Using Multiple Speakers AppleTV has slight lag or delay to audio

Hello all!
I recently purchased an Apple TV and have updated it to the latest versions as is all my software on my mac. For the last year I have used AirPort Express for streaming to my receiver across the room using a standard 1/8" to RCA stereo connection. When played on my computer at the same time it creates a nice room filling sound.
However, I tried using the Apple TV as the remote speaker instead of the AirPort Express since I have it hooked up with the optical cable instead for movies and what not obviously. However, there is a very slight delay when using the AppleTV as a remote speaker giving a slight reverb effect to the music playback.
I am going to test a regular analog audio out from the AppleTV later tonight in case it my be a signal processing issue with my receiver (Yamaha HTR-5500). However if anyone has any ideas in the interim, they would be appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply.
Both the Airport Express and the AppleTV go to the same receiver and therefore go to the same 5.1 speaker set up. It is either the Computer & AirPort Express or Computer & AppleTV going at the same time. I don't use all 3 out at the same time since that would be pointless.
Here is the basic hardware/network setup:
- Ethernet connection from wall goes into AirPort Express for network dedicated for my upstairs man cave
- Wireless connection feeds my iMac which in turn feeds the audio signal for AirTunes back to the AirPort Express
- The Audio from the AirPort express goes directly into my receiver.
- The AppleTV is wirelessly connected to the network as well.
I am aware of the mini-tos link on the AirPort Express but the way I have it set up it is also is the wireless router for my office and therefore is plugged directly into to the wall and the extra adapter is just a bit too much weight on it so i stuck with the basic stereo out since I only use it for music and anything in ProLogic cam be through a regular stereo signal if need be.
But yeah, I am going to try the analog out on the AppleTV tonight and whatever my results are I will post them here. Thanks so much!

The New Version Of iTunes Wont let me use "multiple speakers" thru airtunes with airport express.
I have used airport express to play music while simultaneously playing it thru my computer speakers, but the new version of iTunes wont let me select "Multiple Speakers" from the menu at the bottom of the window

There doesn't seem to be a link to this firmware update, can you repost it? I'm having the same problem.

  • About iPad iOS 4.2 beta Airplay can't use multiple speakers?

About iPad airplay can't use multiple speakers?
My iPad use the latest ios4.2 beta1 ,there is 3 airport express in my house.
In iOS 3.2 I can use the App "Remote" to control 3 speakers perfectly, but "Remote" even can install in ios4.2 ,not use smoothly.
After I upgrade iOS to 4.2, I can use Airplay to control each speaker without "Remote",but can't use multiple speakers at the same time. Is anyone like me?
Is there have any other solution can fix this problem?
    Thanks!

I completely agree with Tamara, if you are running iOS 4.2, then you should also realize that there are two aveanues for you to get questions answered
    1) the developer forums (there is a specific forum area for 4.2 questions, marked in a big red banner across the top saying something about confidentiality.)
    2) The bug reporting tool available to developers, noted at the top of the iOS 4.2 forum page. When you go there read the format intructions linked to at the top of the form to ensure you put it in the format that is required for formal developer bug reports.

  • Sound Drop Out When Attempting to Use Multiple Speakers

Disclaimer: I've spent 3-4 hours searching for the answer, so - I'm posting another "Sound Drop Out" thread.. sorry!
I have 1 new AirPort Extreme, and 3 Expresses. I can stream music to one at a time without much problem. As soon as I try to go to more than 1 the sound gets very, very choppy (this includes 1 airport express and the computer speakers).
My iTunes library is on a USB airport disk shared from the Extreme.
I see many posts about not being able to connect to multiple speakers with Leopard 10.5.1 (which I am using) - but I am not getting the error messages those people are seeing. Also, my firewall is configured correctly.
My network is well within 150ft. The extreme is creating a network, and all the expresses are configured to join the network. I thought of setting up a WDS network, but would this be worth the trouble (I am having problems getting it configured correctly)?
I doubt signal strength is a problem. If I can stream to the express alone, why cant I play to the express and the computer speakers simultaneously? That wouldn't have anything to do with the wireless network signal strength?
Looking forward to your suggestions. I'm spending way too much time getting this to work. Apple is supposed to "just work" -right? LOL.

I think this has to do with the airport scanning for different networks. I have 2 airport express stations hooked up in different rooms, and the speakers drop out all the time. It *****.
But when I watch the airport on my laptop (streaming the music), the time counter next to the airport icon goes away momentarily. I think it's somehow disconnected from the network, or is scanning networks.
There are a number of posts regarding the airport constantly scanning networks, but I haven't found anything yet that helps keep the airport connected. It definitely seems to be worse in the evenings when a lot of people are using their computers.
When your speakers drop out, do the numbers next to the airport icon (on the serving computer) freeze or disappear?

  • Using multiple speakers with AirPlay on iPad

On my Mac I can play music from iTunes on my computer, Apple TV and on my Airport Express. But on the iPad I can only pick one, is there anyway i can choose multiple speakers on the iPad?

    HOUSE PARTY SUCCESS!!!
I have an ATV3 in the living room, one in the bedroom, and one in the garage (for streaming music out there too...).  To get the whole compound in sync and have the same music everywhere AND control it from my iPhone, it was / is this easy:
In iTunes, select multiple airplay devices so everywhere you want the music playing is selected.  Use the Apple Remote app on your iPhone / iPad and control your iTunes, NOT your ATV.  Bada-bing!  Full house party music to all the devices and controlled by the phone in your pocket!!!
They should still let you do this from any iOS device directly though...
    Enjoy!

  • Get -3256 error when trying to use "multiple speakers" in iTunes

I have had a LOT of Airport problems since switching to Leopard. For the moment, the Airport does seem to now work. I use an Airport Extreme 802.11n, and an Airport Express using WDS. I had a TON of problems with my MBP connecting, running great, then slowly losing bandwidth. For the moment, all is working. The next hassle was that my formerly working WDS stopped working. Now, the base station says WDS is happy. iTunes show the Airport Express is available to broadcast to.
It lets me select multiple speakers, but then gives and error -3256.

I think that I just solved your multiple speaker issue in another post; check out: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5765343&#5765343. Hope this solution works for you too.

  • Error -3256 attempting to use multiple Speakers

I have the option for multiple speakers and I have updated my airport express firmware on both AX's. However when attempting multiple speakers I get an error -3256 for each AX. Both AX's work fine individually. I am on 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.1 Anybody with ideas?

    Go here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304371
I followed these instructions and now it works.

  • My ipod classic 5th generation is not playing any kind of audio. i tried resetting it and i used multiple speakers/ear buds. nothing worked. do you have any other suggestions?

My ipod classic (5th generation) is not playing any audio. when i play a song the little picture of the album cover comes up and the seconds clock and the blue line come up and change/move, but there is no sound. i have tried multiple speakers/ear buds and i have tried to reset it but notheing worked.
    What should i do?

Assuming that you actually have the volume turned up (you don't say that you have, after all), make sure that the Volume Limit is not turned all the way down.
Look in the Settings/Volume Limit menu. The small arrow controls the volume as well.

  • Airport Express choppy when using multiple speakers

Had a big New Year's party. I setup my recent Mac mini in one room wired directly to a stereo, and my Airport Express (latest model that looks like a white Apple TV) in another room connected to another stereo. I use the Airport Express a lot and it works flawlessly when streaming from iPhone / iPad / iTunes on the Mac.
Everything is running the latest versions (iTunes 11.1.3 (8), Mavericks 10.9, newest firmware on Airport). My network uses an Airport Extreme 802.11n (flat model, not later tower model).
So... I wanted music to play in both rooms, something that I've done at previous parties with no issue - but the music would cut in and out from the Airport Express! Disappointing to say the least.
    I troubleshooted all I could:
    - Setup the Airport Express from Extend Wireless Network to Connect to Wireless Network
    - Tried 2.4 GHz and 5.4 GHz networks
    - Ensure CPU usage on Mac was low, and no other programs running
    - Restart it all (Airport Extreme, Airport Express, Mac)
    - Etc.
All signal strenghts were fine. Whenever I streamed from iPhone directly to Airport Express it was perfect. Only from iTunes to both speakers did I have issues.
Anyone seen this? This has worked perfectly for me before!

    This is known to happen:

Try a different broadcast channel on the wireless router.

  • Can't use multiple speakers?

when trying to play music on both my desktop and my stereo (where the music is playing now), after clicking on the mulltiple speakers tab, I get a message saying that my express "doesn't support playback as part of a group."
can someone tell me why this so and if there is something I can do about it?
    thanks,
    jeff

Upgrade the Express to firmware 6.3.

  • How can I use airplay with multiple speakers from my iPod?

I recently purchased a bluetooth wireless speaker in hopes that, while the ipod is docked on a speaker system, I can listen to my music from both set of speakers.  Is there anyway to use multiple speakers with my ipod through the airplay system or an app that I can download to enhance my music listening experience?

Based on previous discussions, You can only AiPlay to one set of speakers.

  • Multiple Speakers goes Wonky when using a wireless bridge

I used to use multiple speakers on iTunes, but lost a lot of connections to the AE due to distance. My WLAN is a D-LINK DI-624.
I put in a DLINK DWL-G710 bridge (it took about 3 hours to get working, not 2 minutes, as they claim).
Now, I can always SEE the AE, and once I have a working connection, it never drops. However, while I can always SEE it, the ability to actually USE it is random. I select the AE it goes into a "connecting to...." mode and then times out.
Sometimes cycling iTunes allows it to connect. Sometimes turning off the Airport card on the laptop.
As a last note, I can't see the AE through Ethernet from my laptop, only when on the wireless. It's no show stopper, as I can run both connections, but it is kind of odd, since it all goes through the DI-624.
    Any ideas?

Switched to Airport Extreme as base station, problem solved.

  • How can I switch on my Apple TV speakers when it asks "multiple speakers" I cannot switch off my computer speakers and switch on my Apple TV speakers so cannot get airplay to work?

How can I get my Apple TV airplay to work from my PC.  On the airplay symbol it says Multiple Peakers please choose but I cannot switch off my computer speakers and switch on my Apple TV speakers so cannot get airplay to work from my PC.  Everything is OK when using my Ipod touch.

Don't use Multiple Speakers option and just choose the AppleTV
What are you trying to Airplay? If it's iTunes content it's simpler to 'pull' the stream from the Computers icson on AppleTV by selecting the libarry and media.
If you are attempting to Airplay the desktop you can't.

  • Can't Select Multiple speakers for AirTunes

I have had a problem for the past few days now where i can't select to use multiple speakers when using AirTunes.
This has never happened before, and was fine after the update to iTunes 7.
Is there something i need to change / select in my AirPort preferences to make multiple speakers enabled?

Do you have the latest Firmware of the AirPort Express V6.3?
There could be a problem with older versions of the firmware and the new iTunes 7. Then I would also update iTunes to the newest version 7.0.1.

  • Airtunes Multiple Speakers Don't All Appear With Lion

I have a MacBook with Lion and an older iMac with Snow Leopard. I share my iTunes library and have both computers connected to Apple TV and Airport Express. Airtunes is so that I can play speakers in two different rooms at different levels ( I'm married!) With Snow Leopard when I click the little box with the triangle in the bottom right corner of iTunes it shows three options...my computer, Apple TV, and my Airport Express network, and allows me to adjust volume on both my computer and airtunes (I rarely use Apple TV for music so don't need the separate adjustment for it.) With Lion, the triangle at the bottom corner shows all three selections and has a check mark to show that I am using multiple speakers...my computer and airtunes...but when I click on it it only gives me volume controls for my computer and my Apple TV...nothing for airport express. I need to adjust the sound levels differently in each room, but can't figure out how to make two discrete adjustments.

Same here! I too have a Mini Mac running 10.7, Apple TV and an old Airport Express. If I choose to play music through the Airport Express then choose multiple speakers, it will play through all 3, but I still have no discrete volume control from the mini mac for the Airport Express.
I find it strange as when I use the Remote app on my iPhone or iPad all three volume controls are present!!! What gives indeed??
