Using modular captivate films

Dear All
I am using Captivate to train users in a new softtware system
we are currently implementing over here.
It is quite a big and complex project and since many of the
topics are interlinked, I would like to give our people the
opportunity to take a detour into other topics before returning to
the main subject - without opening new windows all the time.
This could of course be done by copying the various slides
into the respective scenario and use a branching.
The main problem with this is that I will have to edit
several of the existing slides and processes during the course of
the project.
With copy&paste, I am bound to loose track of where I had
inserted which group of slides - and the number of slides will go
up by the power of two, if I link each project with each other.
Is there a possibility to apply references to files instead
of the actual slides in the branching?
So far, I could not find such a function, but maybe, there is
a trick I am not yet aware of?

thank you very much for your responses.
I have not considered "go back"-functions for my work,
because that would mean that I would have to manage and publish 30
or more files for each lesson. The complexity required in this
project is already a challenge, thats why I try to keep it simple
and structured.
Larry, you are right - branching IS the key. It is just that
I need to branch from several lessen (i call them main process)
into separate films (sidetracks or subprocess). With lots of
editing required throughout the project and dozens of subprocesses
in lots of main lessons, branching by copy-and-paste would blow up
file size and require meticulous tracking of changes in the various
places, I inserted a subprocess.
So, the solution, I am now going for, is a slightly different
one.
A Flash-developer is now about to build an object for me,
which I insert into the respective frame. This object is
transparent and will only start when a button is clicked.
It then stops the main film and plays a separate subfilm,
which refers to a flashfile, I only have to build once.
Call it "advanced branching" if you want.. ;-)
Lets see, how this works out.
I am not a developer, so I just try to keep things going with
the lectures - my main tasks are in customizing our new software.
So far, the feedback from my initial flash-lectures yielded
excellent feedback in our project steering commitee and with a bit
of luck, this might make a nice success-story in ourt company.

Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution 1600X1200 or more and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the wide screen ( or two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

Using Adobe Captivate 6, how can I replicate the PPt text animations wherein I can float in timed?

Using Adobe Captivate version 6.0, I want to be able to do what I always could in PowerPoint - in a bulleted list, cause each bullet to float (or other animation) into place, establish a timing for each line.

To do this in Captivate, you need each bullet to be a separate text caption. You can then apply fly-in effects and time them to coincide with the voiceover. There's no way to make the bullets fly separately in if they are all in the same text caption.

BUG: Advanced Actions duplicated when creating NEW PROJECTS FROM TEMPLATE using Adobe Captivate 8.

Need: CREATE NEW PROJECTS FROM TEMPLATE using Adobe Captivate 8.
Problem: NEW PROJECT (.cptx) duplicates the Advanced Actions originally configured within TEMPLATE FILE (.cpt.).
For example: Template file (.cptl) advanced action "_initializeModule" gets duplicated as "_initializeModule1", "_initializeModule2", "_initializeModule3" within NEW PROJECT. FYI, the original "_initializeModule" advanced action still appears.
MAJOR BUG, what the heck is going on?!?!!! Planning to deploy this template file to use for multiple courses with multiple users, this WILL cause epic confusion across the board.

Similar problem, think they are working on it as well: when dragging a shared action from an external library to a slide or object event, and that action is using a parameter that was already created for another shared action, there will be a new parameter created which really screws up the shared action contrary to this problem. Tip: for the moment do not drag shared actions from an external library immediately to an event, but drag them first to the Library: Reuse Shared Actions in other Projects - Captivate 7 vs. 8 - Captivate blog

Setting up Rational Set Matrix Quizzes using Adobe Captivate 7

My Boss wants me to setup a quiz with 3 set levels of difficulty in Adobe Captivate 7, he wants 5 questions each in random order. The concept is if a question is answered correctly the student moves on to the next level. For example if Question a-1 is correct move to questions a2,b2,c2,d2,e2 in random order, if the answer is incorrect the student will go through level 1 until he/she has passed to move, if these are correct the student will move to the third level a3,b3,c3,d3,e3 in random order and they will have two try's per question but they must continue in the quiz until they have passed it. Then we will gather the data for the question attempts, time, average, and percentage.
Any Suggestion? I've been using Adobe Captivate 7 for 7 months,so I'm still learning.

I've never been asked to implement a quiz structured the way you describe, but if I WAS asked to do one, I would probably implement it using Quiz Question Pools and Randomised Question Slides.
Have one quiz pool for each different level. So A1,B1, C1, D1 quiz slides would all be added into Quiz Pool 1. Questions A2,B2, C2, D2 etc would be in Pool 2, etc.
Then you need to add however many Random Quiz Slides you need to allow for the maximum number of questions your learners will be exposed to in your course.
Captivate's Branch Aware feature allows your learner's score to be calculated based on ONLY the quiz question slides they actually visit.
So if you use Advanced Actions to control which specific Random Question Slides your learner gets to see (based on which questions they get right) their final score will only be based on those specific slides.
The tricky part of this may end up being the design of your branching. You need to set the On Success and On Last Attempt actions of each Randomised Quiz Question Slide to jump to another relevant Randomised Quiz Question Slide. As I understand your description, if the user gets a single level one question correct, then they should be jumped from then on ONLY to level 2 quiz questions, is that correct? If so, then you will need a user variable to track which quiz level they have currently achieved, and use this variable in conditional advanced actions attached to the On Success and On Last Attempt events of each question to determine where they go as a result.

Teething troubles with Using Adobe Captivate

Hello I have never used Adobe Captivate before, and would be grateful for some answers. I know people are very busy and may not want to deal with beginners but any comments suggestions partial tips will be gratefully appreciated
I am trying to do screen recording and run into difficulties. I want to record a short (<10min) video of an instructive tutorial that plays on the internet. This tutorial has slides, and it is advanced by hand (manually) to the next slide
I was able to record video correctly, using the "Full Motion" mode. But when I use the other 2 available modes: I.e,Automatic, and Manual, I am not able to record. What happens it, I merely get a still picture upon playback, that runs as a video for 3 seconds. It turns out somewhere in "settings" there is a default which says slide length =3sec. It looks like what I am getting recorded is a single slide, containing the very 1st scene. What have I done wrong?

All I can say is... wow! I'm not sure where you live, but it sounds sort of "stuck in time" if you are really made to feel like an outcast just because your body has different parts.
All that aside, I'll take a stab at answering your questions.

The only thing you have done wrong is to misunderstand how Captivate is used to record screen activity. How successful you will be will depend on the version of Captivate you have installed as well as what your operating system is. For example, if you have Windows 7 64 bit and you are trying to use Captivate 4 (or earlier) you will likely encounter problems. But if you were using Windows XP you would likely be fine.
You may also be misunderstanding exactly how Captivate records the screen.

I'm not sure I've ever seen ANY software that does a flawless job of recording screen video where you are playing a video clip. You have to understand that video is usually memory and processor intensive. Not only for recording it, but also for playing it back. If you can, you will likely achieve your best result by locating the actual source file for the video and using that with Captivate. However, this somewhat depends on your Captivate version.
Also what is panning
Panning is a feature that allows you to record a smaller area of your screen. As you move the cursor around, the recording area is shifted to include parts of the screen that maybe weren't in the recording before. Maybe you are recording a 200x200 sized area. You are in the upper left corner of the screen performing some activity such as opening the File menu. But you move the mouse over to the right side to scroll the page. The recording would look as if you were peering through a small window and the larger area that was formerly hidden would appear in the window.

Will you be delivering this content from an LMS? If so, then the LMS should handle the menu. Break your project into separate modules and use the Multi-SCORM Packager to create a bundled set.
If you are not using an LMS, but ARE serving content from a web server, then YES you could create a menu module that you use to launch the other modules.
If you are intending to serve this content from a LAN or CD ROM, then you could create a normal HTML web page with hyperlinks to launch individual modules.

After Effects files can be rendered as MP4, you can insert them as video in Captivate.

The solution I got is to use Reflector App to mirror the iPad on to the PC and then record the screen. And to show user taps (essential for creating a simulation) through the reflector, NRTouchPoints, a UIWindow subclass that simulates user touches on the screen, has to be included in the application. Has anyone tried this out? Is this suggestion feasible?

package) file which includes the finished .swf file (at 720x1280), 3 icon
files (one of which is used as the button on the Android screen to start
the app), the required .xml file (which holds the necessary info on how
Android uses the .apk file).
The finished .apk file is then uploaded to the Android device using the adb
(Android Debug Bridge) commands in a command prompt.

Using NIKON Slide/film scanner

I have found no suitable place to find answers to my questions about using a NIKON FIlm scanner to obtain digital photos.. Perhaps someone might make a useful suggestion??
I have had a NIKON SF-210 slide/film scanner now for a couple or three years. However, I only started using it heavily last Fall (2008) to scan my large archive of old family slides. Unfortunately, as time has passed, the software has become more and more unstable causing me to have to restart the whole process after scanning only a small number of slides. Sometimes, it will not scan even one slide before crashing. I read somewhere that this behavior may be due to the upgrades in Mac software. I've done, repeatedly, all of the usual things that I can think of like reloading the software, etc.
I can't get a response concerning this problem from anyone at NIKON and they don't have any Mac version upgrades to the scanner software on their web sites, and haven't for some time, perhaps a couple or three years. Does NIKON still support Mac products??
Can anyone tell me how to solve or to find the solution to this problem?

I am using the Nikon Coolscan V (LS-50ED) USB connection with:
intel MBP 15" (2.8Ghz)
OSX 10.6.2. (Snow Leopard)
I am just using the standard (on disc) Nikon Software upgraded to version 4.0.2 via internet. The app says it is a *Application (PowerPC)* under the info section, so I assume that it is running on Rosetta. (the Genious did my upgrade to 10.6 so I don't know if he installed Rosetta or not, but I assume so.)
Everything seems to be working fine (as this is my first experience with scanning slides and color correction). Was a synch to set up. I am not the Ace though. I have only been using the slide scanner and not the film scanner yet (though I am soon to try).
FYI there is a flickr group of nikon scanner users. I found some of them helpful too.

Question about using the Captivate KO

My colleague and I are trying to get our course published,
using the Captivate KO. (We have tried inserting the Captivate quiz
using ActiveX, but neither of us have any experience with ActiveX,
so this seemed to be the better option.)
We are trying to publish the Authorware file now to test it,
and are running into problems. We have to publish our courses so
they play over the web (for testing) and through Plateau LMS (for
students to receive credit for the classes). The file location for
our courses is a shared server.
When we publish the file, from the web, we can't see the
Captivate KO quiz at all, and from Plateau we get a Runtime error
when the quiz begins to play. Basically, it is a failure across the
board.
We are thinking the problem lies in the literal/relative path
question when we first upload the quiz into the KO. Does anyone
have any idea what the right method for this would be?
(Everything works when the file is on one of our hard drives,
and that person publishes the file. It plays just fine for that
person, from her hard drive. So, that's how we've narrowed it down
to a path problem, when we move it to the server.)

You need to enter a valid Adobe ID, which consists of an e-mail address and your password. You can use the same ID as for the forum. The file to be reviewed will be stored on acrobat.com, reviewers get a link where they can download the file and the (free) Reviewer. It works fine.
