ATAPI drives that converts it to USB connectivity.  Because SATA optical drives have replaced ATAPI drives in recent years, the selection is getting more limited for a new enclosure, although used ones can undoubtedly be found at ebay.  Here's an example of one, although it only features USB connectivity.  You can also find enclosures that have both FireWire and USB connectivity, which for Mac users is beneficial.  Booting the computer (if needed) by a FireWire-connected device is generally more reliable than USB booting.  If this isn't important to you, then a USB-only enclosure would be adequate.  The enclosure will have directions, but essentially all you need to do is plug in the power cable and data ribbon cable and then secure the drive to the bottom plate of the enclosure with the included machine screws.

  • Can the mac osxlion usb jump drive be used after as a external drive for storing media files

can the mac osxlion usb jump drive be used after as a external drive for storing media files

If you are talking about the Lion install USB thumb drive sold by Apple then no it can't. it has some specail formatting that makes it show up as a DVD drive and is securely locked from any changes.
But I must ask why would you want to. That would destroy that drive and wipe out the Lion installer.
USB thumb drive can be bought for $8.

  • Using both internal and external drives for iTunes

    Hi
I know this is a basic question . I did a few searches and my head started spinning .
I've been using an external drive for my music but it only has 3GB left .
My internal drive has 12GB so I would like to start to use it for storage of music along with the external . (I'll be getting a new mac soon)
In Importing I have >Create file names with track number
    Advanced>Keep iTunes Music folder organized
This is on my Panther eMac with iTunes 4.7.1
thanks in advance for any help

The only thing you have to do is to click the 'Reset' button in Preferences>Advanced>General.
Your 'iTunes Music folder location' will be reset to the default location on the internal disk.
All new imported music will be stored there.
New added music will be stored there if you have the checked 'copy files to iTunes Music folder location when adding to library' in Preferences>Advanced>General.
When your new Mac arrives and you want to transfer the library, first copy the entire 'iTunes' folder (in ./Users/YourUsername/Music) from your eMac to the exact same location on the new Mac.
To transfer the iTunes folder, you can burn it on CD or DVD, but a lot easier is to put the eMac in Firewire target mode.
This article tells you how to do that:
How to use FireWire target disk mode
After the transfer of the iTunes folder is completed, connect your external drive and run iTunes.
The new Mac will have a newer iTunes version and it will take some time to convert the old library format to the new format.
Once all works OK and If you want all your music on your new Mac, use the 'Consolidate Library...' command from the Advanced menu in the menubar.
All music from the external disk will be copied to the internal disk.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I use migration assistance with hard drive reader for dead macbook

    Hi,
My old mac laptop died without warning.
I took it to the apple store and they suggested getting a hard drive reader and using that to transfer
    across my files.
I've connected it up and have requested the migration assistant to transfer the files. Last night it
said it would 27 hours to transfer and now this morning it is saying 72 hours. This seems to
be a very long time - is it correct? Can I make it go faster or is there another way?
I've got a bit of music on there but nothing excessive. I do have about 15,000 photos though.
I'm not very techy so any assistance would be very helpful
    Thanks
    Sarah

Hi, that's far to long, unless maybe it's USB1.1 speed.
If USB2 or Firewire, I'd start ober & try Disk utility>Repair Disk on the external drive.

  • Use a partition on external drive for windows support software

    Hello
I am trying to install Windows 7 on my MacBook AIR  13" 8GB.  I have an external drive that i created a partition for the Windows Support software but when I choose to proceed in Boot Camp Assistant to download the windows support software it says the entire drive has to be one partition formatted to MS DOS.
Any way around this..I have the Windows disc and would like to avoid having to buy another 8 GB or greater size external disc drive
    Thanks

I do not want to install Windows on the external drive.
An external drive is needed to download the windows support software as stated in Boot Camp.  It seems I cannot use a partition on the external drive to download the support software.. Wondering if there is a work around this..

  • HT4889 Having issues using Migration Assistant taking 200+ hours for 60 gigs.

I am transferring from my source which is running Lion to my target which is running Mountain Lion.  It is taking 200+ hours with the ethernet connection.  Is firewire faster? Help!

    Thanks for the reply,
I didn't understand exactly what to put into AppleScript sorry (never used it before) - so I just ran the following from the Terminal:
    $ echo $UID
    $ sudo chown -R 503 ~
And restarted - everything works now - thanks heaps.
What had happened and is this something I did or did Migration Assistant just get confused?
I have 3 new Mc Pros to setup on Monday so just want to ensure those are hassle free.
    Cheers

  • I used Migration Assistant to copy data to an new MacBook Pro from an old via my Time Capsule. When asked if to inherit time machine history on the new Mac, I mistakenly said no. How do I go back one step to say yes?

There isn't enough space on the Time Capsule to create a separate backup of the data on the new MacBook. And I am reluctant to delete old backups of the old MacBook to create space to backup the new machine. This occurred about 3 weeks ago so the data on the two machines are now out of sync. If I start over by formatting the new MacBook and rerunning Migration Assistant to pull data from the Time Capsule, how do i preserve the last 3 weeks of data on the new MacBook, considering that I didn't keep track of which files changed in the last 3 weeks?

All the rest of the stuff is where it should be.  As best I can tell. I have been going through my programs one at a time to see what works.  With the change in the OS (Launchpad? What the heck?) I am finding a significant number of my old programs are not working. Some I have found upgrades.  But without a working mail program, the machine is pretty useless for work.
The Apple techies had me run through 3 hours of 'stuff' (holding down keys and restarting, etc, etc).  It still does not launch. I think we are waiting for a 'miracle', but I need to know now if they should just come get this piece of junk or if they really are able to find a solution in a timely manner.

  • External Drive for iTunes new MacBook Air

I recently upgraded from a MBP (2009) to a new MBA.  I have always had my iTunes directory on an external drive. (For the last 3 MacBooks I have had...) so I know how to properly map iTunes to the drive, etc...
When I finished setting up the new MBA - I attempted to access the External Drive hooked up to my new TimeCapsule.  However iTunes would not recognize the database.  (I set the new location as directed)
I then disconnected the External Drive, and connected directly to the MBA - and attempted the same - with no luck.
The only way I seem to be able to access anything on my iTunes is via iTunes Match.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thank you in advance..

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Music/ as the folder's path, and drag the entire iTunes library, including the database files, to it.
Alternatively, you can drag the entire library to any location on the internal drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and choose it.
If you only put the songs and not the database files on the external drive, drag it to the internal drive and from there to the library in the open iTunes application window.

  • Using Time Capsule as External Drive for iTunes Music Folder in iTunes 9

First, prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard and iTunes 9, I had my 210 GB of music on a 1TB Time Capsule which I accessed wirelessly through my Macbook Black and I set my path to the "iTunes Music (External) Folder" I created on the Time Capsule as the default path for iTunes to access the iTunes Music (External) Folder. My iTunes Library and Album Art reside on the Macbook hard drive. Unless I opened iTunes when the Macbook was disconnected from the Time Capsule (e.g., not at home), it always remembered the drive path the next time it was opened and would play music fine. If I had to reset the drive path, iTunes would remember it (again, unless I was disconnected from my Time Capsule). Now, under iTunes 9.0.1 and Snow Leopard, iTunes always defaults back to the iTunes Media Folder on the Macbook each time I open iTunes even if I set the path to the Time Capsule. The TC is also used as my airport connection to the cable modem and Home Sharing is enabled. Oddly, iTunes seems to play music just fine even though the drive path to the iTunes Music (External) Folder is not being utilized, which it would not do under the old version of iTunes. A screenshot is below. Anyone know what is going on here?

Make sure the Time Capsule is ready and mounted before launching iTunes.
You can add it (the Time Capsule) to your Login items in System prefs -> Accounts.

  • Using ATC as an external drive for storage

How can I use my ATC to copy files and photos to to liberate space on my hard drive in my MacBook Pro?

    Whoa.
If you move files and photos to the Time Capsule hard drive...and then delete them from your MacBook Pro......the only copy of the files that you will have will be on the Time Capsule.
When....not if...the Time Capsule has a problem, you will lose all of the files and photos.....since you do not have a backup for them.
Surely, you would not want to risk having only copy of your files with no backup, correct?
Add another USB or FireWire drive to the MacBook Pro and move the files there.  Then, Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the hard drive.
So, you have "original" files on one drive and "backups" on another. That would be a minimum backup plan. Many of keep extra additonal backups. For example, if my house burns down or is flooded, I have copies of all data on another drive that is offsite.

  • I am trying to transfer files from my MacBook Pro to my iMac using migration Assstance and they cannot find one another.  My MacBook Pro uses Migration Assistance 1.0.6 and my new iMac uses 10.5.3.  What can I do to allow sharing?

How does one transfer Files from an old MacBook Pro to a new iMac?

10.5.3 is at least part of the problem.  You need to apply the latest updates to that mac.
See How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC?  Select the appropriate link and follow the instructions carefully.

  • Use migration assistant to transfer from old HD (10.4) to new HD (10.6) to new

    Hello,
I am helping a friend replace a failing HD on her Macbook (mid 2007, Intel, runnung 10.4 tiger). the hard drive has not failed yet, but we cannot repair permissions and cannot repair the disk using disk utility or disk Warrior. At the genius bar the utility they used showed a couple of bad blocks and lots of error and so we do believe the drive will fail sooner or later.
I have purchased a new hard drive to put in the Macbook and would like to install 10.6 Snow Leopard on the new drive.
My question is this, can I put the old hard drive that has not yet failed into an external enclosure (USB 2, not Firewire)
and then use migration assistant as I am installing the new system to move all her stuff over (her account, files, apps, settings)?
I have several other computers at my disposal and originally I had planned on copying her home folder to another
external drive hooked up to my powerbook, then launch the Macbook with ne drive in target mode and just drag the
home folder to its place after the installation. But she has some games and apps that she might lose if i do this.

Ok on first reboot & putting dome info in Accept the Mogration Assistant invite, then here's the 3 screens & choices, (though this is from Lion/10.7, yours should be close...
