Using migration assistant with macbook air

Since there are no Firewire on the MacBook Air, can I use a USB port to transfer my apps using Migration Assistant?

Hi Jean-Paul,
You can use wireless as well as a wired connection for Migration Assistant (you'd need the USB-to-Ethernet adapter if you went wired).

  • Using Migration Assistant with Time Machine or Super Duper data

Can I use Migration Assistant with a Time Machine or Super Duper backup on an external drive instead of the original computer? I'm thinking of upgrading my Mini to a new one but only have one monitor. Not in the mood to hunt down an old monitor & buy adapters, etc. If I can, are there any tradeoffs using a backup instead of the original Mini? And is TM or SD preferable for this purpose? The current Mini runs 10.6 SL.

    yes to both.

  • Using migration assistant with firewire disc

I am trying to transfer my settings and applications etc. from a firewire disc that was previously connected to my old but good G4. The iMac and the external volume have the same OS and there is no problem booting from either volume. When I first tried using Migration Assistant, I selected the transfer from another volume on this computer option and the process started and then the drive stopped transferring; I had to Force Quit Migration Assistant. I repaired permissions on both volumes and tried again. This time the process got as far as listing the accounts, which I selected only to get a message that there was a name duplication and to alter the account name for transfer; the result was to flip back to the same message. Since then I have been unable to get even that far. Any ideas?

Perhaps you could give me some assistance?
My HD was just replaced by Apple. I decided now was the time to upgrade to 10.4. This I did and used software update to bring everything up to date.
I had cloned by defective drive to an external FW and would like to use Migration Assistant to move as much as possible back to the new PB drive. I realize I could run into some trouble since I don't know what info was lost on the defective sector(s).
When I try MA, it recognizes the external drive but the user accounts will not show up in the next screen--the "rotating bars" (I don't know what it's actually called) just goes on and on. I left it running for over 6 hours with no result.
Should I just do a straight copy of the user folders? Can I do that with the applications folder?

  • Using Migration Assistant with Boot Camp?

Hi there. I am planning on switching from my 2007 MacBook Pro to a new MBP. I have Leopard installed as well as XP via Boot Camp. I used the migration assistant before when switching between an old imac and a new one. My question is, will using migration assistant via firewire cable transfer over the Windows XP partition?
If not, is there a semi-easy way to do this?
    Thanks!

You need to use something like WinClone

  • How do I use migration assistance with hard drive reader for dead macbook

    Hi,
My old mac laptop died without warning.
I took it to the apple store and they suggested getting a hard drive reader and using that to transfer
    across my files.
I've connected it up and have requested the migration assistant to transfer the files. Last night it
said it would 27 hours to transfer and now this morning it is saying 72 hours. This seems to
be a very long time - is it correct? Can I make it go faster or is there another way?
I've got a bit of music on there but nothing excessive. I do have about 15,000 photos though.
I'm not very techy so any assistance would be very helpful
    Thanks
    Sarah

Hi, that's far to long, unless maybe it's USB1.1 speed.
If USB2 or Firewire, I'd start ober & try Disk utility>Repair Disk on the external drive.

  • Using Apple Remote with MacBook Air

Does the new MacBook Air support the Apple Remote?

Alternatively if you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad you can look at remote apps such as Keymote, Rowmote Pro, etc.  (I'm a big fan of the latter).  These will allow you to do much more than just control Keynote.

  • Don't have permission to access my files after using Migration Assistant with my PC?

The transfer took over 6 hours, so I would appreciate any help other than suggestions to just try it again! At first I couldn't find where Migration Assistant put my files, but I found them in /users/(Windows user name which is actually different than Mac username). Lion made that step a little tricky, since it doesn't seem too eager to navigate me to the root of my hard drive. The folder icons have red symbols in the lower right hand corner of them, and when I try to access them, I receive the following message: The folder “Desktop” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
    Any help is really appreciated!

Try holding alt or option key when starting iPhoto to choose a new Library.

  • I am using migration assistant with my old MacBook and a new iMac but I'm just getting a swirling bar and spinning wheel. No signs of any progress after an hour. Drive is about 250 gbs.

The old MacBook says "the other mac is ready" and the new iMac says "successfully connected to other Mac. They are connected via Ethernet. Shouldn't there be some sort of indication of progress?   It just looks like they're stuck.
    Thanks!

  • Using Migration Assistant to restore after hard drive failure?

My MacBook's hard drive recently went kaput. The replacement arrived today and I attempted to do a TM restore when booting from the Snow Leopard disc. However, it inccorrectly states "This disk does not have enough space to restore your system." The new hard drive is exactly the same as the old one; both are 640 GB. I have researched this issue for hours and no one seems to know how to fix it, and frankly I am shocked that Apple has failed to recognize this serious problem.
So, my question is, can I use Migration Assistant with a fresh install of SL and get exactly the same results as I would if I had restored via Time Machine? Will I lose any data in the process that I would have had, had I done it via TM?
Another thing: I was messing around in the Migration Assistant window just to see how it worked. I selected everything that was available to be restored. However, it stated there was still around 150 GBs of free space on the drive. I had nowhere near that much free space on the old drive, and one would think that that would have left TM with enough space to go through with the restore. How is this sudden new, free space accounted for?

If you haven't already, use Disk Utility (which should be available early in the Snow Leopard installer boot process) to partition and format the new disk.  Select the drive (not the volume), select the Partition tab, click on the Options button, then select "GUID Partition Map Scheme" (or whatever the exact wording is).  Then format the volume as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".

  • Need to create temp account if you don't use Migration Assistant first?

I don't have access to my old iMac right now, so I've gone ahead and created a main account on my new one. When I'm ready to bring over stuff from my old computer, do I need to create a temporary account first on my new iMac? I've heard that unless I do that, Migration Assistant won't bring over the info into my main account but rather will create an entirely separate account with all the old info.

I have never used Migration Assistant with an Erase and Install, as I have never had 2 computers running at the same time. I always migrate things manually one at a time from my backup external hard drive using the "Import" and "Export" functions under "File". I don't know about the network settings--I just generally set them up anew with the Network Assistant. I don't know about a .Mac account since I don't have one, but I imagine you could do something similar. I like to just start off with only the the address book and Safari Bookmarks and be sure everything is working properly before importing other files, and then I just bring those in one at a time. If you have a good backup of everything, you should be able to import anything you want after an Erase and Install. But it is essential to have a good and complete backup of everything important to you.
    Good luck!

  • How can I use migration assistant to load my new Macbook Air?

How do I use migration assistant to load my new Macbook Air?  Can this be done only wirelessly?

No, you can transfer from a Mac wirelessly, wired ethernet, Thunderbolt or Firewire. Your older Mac must have the same connection, but you can use adaptors if necessary. For example, you can use an Ethernet cable with an Ethernet-Thunderbolt adaptor if your older Mac has an ethernet port.
Wireless tends to be pretty slow (can take many hours) so it's recommended to choose a wired connection whenever you can.

Suggest you try the password for the Macbook, not the previous one.
