Using multiple magsafe Power adapters...

I need to know if it´s possible to use my old 85W magsafe power adapter from my previous MBPro, or I just can use the original 45 W Magsafe power adapter that comes with the MBA ?
Is there a risk to damage something?

There is no risk - the 24" and 27" supply up to 85W thru the integrated MagSafe connector for example
Apart from the smaller form factor, I cannot see why Apple will not standardise on the 85W and have one power adapter for all MagSafe equipped portables
Surely it make for a long term saving due to less inventory at Apple and would be less confusing for the consumer especially if you have ever tried to power on a 15" or 17" MBP using an MBA specific charger...

  • My power socket destroys MagSafe power adapters?

I don't have the slightest clue how, but one of my MagSafe power adapters for my MacBook Pro just failed completely, and didn't work with my other MBP and on another socket. So I said to myself "Ok, I'll get another one from Apple since its under warenty" and plugged another MagSafe into the same socket, and plugged it in and it charged my computer all the way. This one i got to watch die. The green LED flashed a couple of times, and then went dead. I've done all the troubleshooting, and nothing works. Two questions: What can I do to fix this? And do you think its my socket? It never destroyed my Klipsh speakers. I need this for work, and a dead battery isn't going to cut it. BTW, I have installed 10.6.8, even though my product list doesn't say so.

Will do. Now its acting up. It will come on, then go off. If i move the cord around, it comes back. Now im thinking its my computer.
They should be able to work that out for you and put your mind at ease. Good luck to you.

  • Can I use my old magsafe power adapter?

I just bought MacBook Air, because my MacBook Pro died... I need two magsafe power adapters (for work and home) and I was wondering whether I could use my old ones from my MacBook Pro? The watt is way off, though (85 W versus 45W). Any experiences?
    Thank you,
    Andrea

Yes, you can use the adapter of a higher wattage.

  • Are power adapters interchangeable?

We have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro and a late-2010 MacBook Air. I know Macs have different power chargers--45W, 60W, or 85W--but the magnetic connector connects to all of them. Is there a problem using one charger for another Mac?

MacBook/Air models can have a different shaped magnetic plug due to
the locations of the magsafe port on the computer's body; angular. So
if looking to buy one for certain Air models, the plug/port have to match.
The Air magsafe is still available at the Store, a 45W model.
Top MacBook/Pros usually can use a higher output 85W magsafe adapter
especially if one expects to use it at highest performance while charging
the battery; and depending on configuration, other power needs. Higher
automatically will not over-power the lesser demands in other MacBooks.
These can be backward compatible in so much as a high-output adapter
may work with a lower-power device. If the port is compatible.

exist; if there is a different part number, contact Apple Store or sales

  • Is it ok to use the other macbook power adapters with the mb air?

I have a few extra power adapters for the Macbook Pro and Macbook. Does anyone know what Apple officially says about plugging one of those into the Macbook Air? I've heard rumors that it's risky and might void the warranty, but I would like to see a direct quote if there is one.
I know those other magsafe plugs are impossible to use if you keep the MBAir on a flat surface, but it's definitely convenient to use a spare Macbook Pro / Macbook power adapter if you put your Air on a laptop stand, or even on a book.

I think we are mixing terms here.
I believe the Macbook Air, Macbook and Macbook Pro power adapters are 45W, 60W and 85W respectively. The power adapters don't push power to the notebooks, the notebooks draw power from the power adapters, Consequently you can always use a higher wattage adapter.
The Macbook and Macbook Pro use different voltages but all the power adapters seem to be able to use each. The Macbook Pro uses 4.6A (amps) and the Macbook uses 3.65A and the Macbook Air 3.1A. Pushing to many amps to a device would ruin the unit, but it seems like this has been planned as you can mix and match all the magsafe adapters today and they all function properly.
I have read that the notebook knows whether it can draw enough power to recharge the battery or only enough to run the computer while it is on and that in the latter case it will charge the battery when the notebook turns off. Whether this is bad for the charger or the notebook is unclear, but since the notebooks seem to respond intelligently in those different situations I think that the apple engineers have planned accordingly. If you draw too much power from the airline adapter for example, the airline adapter will simply stop providing power temporarily and the light will go off for a moment.

  • Do Apple MagSafe 2 power adapters break easily?

I was about to order a Magsafe 2 power adapter for my rMBP so I could keep one at home and one at work.  But there are hundreds of reviews at store.apple.com saying they break easily, the wires fray, etc.  but I've seen very few complaints about them on this or other user forums, and none of the five I've owned for various MacBooks since 2010 have ever broke.
Are Macbook power adapters really so unreliable and prone to breaking?  Or is it possible that the reviews at Store.apple.com are so dominated by trolls as to be unreliable?

People don't often write reviews about things as mundane as power adapters unless they have something to complain about. I have one that's only recently started to fray. It's four years old. I have many others as old, or older, and they're fine. Treat them carefully and they ought to last the life of your Mac.

  • New 13" Macbook Pro trying to connect to a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 as second monitor. I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. The Macbook does not sense the second monitor (TV). Help?!

I've been a Mac since 2008, so I know my way around the system pretty well. This issue, however, has me stumped. I had an iMac until now and only now am I experiencing some difficulty with my new MacBook Pro. The model I have is the newest 13" Macbook Pro model and I'm trying to connect a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 42" HDTV as a second monitor via the Thunderbolt port.
It worked the first two times and hasn't worked since, after 10-15 attempts with different configurations, turning things on n off, restarting the mac, unplugging the cables, adapters, TV, resetting the P RAM, etc... I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. No matter what I do, the Macbook does not sense the TV as a second monitor anymore.
I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store, and their "genius" there had it working fine with a DVI connection to a regular monitor. The Panasonic TV I have has HDMI connections and one VGA connection which does not support HD, but no DVI option. I want an HD connection to mirror or extend my MacBook Pro screen. At the Apple Store, they didn't have a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, so he could not try that out for me.
Anyone else have this configuration or another similar one with a Panasonic HDTV?
    Ideas? Suggestions? Anything?! Help!!
P.S. I'm running Mountain Lion, if that wasn't already obvious. Everything is up to date in my App Store as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Can I use other Apple USB Power Adapters with iPad

I am looking for a spare  Apple Power Adapter to charge my iPad.  I have an iPad (3rd Generation), which came with a 10W USB Power Adapter, Model A1357, output 5.1V. 2.4A USB Power Adapter.  I have two other Apple Power Adapters 1) iPod Power Adapter, Model A1070, output 13V, .62A Firewire Power Adapter, 2) USB Power Adapter, Model A 1265, Output 5V, 1A,and  3) USB Car Adapter,   Can either of the latter three Power Adapters be used to charge my iPad

Technically, yes, but they will trigger the 'not charging' because they're not giving out the 10W that your device wants. And charging with them will take significantly longer than the ipad charger.
I'd only use them as a 'shucks, left my iPad charger at home and I'm in a pinch' situation.
Your best bet would be to either get another iPad charger, or if you're trying to use one adapter for several devices, use the iPad one for the rest of your stuff.

  • HT4341 which of the power adapters can i use in Peru, South America?

    Hello:
I'll be travelling down to Peru next month and I need to know which of the power adapters I can use there to charge my laptop. The electricity is 220v in Peru and not 110v like the U.S.

Most Mac equipment these days adapts to 110 Volt 208 Volt or 220 Volt power, 50 or 60 Hz, automatically. For a MacBook, you would need a power cord that ends in the local plug or an adapter from local plug to US standard "parallel two prong, U-ground".
For advice on specific equipment, you would need to post the model, and Readers will try to look it up for you.

  • Can Macbook(2007 late) 60W MagSafe Power Adapter be used for New Macbook Air 13" ?

I just upgrade my old Macbook (2007 late) to the new Macbook Air 13" (2012 Mid).
The old Macbook have a 60W Magsafe power adaptor, it's T style.
I am wondering if this kind of old T style 60W magsafe adaptor can be used on my new Macbook Air which is using magsafe 2, if I just purchace a "magsafe to magsafe 2 converter" on the Apple Store?
    Can anybody share your experience?

    Thanks captfred's reply.
I go to Apple reseller to get the "Magsafe to Magsafe 2 converter" and test it with my old T-style 60W adaptor.
So far, my new Macbook Air is still working.
Hope my experience can help other user.
BTW, I don't know how to change "This helped me" to "This solved my question".
So, sorry captfred, I can't add your point.

  • 85W or 60W MagSafe power adapter?

I'm buying an extra power adapter for my MacBook to use at the office.
Both the 85 watt MacBook Pro and 60 watt MacBook power adapters have MagSafe on them. They are both the same price. Should I consider the 85 watt adapter for my black MacBook? I was thinking that I could get the larger wattage version so that I'm not fully taxing the unit, allowing it to run cooler and potentially prolonging the life.
I know this is kind of an off-the-wall question, but I'm curious about these things. Any thoughts are welcome.

  • Macbook Power Adapters

I have a two-year old Macbook Intel Core Duo. It has gone through 4 power adapters.
The first two power adapters had the issue of the cord breaking where it connects to the transformer. The third one simply stopped working, it was getting no power to the computer. I went to an Apple Authorized store to have someone look at it, they said there was nothing they could do. Apple's webpage said that they could evaluate them for replacement if necessary.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1414?viewlocale=en_US
After going to the authorized store, I called Apple and was told that they wouldn't do anything about it and I should try to take it back to Best Buy since I had bought it there and "it would be silly to buy an new one if they would replace it." I responded that it was silly they can't make a power adapter that works.
Basically, I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar issues and how to best keep power adapter number four from breaking.

I also have an Intel Macbook that came with a 60W magsafe adapter. The wire that permanently connects to the square adapter brick has severed slightly and now the power cuts in and out. I am always gentle with electrical cords, but i think this happened while it was in my backpack. Now when i use the adapter (have to hold the wire in just the right position) there is often a burning electrical smell - and that just seems wrong - maybe this 60W unit runs too hot anyway. So obviously i must buy a new adapter for 80 bucks, but i was wondering if anyone has repaired this wiring at home. I have looked under the torn insulation and it looks like there's an outside wire wrapped in a shielded pattern around another inside wire. Maybe a repair like this is over my head? Anyone try this before?
