Using MPEG Streamclip to Import Video to iMovie

Help!  I can't seem to import video from MPEG Streamclip to iMovie without losing quality.  What is the best format (Quicktime, MPEG4, or other) and compression (Apple Video, other) to use?  Any other parameters I need to know about within MPEG Streamclip?
Thank you!

Thank you, Tom.  I've ripped a DVD (legally) and have a short clip (5 minutes) that I want to export to iMovie to edit (titles at the begnning and end).  I do a lot of editing in iMovie and just want the best quality video I can get from MPEG Streamclip.

How do I import video into iMovie using Mac the Ripper? I ripped the video content onto my computer but it was not converted into a file that I can import.

I think it's trend for all users since we can get more funny from digital life. Also it's necessary sometimes for us to save our video or dvd files with other methods, i have no idea but use something like converters. To my experience, mactheripper is not what you want, maybe you can try this dvd ripper for mac.Maybe ripper is illegal, but i just get my oringinal files, and i want to do more with it, that's just it!

  • Hi, Importing video into iMovie from Windows XP

HI, Can anyone give me advice or point me to an instruction manual on how to import videos from Windows XP into iMovie. I just bought a new iMac and would like to include some of my old videos. thanks!

Can anyone give me advice or point me to an instruction manual on how to import videos from Windows XP into iMovie.
I would probably use MPEG Streamclip (free) for this. There are versions for both Mac and PC platforms and if the PC version works the same as the Mac version, it will allow you to convert your files to DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264 video with Linear PCM, MPEG-4 (AAC), or other audio compression formats know to be accepted by iMovie '08.

You can do this with a free app called MPEG Streamclip and a $20 quicktime component from Apple.

Thanks for the reply with additional details.
In order to help you with the Elements Organizer 13 and Premiere Elements 13 issues, we need details of that video from iMovie.
You should be able to get the important details of the iMovie video by telling us the export settings that you used for the iMovie export.
    Minimum information..
    Video Compression
    Audio Compression
    File Extension
    Frame Size
First, update Premiere Elements 13 and Elements Organizer 13 each to the 13.1 Update (See Help Menu/Update in an opened
    Premiere Elements 13 project.)
We will be watching for further details in order to plan and carry out troubleshooting strategy.
    Thank you.

  • Can I use my PC to Optimize Video for iMovie?

I use a GoPro camera which creates mp4 files and I find it takes hours for iMovie to optimize 4hrs worth of files. I'd like to off-load some of the processing to my PC. Run it over-night. Whatever...
Is there any way to use the PC version of MPEG Streamclip to do this? I don't see the AIC codec in the export list on the PC. So I'm guessing that since it's not a compatible PC format, they intentionally left it off the list.
Any ideas, on how to leverage my available PC computing power, would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in adavnce.

Well, I was trying to find a way to speed up the whole optimizing process by dividing the work load to many computers so that I could get to the editing process quicker. I suspect that MPEG Streamclip will convert at about the same speed as iMovie. Having said that, there might be a time advantage of using MPEG Streamclip by choosing selected clips vs doing the whole thing. The problem being, if you decide that you wanted a bit more of a clip from the original footage, you'd have to re-convert the whole clip. I'd have to weigh those options.
Either that or do all the conversions over night and do editing the next day.

  • Import video to iMovie from Panasonic SDR-H250

    Hello!!
I have my MacBook2,1 and camcorder Panasonic SDR-H250, when i connect them together, camcorder has folder with name "SD Video" there's been files format MOD, and other files with format MOI, PGI, what is it i don't understand?!. When i was trying import video to IMovie, iMovie told me "Error during Import" so how i understand, first i need to convert them??!!!! but for what format is better i don't know???? because i don't what to lost high quality and Large-format video. And which converter i should to use??!!!
Thank you so much in advance for any help if you can give me!
    PS: I have iMovieHD 6.0.3 (267.2)

If you can the video clips onto your computer you can use mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.

  • Importing video in imovie is jumpy!

When I import video into imovie the video gets jumpy. I play it while I try to edit and the film jumps around. It is like the film is missing milliseconds of the video. Does anyone have any idea about this or ever have this kind of trouble?

I've had the same problems using imovie '08 but it is infrequent and has only happened when importing certain analog not digital video tapes. I can watch the video flowing without interuption on the camcorder but intermitantly the actual imported film hangs up with intermitant breaks in the recording process with as you say milliseconds lost. I have tried closing all other programs for fear they may be interupting without success. And as I said it has only happened a few times , only with analog manual imports and the extent of the footage lost is variable.... Any suggestions????

  • Error converting .mov to .avi using MPEG Streamclip

    Hi folks,
I'm trying to convert an .mov to an .avi for a client using MPEG Streamclip.  I have exported a high res master copy of the video from Final Cut (it's a .mov format is Pro Res 422 1920x1080 50i).
So when I bring this file into MPEG Streamclip, I select File > Export to Avi.... and then the following settings:
    DivX Codec
    Quality 75%
The compression starts and I instantly get the error "Compression Error"
When this started I installed the lastest version of DivX however since I am new to exporting as .avi I am completely lost.  I was able to get MPEG Streamclip to export using Apple Cinepak however the quality is awful so I am looking for another solution. I have also tried converting from my highest resolution MPEG-4 export, however I get the same result.
I am thinking that maybe my DivX codec isn't installed, or there is some problem with it? However I thought a new installation of DivX would fix this.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I would suggest exporting three small test files using H264 codec at three different rezolutions.
Play them back and if satisfied send them to your client to evaluate so they can decide what will work for them.
1280x720 H264  files are what we give to our clients these days as  "high quality' video.
Smaller files might be recommended for faster download and smoother playback on their system.

  • Using MPEG Streamclip to convert files for EX-1 sequence

I am trying to use MPEG Streamclip to convert mp4 and mpeg files in order to edit them in the same sequence as my EX-1 footage. What settings should I use on MPEG Streamclip that would be most appropriate for seamlessly editing the former MPEG and mp4 files with the EX-1 footage? Any thoughts on what sequence settings I should use? Right now I have it set as "XDCam Ex 1080p24 VBR" but every time I bring in files I have tried to convert using MPEG Streamclip, they need to render and I'm trying to avoid that. Thanks!

    Thanks for the help

  • Process for exporting in FCPX and then using MPEG Streamclip to downgrade?

I have footage shot with a 5Diii, and it is set at 1920x1080, 23.98p.
When I export through FCPX at H.264, it gives me a beautiful master file, but is larger than the 4GB that I need.
What is the process for using MPEG Streamclip to get a smaller file?
Do I export a master file in FCPX first using a different codec, and then use MPEG Streamclip to compress it? If so, what would be the best setting to export from FCPX, and then what would be the best setting to compress at in MPEG streamclip?
My goal is to be as close to 1080HD as possible.

Here is the background story....... I provide movie files on a DVD delivery (files in SD quality) and then also give a copy of the same films on a flash drive so clients can have it in HD quality, and plug the flash drive directly into the TV.
This always worked fine in the past until I ran into a movie file that is 4.7GB, and would not copy onto the flash drive, since flash drives only accept files up to 4GB.
So I tried reformating the flashdrive to exFAT. It allowed me to copy the 4.7GB on the flashdrive, but when I tried plugging it in directly to the TV, the TV did not recognize the drive. (I learned that exFAT is not always compatable with all TVs.)
My other option would be to download an app to let me reformat the drive into NTFS which accepts files bigger than 4GB, and supposedly works better with TVs. I haven't tried this yet because I am worried that downloading that app might mess up my computer. ???????
So....I have come to the conclusion that the only other thing I can do is compress the 4.7GB file to be 4GB (or less) so it will fit on the flash drive which I believe had an original format was MS-DOS FAT.
Are you suggesting instead of exporting the file from FCPX in H264, I should do it in ProRes? The file will be much larger than 4GB, but, then I can compress it, without losing as much of the quality as I would if I compressed an H264 file? Either way it needs to be 4GB or less, so I don't know if that defeats the purpose of using a ProRes file to begin with.
Thank you so much for helping with this!

I know they both should match. Question is, should I re convert the clips in mpeg using different size settings? Or should I change the sequence settings? how?

  • Rendering while converting from DVD using MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize

Is there anyway to make rendered .mov file, while converting from DVD to .mov, using MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize for final cut pro?
    Thanks.

Are you asking if there's a way to export from mpegstreamclip so you don't need to render when you edit with the file in fcp?  If so, yes...  (sorry couldn't resist).
What format is your sequence in fcp (make the timeline active and hit command(apple)-zero?   Note the pixel dimensions, frame rate and compressor settings and set the quicktime options in mpegstreamclip export dialog to match them.  You should be good to go.
Also, you might do some searching here.  Pretty sure someone posted a link to a tutorial on how to do this,
