Using Mini DVD's

Hello all,
I've got an opportunity to do some video editing for a charity that does work for haiti relief. I've been using Final Cut Express and it's fine for everything I do so far. However the man that's offering the work just handed me a stack of mini DVD's to get the footage from. My drive won't accept them, obviously and I'm wondering if any of you have gotten around this.
I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum. I wasn't quite sure where to post this one. It looks to be a great gig and I'd hate to lose it over something as silly as this. Any information toward a working solution would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch,
Dave

Thanks for your response, Dave. That adds some clarity to the situation. Of the three potential solutions presented, which do you believe is the best, and why? Any suggestions on the recommended hardware, i.e. external drive, machine, etc...
I've given myself a day to explore the options and then report back on what I find out.
Thanks, I appreciate the help,
Dave

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer.  How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?  Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device?  Which device works well with the Mac?  Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac?  Thanks!!

No DV port in camcorder.  Just a yellow AV port/hole.  I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's.  Can I use this with a Mac?  Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac?  Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way?  Thanks again!

  • Using Mini Dvds With iMac?

Hi, I have a dell (pos) right now and I'm getting a iMac today, but i was wondering if the iMac supports the mini dvds that you use in the digital recorder cameras?

You will need an external tray-fed DVD drive for that.
That said, given the choice, you don't want to use a mini-DVD camcorder anyway. They are designed for immediate playback in a set-top DVD player, not for editing or manipulation. The MPEG-2 compression that the video undergoes substantially degrades the quality of the video, and because it stores the video in GOPs, you can't do frame-accurate editing of the video.
You want something that shoots DV (often cheaper than the DVD models), or AVCHD (mostly found on flash and hard-disk HD models). Mind you, AVCHD editing can be slow -- it's highly compressed.

  • Can I use Mini DVD's with my superdrive on my Mac?

I was recently given some Mini DVD's that were used on an old Camcorder and I was wondering if I could use it with the Mac superdive

No, you can ONLY use a standard 120 MM size disk in the SuperDrive.

  • Can I use mini dvd's in my new imac?

Have several movies made with sony mini dvd camcorder, can I put the mini-dvd in the dvd slot of my imac, or will it get stuck? Thanks,
    Dan

I was thinking about this and one way to avoid this problem completely is to invest in an external Pioneer Burner housed in an ext. FW enclosure.
Essentially one needs to make certain the drive has the capacity to play such a disk prior to its insertion into the machine.

I realize it's much harder to do this visual exam on a laptop or a slot loading S-Drive as opposed to a slide out tray as shown above.

  • Can mac book pros use mini dvd-r's?

I have a mac pro and was wondering if It is able to burn mini dvd-r's?any info would be helpfull. please email me at [email protected]

    Welcome to the Forums!
*NOT in the internal optical drive.* The mini discs will get stuck and possibly damage the drive. If you need to burn them, you need to get an external (tray-loading) optical drive. There are many that are Mac-compatible.
    Hope this helps...
FYI, don't expect too many of us to email you directly - you need to check back in your post(s) for answers from other users.
Also FYI, you may want to correct your profile - you have either a MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro. The Mac Pro is Apple's line of desktop computers, MacBook Pros are notebooks. Since you state 17", and you're posting in the MBP forum, I would assume you have a MacBook Pro.

Don't do it. You'll have a heck of time getting it out and it will not play any way.

Mini DVDs are OK in any computer that has a tray-loading drive, but usually aren't for machines with a slot-loading drive.

  • Best mini-dvd recorder for Mac?

    Hello,
I have a Sony mini-dv recorder that uses mini tapes. I would like to purchase a new digital recorder that uses mini DVD's so I don't have to transfer from tape and can just pop the mini dvd into the mac dvd reader. Is this possible? I have a friend who tried with a Sony with no luck. what is the best brand compatible with Macs?
    Thank you.

MiniDVDs and MiniDiscs have little or no support on the Mac platform. Best to steer clear of any device that uses them if your sole working platform is a Mac.
Keep in mind that any device that records to a DVD, such as a MiniDVD recorder, is compressing the content far more than if you just captured your footage on tape. The content is already being formatted for playback on a DVD player as you record it, thus it's like skipping the whole editing/formatting process altogether. In theory, all you have to do is plop the disc into a set-top DVD player and hit play.

  • Mini dvd mac mini

I just bought a new camcorder that uses mini dvd's. I need to know if I can put these sized dvd's in my mini. I've never had this kind of camera before, so i'm not really sure how to import movies onto my mac for editing and to burn on a full sized dvd. Need help pronto

you can do it using an adapter ring, but if somehow something went wrong, Apple won't fix it under warranty, since they expressly forbid doing so.
your other options are to use an external tray-loading DVD drive, or a USB/Firewire cable (if your camera offers this option).

  • Mini dvd-cd

Is there an adapter that one can buy to use the mini dvd-cd for Imac? I have a sony video camera and it uses mini dvds. I am thinking of buying an Imac and this this the only lack of feature of not being able to use /play mini dvd/cd that is weighing against the decision to buy.
    appreciate any input.
    thanks

You will need an external FireWire DVD drive to read those discs.

  • Question about mini dvd

    Hi!
I have a simple question, can i use mini dvd (1.4 gb) on my macbook pro ?
if i can't, there is a solution ? i would not buy any external drive ?
    thanks
    Bye
    Marco

With the computer off try holding the computer with the drive slot pointing down. Some people have succeeded in simply gently shaking them close enough to the entrance to get them out.
iFixit have instructions on how to remove , and then dismantle the optical drives used in MBPs in such situations, but doing so will void your Warranty or Applecare contract, of course.
    Cheers

  • Using 8cm dvd disks with iMovie

Several of the students in my school are using mini DVD camcorders of their own.
Am I right in thinking that it's NOT possible to export and edit footage from these dvds? Surely not!
At the moment I can't even figure out a way to insert the disks without going back to using one of our old tray loading G4s. Do I need an adaptor to insert them into slot loading G5? (Some camera manuals seem to warn against this!)
Is there any point any way? How would I rip the DVD contents into a format that's importable into iMovie HD?
Can't believe that a new camera format such as this seems to have this basic functionality all wrong!

you have some options to import content from a DVD
(as long, as your iMac's dvd drive supports dvd+)
    * DVDxD
    V (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple
    mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
    Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works
    25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast6/7 allows converting to
    dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a
DVD-player and disk to tape/use as converter
Yes, the Imac does play DVD+ discs. Do you have a preference for any of the programs suggested? Many thanks for your help with this.

  • Mini-DvDs+20 inch iMac=???

    Hey,
I'm attempting to transfer video files off of mini memorex dvd-rs, convert the files into .avis and then burn them back onto a DVD. It is proving incredibly frustrating to do on windows. I was wondering whether there was any way to do this on my iMac, considering it has superior video editing possibilities.

If you have an external tray loading DVD drive (firewire) they typically can accommodate mini-DVDs. Also, if you or someone you know has a DV camera that uses Mini DVDs you could hook it directly to the mac as well (firewire again...I do not know what models do and don't have firewire) and iMovie will import the data no problem. I know some DVD cameras only support USB, which iMovie will not recognize.
