Using multiple accounts in Family Sharing

Can iTunes family sharing members purchase from their own accounts?

Good question. I am currently trying to use my App store credit to buy an app but it will only ty and charge my spouses account.

  • How do I use multiple accounts on the same Mac with Apple TV2?

I have home sharing turned on in two separate accounts on a single MacPro.  When I am logged into both accounts, I can see both accounts' iTunes Libraries available in the AppleTV2.  However, when I try to open each account iTunes Library in the AppleTV2, only one account will open (whichever one I logged into first).  (In other words, I log into Account1 then open iTunes with Home Sharing On, then log into Account2 (while Account1 is still logged on), open iTunes with Home Sharing On. AppleTV2 shows Account1 Library and Account2 Library under Computers, but will only load Account1 Library.  Account2 Library will just cause AppleTV2 to search for the Library then give an error.)  How come AppleTV2 can see both Libraries but will only open one Library?  How can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    zpockets

Thank you for replying.  Both of the accounts are Admin accounts.  The Libraries are kept in the user/music/itunes/itunes media folder on each account.  However, I do use multiple iTunes Libraries on my Account1.  One of the Libraries I use in Account1 is on a separate internal HD.  However, the other Libraries I use in Account1 are stored in user/music/itunes/itunes media folder on the main HD (which hosts both Account1 and Account2).  It doesn't seem to matter whether I am using an iTunes Library on an external drive or the main drive in Account1, I still get the same problem: only account1 library will load.  AppleTV sees that the Account2 Library is there, but it won't load it.

  • A method to convert an existing iCloud account to a Child iCloud Account for Family Sharing

I do not see any method by which to convert an existing iCloud account (we have three set up for our kids, all their birthdays are set later than their actual birthdays so we could grab their actual names before they were all gone years ago) to a new Child iCloud Account for use with Family Sharing (namely to be able to take advantage of the new features: Family Calendar, Photostream, 'Ask to Buy' on the Stores, etc. on their own iPad minis.
If this is just not possible under the current scheme, please oh please Apple make this an option - there are probably thousands of others in this same boat, and I refuse to give up my kids' iCloud accounts!

I've read every string and workaround solution on these forums (to date). There's really no good options here.
USER STORY: My kid (age 7) has an iPad 2.  I created an email address for him (which he doesn't know about). I created an apple ID for him (which he also doesn't know or care about) and I set up his Apple ID with my credit card.  In addition I've set up parental controls on the iPad to lock it down and make it more age appropriate.   Over the past year or so it's worked out fine, he sees something he might like, brings the iPad to me and if I approve, I enter the Apple ID Password  and approve the purchase.   After a year of doing this, he has a nice little collection of apps, kid songs, a few movies, etc.   I would like to move my kid over to a legitimate kid account now that Apple has released features that support this.  Currently the ability to convert an account does not exist. Seems like it should be easy to change a birthday, etc.
Almost seems like Apple is penalizing us for getting our kid an iPad last year.
Apple  - Please consider my user story for your upcoming feature enhancements.

  • Should I switch from shared iCloud account with wife to two separate accounts with family sharing?

My wife and I have always shared 1 iCloud accpunt between our our 5s phones, iPad, and an old 4s which is now just a toy for our toddler. With ios 8 I am not sure if it is possible or practical any more. We do it to share purchases and the photo stream and a Google calendar.
With ios 8, it seems to be impossible for both of our phones to share their location. From what I can tell, only 1 device at a time on the icloud account can share its location. Is that a correct assumption? And icloud no longer gives the option for each of us to sign into separate itunes accounts on find my friends. We are forced to sign in with our 1 shared iCloud account. So we can no longer use find my friends to see each other's location.
So has ios8 rending sharing an iCloud account useless? I'm wondering if we now need to have separate accounts and link them with family sharing. Will we lose the benefits of having our 1 shared account? I just wanted to make sure we wouldn't lose anything if I set her up with a new account and linked it with family sharing.

I have lots of questions about this and other things too; I have been sharing my account with my wife and daughter for years through 10s of iPhones and iPads and with the introduction of IOS8 we are having lots of new and not so fun problems.
As to your question about location.  I have three iPhones and one iPad using the same account now (on IOS 8) and all four devices show up with Find my iPhone.  My wife's was not showing up today but I went in and turned on the new feature "Send last Location" and all of a sudden her phone was able to be found again.  Not sure if that will solve your problem but just wanted you to know that I have the four devices all showing up in Find my iPhone with a shared account.

  • Can't download free app purchased under another account once Family Sharing is enabled

I "purchased" Onedrive for iPhone years ago. Then I turned on family sharing on my daughters phone. She couldn't update Onedrive because she hadn't purchased it, so I deleted it as I had for others and tried to download it again. However, this fails with the error message:
"Redownload Unavailable with This Apple Id
This redownload is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
    OK"
I tried finding it from her phone under my purchases, but it is not listed there. However, on my phone, it does show up as a purchase. I'm completely baffled on how to work around this. Anyway to force a repurchase of a "free" app?

If you are using the Purchased tab where your purchases are listed to re-download it then you shouldn't be charged. If you are being asked to enter your credit card details when trying to download it via that tab then that will be for account verfication purposes - you are currently in the country where your account is based ?

  • Will there be a way to merge iCloud accounts for family sharing in iOS 8?

My family of four has 5 Apple IDs. Each of us has a personal one that we use for mail, contacts, and calendars and we all share an Apple ID for use with the iTunes and App Stores. This way, we can all currently share content without having to buy it four times. However, Apple has solved this problem in iOS 8 with family sharing.
My question is how should I handle this with my current lineup of Apple IDs. I know there's currently no way to merge two Apple IDs into one, and I don't want to just transfer my credit card to my personal Apple ID, as I will lose my purchase history. I know I could add my current "shared" ID to our family account in iOS 8, but I'd like not to have a duplicate of myself. Any advice would be appreciated!

It's not necessary to merge the iCloud and iTunes Store accounts. The Family Organizer should use their own iCloud account when setting up Family Sharing. You'll also be asked to supply the iTunes Store account you want to use to share music, movies, apps, etc., with your family during the setup process. It appears Apple has already addressed this common problem.

  • Switching iTunes accounts for family sharing

I Have one iTunes accounts and everyone in the family is using it. Hubby's phone and 2 kids iPads plus my phone and iPad.
I Want to set everyone up their own and connect with family sharing BUT:
is There a way to switch hubby's phone from my iTunes account to his new one without wiping his contacts /apps/ calendar? And switch the kids to their own without wiping game progress?

You have posted your question in a relatively ow traffic forum - Using Apple Support Communities, basically concerned with how to use, navigate, find stuff in he overall Discussions area.

  • Separate iTunes accounts with family sharing

I would like to keep my children's iTunes accounts separate as they use gift cards to pay for their purchases.  Is this possible with Family Sharing?

  • Use a giftcard on family sharing

I'm on family sharing, but I have a $30 giftcard that I want to use. How do I use the gift card rather than the card on our family sharing plan?

    Hi Ed –
I have the giftcard balance on my account (my email address), but our family organizer is under a different apple ID account. Therefore, when I hit "buy" it's making our family organizer approve and says it will be charged to his AMEX card. This is not waht I want to do. I have the giftcard on my account and I want to buy from my giftcard balance – not a credit card. How does that work?
    Mel,
If you have sufficient store credit, your purchases should go to that before the FO's credit card.  Here is the info from the document Family purchases and payments:
"After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer's card."
It is possible that the message to the FO does not correctly account for this, and just has a default saying it will go to the credit card.  I suggest you give it a try on a 99 cent purchase.  I expect it will apply as stated in the Apple document, but if not, contact iTunes Customer Service.

  • Using iTunes credits with Family Sharing

I used to have a debit card associated with my Apple ID, but now that we've enabled Family Sharing with a child on the account, I am required to use a credit card. However, I don't want to put iTunes charges on a credit card. I thought I could avoid this by adding iTunes credit to our accounts. So, I decided to test this. We have her settings set to "ask to buy".
I have credit on my (the organizer's) account. I attempted to purchase a song using my daughter's account on her device. I thought I was supposed to get a message on my phone telling me that she was requesting to make a purchase. Instead, I got a message on her account on her device with a pop-up that said I needed to enter my security code (on her device).
    My questions:
    - Why was I not notified on my device that she was attempting to make a purchase? Nothing I read suggested that she would get messages on her device that I had to enter information on it. Was this a one-off thing for setting it up? Or, does this only work with apps and not music?
    - If I entered the security code, would it charge my credit card or would it realize that I had credit on my account and deduct it from there first?
    - If I apply credit to her account, is it true that I will not get a message to verify her purchase?
    Thanks for any insight.

iTunes store credit is used for payment if it is on the account.  By that, if your daughter has store credit, and she makes a purchase, it would be deducted from her store credit - not yours.  So if two children (Billy and John) each have $10.00 in their respective accounts, only THEY can use the credits - iTunes store credit is not shared.  If there is not sufficient store credit, then the organizer's credit card will be charged to cover the purchase.
Regarding the pop up security code message, do you still have a restriction set on her device?  If so, that could be interfering with the "Ask to Buy" feature of family sharing.
Regarding the last question, I am not sure.  The documents are not very specific, but I have read that if Ask to Buy is enabled, you will receive notification if the child tries to download free apps.

  • Setting up multiple iPads w/Family Sharing with different Apple IDs (previously shared one Apple ID).

My three children each receive iPad minis from their generous grandparents last year; all were using my Apple ID so that we could share purchased content.  However, they could not play games with each other using GameCenter (all one Apple ID) and it would be good to iMessage/FaceTime each other.  So Family Sharing seems great, but it seems to me that I will have to sign out of my Apple ID on each of their devices, which means that they will love all of their data, etc.
Can I change each child's iPad mini from my Apple ID to theirs and then use a backup to restore their data?
    Thank you.

I apologize, but my grammar and spelling were full of errors They "received" iPad minis...
And I am afraid that they will "lose" (not love) all of their data.
    Thanks.

  • Child account in family sharing asking for payment verification?

I am the organiser of my family sharing group which includes my three children (under 18). Today my son tried to download a Free app which would usually send a request to me to approve however instead it is asking on his iPad to provide payment account verification ie add my credit card details. I cannot choose None (it is greyed out) and I don't understand why I would need to add my credit card details to his iPad to verify his account when all purchases should be coming through my account.
    Any suggestions?

The issue seems to have resolved itself, I assume the issue was a glitch on Apple's end.

  • Why not use gift card for family sharing?

This family sharing feature seems great.  But long gone are the days where I had a credit card on file.  These days I only use gift cards.  But system really wants me to have a credit card to activate this family sharing?  Has anyone been able to do with pure gift cards?
    thanks

    Hi Kestelli,
In order to set up Family Sharing the family organizer must have a credit card or debit card to use for billing. See this article -
    Family purchases and payments
If a family member, including the organizer makes a purchase and has gift or store credit, that purchase is first billed to that credit. Family members purchases may not be billed to the organizers store credit unless they are the organizer. See this article -
How iTunes Store purchases are billed
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L

  • Apple TV - Using multiple accounts

Is it possible to use Apple TV with two different ITunes accounts and to switch between the two accounts easily? If so, how?

I'm trying to find the answer to this question, too.  I've looked at a lot of other posts that are similar, but they all take a tangent about homesharing and multiple Macs.   The question that I'd like to see answered or should I say the problem I'd like solved is this...
One TV with Apple TV.  The generation that is the little black box (I think it runs a version of iOS, but not sure).  I set this up and autorized it with my account.  I'd like my mom, dad, and brother to be able to authorize thier accounts, too.  If we are all sitting there, I'd like to be able to watch something that my brother purchased.  Later, if we want to watch something I purchased, we should be able to do that with out having to re-authorize my account.  One reason is they might want to watch my content when I'm not present.  The other reason, is that I don't want to 'type' in my password with everybody watching as I enter it.  I don't want everybody to know my password!  I don't want people renting content with my account, which would happen if they new my password.  We don't have a Mac that is sharing content.  It's just the AppleTV and a couple of iPads and iPhones.
I would think we should be able to authorize every ones account in the household and all enjoy that content.  If some one wants to rent or purchase content, they can supply thier password to autorize that purchase.  But everybody in the house should be able to have the AppleTV autorized to play their content.
