Using multiply effect on illustrator file with 2 color job?

Hi,
Encountering a tricky problem and not sure if its an InDesign fix or an Illustrator fix.
I am working on a 2 color job—pms color + black on a book cover. The cover needs to seperate into these 2 colors.
Also, I need to make a high res and lowres pdf that look like the cover to send out to marketing, sales etc.
WHAT's THE PROBLEM?...
Well, I am creating a collage with black ink vector graphics on top of the pms background. I created this art in illustrator. it is saved as an .eps file. The illos were done by someone who used a white fill to knock out black areas. There is also a wide 50% grey outline around the illustration.
I like the idea of the line of the illo being black and the fill being red so that it looks seethrough on the red background. But the 50% grey outline causes a problem...I'd like the 50% outline to blend with the red color, so instead of appearing like there is white in the ink it overprints.
The only way I could think of (and quickest way) was to apply the multiply filter in illustrator to the vector illo. This seemed to work great.
I brought the illo into InDesign where I created my cover layout.
Looks great, Prints great. Separations appear to be good, although it shows the yellow, cyan, and majenta layer they appear to be blank, so I think it will seperate nicely into 2 plates–PMS + black.
BUT, when I make a pdf, using "smallest file size" or using "high quality print", the pdf it makes does not show the illustrations in the collage. They are kind of beige and dulled out. The publisher needs pdfs too.
Does this at all indicate that this job will not print correctly using this multiply filter, or is it all well and good final product wise, but its just an issue making the pdf? I am slightly nervous I am going to send this off to the printer and they will have some issue.
I am a professional designer of 10 years with lots of print experience, but I have never used multiply in illustrator so I just want to make sure there is no rule against doing this I should know about. Does multiply at all mess with the color separations or is it fine? And how do I get my pdf to come out right? I'm hoping there's some dumb thing I'm forgetting, or a simple fix.
Thanks for any insight you may have!
L.

I did figure out after posting this that I was using one .ai file and one .eps file—the .ai was showing up fine in the pdf and the eps was showing up screwy.
odd thing though, when I just re-exported using pdf/x–1a settings, now both images appear muddy! but fine when I turn "overprint preview" on. I just don't want my publisher to have to tell everybody to turn overprint preview on...they shouldn't have to do that for editors etc, non design people.
maybe the new "smallest file size" will be fine though since this is a press preset...we'll see.

  • Bringing very complicated Illustrator files with spot color into ID?

I'm putting together the files for printing the first collection of my current comic book. Normally I'd just output 300dpi TIFFs, but I'm using a spot color overlay in this project.
Does anyone know the best way to get this into InDesign with the spot color intact?
These are SUPER COMPLICATED files, and experience has taught me that just saving a PDF to drop into InDesign results in a note from the printer that the file refused to print. I also can't do tricks involving moving it into Photoshop and selecting one particular color to put onto a new channel, as there's a lot of overprinting going on.

I think maybe you should check with other printers, as well.

My illustrator CS6 crashes when i try to open an AI file with RGB color mode. I worked on this file yesterday and changed it to RGB mode. Today i tried to open the file again but illustrator won't open it and crashes. It does work when i want to open a file with CMYK color mode.
Anyone know how to fix this ?

Have you tried trashing the prefs?

  • Example file, illustrator file with variables linked to xml

CS5 – Where can i find an example of an illustrator files with variables, linked to an xml file. We want to export it immediately to .pdf format when the file is linked. Is this possible? The illustrator help files are not so clear about this matter.

Follow the Help documentation's steps to create at least one of each of the four supported types of variable bound objects.
    Capture the DataSet.
    Edit the bound objects' content.
    Capture the DataSet.
Save Variable Library. That's your XML file.

  • Why can't I use lighting effect filter in CS6 with an 8bit RGB file?

I've read all over that the filter only works with an 8bit/RGB file, which my file is, so I don't understand what the problem is.  I am attempting to light a smart object (3d bevel and extruded text) that I created in illustrator, and thought that I might just need to rasterize the smart object before the filter would work, but even after I render it and or flatten the image, merge visible, I still don't have the option to use lighting effects!  Please help!

Thank you for your prompt reply.  After doing a bit of investigating I'm finding out this video card is pretty shite (work owned machine), and I didn't have the gp enabled in performance prefs.  I had been using such an old version of PS previously I wasn't aware there was a setting for  this, frankly.  Per some other threads I found, I updated to the latest graphics accellerator drivers for it as well, but unfortunately the enable gp option is still greyed out, so I'm guessing it just won't run this onboard gpu doesn't meet some minimum system requirement or something.  Thx again.

  • Sizing PSDS for After Effects / Preparing Illustrator files for After Effects

    3 questions
For the longest time I have been told when importing PSDs to
After effects, in order to keep circles circles (proper ratios) I had
to make a 720 540 PSD file and then crunch it down to 720 486. Then import the file to a D1 NTSC 720 486 after effects comp and everything works fine. And it does and always has
I have now been told otherwise. People claim they view in DV NTSC view
in Photoshop at 720 486 and then just import to a 720 486 DV1 After
Effects comp and everything is fine.
That view mode in Photoshop is for viewing purposes only though so this
confuses me. Sure you can sit there and stretch your picture to look
right in that mode but that doesn't make sense. Going 540 to 486 is
    quicker.
But one weird thing I noticed is if you save your PSD with the NTSC
view mode turned on it will automatically import to After Effects with
DV NTSC comp settings. Otherwise it will import into a Square Pixels
    comp.
So to simplify my questions are the following.
    1. Is there a way to avoid creating a 720 540 PSD and then crunching
down to 486? And somehow keep circles circles and photographs not
    stretched.
    2. Why does the DV viewing mode in Photoshop effect the importing into
After Effects if it's just for preview purposes?
That said I like that viewing mode in Photoshop because when I do my
720 540 to 720 486 crunch I can see that everything will look fine.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. I've been fine doing what I'm doing but for the last couple years I have been told there's a quicker way and haven't found anyone who knows.
And my final question #3 is
How do you import an illustrattor file into After Effectcs with
layers? I know how to bring sa photoshop file in with layers but everytime I import an illustrator file in , it comes in flat as one layer.
Thanks very much to those who can help.
    J.

    >Is there a way to avoid creating a 720 540 PSD and then crunching
    >down to 486? And somehow keep circles circles and photographs not
    >stretched.
Not really and then "crunching down" is very much a matter of point of view. The real question is: Can you accept the variations e.g. in antialiasing introduced by creating your work with non-square pixels in Photoshop. Apparently doing so will affect horizontal sampling more than vertical and as there is a difference in how AE and PS deal with these matters, the result would be different. It also extends to the matter of how practical it would be to work with such files if you need to move them to applications that don't provide PAR correction...
    >Why does the DV viewing mode in Photoshop effect the importing into
    >After Effects if it's just for preview purposes?
It doesn't. The people told you only half the facts. Photoshop's PAR correction is just for viewing purposes, that's true, but it does not mean that PS itself would be unable to deal with non-square pixels. Whenever you create a files based on such presets, PS will correctly embed that information for saving, hence programs like AE that are able to extract that information, will use it to correctly interpret items.
    >How do you import an illustrattor file into After Effectcs with
    >layers?
You can't. In the strict sense Illustrator has no layers, only objects and groups and since they can be infinitely combined in the funniest ways, it's a hell of a thing to read them right. Maybe in CS5 after all these years... (or even later).

  • Please help! I defragged my hard drive and now Illustrator CS6 is trying to open all of my complex Illustrator files with a "Text Import Options" box as if they are text files, and they are not opening!

Please help! Illustrator CS6 started trying to open all of my complex.ai files with a "Text Import Options" box as if they were text files, and they are not opening!  Help!

    Hi Monika,
I have spent the last two or three days trying to do what you suggested.  I uninstalled Adobe 6 from Windows.  Some files that CS6 placed on my system during installation remained, including fonts and .dll files.
I had to abandon the Cleaner Tool you suggested because in one screen it allowed me to specify removing CS6 only, but on the following screen it only gave on option to remove ALL Adobe programs.  I could not do that because I didn't have the serial number handy for CS3 in case I want to reinstall it at some point.
I tried to get technical help with the Cleaner Tool problem but no definitive help was available, so I reinstalled CS6 again without having the benefit of the Cleaner Tool.  I tried to get the serial number for CS3 so I could use the Cleaner Tool but spent 2 wasted hours in chat.  Even though I had a customer number, order number, order date, place of purchase, the email address used AND 16 digits of the serial number, in two hours the agent couldn't give me the serial number.  After two hours I had nothing but instructions to wait another 20 minutes for a case number.
Illustrator CS6 is still trying to open some backups as Text and otherNone of the problems have been fixed.  I have tried to open/use the .ai files in CS6 installed on another system and am getting the same result, so I don't think the software was damaged by the cleaner.  The hard drive cleaner is well-known and I've run it many times without any problem to previous versions of Illustrator or any other programs.
When I ordered, the sale rep promised good technical support and gave me an 800 number, but after I paid the $2000, I learned that the 800 number she gave me doesn't support CS6 and hangs up on me.  Adobe doesn't call it a current product even though they just sold it to me about 3 weeks ago.
Would appreciate any help you experts can offer.  If I can't solve this, the last backup I can use was from June and I will have lost HUNDREDS of hours of work and assets that I cannot replace.
Exhausted and still desperately in need of help...

  • Placing an illustrator file with "white" objects add process black to PDF

Ran into this problem today with InDesign CS5:
I am trying to create a document with only one (spot) color, pantone 293 in this case.
Placed some illustrator files in this document, all of them also only contain pantone 293. However, they also contain some "white" objects. Now my problem appears to be that "white" in illustrator is defined as "0% gray" by default. So when I export my document as PDF from inDesign, i get a PDF with both spot color pantone 293 and black. Strange thing is, I tried making the "white" objects 0% pantone 293 instead of 0% gray, but the PDF still exports with black process color.
Just plain telling my printing company to ignore the black process color altogether would be foolish i guess, since there are objects underneath the illustrator files which need to be knocked out by the "white".
    Any ideas?

If the problem isn't a profile conflict as Peter suggests, you might try setting up a preflight profile for 1 spot color that will catch uses of CMYK black. When you export a PDF from ID the CMYK channels always exist in the exported PDF, so you may need a preflight check to make sure CMYK plates are empty.
This allows only 1 spot color, defined as Lab. Any use of black would throw an error:
Here the white box is defined as Paper 0|0|0|0 CMYK and I get an error
Defining the box as 0% Orange is OK

  • Can you open an existing illustrator file with the application default settings?

I need to open a customers illustrator files that he sends me with the default application settings, not the setting he saved with his file.

    CS6 (Mac) but soon CC.
What is happening is they are saving the files with among other things, print scaling set to something other than 100%. If one of our operators does not catch it, the plate files are ripped at a smaller size than what they should be.
This customer does thier own production work and sends us "plate ready" files but sometimes forgets to change this setting back to 100% (he changes the scaling to something that will fit on a letter size page so he can check his separations).
I seem to recall (from years ago), there was a way to open a file using the applications default settings, not the settings saved within the file itself.

  • Illustrator files with Charts in them become corrupt

I keep running into an issue where I create a file in Illustrator (some of them are detailed infographics), and if they contain a chart, such as a bar or pie chart, they become corrupt and Illustrator gives me an error "Can't open the illustration. The illustration contains an illegal or misplaced operator."
Then it opens the file, but much of it (anything below the chart) is missing. I've been able to restore *some* of my work by exporting a PDF version of the file to an EPS, but I lose a lot of my formatting. This is extremely frustrating, as I am losing hours of work each time it happens. I spoke with a customer service agent about the issue months ago, and even sent her a corrupt file, but never heard anything back.

The last time I made one of these infographics that ended up being corrupt, I saved as both an .ai and .eps. Both ended up being corrupt when I re-opened them. The best fix I've been able to find is to turn all charts into regular graphics by ungrouping them, and saving that. But it's not a great fix since sometimes, I need to go in and adjust the data later on, which you can't do if it's ungrouped.
I work from my hard drive, not a server
I use a legal version of helvetica
    No plugins
I (luckily) do usually create PDFs but if there was a corrupt graphic in them, they won't open in Illustrator. I have to open in Adobe and export as an .eps, and when I open that, the text is often outlined or each line of text is a separate object.
When you say "link to another illustrator file," do you mean using the Place command? This might be possible but as you said, not very practical since with an infographic, I'll want to have multiple charts and will need to edit and adjust them on the fly, not open a different file each time then go back and forth to see if it looks right.
    I don't have CS6
Basically I am really hoping Adobe comes up with a fix for this bug. I've been creating charts for a long time, but have never had this issue where the file becomes corrupt until now. And when you pay monthly for upgraded software, you expect better, not worse, performance :-/

  • Anomalies in CS5 when using edit original on Illustrator files from within InDesign

Using the Edit Original function to open up a placed Illustrator file from an InDesign layout, we are seeing some strange things. If the image is placed on page at 100%, after editing via Edit Original it comes back in at a different size. Sometimes it is a silly size (99.999999999% or 100.000000002%), other times 2 or 3% smaller. Is anyone else seeing this - and, if so, is there a fix?

We are also experiencing this with .psd .ai .eps .jpg files etc. etc. etc.
    Example:
An image is placed in a box in InDesign, then resized and positioned. In a later stage the image needs editing, so the image is selected and we click on Edit Original. The image opens in either PS or ILL, we alter it (not sizewise, just color). Then we save it and the link in InDesign updates.
    BUT
The position and the scale of the image most often CHANGES.
CS5 is soo full of bugs, it is not even funny anymore. We are slowly moving our studio back to CS3.

  • Illustrator files with PDF icons

Silly little problem. Running 10.4.11 on a G5 iMac, Illustrator CS2. Often when I save or resave an Illustrator file, the file's icon is PDF rather than Illustrator. I then have to Get Info on another Illustrator file, copy the icon, Get Info on the other file and paste the icon to restore it.
Any reason why this annoyance is happening and how to avoid it?
    Thanks.

Just use Rainer's Nudge contextual menu to force the Finder to update the icon: http://www.brockerhoff.net/nudge/index.html.
Note that the issue you're seeing is merely cosmetic: even though the document has a PDF icon, it's still set to open in Illustrator.
The reason this occurs is that when Illustrator saves your file, it doesn't overwrite your original immediately, since if you were to lose power and your computer were to shut down, a half-written file would surely be corrupt, resulting in complete data loss. Instead, Illustrator writes the data out to a new file that happens to be named "Acro########.tmp", and by default, a file like that has a PDF icon and will be opened in Acrobat. After Illustrator has written out that file, it then deletes your original .ai file and renames the temp file to be just like your original .ai file. Unfortunately, the Finder still wants to hang on to the old icon which it has likely cached in its memory. Using Nudge will force it to re-examine the file and show the correct icon.
    Hope this helps....

  • Packaging Illustrator files with AppleScript

Is there not an AppleScript command for Illustrator to package a file?  I use this extensively in InDesign and was trying to make a workflow for Illustrator files.

The Package command is only usable in the Creative Cloud versions of AI. Don't know if it has been added to the Apple Script commands.

Run the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool, reinstall. Also check your fonts. You probably have a "bad" font i nthere somewhere that is corrupting all font operations.
