  • How can I use migration assistant to load my new Macbook Air?

How do I use migration assistant to load my new Macbook Air?  Can this be done only wirelessly?

No, you can transfer from a Mac wirelessly, wired ethernet, Thunderbolt or Firewire. Your older Mac must have the same connection, but you can use adaptors if necessary. For example, you can use an Ethernet cable with an Ethernet-Thunderbolt adaptor if your older Mac has an ethernet port.
Wireless tends to be pretty slow (can take many hours) so it's recommended to choose a wired connection whenever you can.

  • New MBP.  Used migration assistant in setup  Safari crashes on launch  OS10.7.4  Safari 5.1.7  Had Safari 6 on system I migrated from.  help?

New MacBook Pro.  Came with OS 10.7.4
Used Migration Assistant in initial set up
    Safari crashes immediately on launch
System I migrated from, had Safari 6
Don't see any way to reload or to update Safari 6 on the new MBP
Software Update says all software on this computer is up to date

Updating to Safari 6 for Lion may help.
Click here >  Safari Quits Every Time Opened: Apple Support Communities
Then click the link posted by:  gregoryfromcork
That will automatically download this file >  Safari6Lion.pkg.download
    Now quit Safari.
Go to your Downloads folder and double click that file and follow the instructions for installing.
Then restart your Mac, try Safari.

  • I have a windows vista pc and want to use migration assistant to copy files over. From what I understand, it will copy over my user profile and settings as well. Is there anyway to just copy files?

Hey everyone, I just bought a new macbook pro 13-inch (late 2011 model) and I want to use migration assistant to copy over my photos, iTunes library, documents, etc. I know this can be done wirelessly or by connecting the two computers by Ethernet cable (windows vista pc --> macbook pro). Which is faster?
I also have heard that using migration assistant copies over the user file as well and makes it the new one on the mac. I would only like to copy over files, not user settings. How do I do this?
    Thanks!
P.S. I'm assuming that when my iTunes library is copied, the mp3 files are copied too. Could someone please confirm this?

  • Migration Assistant not finding my new iMac

I had a VERY slow MA process going from old iMac to new iMac.  So I did a little research and apparently it was so slow because by default I was getting a wireless process. So I turned off the Airport on the old iMac and conncected the machines with an ethernet cable. Now the new machine is not getting recognized by the old one.  TIA for your help.

I feel the easiest, and most reliable, way of migrating data from an old Mac to a new one is using the Time Machine backup from an external drive.
The best source for help with this process comes from "The Great Pondini".  Here's a link to his site that is, by far, the premier source for help with this transfer:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html
Since you've already booted your Mac up and tried Migration Assistant, Setup Assistant won't be available to you (it's only available upon initial bootup of a new Mac).
I would pay particular attention to user accounts when you look at pondini's site, as Migration Assistant can create some headaches for the unwary.
    Enjoy your new iMac!

  • HT4796 How to solve my situation of having several Mac users created for me as I used Migration Assistant multiple times to move files from my PC

I recently tried to migrate data from my old and perpetually unstable PC to my new iMac through the Set up Assistant.  However, half way through the 6 hour process, my PC crashed (the exact reason why I finally bought a Mac!) and the connection was lost. I continued with the Mac set up and then tried again later to migrate the files with Migration Assistant.  Since I was nervous that my PC would crash again, I decided to do the data transfer in multiple migrations (ie. first I did photos and then after seeing that that was done successfully I did music and so on).  Unexpected to me, even though all of the 4 migrations were successful I now have 4 additional users (in addition to the one I set up durnig the initial process) because each migration created a new user.  Each user has  little bits of my data.
What is the easiest way to merge these users or at least the data that resides in each one?  I really only want one user.  thank you.

You may not have created a mess, it's possible you simply don't know where your data is after migrating. Had you followed the Setup Assistant's on-screen prompts when you initially turned on your new system you would be running just fine by now. My guess is you haven't been exposed to Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips.
Migration Assistant (MA) and Setup Assistant (SA) are cousins, similar but different. The primary difference is MA creates a new user account which can be confusing to some users. If you successfuly migrated then log out of your existing using account and you should see the new user account. Log into that account then you should see the migrated data. If you do then use Pondini's Transferring files from one User Account to another.
However if you have totally made of mess out of things then I'd start over, this time using the Setup Assistant Tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance.

  • How do I migrate Lightroom 4 onto my new iMac from old laptop?

I have just purchased a new iMac, and would like to use my version of Lightroom 4 which I have been using on my old laptop.  Can I just download it from adobe.com on the new machine and then use my previous serial number to activate it?  Is there an easy place to find my serial number if I don't have the original Lightroom packaging anymore?  Do I have to deactivate it on my old laptop, before or after setting it up on the new machine?
After all that, is it easy to bring in my photo library from the external hard drive?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

    you need that serial number.

  • When I use migration assistant to move all my data from my Macbook Air to my Pro, it uses the last full back up not the last partial back up. The last full backup is two months old though. Both machines are running Mountain Lion. How do I get my latest 1

    Hi
I need to move my data from a time capsule that backuped my Macbook Air (which has been destroyed by liquid damage) to my Macbook Pro. The Air and the Pro both run Mountain Lion and I have a clean installation on the Macbook Pro.
I used Migration Assitant to move the data across but while I have back ups of my Air up to 24 hours before it was destroyed, the migration assistant only wishes to migrate data from the last full back up that it finds which is 2 months old.
Please can you advise how I can restore the latest data to my Macbook Pro.
    Many thanks.

please let me know the linksys device model number you are using ..

  • Migration assistant -- causing problems on new iMac?

I got a new 20" iMac yesterday. Specs are 2.16Ghz, 1 gig RAM, 128 meg video memory. I transferred all my settings and data from my mini using the mini in target disk mode with the firewire connection. I've had to reinstall a couple of drivers but other than that everything seems to have transferred fine. However, the iMac seems sluggish at many tasks and is doing some quirky things. A good example is that right now, I just mapped a drive on my Windows PC and it mapped fine but the "Connecting to Server" status window is still up and won't go away. It also seems to be slow opening some apps, etc. Could transferring everything from my mini have caused this? Would it be better to just reinstall OSX clean and install everything from scratch? Could the problems be because I migrated from a PPC Mac to an Intel?
I have 2 gigs of RAM on order so I know that will help but this seems like a bigger problem than just a lack of memory...
    Thanks
    Todd

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you fixed the problem. Now, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone, using Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc. That will mitigate future problems when updating stuff.

  • Using Migration Assistant to move to a new MacBook Pro generated 80 GB of additional data that cannot be traced on the HD

I used Migration Assistant to setup my new MacBook Pro (Retina) and to transfer my user account from my 1-year old MacBook Pro. Both computers have the same harddisk (500 GB SSD), but the new one now only has 85 GB of free HD space, whereas the old one still has 168 GB free space.
The space seems to be from files that show up as "Others" on the HD, but the large folders (music, movies, photos, documents, system, library etc.) are the same size on both computers.
Does anyone have any idea where the extra data could come from? I assume that languages would be stored in the System or Library folders, so even if I had deleted all unused languages from my old computer (which I may have done a year ago, I am not sure), this should not result in a more than 80 GB difference in free space, should it?
I would be glad if anyone had an idea where all the data may come from or how to get rid of it. Thanks a lot.

I'd get an external, bootable FireWire enclosure, put the new HD into it, ensure it runs the MBP, and then swap.
One thing to consider going forward: the new MacBooks (annoyingly!) do not have a Firewire port, so it might be a good idea to consider dual Firewire & USB 2 external drives/enclosures for future purchases. It won't matter for this swap but it will help avoid buying something that can't be used with any new Macs that don't have Firewire.
An low cost alternative for those that just need a temporary way to mount an external drive for uses involving only Intel Macs are the newish bare-bones USB drive adaptors, such as the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter. The advantage to these gizmos, besides low cost, is that they work with both ATA & SATA drives. Some, like the NewerTech model, also support other devices, like some optical drives.

They're in a new user account created by the Migration.  When you next log on, you should get a prompt to assign a password for the new account.

  • HT4889 Migration Assistant to update my new Mountain Lion iMac from an external USB hard disk drive, it is constantly saying that it is "looking for other computers". It doesn't find the external drive. Why is it looking for other computers?

I'm trying to use Migration Assistant to update my new Mountain Lion iMac from an external USB hard disk drive. I told it to look for a drive, yet it is constantly saying that it is "looking for other computers". It doesn't find the external drive ... it just endlessly looks for other computers. Why is it looking for other computers at all, when I told it not to?

Wow, the wording in Migration Assistant is misleading. I've never used it before, so I thought I would try to copy my files from the external drive ... my old iMac died, but I managed to get everything I need off it, using the 'cp' command in single-user mode. So I guess I'll just have to manually copy the files from the external drive to the new machine. I was hoping that Migration Assistant might help somehow, but obviously not.
    Thanks for the quick reply!

  • Can I use Migration Assistant as a tool to move my iphoto library back and forth from my imac to my MacBook Pro?

I purchased a macbook pro so I can work on my iphoto projects when out of the house. Instead of buying an external and having my iphoto library on that, would I be able to use Migration Assistant to update the iphoto library from macbook pro to imac and imac to macbook pro -- depending on which machine i am using at the time?

    Do this:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • I used migration assistant for old MacBook Pro to New MacBook Pro

Today, after being on the phone to applecare I uses migration assistant to copy files, applications etc from my old macbook pro to my new one using firewire, but only somethings copied for example, none of my photos, or music came over and also a lot of the software is asking for verification and codes etc. When the applecare person asked me to restart the old macbook pro holding down the "t" key, when it restarts all it shows is a firewire icon bouncing around on the screen like a screen saver, giving me no access to the old mac and therefore having to choose the transfer "from a time machine back up or other disk" option instead of the "from another mac" option, could that be the problem? Has anyone else experiamced this?

I did choose "other disk" cause it wouldn't let me choose the "from another mac" option. I'm thinking this is why not all of my stuff transfered? Also is it strange that the old mac just had the firwire icon bouncing around on the screen the whole time?
    Thanks
