Using monolingual

I would like to try out using monolingual since I have an 80gig macbook that only has 52.74 gigs free after putting on 7 gigs of music and about a gig of photos. I deleted stuff like iWork but it didn't make a big impact.
I looked at monolingual but I'm not sure about how to use it safely. I'm only planning to use my computer in English. If I want to use translation for example, should I keep the language that I'd want to translate? Also in the architecture tab, all the boxes but "Intel" are checked. If I delete the PowerPC files, won't that make Rosetta stop working? What about Intel 64-bit, PowerPC G3, G4+, G5, etc.
Should I leave everything in the input menu tab unchecked?
Are there any languages other than English I should keep?
If anyone's used monolingual with success please tell me what you did.

First, and Most importantly, do NOT delete the PowerPC architecture. You can delete the older PowerPC selections, just not the one that says only PowerPC. This box should NOT be selected. Also, do not remove the English and US English Languages. Other than that, you should be fine. The languages you delete will not affect translation. And you can check anything in the input menu that you want, assuming you will not need to change the layout of your keyboard. Hope this helps.
Jason.
P.S. I have used it and it should free up between 2 and 3 gigs of HD

  • Ok I just used monolingual for some reason I had a great idea that is to get rid of the intel architecture since intel 64 bit is current one now my Mac  mini is completely messed up what do  to fix it?

I used monolingual for some stupid reason, I decided to get rid of the intel architecture, since it indicated that currently architecture was intel 64, now my desktop is not behaving properly what can I do to fix this?

    Hi,
    Time to reinstall the OS....
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition.

  • Deleted English using Monolingual!!

I made a huge mistake while trying to free up some precious hard disk space by deleting unwanted languages using Monolingual. Since I invariably use US English as my default language for all applications, I deleted English seeing it as redundant and unnecessary and left only US English. Now, it turns out that US English is just a subset of the English pack and so I desperately need to get my English pack back! Is it possible? Please don't say no. Any meaningful help will be highly appreciated...please advice!
PS: I cannot try the reinstallation route because I do not have an installation disk (installed Mountain Lion directly over App Store).

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Re: Using monolingual with caution.

Michael, although myself not a native english speaker, some suggestions:
Monolingual is a program that can remove other languages that installed by default by OS X installer that you don't want or use. It also offer to trim down the Input Menu and Architecture.
    Here are the tips:
    1. Since you only run this once, you can run it directly from the virtual drive that mounts after you double-clicked the .dmg that was downloaded.
    2. Uncheck the languages you want to keep, e.g. uncheck English, British English and US English in order to keep them.
    3. Never play with the input menu for it is not worth the space you save compared to the risk of losing control of your keyboard.
    4. Never remove and play with the architecture options as well, since you might lose the ability to run Rosetta for non universal programs.
    Good Luck!

Is this Tip considered Complete? Please advise

  • Itunes doesn't open after monolingual use, any further ideas?

I installed Monolanguage and now iTunes doesn's open any more.
tried everything mentioned here and in other forums.
I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro.
    I uninstalled Monolanguage
    I uninstalled and reinstalled Flip4Mac
    I deleted te TLSC file
I repaired the rights of access
    I rmoved Flip4Mac and Quicktimeplayer
I restarted the system serveral times
    Nothing helps.
    Any more ideas?
How can I delete and reinstall iTunes without loosing all my data and backups etc.?

"Monolanguage" as you say several times, or "Monolingual" as in your topic?
Flip4Mac has nothing to do with iTunes.
You have to be careful using Monolingual It can remove components other applications expect to be there.  I don't know how it affects iTunes, though it could conceivably be looking for language support you no longer have.
If you're getting so desperate for hard drive space that you're using Monolingual then you may want to think about moving other files off, or buying a bigger hard drive.
You may want to consider re-installing your operating system  or restoring your computer from backup if you really think this was caused by using Monolingual.

  • System has slowed so much i can't use it!  what to do?

my iBook G4 (800mhz, 512[640]RAM) has been moving so slowly the last few days to the point that i can't use it anymore. simple tasks like opening the finder or iTunes sends the rainbow pinwheel spinning, even if the applications are opening by themselves. even when i'm not using the computer, it sounds like it's thinking. you know, responding to commands and carrying out orders and performing all kinds of operations. only i don't know what it's doing. this happened once before when i was using spotlight a lot and one day spotlight was updating the cashe or it's memory or something and i ended up fixing that pretty easily. i've checked this, and that's not the problem. i'm leaving town on a business trip soon, and i really need my computer to be in top form if it's at all possible. i feel competent on my mac, but i'm absolutely lost on this one. any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    have 2.72 gigs left
Bearing in mind that Virtual Memory can easily use 2 gigs of disk space, this might well be an issue. If VM is working at that level, then you have less than a gig of sapce, and if you've got a large temp. file, from - say - editing a file in Photoshop, it's very easy to see how the OS would have difficulty finding space...
Can you remove any files to storage? On an external disk? On CDs? Do you have lots of music that cold be stored on an external hd? Garageband loops? Remove unwanted language resources using Monolingual? Have you cleared out the unused language resources in iWeb? It might be worth trying, even temporarily, to clear off 5+ gigs of space, restarting and seeing does that make a difference.
If not then a re-install seems like the next port of call, however, with that limited amount of space, I think that you'll start having problems again, and soon.
What to take from the Machine in the event of a wipe and install? A non-exhaustive list:
    1. Your Home Folder, Documents, Pictures, Music, Library, including the Application Support Folder, Mail, Mail attachements, Calendars, Keychains and Preferences
    2. The Application Support Folder at HD/Library
    3. Have you installers for all your apps? Serial Numbers? Passwords from your keychains?
And anything else you can think of. Have a good look through the Library folder. Some apps create folders in there, appart from Application Support.

  • New Macbook, alot of space used on hard drive?

Today i received a new macbook with a 120gb hard drive. When looking at the space taken up by tiger etc i saw the usual 9gb difference i.e. capacity 111gb, then i noticed that i only had 92gb of available space. This is before i put any of my files on the computer i.e. music etc. Any ideas on what would be taking up all this space?

Yes, it is about right number for both available and used space.
you can use what size to see what is in your HD:
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/index.php
and use monolingual to get rid your other language:
    http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/faq.php
and use appdelete to delete application:

You need to delete some files.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.
    (0)
Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

  • PPC architecture - Monolingual woes

White trying to save space on my MacBook Pro, I deleted the PPC architecture using Monolingual in addition to several languages I would never use. Then the following happened -
    1. Office 2004 stopped working - uninstalled it and cannot re-install it - installation icon just bounces on dock and quits.
    2. Photoshop CS3 - Installs but icon just bounces and does not open
Is there any way to restore the PPC architecture without having to re-install OS X all over again ?
If I do start re-installing (last case scenario), can I directly upgrade from 10.4.5 to the existing 10.4.8 or do I have to download each and every update ?
MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1 GB SDRAM

Big mistake. By doing what you've done there's no alternative but to erase and install. There is no recovery (as the warning said when you used Monolingual.)
You can directly upgrade to 10.4.8 by simply downloading the 10.4.8 Combo (Intel) updater from Apple's download site. Or just run Software Update. It will provide all the required updates including 10.4.8 Combo updater.

  • Installing Monolingual for more HD space

I understand that many users are deleting(?) the basic app's that come with the MB,and then re-installing certain programs...such as monolingual.....are there any downsides to this? I think I heard somewhere that monolingual does increase HD space, but has a bug (defect)....???

To further elaborate on avoiding problems, see these FAQ's from the Monolingual homepage:
    Q. Monolingual made my OS X installation unusable.
    A. Chances are that you have accidently removed the English language files. Some language packs are only a subset of other language packs (for example "U.S. English" is a subset of "English"), so you will have an incomplete OS X installation if you remove "English" but not "U.S. English". In general, you should never remove the English language files unless you know what you are doing.
    Q. Should I remove the non-Intel architectures on my Intel based Mac?
    A. You can use Monolingual to remove non-Intel architectures for your installed applications (even if some of the applications are PowerPC-only; Monolingual is smart enough not to remove PPC forks if those are the only ones in the universal binary). However, you should not strip the System frameworks if you want to use Rosetta. Rosetta needs the PowerPC code for all frameworks used by the emulated application and if it can't find it, you may see messages such as the following in the console:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/Cocoa.framework/Versions/A/Cocoa:
    mach-o, but wrong architecture

  • Monolingual, dead apps, shuts down by itself and reformat concerns

Hi, I'm new on Mac, so any advice given to me should be clear and without abbreviation, so I can follow it properly. Thx.
1- I used monolingual without unchecking all the stuff in the two last tabs. The first tab was for the languages, the two last, for the architecture and some other internal components.
2- Since then, my whole Office won't work. I also discovered recently that Toast Titanium and Mac the Ripper would not open either (I did not try them before, thought).
3- Lately, my MacBook would just shut down just after I open it, sometimes 2 times in a row before I can use it. It just happened 5 minutes ago, while I was just surfing on Firefox.
4- When Office was the only symptom, a friend told me to reinstall Office. Now that i have bigger problems, he tells me I should reformat Mac OS. He told me reformatting a Mac is a heavier operation, that as opposed to Windows, it keeps some traces from the older installation, that it is impossible to remove everything, just like if this installation waws the layer on which I a going to reformat and over which the new Mac OS is going to install itself.
I am aware I shoud reformat, even though I did not try to fix the shuts down any other way. I realized that it happens to a lot of user while reading the discussions of some topics. Anyway, my priority concern is the fourth point of my topic. I would still like to know if reformatting is my only way, if there is any other solution.
Thaks in advance, sorry for my bad English, I am francophone.
    Regards

You have described two main problems:
    1. You used Monolingual in a way that may have removed all the ability to run non-Intel applications, e.g. MS Office.
    2. The shutdown problem.
To be sure of fixing the first problem, you can reinstall the OS. There are two choices for reinstalling: erase and install, or archive and install. They are described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
Once you have restored the OS, then you can see which applications do not work, and reinstall them. What your friend said about reinstalling the OS is not correct. If you do an archive and install, you will still have your old files from which you can choose what to keep. If you do an erase and install, none of your old files will remain on your disk.
If you are still having the problem with shutdown, contact Apple.

  • Can time machine restore system language files deleted by "monolingual'?

I've removed some important language files while using monolingual (namely -English (American) -English (British) not realizing these are subset and required).
I should've read the FAQ first... now some programs are appearing in weird character formats.
Can I replace those files with my Time Machine back ups?
Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file?
Since I did this only late last night, I should be able to just replace a certain system file folder, without causing much headache, I'm hoping!

    kacmaz wrote:

    Yes.
Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file?
That's the problem; language files aren't in a central location; each application has it's own set of language files, containing the translations of the messages for that application.
Since I did this only late last night, I should be able to just replace a certain system file folder, without causing much headache, I'm hoping!
I don't know much about Monolingual; I don't know if it removes language files from your System folders, or only Applications. And if you've installed any apps anywhere else, I don't know if it got them, too.
If you're only having trouble with apps, you might be ok to restore only Applications, but to get everything back the way it was, you'd need to do a full system restore, per #14 in the Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • How do I re install languages I deleted with monolingual

I used monolingual to delete languages and accidentally deleted some of the English sub languages like English (u.s.).

Yes, a reinstall is your only option. Monolingual gives very specific warnings on what may happen if you do not double check what you have asked it to delete. Unless you are desperately trying to retrieve a small part of free space, I would highly recommend not using such programs, as you have found out. A reinstall (do backup though) should install a full system including languages and leave your other data untouched.

  • Multilingual TMX files appear in training window as Monolingual

I uploaded several multilingual TMX files (version 1.4, exported from WorldServer [TM8 format]) but they appear as Type "Monolingual", so training cannot proceed.

  • Which files can I safely delete in my Pictures Folder/ iPhoto Library

    Hello
Thanks in advance for any advice on the following. I am trying to free up some space on my Macbook Pro hard drive. In the Pictures/ iPhoto Library folder, I seem to have a lot of duplicates. At this folder level, I have series of sub folders with years 2002-2006 listed, and there is also a folder titled data, which also has subfolders 2002-2006. Can I safely delete one set of folders without losing my pictures?
    Thank you
    Jonathan

    Johnathan:
In a word, NONE. Those are all necessary item for the operation of the library. Those files in the Originals folder are obviously the originals. Those in the Data folder are the thumbnails iPhoto uses to display in the main library window. The Modified files are those that you've editied, rotated, etc. To do any moving, renaming or editing of files directly from the folder is tantamount to committing the cardinal sin of iPhoto: Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
What with the low cost of external FW HDs, they are a very cost effective way to protect and preserve important files. As you may know it's recommended to have a minimum of 10G free space for optimum performance of the system and applications. More if possible. You can use Monolingual to remove any language module you don't need (be sure not to select English or American English and DO NOT run any of the Architecture items). I saved nearly 900MB the first time I ran it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
